Which Graphics Settings Affect Motion Blur and Image Clarity?

Motion Blur is the setting that deliberately adds streaks when the camera or objects move. If the picture is still soft, smeared or ghosted with Motion Blur disabled, the usual causes are temporal anti-aliasing or upscaling, a low render-resolution scale, dynamic resolution, or an aggressive reconstruction mode. Sharpening can make edges look crisper, but it cannot restore detail that was never rendered.

Because every game implements these controls differently, compare them in the same moving scene, at the same display resolution, and change one option at a time. The sequence below identifies which setting is responsible without sacrificing more image quality or performance than necessary.

What each graphics setting changes

The controls below affect different stages of the rendering pipeline. A game may group them under Graphics, Display, Advanced or Post-processing, and some options may be unavailable in a particular engine or platform.

Setting Primary effect Symptoms when it is the problem First adjustment to try
Motion Blur Adds intentional blur to camera or object movement. Directional streaks appear whenever you turn, sprint or watch a moving object. Set it to Off or reduce its amount.
Anti-aliasing method Smooths jagged edges with spatial or temporal samples. Temporal modes can soften moving detail or leave ghost trails; spatial modes can show jagged or shimmering edges. Compare the available TAA, FXAA, MSAA or equivalent modes in motion.
Upscaling method Reconstructs the output image from a lower-resolution render, often using prior frames. Fine textures lose definition, moving edges trail, or thin objects shimmer. Try another supported upscaler at the same output resolution and quality preset.
Render scale or resolution scale Sets the internal resolution before the image is enlarged for display. Everything looks softer, especially distant geometry and small text, while frame rate improves. Raise the scale if the GPU has headroom.
Dynamic resolution Automatically changes internal resolution to maintain a performance target. Clarity changes during demanding scenes or camera movement. Disable it for a fixed-resolution test, or raise its minimum scale.
Sharpening Raises local edge contrast to increase perceived crispness. Edges look slightly clearer, but halos, ringing or noisy textures appear at high values. Use a modest value after choosing the resolution and reconstruction mode.

These settings are not interchangeable. Turning off Motion Blur removes an intentional post-process effect; it does not disable the temporal history used by an anti-aliasing or upscaling algorithm.

Motion Blur: the direct cause of movement streaks

Motion Blur is normally applied after the scene has been rendered. Depending on the game, it can blur the whole camera movement, individual objects, or both. Some menus expose separate camera and per-object amounts, while others provide only one slider.

How to test it

  1. Stand in a detailed area with thin geometry, signs or foliage.
  2. Record or observe a slow horizontal camera turn.
  3. Switch Motion Blur from its current value to Off without changing any other setting.
  4. Repeat the same turn at the same speed.

If the streaks disappear, Motion Blur was responsible. If the image remains soft or leaves a duplicate-looking trail, continue with temporal anti-aliasing, upscaling and resolution checks. A game can retain temporal softness even when its Motion Blur control is off.

Temporal anti-aliasing and why it can look blurry

Temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) combines samples from the current frame with information stored from previous frames. This stabilizes edges that would otherwise shimmer, but the history must be reprojected when the camera or objects move. Reprojection errors, disocclusion and rapidly changing surfaces can appear as softness or ghosting.

Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation distinguishes the Motion Blur pass from temporal history effects. Its cinematic-rendering guidance also notes that TemporalAA can ghost around a moving object against a noisy background. The exact result depends on the game’s implementation, history length, motion-vector quality and sharpening stage.

How other anti-aliasing modes differ

  • FXAA: A fast, spatial post-process. Epic describes it as less precise for fine detail than TAA or MSAA in its cinematic-rendering context. It avoids temporal history, but can soften high-contrast edges.
  • MSAA: Samples geometry edges and can preserve a crisp appearance on those edges. In Unreal’s documented rendering chain, it does not solve aliasing from materials, textures or transparent surfaces, so foliage and alpha-tested details may still shimmer.
  • TAA and temporal variants: Usually provide stable edges at a lower cost than rendering every pixel at full resolution, but may blur or ghost during motion.

Availability and quality vary by engine and game. Treat the names as clues, not guarantees; inspect moving detail rather than choosing a mode from its label.

Upscaling and temporal reconstruction

Upscalers render the scene internally below the monitor’s output resolution and reconstruct a higher-resolution image. Common choices include temporal methods such as TAAU, TSR, DLSS, FSR and XeSS, when a game supports them. They use different algorithms, inputs and quality presets, so two modes set to “Quality” are not necessarily equivalent.

Epic’s Temporal Super Resolution documentation explains that the render chain can place motion blur after reconstruction. The upscaler may also use a history buffer, meaning moving pixels can become soft or leave trails even with Motion Blur disabled. Lowering the internal resolution gives the algorithm less source information; no sharpening pass can recreate texture detail that was not rendered.

Compare upscalers fairly

  1. Set the monitor or window output to the same resolution for every test.
  2. Choose the same nominal quality class where possible, then note the internal-resolution percentage if the game reports it.
  3. Use a scene containing foliage, wires, text, patterned surfaces and a moving character.
  4. Look at the character’s outline, thin geometry and fine textures while panning, not only at a paused screenshot.
  5. Check for ghost trails behind moving objects, shimmer on repeated patterns and loss of distant detail.

Keep the mode that gives the best balance for your display and frame-rate target. Official engine documentation does not establish one universally best upscaler for every game.

Resolution scale and dynamic resolution

Resolution scale determines how many pixels the game renders before presenting the final image. For example, a scale below 100 percent reduces GPU work and then enlarges the result. Raising it generally improves fine detail and reduces the burden on the upscaler, but increases rendering cost.

