Which Four NETGEAR Tech Brands Are Actually Product Lines?

NETGEAR’s four clearest technology-brand examples are Orbi, Nighthawk, Meural and ProSafe. They are names listed in NETGEAR trademark material and, in the cases of Orbi and Nighthawk, explicitly described by NETGEAR as product lines. That is different from owning four separately incorporated technology companies. The title’s “four” is therefore an editorial grouping of brands and marks, not a verified count of subsidiaries.

The most important correction is Arlo. NETGEAR completed Arlo’s separation on December 31, 2018 and later stated that it no longer owned any Arlo shares. Older Arlo hardware may carry NETGEAR manufacturing history, but that does not establish current ownership.

What “owned by NETGEAR” means in this context

A company can control a subsidiary, register a trademark, sell a product under a brand, license a name, or retain manufacturing responsibilities after a corporate separation. Those relationships are not interchangeable. NETGEAR’s current trademark page lists names such as Orbi, Nighthawk, Meural, ProSafe, ReadyNAS, AirCard and NETGEAR Insight. A trademark list demonstrates that NETGEAR claims rights in those marks; it does not, by itself, identify a group of independently incorporated companies.

NETGEAR’s investor materials use “product line” language for Orbi and Nighthawk. That wording is the safest description for readers trying to understand the portfolio. Meural and ProSafe are useful additional examples from the trademark list, while ReadyNAS is another listed NETGEAR mark that could fill the same fourth-example role. None should be presented as a separate company without corporate evidence beyond the trademark registration.

#1 Best Overall

Four NETGEAR brands and what each represents

Brand or mark Product category Relationship documented by NETGEAR materials What the evidence does not establish
Orbi Networking, especially whole-home and mesh Wi-Fi systems Listed among NETGEAR marks and identified as a product line in investor materials A separately incorporated Orbi company
Nighthawk Networking hardware, including premium routers and related products Listed among NETGEAR marks and identified as a product line A standalone Nighthawk corporation
Meural Digital-art and connected-display products Listed as a NETGEAR mark Current retail availability of a particular Meural device or a separate Meural company
ProSafe Business and professional networking equipment Listed as a NETGEAR mark A distinct legal entity owned by NETGEAR

Orbi: NETGEAR’s mesh-networking line

Orbi is the name NETGEAR uses for a family of networking products designed around whole-home coverage. In official investor material, NETGEAR calls Orbi a product line rather than a company. The trademark listing supports the continuing brand relationship, while the product-line description explains how the name functions inside NETGEAR’s portfolio: customers may encounter multiple models and generations, but the corporate owner remains NETGEAR.

Model numbers, radio standards and bundle contents change over time, so the name alone is not a specification. A current buyer should check the exact model’s support page and regional availability instead of assuming that every Orbi unit has the same Wi-Fi generation, Ethernet configuration or service features. The ownership point is simpler: an Orbi product is branded as part of NETGEAR’s networking portfolio, not evidence of an Orbi subsidiary.

Nighthawk: the performance-oriented networking family

Nighthawk is another NETGEAR product line named in the company’s investor communications and trademark material. It is associated with higher-performance consumer and enthusiast networking equipment, including routers and related hardware. As with Orbi, the brand can cover many generations and form factors; “Nighthawk” is not a promise that two products share identical wireless standards, processor capacity or software support.

When a listing or package says “NETGEAR Nighthawk,” the useful interpretation is a NETGEAR-branded product family. It should not be read as proof that Nighthawk operates as an independent technology company, has its own public ownership structure or files separate corporate results.

Meural: a NETGEAR trademark with limited current-product evidence here

Meural appears on NETGEAR’s official trademark list, making it a valid example of a NETGEAR-controlled brand name. The available material does not verify the current retail status of a particular Meural canvas, subscription or accessory, so availability should be checked for the reader’s country and the exact model year.

Rank #2
NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router (RAX36) – Router Only, AX3000 3 Gbps Wireless Speed – Dual-Band Gigabit Internet – Covers 2,000 sq. ft., 25 Devices – Built-in VPN, USB 3.0, Gaming
  • Coverage up to 2,000 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
  • Ultrafast AX3000 speeds up to 3Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
  • This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
  • Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
  • Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports

This distinction matters because trademark ownership can continue while product assortments, sales channels or support policies change. Calling Meural a NETGEAR mark is supported; claiming that a specific Meural device is currently sold everywhere, or that Meural is a separately incorporated company, would go beyond the documented evidence.

ProSafe: a professional-networking brand name

ProSafe is also listed in NETGEAR’s trademark material and is commonly encountered in the context of business-oriented networking equipment. The mark identifies a NETGEAR product branding stream, not a separate corporate owner. Individual ProSafe switches, routers or management products can have different support lifecycles, so buyers should use the exact hardware revision and regional support documentation when checking compatibility.

ReadyNAS is another NETGEAR-listed mark and could be used as an alternative fourth example. It does not change the ownership analysis: both names are marks associated with NETGEAR’s portfolio, not four verified standalone companies.

Is Arlo still owned by NETGEAR?

No. NETGEAR completed the distribution of its remaining Arlo ownership on December 31, 2018. In its January 2019 fourth-quarter and full-year 2018 results release, NETGEAR reported that the distribution represented an 84.2% ownership position and stated: “Following the completion of the distribution, NETGEAR no longer owns any shares of Arlo common stock.”

NETGEAR’s legacy Arlo-products page adds an important historical qualification. Arlo entities became separate and independent companies on December 31, 2018, although some Arlo-branded products still present in retail channels had been manufactured by NETGEAR before the separation. A NETGEAR reference on an older camera, base station or package can therefore describe manufacturing history, firmware support or legacy documentation without indicating that NETGEAR currently owns Arlo.

