For the Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel, install BIOS 3.09 only after confirming that BIOS 3.08 is already installed. Keep the charger connected throughout the update; Framework blocks rollback from 3.09. After updating, change a setting only for a clear need: use Windows Smart Charging for battery-charge management, choose Boot Performance Mode according to whether battery life or responsiveness matters more, and enable Power On AC only if you want the laptop to start automatically when power is connected. There is no documented, universal charge-limit percentage or single “best” performance mode for every owner.
First confirm that these instructions match your laptop
The release information discussed here applies specifically to the Framework Laptop 12 with a 13th Gen Intel processor. Framework has separate firmware for other Laptop 12 processor generations, the Framework Laptop 13, and other models. Do not install a BIOS package merely because the product name looks similar.

Those are firmware-level changes; they do not mean that every user should alter a visible setup option afterward. Install 3.09 when your exact model is eligible, but keep unrelated settings at their existing defaults unless you have a reason to change them.
Why the 3.08-to-3.09 sequence matters
BIOS 3.09 is not a one-step update from an older installation. Framework requires at least BIOS 3.08 as the baseline. On Windows, the 3.08 updater must run first and complete its restart before you launch the 3.09 updater. Linux through LVFS may present 3.08 before 3.09. The EFI updater chooses an appropriate updater based on the current baseline, but you must still follow the release-specific instructions.
Do not interrupt either stage, close an updater while it is writing firmware, or force a shutdown during an automatic reboot. Because rollback from 3.09 is blocked, treat the update as a one-way change and make sure you have a current backup before beginning.

Prepare safely before updating
- Verify the model and installed BIOS. Use Framework’s Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel resource page and its version-check procedure. Stop if the platform or version does not match.
- Back up important files. A BIOS update is not a substitute for an operating-system backup. Keep recovery media available if the computer is used for work.
- Connect the charger. Framework’s release instructions explicitly require a charger attached. Do not rely on a nearly full battery alone.
- Close applications and disconnect unnecessary peripherals. Leave the system undisturbed while the firmware writes and reboots.
- Read the method-specific instructions. Windows, Linux/LVFS, and the EFI-shell method have different files and steps. Do not mix an updater from one method with instructions for another.
- If using BitLocker and the EFI updater from Windows, suspend BitLocker first. Framework calls this out for that method. Resume protection after the firmware work is complete and Windows has started normally.
Choose an update method
| Method | Operating system or environment | Media required | Version handling | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor Windows updaters | Windows | No separate USB drive | Run the 3.08 updater, reboot, then run the 3.09 updater | Charger attached; allow every restart to finish |
| LVFS/fwupd | Linux | No separate USB drive | LVFS may offer 3.08 first and 3.09 afterward | Charger attached; battery may need to read below 100% for the update to appear |
| EFI shell updater | Booted outside the installed operating system | FAT32-formatted USB flash drive | The release instructions select the suitable updater for the current baseline | Boot with F12; suspend BitLocker first if launching this from Windows |
The USB drive is needed only for the EFI-shell route. Windows and Linux/LVFS do not require buying or preparing one.
Windows: install 3.08, then 3.09
- Download the Windows packages from the Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel BIOS 3.09 release instructions.
- Confirm that the installed BIOS is eligible. If it is older than 3.08, start with the supplied 3.08 updater.
- Keep the charger connected, close your work, and run the 3.08 updater.
- Let the updater restart the laptop and finish its progress screen. Do not press the power button during this stage.
- After Windows returns, verify that BIOS 3.08 is installed if the updater requires confirmation.
- Run the 3.09 updater and again allow the complete write-and-reboot sequence.
- Once Windows loads normally, check the BIOS version again and resume BitLocker if you suspended it for an EFI-based procedure.
If the 3.09 package refuses to run because the baseline is wrong, do not bypass the check. Install 3.08 using Framework’s documented sequence instead.

Linux: update through LVFS and fwupd
Framework distributes the Linux firmware through the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS). The documented command sequence is:
fwupdmgr refresh --force
fwupdmgr get-updates
fwupdmgr update
- Connect the charger and save your work.
- Run
fwupdmgr refresh --forceto refresh firmware metadata. - Run
fwupdmgr get-updatesand read the offered versions. LVFS can expose BIOS 3.08 before 3.09; install the offered baseline first, reboot if requested, then check again. - Run
fwupdmgr updateand follow the reboot prompts. Keep AC power connected until the firmware process is finished. - After the system returns, run
fwupdmgr get-updatesagain to see whether 3.09 is now available.
If fwupd offers nothing while the battery is at 100%
Framework’s troubleshooting instruction for this case is to discharge the battery to 95%, reconnect AC power, and retry the LVFS update. This 95% figure is a troubleshooting threshold for the update service, not a recommended everyday charging limit.
EFI shell: use a FAT32 USB drive
- Download the EFI update archive specified in the Laptop 12 BIOS 3.09 instructions.
- Extract its contents to a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32. The release instructions do not require a particular capacity or brand.
- If you are launching the EFI updater from Windows and BitLocker is enabled, suspend BitLocker before rebooting.
- Restart the laptop and press F12 to open the boot menu.
- Select the EFI or USB boot option and follow the on-screen, release-specific instructions.
- Leave the charger connected and do not remove the USB drive or interrupt automatic restarts until the process reports completion.
Which power and BIOS settings are worth changing?
The documented Laptop 12 firmware notes support a short, purpose-driven list rather than a universal tuning recipe. BIOS 3.06 added Battery Charge Limiting status functionality to support Windows Smart Charging. BIOS 3.07 documented changes to Setup navigation, Power On AC behavior, and Boot Performance Mode. The notes do not establish a single ideal value for every owner.
Battery charge limiting and Windows Smart Charging
On a supported Windows installation, use the operating system’s Smart Charging controls when you want to reduce the time the battery spends fully charged. BIOS 3.06 added the status functionality that allows that feature to work.
The checked Laptop 12 documentation does not provide a universal BIOS menu path or a Framework-approved maximum such as 80%, 90%, or 95% for every machine. Do not copy a percentage from a guide written for the Framework Laptop 13 or another generation and present it as a Laptop 12 requirement. If your Windows build exposes Smart Charging, follow its current controls and status messages; if it does not, leave the firmware setting at its default rather than guessing at a hidden threshold.

