The moving map on your screen is usually Google Maps’ biggest battery load during navigation. Google’s Navigation SDK guidance identifies screen rendering as the highest power consumer in mobile navigation apps, followed by location work such as GPS updates and cellular-radio communication. Weak mobile reception can increase radio use. The safest savings come from reducing screen-on time and brightness, keeping the phone cool, and reviewing background-location permission when you do not use features that need it. Keep location available for active turn-by-turn directions.
Which Google Maps settings use the most battery?
There is no official, universal percentage for how much battery each Google Maps setting uses. Drain changes with the phone model, display technology, brightness, temperature, navigation mode, cellular signal and whether the route is being actively followed. Google has not published a setting-by-setting test that would support a claim such as “this toggle saves 20 percent.”

Google’s developer guidance does identify the main categories of work involved in navigation. They are useful for deciding what to change first.

|---|---|---|
| Visible, moving map | Google says screen rendering usually causes the highest power consumption in mobile navigation apps. The display and graphics hardware must keep updating the map. | Reduce screen-on time and brightness when you can still navigate safely. |
| GPS and other location updates | Navigation repeatedly determines the phone’s position so the route and turn instructions stay current. | Do not disable location during active turn-by-turn navigation. |
| Cellular-radio communication | Maps may communicate over the mobile network. A phone in poor coverage can work harder than one near a strong base station. | Expect higher drain in weak reception; reducing screen use helps even when the signal cannot be improved. |
| Background location | Some Maps features can request location when the app is not on screen, including Google Maps Location Sharing. | Review app permission if you do not use background-dependent features. |
| Timeline | Timeline regularly saves precise location to a personal map when enabled. Google describes collection frequency, not a measured battery cost. | Treat it as a history and privacy control, not a proven battery fix. |
These categories are general mobile-navigation guidance, not a controlled comparison of every consumer Google Maps setting. If your phone becomes hot or loses charge unusually quickly, use its built-in battery-usage screen to see whether Maps is actually the leading consumer before changing unrelated location controls.

What can you safely turn off while navigating?
Reduce the map’s screen time
The strongest evidence-backed adjustment is to stop displaying the moving map continuously when you do not need to look at it. Google recommends locking the phone or putting the navigation app in the background as power-saving approaches. Do this only when it leaves you able to follow directions safely. For a drive, set the route before moving, rely on legally permitted voice guidance where appropriate, and look at the map only when it is safe to do so. Walking and cycling require a different judgment because you may need the visual map more often.
Locking the screen is not the same as disabling location. An active route may still need location and radio resources, so the saving comes primarily from no longer powering the display and constantly redrawing the map. Your phone’s behavior can differ by operating-system version and power-management settings, so verify that the navigation cues you need remain available before relying on a locked screen.
Lower brightness and use an appropriate display mode
Lower the screen brightness to the minimum that remains clearly visible in your surroundings. Do not dim the display so far that you cannot read a turn, identify a hazard or operate the phone safely. Google’s Android guidance also points to adaptive brightness and dark mode for OLED or AMOLED displays. On those panels, darker pixels can reduce display power in some situations; the effect is not a guaranteed Maps-wide saving and is not equivalent on every screen type.
Adaptive brightness can prevent the display from staying unnecessarily bright indoors or at night, while still raising brightness in sunlight. If your phone repeatedly chooses a level that is too bright, a manual lower setting may be more useful. Brightness changes affect the display directly; they do not reduce GPS or cellular work.

Keep the phone cool
Heat matters to navigation power and performance. Avoid leaving the phone on a sun-heated dashboard, under a windshield, or inside a parked vehicle. Remove a thick case temporarily if it traps heat, and keep vents or airflow from being blocked. Cooling does not turn off a Maps feature, but it can prevent the device from operating under an unnecessarily high thermal load.
Charge for long routes
For a long navigation session, charging in the vehicle is a practical way to handle heavy use. It is an accessory solution, not a setting that reduces Maps’ consumption. Use a suitable charger and place the phone where it remains visible and cool rather than in direct sunlight.
Android: limit Google Maps to “while in use” when appropriate
On Pixel’s documented Android flow, open Settings > Location > App location permissions, select Google Maps, and review the available access choices. Android presents states such as “Allow all the time” and “Allow only while using the app”; wording can vary by Android release and phone manufacturer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the app permission page. Go to Settings, then Location, then App location permissions, and choose Google Maps.
- Choose “Allow only while using the app” if you want Maps to receive location while you are actively using it but do not need it to obtain location in the background.
- Check the features you depend on. Google says some features, including Location Sharing, need background location access. Removing “all the time” access can stop or limit those features.
- Leave location permission enabled for active navigation. Denying permission prevents Maps from using location, including while you are using the app, so turn-by-turn positioning cannot work normally.
Foreground-only permission is the more targeted change: it limits Maps without switching off location for every app. It is sensible when you rarely use background features, but it is not a guaranteed battery saving because Google does not quantify the reduction for a particular device.

