Choose by phone and training style, not by a universal heart-rate accuracy ranking: the Apple Watch Series 12 is the broad smartwatch pick for iPhone users, the Garmin Forerunner 970 is aimed at dedicated runners, and the COROS Pace 4 Pro is a running-focused alternative with longer listed battery life and a lower U.S. launch price than the Garmin. None of the available tests establishes one wrist watch as most accurate for every person and workout.
Which watch fits your workouts?
Apple Watch Series 12: an iPhone-centered all-rounder
Consider the Series 12 if you want fitness tracking alongside a broad Apple smartwatch experience. In a Tom’s Guide hands-on test published October 3, 2026, one reviewer compared it with a Garmin HRM 600 chest strap across more than 100 running miles, two strength workouts, a bodyweight HIIT session, and an indoor bike ride. The reviewer described most running readings as very accurate but noted short periods at the start of runs when the watch withheld a heart-rate reading. That is useful activity-specific experience, not a guarantee for every wearer or workout. Read the Series 12 test.

Garmin Forerunner 970: a dedicated-running candidate
The Forerunner 970 belongs on a runner’s shortlist when running data and training are the priority. A separate Tom’s Guide comparison tested it against the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and a Garmin HRM 600 chest strap during one 13.1-mile half marathon. In that race, the Garmin’s heart-rate readings stayed closer to the strap overall, although the reviewer noted a start-up delay and erroneous dips. This is one tester’s result with the Forerunner 970; it does not establish a universal accuracy advantage or transfer to other Garmin or Apple models. Read the half-marathon comparison.

COROS Pace 4 Pro: a running-focused alternative
The Pace 4 Pro is worth considering if you want a running-oriented watch and value the listed battery life and launch pricing. Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 review says chest-strap comparisons were generally close during runs and rides, with more heart-rate errors during strength workouts. The review describes short hands-on testing and listed specifications, not a controlled study across many participants. Check current availability and price before buying. Read the Pace 4 Pro review.

What the available tests say—and what they do not
Wrist watches use optical sensing to estimate pulse; a chest strap such as the Garmin HRM 600 measures electrical signals from the heart. These are different measurement approaches, and optical readings can be affected by movement and workout conditions. A 2017 peer-reviewed study found that agreement for the older optical monitors it tested varied by aerobic exercise, with the highest agreement on a treadmill and the lowest on an elliptical. Because it studied older devices, it supports caution about activity-dependent readings, not a ranking of today’s watches. See the 2017 study in the Journal of Personalized Medicine.
The results below illustrate why one race or one workout should not be treated as a general accuracy score. The March 25, 2026 Tom’s Guide half-marathon test compared the Forerunner 970 and Apple Watch Ultra 3—not the Series 12—with a Garmin HRM 600 reference:

- Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
- Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
- Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
- Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more
- On the 13.1-mile course, the Forerunner 970 recorded 13.15 miles and the Ultra 3 recorded 13.22 miles. The reviewer described both GPS tracks as close to the course and Garmin’s distance as nearer the official distance.
- Average heart rate was 158 beats per minute on the strap, 156 on Garmin, and 172 on Apple. Maximum heart rate was 174 on the strap, 172 on Garmin, and 203 on Apple.
- The reviewer said the Ultra 3 often read too high or could not read heart rate, while Garmin stayed close overall but had some start-up delay and erroneous dips.
All of those figures describe one runner on one course; they are not predictions of your watch’s GPS or heart-rate performance. The Ultra 3 comparison also should not be used to infer how the Series 12 performed: that was a separate test with different workouts and conditions.

How to choose for heart-rate tracking
- Match the watch to your phone and everyday needs. The Series 12 is the all-rounder in this shortlist for an iPhone-centered smartwatch. The two COROS and Garmin models are presented here as running-focused choices.
- Match the evidence to your workout. Running results do not automatically predict strength-session results. The Pace 4 Pro review reported more heart-rate errors in strength workouts than in running and cycling; the Series 12 test reported brief missing readings at the start of some runs.
- Use a chest strap if workout heart-rate response is a priority. It can serve as a training accessory or a comparison reference, but check compatibility with the specific watch and app before purchasing. A strap reference in an individual review does not prove that every watch-and-strap combination will work.
- Check your exact route and needs. The half-marathon GPS numbers are from one course, so they do not establish which watch will record every route most closely.
- Recheck current availability and pricing. The cited COROS prices are launch figures reported in September 2026, not guaranteed current prices.
