That signal is not a complete ranking of every food, and it does not mean all seafood is contaminated or unsafe. The practical approach is to follow local advisories for recreationally caught fish and shellfish, treat the FDA’s canned-clam finding as a narrow product-and-origin concern, and avoid calling any broad food category “PFAS-free” based on limited nondetections.
What the FDA’s data actually show
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of persistent chemicals found throughout the environment. Food can be exposed through contaminated soil, water, processing environments, packaging or other pathways, but contamination does not automatically result in a detectable level in the finished food. Uptake also differs by the specific PFAS and the type of food.

The FDA says its evidence does not yet support a definitive, universal ranking of foods by PFAS content. Its current Questions and Answers on PFAS in Food notes that individual-food sample counts remain limited and that PFAS exposure from food is still an emerging area of science.

The FDA has tested more than 1,900 food samples and says its methods cover up to 30 PFAS in various foods. Its December 19, 2025 update describes testing across bread and grains, fruits and vegetables, meat, eggs, dairy and seafood. Those totals describe what the agency sampled; they are not probabilities that every item in a category will contain PFAS at the same frequency or concentration. These figures also come from two different designs. The Total Diet Study samples foods that represent what people commonly buy and eat, while a targeted survey concentrates on a category or concern. A higher percentage in a targeted set cannot be used as a national rate for every product on a store shelf. Likewise, a low percentage in a broad set does not guarantee that a particular brand or batch is unaffected.
Why seafood is the leading concern in current monitoring
Fish and shellfish can take up contaminants from the water and sediment where they live. That environmental pathway helps explain why the FDA says seafood may be at higher risk for environmental PFAS contamination than some other food types. It does not establish that seafood from every waterway, farm, country or processor has the same exposure.
In the TDS, seafood had detections in 46 of 67 samples. The targeted 2022 survey found detections in 60 of 81 samples. Because the two programs use different sampling purposes, those percentages should not be combined into a single national seafood rate. They show a repeated FDA detection signal, not a complete ranking of all foods sold in the United States.

A bottom-feeding species, a shellfish bed and a farmed fish operation do not encounter identical water, sediment or feed. The FDA’s public results do not provide enough samples to turn those distinctions into a reliable “best” or “worst” seafood list. The useful conclusion is narrower: seafood deserves attention to location and official notices, especially when it is caught from the environment.
The FDA’s testing pages explain the analytical approach and how detected concentrations are evaluated against toxicological reference values: Testing Food for PFAS and Assessing Dietary Exposure. A laboratory detection is therefore not, by itself, a finding that eating the food is likely to cause harm.
The canned-clam finding: important, but narrowly defined
The clearest product-specific concern in the FDA’s current food information involves some imported canned clams from China tested in the 2022 seafood survey. The agency concluded that PFOA exposure from those samples was likely to be a health concern, and recalls followed. In follow-up testing of 12 samples from the two processors associated with the highest levels, PFOA was detected in all 12 samples.
That evidence supports caution about the identified imported canned-clam products and processors. It does not justify statements such as “all clams contain dangerous PFAS,” “all canned seafood is unsafe,” or “avoid all seafood.” The FDA’s analytical results page provides the agency’s product-testing information.
When discussing a recall or advisory, check the exact product name, lot or code, country of origin and processor listed by the FDA or another official authority. A category label such as “clams” is too broad to identify the affected items. If you have a recalled can, follow the notice’s instructions about disposal, refunds or contacting the seller rather than tasting it to decide whether it is acceptable.
The follow-up result—12 of 12 samples positive for at least one PFAS and PFOA in all 12—strengthens the case for acting on a named notice. It still does not tell you that every can from every processor, every harvest area or every country has the same concentration. Scope matters whenever a contamination result is reported.

