First determine whether you are seeing temporary shader compilation or a sustained frame-rate drop. If performance is consistently low after the game has settled, lower render resolution or resolution scale first, then test expensive features such as ray tracing, advanced lighting, shadows, and reflections—one setting at a time. If the problem is a hitch the first time you enter an area or see an effect, wait for compilation and streaming to finish before degrading image quality.
There is no universal best order for every game, engine, GPU, or CPU. The sequence below gives you a controlled way to identify the setting that actually matters in your title.

1. Identify the symptom before changing image quality
Transient hitches after an update
A game can stutter briefly when it encounters a shader, pipeline state, asset, or streaming event for the first time. This often appears as a short pause when you enter a new area, meet an enemy using a new effect, or turn the camera toward an unfamiliar scene. Average frame rate may look acceptable between those pauses.
Unreal Engine engineers explain that graphics options can enable different rendering features and therefore require different shaders or pipeline states. A state that has not been compiled yet can hitch when it is first needed. Their article also notes that the graphics driver stores compiled pipeline state objects (PSOs) on disk and clears that cache after a driver installation. As they put it, “The cache is cleared when a new driver is installed, so it’s normal to see longer loading screens the first time a game runs after a driver update.” See Epic’s explanation of Unreal Engine’s PSO precaching work (published February 4, 2025).

Sustained low frame rate
A sustained problem is different: after several minutes in the same type of scene, the frame rate remains below your target, GPU usage is high, and lowering a setting produces a repeatable improvement. That is the case in which reducing rendering workload is a sensible first diagnostic experiment.
Do not use a single short hitch as proof that the update permanently reduced performance. Conversely, do not assume that a low average frame rate will fix itself through compilation. Treat the two symptoms as separate investigations.
2. Allow first-use compilation to finish
After an engine, game, or graphics-driver update, run the game long enough to reach a settled state before comparing numbers. AMD’s support guidance for titles affected by its background shader-compilation feature recommends allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing performance measurements and excluding the first benchmark run of each new session. That is vendor-specific guidance, not a timer that applies to every game. The scope and current wording are in AMD’s background shader compilation support article, accessed October 13, 2026.

Use the game’s normal menus and play through representative areas during this settling period. If the game compiles shaders in a menu, displays a compilation progress message, or continues stuttering only when new effects appear, let that work complete. Restarting repeatedly can make every test include another “first run” and hide the difference between a temporary hitch and a persistent regression.
What the published examples do—and do not—mean
Epic gives Fortnite Battle Royale as an illustration of a large shader-state space: the game compiles about 30,000 PSOs for a match and uses about 10,000 of them. Epic also reports that Fortnite can take around 20–30 seconds longer to load into a Battle Royale match when the driver cache is empty. Those figures describe that title and scenario; they are not estimates for your game or a general post-update delay.
3. Establish a repeatable baseline
Before changing options, make the comparison useful. Record the current resolution, resolution scale, frame-rate cap, graphics preset, and whether features such as ray tracing are enabled. Then use the same scene and route for every test.

- Choose a repeatable scene. Use a save point, benchmark route, or a short path that contains the problem. Avoid comparing a quiet menu with a busy combat sequence.
- Keep display conditions fixed. Do not change monitor resolution, window mode, upscaling mode, or frame-rate cap between tests unless that is the setting under examination.
- Measure the same way. Use one overlay, built-in benchmark, or frame-time log consistently. Capture average performance only after the initial compilation period; note severe stutters separately.
- Change one option. Apply one setting change, repeat the same route, and record the result. If you alter several options together, you cannot tell which one helped.
- Restore and verify. If a change has no measurable effect, return it to the previous value before testing the next candidate. This prevents cumulative image-quality loss without evidence of a benefit.
4. Settings to test first for sustained low frame rate
The following order is a practical diagnostic sequence, not a universal ranking. A game’s renderer, scene, CPU, GPU, and resolution determine which option costs the most.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Setting to test | Image and workload effect | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Render resolution or resolution scale | Usually reduces the number of pixels the renderer must produce, so image clarity falls as the scale falls. | A quick, reversible test for a GPU-limited scene. If frame rate barely changes, the bottleneck may not be pixel rendering. |
| Ray tracing | Disabling or lowering it removes or reduces a feature that can add substantial lighting, reflection, or shadow work. | Because feature toggles can select different shaders or PSOs, the first run after changing it may hitch while new states compile. |
| Advanced lighting or global illumination | Lower values reduce the complexity of lighting calculations; the scene may lose lighting detail or accuracy. | Compare the same view and wait for any new shader work before judging the result. |
| Shadows | Lower settings can reduce shadow-map or shadow-rendering work, with softer, lower-resolution, or less distant shadows. | Outdoor scenes and scenes with many light sources may respond differently. |
| Reflections | Lower settings reduce reflection quality or update frequency and can lessen rendering work in reflective scenes. | Test near the surfaces that showed the problem; a view without reflections may conceal the cost. |
Why start with resolution or scale?
Resolution scale is a clean first experiment because it changes output workload without simultaneously changing every other visual feature. Lower it one step, repeat the same scene, and check whether frame time improves. If it does, you have evidence that the tested scene is limited by rendering throughput. If it does not, restore the original value and continue; do not keep lowering resolution simply because it is the first option in the menu.
When to move to feature settings
If resolution scaling helps only slightly, test ray tracing, then the game’s highest-cost lighting, shadow, or reflection options individually. A feature may be expensive only in certain scenes, so use a route that actually contains the relevant effect. Keep a note of both performance and visual change: a small gain that makes the game look dramatically worse may be a poor trade, while a modest reduction in reflections could be acceptable.

