The exact controls depend on your Pixel model and Camera app version, so treat the menu paths below as a guide and confirm the labels on your device.
Natural does not mean unprocessed. Pixel cameras still apply HDR, tone mapping, sharpening and noise reduction. The goal is to avoid adding an obvious creative treatment or an aggressive exposure change while preserving realistic proportions, lighting and color.

Start with these natural-photo defaults
| Setting | Natural starting point | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Look | Default Look | Choose a stylized Look only for an intentional creative effect. Google currently documents Camera Looks for Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. |
| Brightness and color | Leave controls near their automatic result; make small changes after tapping the subject. | Reduce exposure when highlights clip; lift shadows only enough to reveal important detail. |
| Aspect ratio | Full image (4:3) | Use Wide crop (16:9) when you specifically want a wide composition. |
| Gridlines | Optional | Turn them on when you need straighter horizons or more deliberate framing. |
| File type | JPEG for a simple workflow | RAW + JPEG when you expect to edit exposure, white balance or shadows later. |
| Low light | Night Sight with the phone and subject still | Use flash only when it does not create glare, halos or an unnatural foreground. |
These recommendations follow Google’s current Pixel Camera instructions for settings, exposure, file formats and low-light shooting (Camera app settings; high-quality photos; low-light photography).
Choose the default Camera Look instead of a stylized treatment
Camera Looks change the way the phone renders an image, including its HDR photo processing. A stylized Look can add a deliberate artistic character, but it is the first setting to check when a photo seems too dramatic, contrasty or color-treated.

How to change the Look
- Open the Pixel Camera app.
- Open Camera settings, usually through the gear icon or the settings panel.
- Find the Camera Look option and select the default Look for everyday photographs.
- Take a new test photo in the same light and compare it with the previous rendering.
Google’s current help page lists this Camera Look control for the Pixel 11 family: Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Do not assume an older Pixel has the same menu or that a setting with a similar name behaves identically. If Camera Look is absent, your model or software version may not support the control; there is no need to force a substitute setting.
Use brightness, shadow and color controls sparingly
Automatic exposure is usually the best baseline for a natural result. Before changing a slider, tap the main subject so the camera meters and focuses on the part of the scene that matters. Pixel’s photo guidance describes controls for brightness, shadows, color and exposure, but it does not prescribe one value that works for every model or scene.
Correct highlights before lifting shadows
If a bright sky, white shirt or window is losing texture, make a small negative exposure or brightness adjustment. If faces or dark clothing disappear into black, raise shadows modestly rather than lifting the whole image until the highlights wash out. Review the preview for clipped whites and unnaturally gray blacks before pressing the shutter.
Keep color believable
Color controls are useful for a scene that is visibly too cool, too warm or too muted, but large changes quickly look less realistic. Use the smallest adjustment that restores the scene’s appearance under the actual light. Mixed lighting, colored walls and sunset scenes can fool automatic color, so compare the preview with the subject rather than chasing a universally neutral look.

Lock exposure when the composition is difficult
On supported Pixel models, tapping and holding the subject can lock focus and exposure. This helps when a bright background causes the face or foreground to become too dark. Recheck the lock after recomposing because the original exposure may no longer suit the new frame. Google documents tapping for focus and exposure in its high-quality photo guidance (Google Pixel Camera Help).
Use Pro Controls only when you understand the trade-offs
Pro Controls can expose manual focus, shutter speed and ISO, but they are restricted to the Pro phones listed by Google. They are not universal Pixel settings, and the available controls can vary by generation.
Manual focus
Manual focus is useful for a subject behind glass, a close object or a scene where autofocus repeatedly chooses the wrong plane. Set focus on the intended subject, then avoid moving the phone forward or backward after setting it.

Shutter speed
A faster shutter helps freeze movement but can make a low-light frame darker or noisier. A slower shutter gathers more light but records hand movement and subject movement as blur. For people, pets and children, automatic or faster shutter behavior is often more natural than a bright but smeared image.

ISO
Higher ISO brightens a dark capture at the cost of more visible noise and stronger noise reduction. Keep ISO as low as the scene allows, but do not underexpose severely and expect to recover clean detail later. Because Pro Controls are model-specific, open your Camera app’s own help or settings panel before following a menu path.
Keep the full 4:3 frame unless a wide crop is intentional
Pixel’s sensor captures a taller 4:3 image. The 16:9 option is a wide crop, not a way to record extra width. Choose Full image (4:3) when you want maximum scene area, flexibility for later cropping or the least risk of cutting off a subject. Choose Wide crop (16:9) when the final image is specifically for a wide display, video-style composition or a deliberate cinematic frame.
Set the ratio and grid
- Open the Camera app and reveal the photo controls.
- Tap the ratio or crop control and select Full image (4:3) or Wide crop (16:9).
- Open Camera settings if you want gridlines, then enable the grid option available on your model.
- Use the grid intersections to position a subject and the horizontal lines to keep horizons level.
Changing the ratio changes framing, not the camera’s color processing. Google describes both ratios and gridlines in its settings documentation (Camera app settings).

JPEG is the finished, processed file most people can share immediately. RAW + JPEG saves a paired JPEG and RAW file: the JPEG is convenient, while the RAW retains additional sensor data for compatible editing software. RAW does not automatically look more natural; it gives you more control over how the final image is developed.

