The settings most likely to help are the maintenance controls rather than a single “stability” switch: update the affected app, force stop it, restart the Google TV Streamer, and install any system update. If several apps are slow, check storage and remove temporary cache data or unused apps. Investigate Wi‑Fi only when symptoms point to buffering or a connection problem. Clear app data only after these steps, and reserve a factory reset for persistent device-wide failures because it erases the Streamer’s data.
Google presents these actions as troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed cures. The right sequence depends on whether one app crashes, the whole device lags, storage is nearly full, or playback behaves like a network problem.

Choose the troubleshooting path by symptom
Start with the narrowest intervention that matches what you see. A crash confined to one app calls for app-level maintenance; a frozen home screen needs device-level steps; buffering requires a network check. This avoids deleting data or changing network settings when they are unrelated to the failure.
| What you notice | Start with | Disruption |
|---|---|---|
| One app closes, crashes or will not open | Update that app, then Settings > Apps > [app] > Force stop | Low; the app’s local session ends |
| Several apps or menus are slow or frozen | Restart, close recently opened apps, update apps, then check for a system update | Low; updates may temporarily make the device slower |
| Storage warning or very little free space | Clear cached data or uninstall apps you no longer use | Low; cache is temporary data |
| Buffering, sign-in timeouts or connection errors | Check Settings > Network and Internet, Wi‑Fi band and router conditions | Low to moderate; network changes affect all devices |
| Failure continues across the device | Consider clearing app data, then a factory reset as a last resort | High; a factory reset erases device data |
Fix a crash in one app
1. Update the app from Google Play
Open the Play Store on the Google TV Streamer, find the affected app and install its available update. You can also choose the option to update all apps. App updates can contain compatibility and crash fixes, so this is the least disruptive first test.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
After the update finishes, launch the app again. Do not judge overall responsiveness while a large batch of app updates is still running; Google notes that the device may feel slower during updates.
2. Force stop the affected app
From the Google TV home screen, open Settings > Apps, select the failing app, choose Force stop, and confirm. Reopen the app from the home screen. Force stopping terminates the current process; it does not remove the app, its account, or its saved data.
If the app does not appear in the first list, use See all apps and select it there. Force stopping is useful when an app remains stuck in memory after a crash or an incomplete loading attempt.

If the app still fails, restart the Streamer. A restart clears transient processes and gives pending updates a clean boot. Then open Settings > System > About > System update and install an available update. Reopen the app only after the update and restart have completed.
4. Escalate an app-only failure
When one app continues to crash after its update, a force stop, a restart and a system update, Google directs users to contact that app’s developer. This pattern points to an app-specific defect or account issue rather than a universal Google TV setting. Include the app version, Streamer software version and the action that triggers the crash when you report it.

Reduce general lag and freezing
Restart before changing data
For a sluggish home screen, delayed remote input or several apps freezing, restart the device first. This is safer than clearing data and often resolves a temporary process or update contention.
Close recently opened apps
Force stop apps you opened recently, especially those that stream or perform heavy background work. Use Settings > Apps, select an app and choose Force stop. Work through the recently used apps rather than stopping system components whose purpose you do not recognize.
Finish app and system updates
Update apps in the Play Store, then check Settings > System > About > System update. Test performance after updates finish and the device has restarted. Google specifically warns that update activity can make a device seem slower while it is in progress, so testing midway can give a misleading result.
Consider Quick Start carefully
Google’s slow-device guidance includes Quick Start as an optional setting. The exact location and behavior can vary by device, so follow the label shown on your Streamer rather than assuming a path from another Google TV model. Treat it as an experiment for startup or responsiveness issues, not as a guaranteed crash fix. If enabling it changes nothing, return to the standard restart, update and storage checks.
Free space and cached data
Check internal storage
Low free space can leave less room for temporary files and updates. On the Google TV Streamer, open Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage to review usage. Remove apps you do not use through Settings > Apps > See all apps, select an app and choose the uninstall option.

Clear cached data for all apps
From Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage > Cached data, choose the control to clear cached data. Google’s Streaming Help article, “Free up storage on Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer,” states: “Note: Clearing your app cache only removes temporary data.” That means cached thumbnails, downloaded working files and similar temporary material may be rebuilt the next time an app runs; your account and app installation remain in place.

App crashes are not automatically network faults. Use network troubleshooting when video repeatedly buffers, pages time out, sign-in requests fail, or several online apps lose connection at once.
Verify the connection and band
Open Settings > Network and Internet, confirm that the intended Wi‑Fi network is connected and note the band in use. If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, Google suggests trying 5 GHz where available; range and wall placement can make one band more reliable than the other in a particular room.
Improve the router path
Reboot the router and, if practical, move it to reduce obstruction or distance from the Streamer. A wired Ethernet connection is another option when Wi‑Fi remains unstable. These changes address packet loss and throughput; they do not repair an app that crashes offline or fails immediately after launch.

Retest after network changes
After changing the network, reopen the affected app and test the same action that previously failed. If playback improves but the app still crashes in menus, return to the app-specific sequence instead of repeatedly changing router settings.
More disruptive steps: clear app data, then reset only as a last resort
Understand what clearing app data does
Clearing an app’s data is later in Google’s device-troubleshooting sequence because it removes that app’s locally stored settings and sign-in state. You may need to log in again, reselect preferences and redownload offline content. Use it when an individual app remains broken after updates, force stop, restart and cache cleanup, and make sure you know the account credentials before confirming.
Factory reset consequences
A factory reset returns the Google TV Streamer to its initial setup state and erases data on the device. It removes installed apps, accounts, settings and local preferences, so you will have to complete setup and reinstall services. Google recommends trying the less disruptive measures first. Consider a reset only when failures affect the device broadly and persist through restarts, updates, storage cleanup and app-data troubleshooting.
Record your setup before resetting
Before a reset, note Wi‑Fi credentials, app logins, parental-control settings and any custom preferences you will need to restore. If only one app is affected, a reset is disproportionate; use the developer-support route instead.

A practical maintenance routine
- When an app crashes, update it in the Play Store.
- Force stop only that app from Settings > Apps, then reopen it.
- Restart the Streamer if the problem remains.
- Install a system update from Settings > System > About > System update.
- If several apps lag, force stop recently opened apps and wait for all updates to finish before testing.
- Review Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage; clear cached data or uninstall unused apps when space is low.
- Use Settings > Network and Internet only when buffering or connection errors indicate a network cause.
- Clear app data only after the earlier steps, and reserve factory reset for persistent device-wide failure.
This sequence follows Google’s published troubleshooting guidance while limiting data loss and unnecessary changes. None of these settings comes with a published success rate or a guarantee of improved stability; their value depends on the underlying cause.
