There is no single master switch for every download on a Pixel. Use Smart storage for automatic removal of backed-up photos and videos, delete movies and music from the app that downloaded them, review Google Maps > Offline maps, and limit which device folders Google Photos backs up. These controls target different storage pools, so the right setting depends on whether the problem is space on the phone or space in your Google Account.
Start with Settings > Storage > Free up space > Menu > Settings > Smart storage. Then audit offline maps and in-app downloads. If your Google Account quota—not the phone—is full, adjust Google Photos backup folders and choose Storage saver quality.

What each Pixel setting actually controls
Google Pixel Help describes storage as the place where you keep data such as music and photos. The controls below do not all clean the same place: some remove local files from the phone, while others reduce future growth in your Google Account.

The key distinction is simple: a phone-storage problem requires deleting or relocating local files; an account-storage problem requires reducing what Google Photos backs up or the size of those backups.

Turn on Pixel Smart storage first
Pixel’s built-in Smart storage is the closest setting to an automatic “stop filling my phone” control. It is designed to clear photos and videos that are already backed up when the phone is nearly out of space. Because the files have a cloud copy, this is safer than deleting items that have not finished backing up.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage.
- Choose Free up space.
- Tap the Menu button, then Settings.
- Turn on Smart storage.
Smart storage is selective. It targets backed-up photos and videos rather than every download on the device. A movie saved by a streaming app, an offline map, or music downloaded for offline listening remains under that app’s control. If the phone still reports low storage after enabling Smart storage, continue with the app-specific sections below.
Before relying on automatic removal, open Google Photos and confirm that important pictures show as backed up. Smart storage is a space-management feature, not a second backup system.

Understand the separate Files by Google Smart storage control
Files by Google exposes a related control with its own documented rules:
- Open Files by Google.
- Tap Menu.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Smart storage and enable it.
Google’s Files help documentation says this automatic photo deletion runs only after backed-up photos have been saved for 60 days and the device has less than 25% of its storage available. Google also limits that automatic deletion feature to Pixel users on Android S. Those conditions are separate from the Pixel Settings switch, so the two controls should not be treated as identical on every Android version.

This feature removes the on-device photo copy after backup; it is not a tool for clearing downloaded films, songs, or map data. If you need a particular image stored locally, move or copy it elsewhere before automatic cleanup can apply.
Remove automatic and offline media from the app that downloaded it
Downloads belong to the application that created them. Android’s general storage screen can show that an app is using space, but the reliable way to remove the content is usually the app’s own download manager. Deleting a download there preserves the app and your account while reclaiming the local file.
Google TV movies and shows
- Open Google TV.
- Go to Library.
- Find the downloaded video.
- Tap Downloaded.
- Choose Remove.
Removing a Google TV download removes its offline copy from the phone. You can download it again later if the title remains available to your account and service region.
YouTube Music downloads
- Open YouTube Music.
- Tap your Profile photo.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Downloads and storage.
- Review the downloaded music and use the available removal controls for items you no longer need offline.
Use the same principle for other media apps: look for Library, Downloads, Offline, or Storage inside that app. Pixel Smart storage will not automatically remove these files merely because they are large.
Delete or relocate Google Maps offline files
Offline Maps are local files, not temporary browser cache. They stay on the device until you delete or replace them, and Google Maps can update them when automatic updates are enabled.

Review and delete saved map areas
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Select Offline maps.
- Tap a saved area to update it or choose its delete option.
Delete regions you no longer travel through, especially large areas saved for a past trip. Deleting an offline map removes offline navigation for that area; online Maps remains available whenever you have a connection.

- Open Google Maps > profile picture > Offline maps.
- Tap Settings.
- Review Download preferences.
- Review Auto-update offline maps. If you want complete control over when map data is downloaded, choose the manual option offered on your device.
Google Maps Help states that offline maps are stored on internal storage by default. On devices that support portable SD storage, you can change the storage preference so new offline maps use the card instead. Changing that preference requires downloading the map again, so allow enough temporary space for the replacement download.
When an SD card helps—and when it does not
An SD card can move the storage burden for supported offline maps away from the phone’s internal storage. It does not automatically relocate Google TV, YouTube Music, or Google Photos files, and the option is not present on every Pixel. Check the Offline maps storage preference on the specific device before planning around it.
Stop Google Photos from backing up every device folder
Google Photos can back up more than the camera folder. Screenshots, messaging attachments, edited exports, and folders created by other apps can all add to your Google Account if they are selected for backup.
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture and open Photos settings.
- Tap Backup.
- Open Back up device folders.
- Turn off folders that do not need a cloud copy.
Pay particular attention to the Back up all device folders switch. When it is enabled, newly created folders can be included automatically, allowing backup growth to resume after you clean up an older folder. Disabling a folder stops future uploads from that location; it does not erase the local files already on the phone.

Find large items already using account storage
- In Google Photos, open Photos settings.
- Tap Backup.
- Choose Manage storage.
- Review the recommended categories, such as large photos and videos.
- Delete only items you have verified are no longer needed, or keep a separate copy before removing them.
Google Photos lists recommended cleanup categories under the storage summary. This workflow addresses the account quota and the backed-up library; it is different from removing a local movie, music download, or offline map.

If the phone has free space but Google Account storage is the constraint, change the quality used for future backups:
- Open Google Photos.
- Go to Photos settings > Backup.
- Tap Photos & videos quality.
- Choose between Original quality and Storage saver.
Original quality counts toward Google Account storage. Storage saver is the space-conscious choice, although Google notes that some files may not be compressible. This setting changes the size of backed-up photos and videos; it does not delete local downloads and does not move offline Maps data.
Changing quality is therefore a quota decision, not a cure for a full Pixel. For a phone that is physically out of space, use Smart storage and the app-specific deletion steps. For an account that is full, limit folders, clean large items, and use Storage saver for future backups.

- Open Settings > Storage and determine whether the pressure is on device storage.
- Enable Pixel Smart storage so backed-up photos and videos can be reclaimed automatically.
- Check Google Maps > Offline maps and delete obsolete regions or review automatic updates.
- Open Google TV, YouTube Music, and other media apps to remove their downloads from inside the app.
- If Photos is consuming your Google Account quota, review device folders, turn off unnecessary backup sources, and inspect Manage storage.
- Choose Storage saver only when account capacity—not local phone space—is the problem.
This order avoids a common mistake: changing a cloud-backup setting while leaving several gigabytes of local entertainment or map data untouched.
Common surprises and how to handle them
Smart storage is on, but the phone is still full
Smart storage only addresses backed-up photos and videos. Check the storage categories for offline maps, downloaded media, and large app-specific files, then remove those items in their owning apps.
A map appears to consume space again
Offline maps may be auto-updated. Review the map’s entry and the Auto-update offline maps setting, then delete regions that are no longer useful.
Google Photos keeps adding folders
Revisit Backup > Back up device folders and check whether Back up all device folders is enabled. New folders can otherwise re-enter the backup set.

Removing a local download affects phone storage, not the Google Account quota. Account usage requires Photos cleanup or a change to backup sources and quality.