Detection is not the same as a health-risk conclusion
PFAS results need two separate questions:
- Was a PFAS detected? The answer depends on the sample and the laboratory method’s detection limit.
- Does the measured exposure indicate a likely health concern? The FDA compares dietary exposure estimates with toxicological reference values and considers the amount and frequency of consumption.
Most detections in the FDA’s tested seafood samples were not considered likely health concerns under the agency’s assessment. The identified canned-clam PFOA result was the described exception. This distinction prevents two opposite errors: assuming every detection is dangerous, or assuming every nondetection proves a product is risk-free.
The FDA also says its current assessment evaluates PFAS individually and does not account for possible additive effects from chemicals that occur together. That is an acknowledged limitation, not a reason to assign an unsupported risk level to every food. The agency’s analytical and assessment details are summarized at FDA’s testing and dietary-exposure page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Concentration, portion size and how often a food is eaten all matter to an exposure estimate. A single detection in a laboratory table is not the same thing as a person’s cumulative dose. Conversely, a nondetection in one sample cannot predict results for a different brand, harvest, season or serving.
How to choose lower-exposure options in practice
1. Start with the advisory for recreationally caught fish and shellfish
If you catch fish or shellfish yourself, identify the state or tribal waterbody advisory before eating the catch. FDA specifically recommends checking state fish and shellfish consumption advisories because they can reflect local water conditions, species and contaminant measurements. The relevant source is the FDA’s consumer advice about eating fish and the applicable state health or environmental agency.
- Record the waterbody where the fish or shellfish was caught.
- Identify the species and, where an advisory specifies it, the size or life stage.
- Read the advisory’s meal-frequency instruction (for example, a serving limit, “do not eat” notice or preparation direction).
- Follow any cleaning or cooking instructions in the advisory; do not substitute a generic seafood rule for local guidance.
Local advisories are more useful for a recreational catch than a national statement that seafood is generally more likely to contain PFAS. A fish from one waterbody cannot be assigned the result of a sample from a different location.
Advisories may address contaminants other than PFAS as well. Follow the complete notice, including whether advice differs for children, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or frequent consumers. If a waterbody has no posted information, contact the responsible state, tribal or local health agency instead of assuming that no notice means no contamination.
2. For store-bought seafood, use specific official notices
Commercial seafood is not all one exposure category. Species, growing area, farming or harvesting conditions, processing and origin can differ. If an FDA alert or recall names a product, match the notice to the package details rather than discarding every product in the same broad category.
- Check the country of origin and processor when an official notice identifies either one.
- Check lot codes, dates and package descriptions against the notice.
- Do not infer that an unaffected brand, species or processor has the same result as a named product.
- When no product-specific notice exists, vary seafood choices according to ordinary dietary guidance instead of treating all seafood as equally contaminated.
The FDA’s published analytical results are the appropriate place to see what was actually sampled and detected. Retailers and manufacturers may also post recall information, but verify that it matches the official notice.
Do not rely on smell, appearance, rinsing or cooking to identify PFAS. These chemicals are not something consumers can screen for with ordinary kitchen checks, and the agency information does not establish that home processing removes PFAS already present in food.

3. Keep broad food categories in perspective
The FDA’s general-market testing found that more than 95% of 1,352 foods had no PFAS detected above the method detection limit. That result does not establish a PFAS-free list for produce, dairy, meat, eggs, grains or any other category. It does support a measured response: do not abandon an entire food group solely because PFAS can occur somewhere in the environment.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For foods without a specific advisory or product notice, practical lower-exposure choices are therefore evidence-based rather than categorical:
- Prefer foods from normal, regulated distribution channels over products subject to a current official recall or alert.
- Use variety in the diet so that exposure is not concentrated in one repeatedly eaten item.
- Follow local advisories when food is harvested from the environment.
- Pay attention to new official notices rather than relying on a permanent list of “safe” foods.
These steps reduce reliance on a single potentially affected source, but they cannot guarantee that any food is free of PFAS. Variety is a sensible way to avoid repeatedly relying on one product, not a mathematically proven method for eliminating exposure.
What the current evidence cannot tell you
There is no complete food-by-food ranking
The FDA has not established a universal order such as seafood first, dairy second, meat third and produce fourth. Sample counts for individual foods are limited, and a broad category can contain products with very different origins and processing histories. The agency’s statement is explicit: “Although it is well documented that PFAS are present throughout the environment, PFAS exposure from food is an emerging area of science and there remains much we do not yet know about which types of foods are more likely to contain PFAS.” Read the full statement in FDA’s PFAS food Q&A.
A nondetection has a technical meaning
“Not detected” means the measured amount was below the method detection limit used for that sample. It does not mean the concentration was exactly zero, that another laboratory would obtain the same limit, or that every product of the same type would have the same result. Methods also differ in which PFAS they can measure; FDA testing can cover up to 30 PFAS in various foods, but no single test captures every possible compound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSample percentages are not personal exposure estimates
The figures 46 of 67, 60 of 81 and 1,290 of 1,352 describe FDA samples. They do not predict the PFAS level in your next meal, account for your portion size or eating frequency, or represent every season, region, brand and processor. A percentage should always be read with the dataset and sampling purpose attached.
Food is only one exposure pathway
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists contaminated drinking water and environmental sources alongside food as possible PFAS exposure pathways. A food-focused change should not be interpreted as proof that diet is the only or dominant route for a particular person. EPA’s overview is available at Our Current Understanding of the Human Health and Environmental Risks of PFAS.
If your household uses a private well, lives near a known contaminated site or has a local water advisory, water and site information may be more relevant to your overall exposure than trying to identify a “lowest-PFAS” grocery list. Address those concerns through the appropriate state, tribal or federal program.
Common mistakes when trying to reduce PFAS from food
Assuming all seafood is equally affected
The FDA’s strongest detection signal is a reason to use seafood advisories and official product notices, not a blanket seafood ban. The canned-clam concern involved specific imported samples and processors.