5. Account for shader and pipeline changes after each adjustment
Changing a graphics option can do more than alter a numeric quality level. It may enable a different rendering path and introduce shader or PSO states that were not used in the previous configuration. That is why a setting change can produce a short hitch even when it eventually improves steady-state performance.
After each change, repeat the route once to expose first-use work, then repeat it again for the settled comparison. Keep the initial pass separate from the measurement pass. If a hitch occurs only on the first encounter and disappears on the second, it is evidence of compilation or streaming rather than proof that the new setting is slower.
6. When lowering graphics settings will not solve the problem
Not every stall is caused by visual quality. Unreal Engine’s performance guidance discusses CPU and memory considerations, and Unity’s documentation on reducing stalls lists causes such as synchronous loading, excessive spawning or streaming, and scene captures triggered by movement. See Epic’s Unreal Engine CPU and memory considerations and Unity 6.7 Beta’s guidance on fixing hitches or stalls.
Best Value
Use these clues to decide whether to stop changing image quality:
- GPU usage is low while the frame rate is low: the game may be waiting on CPU work, asset loading, simulation, or synchronization rather than rendering pixels.
- Only movement into a new area causes a pause: streaming or first-use compilation is a stronger suspect than a permanently excessive graphics setting.
- Lowering resolution produces no repeatable gain: the tested scene may be CPU-bound, blocked by loading, or limited by another subsystem.
- Spawning many objects causes the stall: reducing lighting or reflections may leave the triggering work unchanged.
- A scene capture or camera turn triggers the hitch: the event may be a capture or pipeline transition rather than ordinary frame rendering.
In these cases, keep the original image quality while investigating patches, shader-cache behavior, streaming settings, background processes, or CPU and memory limits documented for the specific game. A lower preset is not proof that the engine update is defective, and it does not by itself show that new hardware is required.
7. A decision path you can reuse
- Does the game hitch only on first encounters after the update? Play long enough for compilation and streaming to settle, then retest. Follow the vendor guidance for affected titles; AMD’s published recommendation is approximately 15 minutes before measuring, with the first run of a new session excluded.
- Is the frame rate still consistently low? Capture a baseline in a repeatable scene and test render resolution or scale by one step.
- Did resolution help? Keep the smallest visual reduction that meets your target, or restore it and test the expensive feature most visible in the problem scene.
- Did resolution not help? Test ray tracing, advanced lighting, shadows, and reflections one at a time. Record both frame-time change and image-quality cost.
- Did none of those changes help? Treat the issue as potentially CPU-, memory-, loading-, streaming-, spawning-, or scene-capture-related instead of continuing to lower quality.
- Did a change introduce new first-use hitches? Run the same route again after the new states have had time to compile, then compare settled performance.
8. What a trustworthy comparison looks like
A useful conclusion names the exact game, engine, hardware, display resolution, scene, and measurement method. It distinguishes first-run behavior from later runs and says which single option changed. Avoid claiming that an engine update causes a fixed percentage loss: no broad, independently comparable statistic establishes an average frame-rate reduction across games, and no setting order works identically across engines.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The practical goal is not the lowest possible setting. It is the smallest targeted change that removes a sustained rendering bottleneck while preserving the image quality you value, after temporary compilation and streaming work have been accounted for.
