Compare equivalent periods, then examine clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and average position by query and page. Use Page Indexing and URL Inspection to test whether crawling or indexing explains the change. If the loss is broad or pages have disappeared, check Manual Actions and Security Issues. These reports can show what changed and where; they cannot, by themselves, prove why it changed.
Which reports to use, and what each one can answer
The reports answer different parts of the same investigation. Begin with the report that measures search visibility, then move from site-level patterns to individual URLs and policy signals.

Do not call every traffic decline a ranking decline. A fall in clicks can result from fewer impressions, a lower CTR, a different query mix, or a position change. Treat the reports as evidence that narrows the possibilities, not as an automatic explanation.

Use the property that actually contains the affected URLs
Check that the Search Console property matches the site’s real protocol and hostname. A property for https does not automatically represent an http version, and a URL-prefix property for one hostname does not include another hostname. A mismatch can make traffic appear to have vanished even when it is being recorded in a different property.

Also verify that you are looking at the intended site, subdirectory, or domain property before interpreting any chart. If a migration, hostname change, or protocol change occurred, inspect the old and new properties as separate parts of the timeline.
Compare periods that are genuinely comparable
In Performance, select a before-and-after range with the same number of days. Compare the same weekdays where practical, and use weekly or monthly trends when daily data is noisy. Account for seasonal demand, holidays, news cycles, and normal weekly behavior. A week-over-week comparison can be misleading for a site whose audience behaves differently on weekends; a year-over-year view may be more meaningful for a seasonal business.
Allow for reporting and crawling delays. A recent edit, site move, or temporary crawl delay may not be reflected immediately. Google’s traffic-drop guidance also identifies removals and migrations as possible explanations, so record those events alongside the date ranges rather than treating a coincident date as proof of cause.

Turn on all four headline metrics
The Performance report shows clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position. Google Search Central Help describes it as showing “important metrics about how your site performs in Google Search results.” Enable all four so that one metric does not conceal the others.

Average position is an aggregate reporting measure. Results vary by time, location, device, and a searcher’s recent activity, so the number is not a promise that every person saw one fixed rank. Read it with impressions and clicks, not as a standalone rank tracker.

Break the site total down by queries and pages
Open the Queries tab to find which searches lost or gained visibility. Then open Pages to see whether the change is concentrated in a single URL, a template, or a broad group of URLs. Select the position metric and compare the current period with the previous period; sort by the difference to surface the largest movements.
Site totals can hide opposite movements. One group of pages may gain impressions while another loses them, leaving the overall average nearly unchanged. Query and page views reveal whether the perceived loss affects a key topic, a page type, or the whole property.
Use segments only when they answer a specific question
After identifying an affected query or page group, add dimensions that could explain the pattern:
- Country: determine whether visibility changed in one market rather than worldwide.
- Device: separate mobile and desktop behavior when a layout or usability change could affect one experience.
- Search appearance: check whether a rich-result format or another presentation changed.
- Search type: compare Web, Image, Video, or News data when the site receives traffic from more than one result type.
- Dates: use the trend view to distinguish a one-day anomaly from a sustained movement.
Change one dimension at a time so you can describe the scope precisely. A decline limited to mobile in one country is a different problem from a decline across every device and market.
Understand chart and table differences
The chart is aggregated by property, while table aggregation depends on the selected dimension. Pages and Search appearance are aggregated by page. Consequently, a chart total and a table total may not match exactly without indicating a tracking failure. Check the selected dimension and filters before escalating a discrepancy.

3. Check Page Indexing for site-level explanations
Look for a change in the indexed-page trend
Open Page Indexing and compare the indexed URL count with the period when search visibility changed. A fall in indexed pages accompanied by a rise in non-indexed URLs can explain a broad loss of impressions, especially when the affected URLs belong to the same template or directory.
The report groups URLs by the reason Google gives for not indexing them. Review the trend and the issue groups rather than relying only on the headline count.
Read the stated reason before calling an exclusion an error
“Not indexed” is not automatically a defect. Some URLs are intentionally excluded, duplicate, redirected, blocked, or otherwise unsuitable for indexing. Investigate whether the reported reason matches the site’s intended setup. Pay particular attention to groups that appeared suddenly, grew sharply, or correspond to pages that should be searchable.
Access restrictions and template-level problems deserve priority because one change can affect many URLs. Document the affected pattern, fix the underlying configuration, and then allow Google time to recrawl before judging the result.
4. Inspect representative URLs
Choose examples that represent the pattern
From the Performance and Page Indexing reports, select a few URLs that lost impressions and a few that did not. Include the highest-value page, a page from any affected template, and one URL that appears healthy. Inspecting only one page can miss a directory-wide or canonicalization problem.