Boot Performance Mode
BIOS 3.07 fixed a CPU Fan Not Present error that could occur when Boot Performance Mode was set to Max Battery. That fix means Max Battery can be a valid choice when reducing boot-time power matters, but the release note does not quantify battery savings or establish that it is best for everyone.

- Choose a battery-oriented mode when the laptop is commonly started away from an outlet and a slower, less aggressive startup is acceptable.
- Choose a more performance-oriented mode when quick startup and immediate responsiveness matter more than minimizing boot-time power.
- After changing the mode, test a cold boot and a restart. If you see a fan-detection warning or unusual startup behavior, return to the previous mode and check Framework’s current release notes.
Power On AC
Framework says BIOS 3.07 enhanced Power On AC behavior. Enable it only when you want the laptop to start automatically as soon as a charger or dock supplies power—for example, in a fixed workstation or kiosk-style setup. Leave it off if an unexpected power restoration should not turn the computer on. The release notes do not promise a particular battery-life or performance gain from either choice.
F2 navigation from the F12 boot menu
BIOS 3.07 changed the F2 behavior in the F12 boot menu so reaching Setup is easier, including when navigating Secure Boot settings. This is a navigation improvement, not a setting that needs to be enabled. When you need firmware Setup, press F12 during startup and use the revised F2 route described by Framework rather than assuming that older key behavior still applies.
Settings and changes to avoid guessing about
- Do not force a charge percentage. The available Laptop 12 documentation supports Smart Charging status, not a universal numeric prescription.
- Do not import menus from another model. Battery Extender thresholds, BIOS paths, and power behavior documented for another Framework generation may not exist on this platform.
- Do not disable Secure Boot casually. The 3.07 notes make Setup/Secure Boot navigation easier, but they do not recommend disabling Secure Boot for ordinary use.
- Do not expect a firmware toggle to create a measured performance or battery-life improvement. No Laptop 12 measurement in the release notes quantifies such a gain.
- Do not update from an unverified package. Use the release page for the exact Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel platform.
Troubleshooting decision tree
The updater says the BIOS baseline is unsupported
Check the installed version. For BIOS 3.09, install BIOS 3.08 first. On Windows this means running the two vendor updaters in order; with LVFS, install the version offered first and check again after reboot. Do not attempt to skip the baseline.
The update is not offered at a full battery on Linux
Discharge to 95%, reconnect the charger, refresh LVFS metadata, and retry the fwupd commands. The 95% step is Framework’s documented workaround for the full-battery condition.

The computer will not start automatically after plugging in AC
Check the Power On AC setting. If it is disabled, the observed behavior is expected. If it is enabled but the behavior is inconsistent, return to the default and verify that BIOS 3.09 completed successfully before trying again.
A fan warning appears after changing Boot Performance Mode
Restore the previous mode and reboot. BIOS 3.07 addressed a specific CPU Fan Not Present error associated with Max Battery, but a warning that persists after the update needs model-specific support rather than repeated mode changes.
You need to revert BIOS 3.09
Framework states that rollback from 3.09 is permanently blocked. Do not use an older image or an unofficial flashing method. Record the exact error and consult the current Framework support instructions.
A practical settings checklist
- Install BIOS 3.09 only on a Framework Laptop 12 13th Gen Intel that is already on BIOS 3.08 or newer.
- Keep the charger attached for every update method.
- Use Windows Smart Charging for supported charge management; do not invent a universal percentage.
- Select Boot Performance Mode based on your priority, then test a cold boot and restart.
- Enable Power On AC only for an intentional auto-start workflow.
- Use the revised F12/F2 path when entering Setup or Secure Boot controls.
- Keep a FAT32 USB drive available only if you choose the EFI-shell method.
- Recheck Framework’s release page before updating because versions and procedures can change.
Bottom line
For this specific Laptop 12 platform, the most important “setting” is using the correct firmware sequence: BIOS 3.08 first, then BIOS 3.09, with AC power connected and no expectation of rollback. Afterward, make only need-based changes. Smart Charging is the documented route for Windows battery management, Max Battery is an option rather than a universal recommendation, and Power On AC is useful only when automatic startup from external power is wanted. Everything else should remain at its default until a clearly identified use case justifies a change.
