Which free VPNs opened BBC iPlayer in recent tests?
Gizmodo’s October 2026 comparison reported that Windscribe Free and PrivadoVPN Free opened BBC iPlayer using their free UK servers. TechRadar separately reported successful access with Windscribe Free, while Tom’s Guide reported success with PrivadoVPN Free. These are reviewer test results, not a promise that every server or future session will work.

What the results do—and do not—tell you
A UK server is necessary for this use, but not sufficient
In the cited comparison, Windscribe and PrivadoVPN opened iPlayer, while Hide.me’s free UK server was blocked. That contrast shows why simply seeing “UK” in a server list cannot establish that a free VPN will work with iPlayer.

Streaming access can change
Streaming services may block VPN server IP addresses, and providers may replace or rotate those addresses. Windscribe says iPlayer may block the IP you are using and that its blocklist changes. Treat successful access as time-sensitive rather than permanent. Windscribe’s iPlayer troubleshooting guidance suggests trying another UK server, clearing cookies or cache, or switching between the browser and app. Those are provider suggestions, not independently verified fixes.
Data allowance is separate from access
The October 2026 comparison reported 10 GB per month for both Windscribe Free and PrivadoVPN Free. A data allowance affects how much you can use the service under the plan; it does not establish whether a server will get past iPlayer’s VPN blocking. Gizmodo also recorded free UK-server speed measurements of 182.21 Mbps for Windscribe and 180.04 Mbps for PrivadoVPN in that comparison. These are reviewer measurements, not forecasts of your connection or guarantees of playback quality.

Does a free Proton VPN plan work with BBC iPlayer?
Not for the UK-server route described in Proton’s own instructions: the company tells iPlayer viewers to connect to a UK Plus server and says Free users need to upgrade. Proton also warns that iPlayer may not always work. Its unlimited free data does not address the free tier’s lack of a UK location reported in Gizmodo’s comparison. Proton VPN’s BBC iPlayer instructions therefore support treating it as a paid alternative, not a free option for this task.

Yes. TV Licensing says a TV Licence is required to use BBC iPlayer on any device, including when using a VPN. The VPN does not remove that requirement. Check the official TV Licensing guidance for BBC iPlayer for the applicable rules.

How to choose between the tested free options
- Start with the evidence, not a promise. Windscribe Free and PrivadoVPN Free are the two free plans with reported iPlayer success in the October 2026 comparison and separate supporting reviews.
- Check the current allowance and server list. The cited 10 GB monthly figures and free UK locations are reported plan details from that comparison; confirm what the provider currently offers before relying on them.
- Expect occasional access failures. If a VPN connects but iPlayer does not load, try the provider’s suggested server, cookie/cache, or app-versus-browser changes. A failure after a previously successful session is consistent with blocking changing over time.
- Do not choose by speed figures alone. The reported measurements are review results from one comparison, not a dependable prediction of your own playback.