Calling a food “PFAS-free” because one sample tested negative
One nondetection cannot establish that a category, brand, origin or future production run is PFAS-free. The method limit and the limited number of samples must stay attached to the result.
Buying a product that has not been shown to change food exposure
The available FDA and EPA information does not establish that a household water filter, cookware item, food-storage container or consumer food-test kit reliably removes PFAS already present in food or identifies lower-PFAS groceries. A water-treatment decision may address drinking-water exposure, but it does not answer which food to select.
Treating a detection as an automatic health emergency
Risk depends on the PFAS, concentration, serving pattern and toxicological assessment. Use the FDA’s assessment and any official recall or advisory rather than interpreting a laboratory detection without context.
Confusing a lack of notice with proof of safety
FDA monitoring cannot test every product continuously. No current alert means that no specific notice has been issued for that item; it does not certify that the item contains zero PFAS. The same caution applies to online lists that rank foods without identifying sample numbers, methods, dates and origins.

|---|---|---|
| Recreationally caught fish or shellfish | Check the state or tribal advisory for the exact waterbody and species before eating. | A national seafood statistic describes your catch. |
| Imported canned clams matching an FDA notice | Compare origin, processor, lot and package details; follow the recall or disposal instruction. | Every clam or canned seafood product has the same PFOA level. |
| Store-bought seafood with no specific notice | Use normal dietary variety and monitor official FDA updates. | The absence of a notice proves the product is PFAS-free. |
| Produce, dairy, meat, eggs or grains without a notice | Keep eating a varied diet; do not assign a category-wide PFAS label from limited data. | A broad category is guaranteed safe or unsafe. |
| Concern about multiple exposure routes | Consider drinking-water and local environmental information as well as food advisories. | Changing diet alone addresses every possible PFAS source. |
Frequently asked questions
Are seafood and shellfish unsafe to eat?
No blanket conclusion is supported. Seafood has the most frequent detections in the FDA’s samples, but most detections were not judged likely to be health concerns. Follow local advisories for recreational catch and specific FDA notices for commercial products.
Should I stop eating canned clams?
Check whether the can matches an FDA recall or notice by origin, processor, lot and product description. The concern involved some imported canned clams from China and identified processors, not every canned-clam product.
Does cooking remove PFAS?
The FDA information cited here does not establish that ordinary cooking removes PFAS from contaminated food. Do not use cooking, rinsing or trimming as a substitute for an official recall or advisory.
Are organic or locally grown foods lower in PFAS?
The cited FDA results do not establish a universal advantage for organic, conventional, local or imported labels. Origin and environmental conditions can matter, but there is not enough sampling to turn those labels into a dependable lower-PFAS ranking.
What does “not detected” mean on an FDA table?
It means the amount was below that test’s method detection limit. It does not prove zero PFAS, and it cannot guarantee the result for another product, batch or laboratory method.

Can a home food-test kit tell me which groceries are safer?
The FDA and EPA information does not establish that consumer food-test kits reliably identify lower-PFAS foods. Use official testing results, recalls and advisories instead.
Is drinking water more important than food?
Importance depends on the person’s circumstances. EPA identifies contaminated drinking water, environmental sources and food as possible pathways. A food decision should not be treated as a complete assessment of household exposure.
How often should I check for updates?
Check FDA recall and testing pages when you have a specific product concern, and review state or tribal advisories whenever you fish or collect shellfish. There is no permanent list that can replace current, product- and location-specific information.
Bottom line for shoppers
Seafood currently has the clearest FDA detection signal: PFAS appeared in 46 of 67 TDS seafood samples and 60 of 81 samples in a targeted 2022 survey. The evidence still does not support a complete ranking of foods or a blanket seafood avoidance rule. Use local advisories for recreational catches, follow product-specific FDA recalls and alerts—especially those naming imported canned clams from China and associated processors—and treat “not detected” as a method-limited result rather than proof of zero contamination. For other foods, variety and attention to official updates are more defensible than purchasing a product or following an unsupported “PFAS-free” list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which foods are most likely to contain PFAS?
In current FDA monitoring, seafood has the strongest detection signal. FDA detected one or more PFAS in 46 of 67 Total Diet Study seafood samples and 60 of 81 samples in a targeted 2022 seafood survey. Those samples do not establish a complete ranking of every food or predict every product.
Should I avoid all seafood?
No. The FDA results do not support a blanket seafood ban. Use state or tribal advisories for recreationally caught fish and shellfish, and follow any product-specific commercial seafood recall or alert.
What was unusual about the canned-clam finding?
Some imported canned clams from China were associated with PFOA exposure that FDA considered likely to be a health concern. In follow-up testing, all 12 samples from two processors linked to the highest levels contained PFOA. The finding does not apply automatically to every clam or canned seafood product.

No. It means the measured amount was below the method detection limit for that sample. It does not prove zero PFAS or guarantee the result for another brand, batch, origin or test method.
What is the best way to lower food-related exposure?
Check local advisories for recreational catch, match commercial products to official FDA notices by origin, processor and lot details, eat a varied diet, and monitor current government updates. No food category can be labeled universally PFAS-free from the available data.
Can filters, cookware or storage containers remove PFAS from food?
The FDA and EPA information does not establish that these products remove PFAS already present in food or identify safer groceries. Water treatment may address drinking-water exposure, which is a separate question.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Seafood is the leading FDA detection signal, but there is no complete food ranking and no reason to avoid every seafood product. Follow local fish advisories, act on exact FDA recalls—especially the narrowly defined imported canned-clam notices—and treat nondetections as method-limited results, not proof of zero PFAS.