Use JPEG when you want simplicity
- There is no planned editing session.
- You need smaller files and a straightforward backup or sharing workflow.
- You prefer the Pixel’s completed HDR and computational processing.
Use RAW + JPEG when editing is part of the plan
- You regularly adjust exposure, white balance, highlights or shadows.
- You want to create your own interpretation instead of accepting the camera’s final tone curve.
- You can store, back up and organize an additional large file for each photo.
Turn on paired files
- Open Camera settings.
- Find the RAW/JPEG or file-format option and enable RAW + JPEG.
- Capture a test image, then open Photos or your file browser to confirm that both files were saved.
- Edit the RAW copy in an app that supports the format, while keeping the JPEG as a quick reference.
Google explains that enabling RAW/JPEG saves paired files and that Photos can show separate RAW and JPEG versions (Camera app settings; editing photos on Pixel). The extra file increases storage use and adds an import, edit and export step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Night Sight for low light, and stabilize everything
Night Sight is designed for dark scenes and can produce a more natural result than a harsh direct flash, but it needs time to capture and combine exposures. Hold the phone still and ask the subject to remain still. A tripod, phone holder or stable table is helpful; a free stable surface works just as well when available.
Night Sight workflow
- Move to the brightest natural or indirect light available without ruining the composition.
- Open Night Sight or let the Camera app suggest it in a low-light scene.
- Brace your hands, lean against a solid surface or place the phone on a tripod or stationary surface.
- Tap the subject to focus and wait for the capture to finish without moving the phone.
- Check the result for movement blur before changing settings or reshooting.
When flash makes the photo less natural
Flash can create a bright foreground, hard shadows, red-eye-like reflections or halos around lights. If you see glare or halos, turn flash off and try Night Sight with steadier support. Google also recommends trying natural or indirect light when flash causes quality problems (low-light guidance; photo and video quality troubleshooting).
Recommended Free Tools
Night Sight cannot defeat a moving subject. For a walking person, waving pet or moving vehicle, a shorter exposure may look more realistic even if the frame is darker. Stabilize the phone, add available light and take several frames rather than relying on one long capture.

Clean the camera glass before changing settings
A smudge or obstruction can mimic overprocessing: lights may bloom into halos, fine detail can look blurred, straight lines may appear odd and colors can shift. Before changing exposure or Looks, inspect the camera area and remove any protective film or case element that covers it.
- Remove an obstructing accessory or protective piece.
- Gently wipe the camera glass with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.
- Take a comparison photo of a detailed subject with a bright light in the frame.
- If blur, lines or color distortion remain, restart the Camera app and check whether the problem occurs in every lens and mode.
Google gives the same cleaning and obstruction checks in its quality troubleshooting guidance (Fix photo or video quality issues). Do not use abrasive material or press hard against the lens cover.
Understand which choices solve which problem
| Choice | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Default Look | Everyday scenes that should retain ordinary HDR rendering. | Less distinctive than a creative Look. |
| Stylized Look | An intentional artistic treatment. | Can make color, contrast or tone feel less true to the scene; availability is limited to supported models. |
| 4:3 | Maximum captured image area and later cropping flexibility. | Not as wide as a 16:9 presentation. |
| 16:9 | A deliberate wide composition. | It crops the 4:3 frame and can remove headroom or foreground detail. |
| JPEG | Fast sharing and minimal file management. | Less latitude for major edits than a RAW file. |
| RAW + JPEG | Editing exposure, color and tonal balance later. | More storage and a separate editing workflow; RAW is not automatically more natural. |
| Flash | A nearby subject that needs immediate extra light. | Can produce glare, halos and hard, artificial shadows. |
| Night Sight with support | Low-light scenes where the phone and subject can stay still. | Capture takes longer and movement can blur. |
A repeatable shooting routine
- Clean the camera glass and remove anything covering it.
- Confirm the default Camera Look, if your model offers Looks.
- Select 4:3 unless you have a specific 16:9 composition in mind.
- Enable gridlines if a level horizon or careful alignment matters.
- Tap the subject, inspect brightness and color, and make only a small correction if necessary.
- Use focus and exposure lock for a difficult subject or bright background.
- Choose JPEG for a finished file or RAW + JPEG before a planned editing session.
- In low light, switch to Night Sight, stabilize the phone and wait for capture to complete.
- Review highlights, shadows, skin tones and motion before leaving the scene.
Model and software limitations to check
Pixel Camera features are not uniform across generations. Google’s documentation limits Pro Controls to listed Pro phones, restricts 50 MP capture to specified Pro models, and identifies the current Camera Looks article with the Pixel 11 family. A setting may therefore be missing, renamed or placed in a different panel on your phone. Camera app updates can also move controls.

What a natural Pixel photo should look like
A natural result keeps recognizable color, believable brightness and undistorted proportions while retaining useful detail in highlights and shadows. The practical path is conservative: default Look, restrained exposure changes, 4:3 framing, a clean lens and a stable phone in low light. Add RAW only when you are prepared to edit it, and treat every creative Look, crop or flash burst as an intentional choice rather than a correction for an automatic problem.
