These controls do different jobs. Turning off a feature stops its future use according to that control, but it does not remove information already collected; deletion is a separate action.
Google’s privacy FAQ says Google Health and wellness data is not used for Google Ads and is kept separate from Ads data. That statement does not disable processing inside Google Health or sharing with connected services you authorize. Start with this privacy review
Open the Google Health app while signed in to the Google Account that replaced your Fitbit login. Work through these areas in order:
- Turn off Google Health features you no longer want to use.
- Check leaderboard and friend sharing, then review existing connections.
- Remove connected services, Health Connect or Apple Health access, and location permission where appropriate.
- Review Fitbit-device alerts, Google Health push notifications and promotional email separately.
- Export data before deleting it, if you may need a historical record.
- Use Google Health’s deletion controls for information already stored.
A privacy switch and a deletion command are not interchangeable. Keep that distinction in mind throughout the review.

Feature privacy controls: stop individual health features
Google Health groups feature-level controls in one place. To open them, use this path:
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Your data in Google Health.
- Tap Manage feature privacy controls.
- Review every control shown for your account and switch off features you do not want.
The list can include Irregular rhythm notifications, ECG, Cycle health, Advanced AI personalized insights, medical-record sync, Health Connect sync and Google Health Coach. Google does not show every control to every user; availability depends on the service, account, device and region.
What turning a feature off actually does
Disabling a feature tells Google Health to stop that feature’s use of data going forward, subject to the wording of the control. It does not erase readings, reports or other information collected while the feature was active. If your goal is to remove the old records, continue to the deletion section rather than assuming the privacy switch cleared them.

Health information may arrive from a paired device, manual entry, connected services, Health Connect, Apple Health, third-party apps or, in some cases, medical providers. A feature control may stop one processing path without revoking every source. After changing the feature settings, inspect the connections and permissions associated with each source.
Social sharing: separate friend visibility from integrations
Leaderboard sharing is controlled independently from feature privacy. Open Google Health settings > Social > Sharing preferences. Turn off sharing for Steps and Cardio load if you do not want friends to see those metrics on leaderboards.

Google says establishing a friend connection shares your Google Account name, profile picture and email address. Step count and cardio load can then appear on friend leaderboards unless you change the privacy preferences. Review the list of existing friends as well as the leaderboard switches; changing a leaderboard preference does not necessarily remove an established connection.
Sharing and connected-service access are different
A friend leaderboard concerns people connected through Google Health. A connected service is an app, platform or health repository that receives or supplies data through an integration. Check both areas. If you no longer recognize a service, revoke its access in the relevant Google Health, Health Connect, Apple Health or device settings instead of relying only on the social-sharing controls.

Location and other device permissions
Google’s privacy FAQ says precise geolocation can be collected for selected features when location access is granted. If location is unnecessary for the features you keep, remove the permission in Google Health’s device settings or in your phone’s app-permission screen. The exact Android or iOS labels vary by operating system.
Removing location permission affects future access; it is not a request to erase historical location-linked records. Use Your data in Google Health > Deletion options for that separate task.
Notifications have three independent control layers
Former Fitbit users often change one notification setting and expect every alert to stop. Google Health separates alerts into three routes:

Fitbit-device alerts from an Android phone
For alerts that your phone relays to a paired device, open Connections, select the paired device, then choose Notifications. Select the categories and apps that may send alerts. The categories can include calls, texts, calendar events, email and other apps, but the supported choices depend on the Fitbit model.

The phone must allow notifications for the underlying app. Android Focus or Do Not Disturb can suppress them, as can the wearable’s own Do Not Disturb or sleep mode. If an alert is missing, check all four points:
- The app is enabled in the paired-device notification list.
- Android notification permission is enabled for that app.
- The phone is not in a mode that suppresses notifications.
- The wearable is not in Do Not Disturb or sleep mode.
Changing Google Health push settings will not change these device-relay permissions.
Google Health app push notifications
To control alerts produced by the app itself, tap your profile picture or initial, open Google Health settings, then select Push notifications. Review each item individually. These are app alerts on the phone, not messages relayed from the phone to a Fitbit device.
Promotional email
Promotional email is a third channel. Use the email’s unsubscribe link or the promotional-email preference in Google Health app settings. Unsubscribing from marketing mail does not disable health alerts, and disabling app push notifications does not unsubscribe you from email.

Export data before deleting or changing accounts
If you may need a record of your activity, export first. Google’s export instructions say to download your Google data and make sure Google Health is selected. Large archives can take several days to prepare, so do not wait until immediately before deleting an account or changing access.
The export help also documents a legacy Fitbit-login archive path for people who have not migrated. That documentation does not establish that every legacy account remains accessible now. Use the current Google Account export route where possible, and do not assume an old Fitbit sign-in will work.
Deletion options inside Google Health
For records already stored, open Your data in Google Health > Deletion options. Choose the data type and time scope offered by the app. Google documents options to delete:
- Today’s data.
- All data of a selected type.
- A custom date range.
Turning off a feature, removing a permission and deleting history are separate operations. Select the deletion scope carefully; deleting a historical type is not undone by turning the feature back on.

Account deletion is a different action
Deleting the Google Account or a service account is broader than disabling one feature. Google’s export guidance states that data is not available for deleted accounts. Preserve an export before account deletion if you might need the information later.
Migration dates that former Fitbit users need to understand
Google’s privacy FAQ says Fitbit-account users could no longer access Fitbit with a Fitbit account after May 19, 2026; continuing to use the service required moving to a Google Account. It also says users who did not move could download or delete their data before Google began processing data deletions on July 15, 2026.
Both dates have passed as of October 17, 2026. Treat them as historical transition context, not as an available extension. If your account was never moved, do not assume the legacy login is still usable or that the archive remains accessible. How the settings relate to Google’s advertising statement
Google states: “Your Google Health and wellness data won’t be used for Google Ads and is kept separate from Google Ads data.” This limits the stated use of Google Health and wellness data for Ads, but it does not mean the data stops being processed within Google Health, shared with a connected service you authorized, or visible to friends under your sharing choices. Review each of those controls directly.

- Confirm the account. Check the profile picture or initial to ensure you are editing the Google Account that contains your migrated health data.
- Audit feature controls. Open Your data in Google Health > Manage feature privacy controls and disable unwanted features.
- Audit sources. Review paired devices, Health Connect or Apple Health, third-party apps and medical-record connections. Remove permissions you no longer recognize.
- Audit social visibility. In Social > Sharing preferences, disable Steps or Cardio load sharing and inspect existing friend connections.
- Audit location. Remove precise-location permission if none of the features you retain needs it.
- Audit all notifications. Check paired-device alerts, Google Health push notifications and promotional email as three separate lists.
- Export if needed. Start a Google data export and wait for the archive before destructive changes.
- Delete deliberately. Use Deletion options to choose the exact data type and period you want removed.
Troubleshooting common surprises
A feature is not listed
Google shows controls according to account, service availability, device and region. An absent control does not prove that no related data exists. Check the connected source and the relevant device or mobile-system permission.
Alerts still appear after a switch is off
Identify the route first. A Fitbit-device alert may be controlled under the paired device, while a Google Health push alert is controlled under Push notifications. Promotional email has its own unsubscribe setting. Also check Android notification permission and Do Not Disturb states.
Old data remains after disabling a feature
That is expected under Google’s documented distinction between feature controls and deletion. Use the deletion options and select the required data type and time range.
An old Fitbit login no longer works
The migration deadlines have passed. Use the Google Account associated with the migration and Google’s current export or account-support instructions rather than repeatedly trying a legacy sign-in.
