Favor technologies that support the tactic you intend to use when those technologies become available. 1. Define the next outcome, not a favorite technology

2. Find the immediate gate
Look for the missing station, material, combat preparation, or access requirement. If several activities are available, choose the gate that unlocks the most important near-term objective. This prevents spending research on a branch simply because its icon looks attractive.
3. Trace prerequisites backward
The planner’s central lesson is that technologies depend on earlier technologies. Trace the chain to the first unlock you can afford, then check every intermediate requirement in your current game. A route that appears short on a planner may be longer after a patch changes a prerequisite.

4. Check your resource and time position
Research cost is only one constraint. Ask whether you can produce the required materials, whether the needed workstations are operating, and whether a scheduled town battle leaves enough time to prepare. Combat players should account for the weekly town-battle timing; production players should account for the time needed to make an automation chain functional.
5. Reassess after each meaningful unlock
Do not queue a complete branch without checking the result of the first unlock. A new station may make a different technology the best next choice, or a quest may reveal a new gate. Replanning after each major capability is safer than following a static list copied from an earlier patch.
6. Keep talents in a separate decision lane

The developer’s schedule matters when deciding what to unlock first. Town battles happen on one particular day each week, whereas the sewers are available for combat six days out of six. A combat route can therefore use the sewers as a practice and resource cycle while reserving the final preparation window for the town battle.

Following a universal tier list

The third-party planner reports costs and prerequisites, but the game is patchable. Confirm the exact entry in your current Technology Tree before committing scarce materials.
Preparing for the wrong combat style
Archer squads, spiked barricades, and combat potions solve different tactical problems. Choose one primary approach for the next encounter, then research support for that approach. Do not spread resources across every tactic unless your current objectives require flexibility.
Neglecting production while pursuing combat
Combat preparation still depends on materials and supplies. If a potion, barricade, or squad-support item is repeatedly unavailable, a production or infrastructure unlock may be the most useful combat technology priority even though it does not look like a weapon upgrade.

You are rebuilding the town and short on stone
Start with the technology that supplies stone work or the station needed to process it, provided its prerequisites are affordable. Once the construction gate is open, compare the next building requirement with the automation option that would reduce repeated hauling or processing. The planner’s wood and stone work examples support this direction, but they do not establish the exact order for your save.
You have a town battle approaching
Choose your tactic first. If you want ranged support, investigate the archer-squad route; if you want a fixed defensive line, investigate spiked barricades; if consumables fit your play, investigate combat potions and their production chain. Verify the current prerequisites, then spend the remaining preparation time on the materials your tactic consumes.

Do not switch to a supposedly superior branch. Locate the station in the Technology Tree, trace its prerequisites, and research the earliest reachable requirement. After the quest advances, reassess whether the next unlock should remain graveyard-focused or address a production bottleneck exposed by the task.

You can confidently build a goal-based priority system around the game’s stated activities: graveyard management, production automation, town rebuilding, and undead combat.