iPhone: review Maps in Location Services
On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, find Google Maps, and review its access level. Apple explains that apps with “While In Use” access may ask to use location in the background. When background access is allowed, iOS periodically reminds you and shows those locations on a map.
- Open Location Services. Go to Settings, Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Select Google Maps. Choose the least-permissive option that still supports the features you use.
- Keep access for navigation. Turning off Location Services prevents apps from accessing location through that service and limits the performance of various apps, including navigation.
- Reconsider background access only when you do not need it. Location Sharing and other background-dependent behavior may require permission beyond foreground use.
Apple’s labels and available choices can change with iOS versions. The important distinction is per-app access versus device-wide Location Services: changing Maps’ permission is narrower, while switching Location Services off affects many other apps.
Should you turn off Location Accuracy, Wi-Fi scanning or Bluetooth scanning?
Android Location Accuracy combines available Wi-Fi access points, cell towers, GPS and device sensors to estimate location more quickly and accurately, especially when GPS is obscured or unavailable. Android also offers Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning controls on some devices.

Disabling them can reduce accuracy or change how location is obtained, while any battery benefit depends on the phone, surroundings and other activity. Do not use a blanket “turn everything off” recipe. If navigation is unreliable, restoring the accuracy aids may improve the experience even if the screen remains the largest power load.

Does Google Maps drain battery in the background?
“Background” can mean two different things. First, you may have an active route while the map is no longer visible. Second, Maps may be permitted to obtain location when you are not actively looking at it for a feature such as Location Sharing. Those cases should not be treated as identical.
Background permission is a capability, not proof that Maps is continuously using maximum power. It allows location requests outside the foreground when a feature needs them. If you do not use Location Sharing or another background-dependent function, limiting Maps to foreground access is a reasonable privacy and power-management step. If you do use those functions, removing permission can stop updates or make them incomplete.
For unexplained drain, inspect the phone’s battery-usage screen over the period in which the problem occurs. Compare Maps with the display, cellular service and other apps, and note whether the phone was navigating, searching for signal or running hot. This is more reliable than assuming a single permission or account setting is responsible.
Can you turn off location when you are not navigating?
Yes, but the broadness of the change matters. You can leave device location enabled and restrict Google Maps’ access, or switch location off at the device level. Per-app control is usually the safer choice when other apps still need location.

- Per-app restriction: Set Maps to “Allow only while using the app” on Android or review its access in iPhone Location Services. Maps can use location for an open route, while background-dependent features may no longer function.
- Device-wide location off: This prevents apps from accessing location through the system service and can limit navigation and many unrelated apps. Turn it back on before starting a route.
- Active navigation: Do not disable location as a general battery fix. GPS and location updates are part of keeping turn instructions accurate.
If you simply want to stop a completed trip from continuing to use resources, end the navigation session and close or background Maps according to your phone’s normal app controls. Do not assume that deleting a route or changing account history changes every form of location access.
Is turning off Timeline a battery-saving setting?
No proven battery saving has been established for disabling Timeline. Google describes Timeline as a Google Account setting that regularly saves precise location to a personal map when enabled, including when Google apps are not being used. Google says Timeline is off by default.
Google’s policy gives a qualitative example of collection frequency: while you are using navigation in Google Maps, Timeline might be collected multiple times per minute; when the phone is inactive, collection might occur once every few hours. Those examples describe data collection, not energy consumption, and they do not show that Timeline is the largest battery user.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTurning Timeline off also does not control location saved by other activity settings or other Google products. Use the Timeline control for location-history privacy. If your goal is battery life, start with the display, brightness, heat, signal conditions and app permission choices described above.
A safe battery-saving sequence
Use this order so that you address the most likely load without breaking navigation:
- Set the route before moving and reduce the map’s screen-on time when it is safe.
- Lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness; consider dark mode if your phone uses an OLED or AMOLED display.
- Keep the phone out of direct heat and maintain airflow.
- Leave location enabled for the active route.
- After the trip, review Maps’ app permission and choose foreground-only access if you do not use background features such as Location Sharing.
- Check the phone’s battery-usage screen if drain remains unusual, looking for display, signal or heat-related patterns rather than changing every location switch at once.
- For long journeys, connect an in-vehicle charger while keeping the phone cool and safely positioned.
This approach preserves the functions that directions require while targeting the resources Google identifies as power-heavy. It also avoids claiming a fixed saving that no official source has measured across phones.