Read the Google Index data
URL Inspection reports whether Google has data for the URL and shows details such as the selected canonical and the last crawl. Check whether the URL is indexed, whether crawling is allowed, whether fetching succeeded, and whether indexing is permitted. A canonical selected by Google that differs from the page’s preferred canonical can explain why the expected URL is not receiving impressions.
Use the live test for current accessibility, not as a ranking guarantee
The live test checks whether Google can access the URL now. It is useful for current server responses, robots controls, and similar access questions, but it is not a complete substitute for indexed data or the other reports. The live result can differ from the stored index, and an indexed URL is not guaranteed to appear in Search. URL Inspection also does not check every eligibility condition, including manual actions and policy issues.

Manual Actions
Open Manual Actions when the site or a substantial section has disappeared, particularly if the timing does not match an indexing change. A manual action can affect a subset of pages or an entire site. Read the affected patterns and every listed remediation requirement, correct all of them, and use the report’s review process to request reconsideration. Do not assume that fixing one example resolves every affected URL.
Security Issues
Check Security Issues when pages are missing or traffic drops sharply alongside signs of hacking, malware, unwanted downloads, or other compromise. Follow the issue-specific cleanup guidance and verify the affected areas before evaluating search performance again.
Messages
Review Search Console messages as well. Google says affected site owners are notified in the Manual Actions report and message center. A notification can provide the policy or security context that the Performance chart cannot show.
6. Compare the timing with changes outside Search Console
Once the reports define the scope, build a timeline containing migrations, redirects, template releases, robots or canonical changes, content edits, outages, seasonal events, major news, and known competitor changes. A matching date is a reason to investigate the change, not proof that it caused the ranking movement. Google’s guidance notes that several factors can coincide, including shifts in user interest and competitor activity.
Use the timeline to choose the next test. For example, a position and impression decline limited to pages changed in one deployment points toward an implementation review; a worldwide decline across unchanged pages with a manual action points toward policy remediation. Keep those as hypotheses until the relevant report or technical evidence supports them.
A practical diagnostic sequence
- Verify scope: confirm the property, protocol, hostname, search type, and date ranges.
- Measure the change: compare clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position in Performance.
- Locate it: use Queries and Pages, then segment by country, device, appearance, or search type when relevant.
- Check index coverage: compare Page Indexing trends and investigate newly enlarged reason groups.
- Inspect URLs: test representative winners and losers for crawl, fetch, indexing, canonical, and last-crawl details.
- Check policy and security: review Manual Actions, Security Issues, and messages for sitewide signals.
- Reconstruct context: compare the dates with releases, migrations, demand changes, news, and competitor activity.
- Allow recrawl time: after fixing a confirmed issue, wait for Google to recrawl before deciding whether visibility has recovered.
Common misreadings to avoid
- “Clicks fell, so rankings fell.” Check impressions, CTR, and position together; clicks alone cannot distinguish those causes.
- “The average position fell by one, so every page lost one place.” It is an aggregate affected by query mix, location, device, and other result variation.
- “A live URL Inspection test means the page ranks.” It tests current accessibility, not guaranteed Search appearance.
- “Every non-indexed URL is broken.” Evaluate the reason and whether exclusion is intentional.
- “The chart and table disagree, so tracking is faulty.” Their aggregation rules differ by property and dimension.
- “The edit happened the day traffic fell, so it caused the loss.” Corroborate timing with indexing, URL, policy, and external evidence.
- “A fix should restore traffic immediately.” Recrawling and reprocessing can take time; judge recovery only after Google has had an opportunity to revisit the affected URLs.
What Search Console can—and cannot—establish
Search Console can establish where the reported change occurred: which metrics moved, which queries and pages are involved, whether indexed-page counts changed, and whether representative URLs have crawl or canonical issues. Manual-action and security reports can reveal sitewide policy or compromise signals.

It cannot prove a single causal story from a before-and-after comparison. Search behavior, competitors, result layouts, technical changes, and Google’s systems can overlap. A defensible diagnosis therefore connects the Performance pattern to corroborating index, URL, policy, security, and timeline evidence instead of treating one chart as a verdict.
