If FINAL FANTASY XIV text, chat, HUD elements or the mouse pointer is difficult to read, start with the game’s own configuration menus. Use System Configuration for display and accessibility controls, Character Configuration for UI and log-window text, and HUD Layout to enlarge individual elements. Cursor sizing, mouse-sonar, gamepad window zoom and visual alerts solve different visibility problems without forcing every part of the interface to become larger.
Menu names and platform support can differ between the current Windows, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 clients. The steps below identify where Square Enix documents each control and note when a value comes from an older patch note rather than a promise that every current client shows the same option.

Start with the setting that matches what you cannot see
“Make the FFXIV UI bigger” can mean several different things. Global UI scaling changes most interface elements; HUD editing enlarges only selected widgets; log-window controls target chat; cursor tools make the pointer easier to locate; and window zoom magnifies one gamepad-selected window. Choosing the narrowest control avoids a huge HUD when only chat or a single panel is a problem.

How to enlarge the overall interface
Open Display Settings
- Open the main menu and choose the System tab.
- Select System Configuration, then open Display Settings. Square Enix’s configuration manual places display and accessibility controls in this area.
- Look for the current client’s UI-size or high-resolution interface choices. Apply a larger setting, confirm, and inspect a normal combat scene, inventory, map and duty window.
Patch 3.2 (2016) documented high-resolution UI choices of 150% and 200% for suitable display resolutions. Those figures describe that patch’s Windows and Mac feature set; the current client may present different labels, additional percentages or platform-specific limits. A larger global scale can improve nearly every menu at once, but it also consumes more screen space and may cause HUD panels to overlap. If that happens, use the HUD editor rather than immediately dropping the global scale.

Resize only the HUD elements you need
Open HUD Layout from the System menu and select the element that is difficult to read, such as the party list, chat log, duty gauge, target information or hotbar. Patch 4.1 (2017) documented per-element sizes of 160%, 180% and 200%. In a current client, choose the element’s size control if those values or equivalent choices are shown, then drag the element to a clear position.
- Enlarge high-value information first: party health, target cast bars, duty objectives and the chat log.
- Move or hide low-priority widgets before enlarging everything; this preserves space for the information you actually read during play.
- Test the layout in both a quiet town and an ordinary duty. A panel that fits while idle may cover a cast bar or hotbar during combat.
Global display scaling and HUD-element sizing are separate. You can use a moderate overall scale and make one critical element 200%, or keep the global setting large and reduce an element that becomes intrusive.
Make chat and menu text easier to read
Increase the chat prompt and log text
- Open Character Configuration from the Character tab.
- Choose Log Window Settings and inspect the font or prompt-size controls available in your client.
- Set the chat prompt and log presentation to a readable value, then send a test message and read a busy channel before finalizing the layout.
Square Enix’s Patch 3.2 notes (2016) listed Chat Prompt Font Size values of 24, 30 and 36 for Windows and Mac. These are documented setting values, not measurements of reading improvement, and they may not be exposed identically on consoles. If your client uses a different label, choose the largest readable prompt rather than assuming the historical numbers must appear.

Use NQ/HQ and help-text rendering options
Patch 3.4 (2016) documented a toggle between NQ and HQ text and a separate help-text toggle, with controller bindings for changing the options. These controls affect how text is rendered, not the physical size of every UI element. In Log Window Settings or the relevant text options, enable the higher-quality or clearer rendering choice when available, and turn on help text if tooltips or explanatory labels are what you are missing. Exact placement and binding names can change in later clients.
Understand high-resolution fonts and assets
Patch 5.5 (2021) reported increased font resolution for certain menus, nameplates, fly text and pop-up text. The nameplate, fly-text and pop-up improvements were not available with DirectX 9. The same patch described high-resolution UI assets for Windows and Mac and required a restart after changing that setting. If your Windows or Mac client offers a high-resolution UI switch, save your settings and restart the game as requested; otherwise, do not assume that an older patch’s control is present on your platform.
Make the cursor easier to see
Choose a larger pointer
Patch 2.5 (2015) documented Mouse Cursor Size choices of Normal, Large and Maximum for Windows and PlayStation 4. Look for that control in the system input or mouse settings of your current client. A larger pointer is useful when the text itself is readable but you cannot find the pointer over a crowded scene. It does not enlarge chat, menus or HUD labels.