Rank #3
NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 7 Router RS140, Up to 2,250 sq ft, 5 Gbps | Reliable Performance, Easy Set Up, 80 devices, 1× 2.5G + 3× Gigabit Ports, Dual Band, BE5000
  • FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated dual-band WiFi 7 router built to keep up with a growing home of streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart home devices.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 5 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, 1.2x faster than WiFi 6. MU-MIMO and OFDMA let multiple devices send and receive data simultaneously. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

The practical rule is to separate three dates and relationships: manufacture before separation, distribution of ownership on December 31, 2018, and the present corporate relationship after that distribution. Only the first explains why an older Arlo product may mention NETGEAR; the second and third determine current ownership.

What happened with Placemeter?

Placemeter is a different historical event. On December 21, 2016, NETGEAR announced completion of its acquisition of Placemeter. The announcement said Placemeter’s engineering team would be integrated into NETGEAR’s Arlo Smart Home Security team and that its computer-vision technology would be used for Arlo video analytics.

That announcement supports an acquisition of technology, personnel and capabilities for integration into the Arlo business. It does not establish Placemeter as a current, customer-facing NETGEAR brand or as one of four continuing standalone companies. Treating every acquired team or asset as a permanent brand would confuse an internal technology acquisition with a product name that customers can still buy.

Ownership timeline

  1. December 21, 2016: NETGEAR announced that it had completed the Placemeter acquisition. Its stated plan was to integrate the engineering team and computer-vision assets into Arlo’s smart-home security work.
  2. December 31, 2018: NETGEAR completed the distribution of its remaining Arlo ownership to shareholders, making the Arlo entities separate and independent companies.
  3. January 2019: NETGEAR’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2018 results release said that, after the distribution, NETGEAR no longer owned any Arlo common stock.
  4. Current trademark material: NETGEAR lists Orbi, Nighthawk, Meural, ProSafe, ReadyNAS, AirCard and NETGEAR Insight among its marks. The list describes trademark rights and brand association, not a count of legally separate technology companies.

How to check whether a name is a brand or a company

Readers researching a networking or smart-home label can avoid most ownership mistakes by checking the relationship in a fixed order:

  1. Look for the legal subject. A corporate filing, investor release or acquisition announcement names a company, subsidiary or shareholding. A trademark page names marks.
  2. Read the company’s own terminology. “Product line,” “brand,” “mark,” “business unit,” “subsidiary” and “independent company” carry different meanings. NETGEAR’s use of “product line” for Orbi and Nighthawk is more precise than calling them companies.
  3. Check the date. A current trademark page cannot undo a later spin-off, and an old product page cannot prove present ownership. Arlo’s December 31, 2018 separation is the key example.
  4. Separate manufacturing from ownership. A device made by NETGEAR before a transaction can remain in stores after the brand’s ownership changes.
  5. Confirm the exact product. Brand families contain multiple generations. Support status, firmware, standards and availability must be verified at the model level.

Common mistakes in lists of NETGEAR brands

Counting trademarks as subsidiaries

A trademark list can contain product families, historical names, software services and technology labels. Counting four entries from that list and calling them four companies overstates what the document proves.

Rank #4
Netgear Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router 5-Stream AX3600 Dual-Band (up to 3.45Gbps) - RAX41
  • Coverage up to 2,250 sq. ft. for up to 25 devices
  • Ultrafast AX3600 speeds up to 3.45 Gbps with WiFi 6 technology for uninterrupted streaming, HD video gaming, and web conferencing
  • NETGEAR devices come with security measures built in as well as enhanced safety features and updates designed to help protect you and your family
  • Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1 Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
  • Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1 G Ethernet ports

Including Arlo because of old hardware

Legacy manufacturing references are easy to find on older Arlo packaging and support pages. They explain provenance, not current share ownership. The formal spin-off and NETGEAR’s 2019 statement are the controlling evidence for the ownership question.

Calling Placemeter a current consumer brand

NETGEAR’s 2016 announcement describes integration into Arlo’s engineering and analytics work. It does not say that Placemeter remained a standalone NETGEAR product line.

Assuming every product with NETGEAR technology has the same owner

Hardware can use licensed components, acquired technology or contract manufacturing. Ownership of a component or manufacturing process is not the same as ownership of the retail brand printed on the box.

What the four-brand answer means for shoppers and researchers

For a shopper, the useful conclusion is portfolio-level: Orbi and Nighthawk are NETGEAR networking families, while Meural and ProSafe are NETGEAR-listed marks with different product histories and availability considerations. The brand name helps identify the intended product family, but it does not replace checking the model number, support period, regional sales channel or technical specifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a researcher, the answer should be written with the relationship attached to each name. “NETGEAR’s Orbi product line” is accurate. “NETGEAR-owned Orbi corporation” is not established by the cited material. “Arlo was spun off by NETGEAR on December 31, 2018, and NETGEAR said it no longer owned Arlo shares” is precise. “Arlo is still a NETGEAR brand because old units were manufactured by NETGEAR” is incorrect.

Bottom line on the four names

Orbi, Nighthawk, Meural and ProSafe are defensible examples of NETGEAR brands or marks. Orbi and Nighthawk are explicitly product lines; Meural and ProSafe are listed NETGEAR marks. The evidence does not establish four currently owned standalone technology companies. Arlo belongs in the history section, not in a current four-brand ownership list, because NETGEAR completed its spin-off on December 31, 2018 and subsequently reported no remaining Arlo shares.