Dynamic resolution changes that scale during play to meet a frame-time or frame-rate target. Unity 6 describes dynamic resolution as a pipeline feature whose available reconstruction techniques can include TAAU, STP, FSR and DLSS. The same percentage therefore may produce different results in different pipelines.

Diagnose changing clarity

  • If clarity drops only during explosions, crowded scenes or large outdoor views, dynamic resolution may be reducing the internal scale.
  • Disable dynamic resolution temporarily and set a fixed scale to establish a baseline.
  • If performance falls below your target at that fixed scale, re-enable dynamic resolution and raise its minimum scale rather than its maximum alone.
  • When comparing anti-aliasing or upscalers, keep the scale fixed; otherwise you are changing two variables at once.

Sharpening: useful finishing control, not a detail generator

Sharpening increases contrast across edges. It can counter the slightly soft appearance of a reconstruction pass, but excessive values produce bright or dark halos, ringing around text and an artificially grainy image.

Epic notes that sharpening in temporal reconstruction cannot correct every detail loss caused by reprojection. NVIDIA’s driver documentation presents Image Scaling and sharpening as separate controls and recommends application-controlled anti-aliasing for games that expose their own anti-aliasing settings. Driver features may also have compatibility limits; the documented GPU-scaling feature, for example, does not apply in every windowed or borderless-windowed configuration.

Apply sharpening safely

  1. Choose the anti-aliasing or upscaling method first.
  2. Set the render scale and dynamic-resolution behavior.
  3. Increase in-game sharpening in small increments, checking thin lines and text for halos.
  4. If the game has no sharpening control, test a driver-level option only after confirming that it supports the game’s display mode.
  5. Return to the previous value if textures look noisy or edge contrast becomes distracting.

A repeatable test that isolates the culprit

Use a saved position or repeatable benchmark scene with camera movement and fine detail. Keep the output resolution, field of view, graphics preset, refresh rate and frame-rate limit unchanged throughout the test.

  1. Establish a baseline. Note the current Motion Blur, anti-aliasing, upscaler, render scale, dynamic-resolution and sharpening values. Record frame rate or frame time if the game displays it.
  2. Test Motion Blur. Toggle only Motion Blur. If streaks remain, do not keep lowering unrelated settings; proceed to temporal controls.
  3. Test temporal methods. Compare the available anti-aliasing or upscaling modes at the same output resolution and fixed render scale. Watch moving edges and textures for ghosting, shimmer and softness.
  4. Test internal resolution. Raise the render scale or disable dynamic resolution for one run. If detail returns, the previous internal resolution was the limiting factor.
  5. Set sharpening last. Add only enough sharpening to restore perceived edge definition without halos or noise.
  6. Measure the trade-off. Choose the setting that meets your motion-clarity and performance target, rather than the one that looks best in a paused frame.

Epic’s anti-aliasing guidance recommends varied assets and movement because static comparison captures cannot show temporal behavior. A moving test is essential when the complaint is blur during play.

How to choose between image-quality trade-offs

Priority Usually favor Trade-off to expect
Least intentional blur Motion Blur Off; then a non-temporal anti-aliasing option if acceptable. More jagged or shimmering edges may appear.
Stable edges in motion A well-tuned temporal method at a sufficiently high internal resolution. Possible ghosting or softness on fast-moving objects.
Maximum fine detail Higher render scale or native resolution with restrained sharpening. Higher GPU load and potentially lower frame rate.
Consistent performance Dynamic resolution with a sensible minimum scale. Visible clarity changes when GPU demand rises.
More frames per second Lower render scale or an efficient upscaler. Less source detail for reconstruction and a softer image.

Common problems and targeted fixes

“Motion Blur is off, but moving objects still trail.”

Check TAA or the temporal upscaler first. Compare another mode at the same internal resolution, then inspect whether the game offers a history, ghosting or anti-aliasing-quality option. If every temporal mode trails, raise the render scale and verify that motion vectors are not affected by a separate quality setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The image is sharp when paused but soft while turning.”

This pattern points to temporal reconstruction or dynamic resolution rather than a static sharpening problem. Disable dynamic resolution for a test and compare a spatial anti-aliasing mode. If clarity changes with camera speed, temporal history is likely involved.

“Raising sharpening made the picture worse.”

Reduce it until halos and ringing disappear. Sharpening cannot replace missing pixels; use a higher internal scale or a different upscaler when the source image is too low-resolution.

“Edges are jagged after switching away from TAA.”

That is the spatial-versus-temporal trade-off. Try a higher render scale, a different spatial mode, or a less aggressive temporal preset. MSAA may improve geometry edges but will not necessarily remove aliasing from textures, foliage or transparency.

“The driver setting does nothing.”

Prefer the game’s own anti-aliasing and scaling controls when available. Driver-level controls can be bypassed by an application-controlled pipeline, and documented GPU-scaling features may not work in every windowed or borderless mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check before blaming the display

Confirm that the game is outputting the monitor’s intended resolution and that no separate resolution scale, dynamic-resolution limit or low-quality preset is active. Compare the same scene in exclusive full-screen, borderless and windowed modes only after the in-game pipeline is understood; changing modes can alter which driver features apply. Keep display-side sharpening or image-processing features constant during testing so they do not mask the game’s actual output.

The practical order is therefore straightforward: remove intentional Motion Blur, identify temporal ghosting or softness, stabilize the internal resolution, choose the anti-aliasing or upscaler that fits the scene, and apply restrained sharpening last. This approach separates causes that are often incorrectly treated as one “blur” setting.