Use tracking and mouse sonar
The same Patch 2.5 notes added mouse sonar, which indicates the cursor’s current on-screen position and can be assigned to a key, along with cursor tracking. If your client exposes these options, assign the sonar action to a key you can press without leaving combat controls. Use it when the pointer disappears against a bright background, during a cutscene, or after moving between multiple monitors. Because sonar and tracking identify location rather than changing text, they complement rather than replace UI scaling.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Magnify a single window with a gamepad
Patch 3.5 (2017) documented gamepad window zoom by holding R3 (pressing the right stick). With a controller, open the small window you need to inspect, hold R3, and read the enlarged view; release the stick to return to normal. This is a temporary inspection tool, not a global font-size setting. It is especially useful for a tooltip, item description or confirmation panel that is otherwise legible only after leaning toward the screen. The documented binding is for the gamepad control scheme, so keyboard-and-mouse players should use display, HUD or log-window scaling instead.
Turn on visual alerts when your client supports them
Patch 2.38 (2014) documented Visual Alerts under System Configuration for the Windows version, including an enable switch, size and transparency settings. In a current client, check System Configuration > Accessibility Settings for a visual-alert section. Enable it, choose a size that is noticeable without covering the battlefield, and adjust transparency so the alert remains visible over game action.

The historical note is explicitly Windows-specific. Do not assume that PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2 clients expose the same controls, and do not treat the old patch wording as a guarantee of identical labels today. If no visual-alert option appears, rely on the HUD, text and cursor controls available on your platform.
A practical setup sequence for readable play
- Identify the bottleneck. Decide whether the difficulty is global UI scale, one HUD element, chat, pointer location, one controller window or missing visual cues.
- Set a moderate global scale. In System Configuration > Display Settings, choose the largest comfortable interface option. Check inventory, map and duty windows before changing anything else.
- Refine the HUD. Open HUD Layout, enlarge only the party list, cast bars, chat or other information you routinely miss, and move overlapping panels.
- Fix text rendering. In Character Configuration > Log Window Settings, adjust chat prompt size and use NQ/HQ or help-text options when those controls are available.
- Improve pointer visibility. Select Large or Maximum cursor size where supported; add tracking or mouse sonar if locating the pointer is still difficult.
- Check one-window zoom. Controller users can hold R3 to inspect small windows without committing to a larger global layout.
- Add alerts. On supported Windows clients, configure Visual Alerts under Accessibility Settings and test them during ordinary play.
- Restart when required. High-resolution UI asset changes documented in Patch 5.5 require a restart on the affected Windows or Mac client.
- Test in context. Read chat, a tooltip, a party list and a duty objective while moving the camera and using your normal input device. A setting is successful only if it remains readable during play, not just in a quiet menu.
Platform, version and backup limits
The current Configuration Settings manual distinguishes settings that can be backed up from environment-dependent choices. Server backup can preserve Accessibility Settings and transfer supported data among Windows, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Mac, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 versions. Display resolution, graphics quality, input device and other settings tied to the local environment are not exportable. Launcher backup and server backup are separate features, so confirm which one you are using before changing devices.

Troubleshooting common readability problems
The enlarged HUD overlaps or runs off-screen
Return to HUD Layout, reduce only the element that causes the collision, and move secondary panels away from the edge. If many elements overlap, lower the global scale one step and enlarge only the critical widgets individually.
The text is still fuzzy after increasing its size
Check whether a high-resolution UI option is available for your platform and whether the client requires a restart. On Windows, Patch 5.5 specifically excluded some nameplate, fly-text and pop-up improvements when using DirectX 9, so changing size alone may not change their rendering quality.
The cursor is large but still disappears
Use cursor tracking or mouse sonar if offered, and assign sonar to an easy-to-reach key. A larger pointer cannot remain visible against every background; a location signal is the more reliable fix in busy scenes.

Windows launcher text suddenly looks wrong
Square Enix reported a Windows launcher display issue related to text-size and high-DPI settings after Patch 7.21 and said a launcher update addressed it on April 28, 2025. That notice concerned the launcher, not a general recommendation to change Windows-wide text size; those operating-system settings affect all PC text. Update the launcher and use the game’s own UI controls before altering system-wide scaling.
A setting is missing on console
Check the platform qualifier in the relevant feature documentation. Visual Alerts were documented for Windows, Chat Prompt Font Size for Windows and Mac, and cursor size and sonar for Windows and PlayStation 4. A missing control may therefore be a platform limitation rather than a faulty installation.
Which combination works best?
| Goal | Recommended combination | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Everything is too small | Moderate global Display Settings scale plus targeted HUD sizes | More readable interface, but less room for simultaneous panels |
| Chat is the main problem | Log Window Settings, larger chat prompt and appropriate text-rendering toggles | Chat occupies more screen space |
| You lose controls rather than text | Large or Maximum cursor, tracking and mouse sonar | Pointer aids do not enlarge other content |
| You use a controller and inspect small panels | Normal layout plus R3 window zoom | Zoom is temporary and applies to one window |
| You need stronger event cues on Windows | Accessibility Settings with Visual Alerts, where available | Platform support and current labels may differ |
The most flexible approach is usually a moderate global scale, larger sizes for the few HUD elements that carry essential information, a readable chat prompt, and cursor aids if pointer location is the real obstacle. Keep platform and client version in mind: Square Enix’s patch notes document when controls were introduced, while the current configuration manual is the authoritative place to verify what your installation offers.
