For basic CD and DVD reading or burning, choose a drive that matches your computer’s port and the disc formats you use. If you also need Blu-ray or BDXL, select a model that explicitly supports those formats. The available product evidence supports six options—not a verified ranking of nine 2026 best buys—so the choices below are presented by use case rather than as a nine-place list.
Start with the discs and task you need
“External CD/DVD drive” can mean a reader, a burner, or a drive that also handles Blu-ray. Check the specification for the exact task: a drive that reads a format does not necessarily write it, and a CD/DVD writer is not automatically a Blu-ray drive.

How to choose between them
If you only need CDs and DVDs
Compare the 98938 and 43886 by connector, box contents, and computer compatibility. The 98938 is USB-powered and has documented write speeds and warranty terms. The 43886 is a slim USB-C model whose listed package includes a USB-C cable and an adapter for USB-A ports. Check that the listed system requirements match your computer; the 43886 page specifically describes Intel Mac requirements, not every Mac configuration.

If you need Blu-ray or BDXL
The 71094 manufacturer page explicitly lists Blu-ray and BDXL support, including discs up to 100GB. Its “While stock lasts” notice makes availability a material part of the choice. The 43888 appears as a premium Blu-ray option in Laptop Mag’s 2025 article, but verify the exact model and current specifications before relying on that listing.
If archival media matters
M-DISC readiness is listed for the 98938, the 43886, and the editorially reported ASUS and LG models. Confirm that the drive supports the particular M-DISC format you intend to use, and buy compatible blank media. M-DISC support alone does not establish how long a specific archive will last; the cited manufacturer page gives no numeric lifetime.

Check compatibility beyond the drive itself
There are three separate questions: will the computer connect to the drive, can the drive handle the disc format, and is software available for the task? A USB connection and an operating-system listing address only part of that chain.

- Connector and power: Match the drive’s port to a free port on your computer. The cited slimline models are USB-powered; the 43886 includes a USB-C cable and USB-A adapter. Verify package contents for the exact regional listing.
- Operating system: Use the manufacturer’s system requirements for the specific model and region. For the ASUS and LG options here, the cited operating-system details come from Laptop Mag’s November 2025 article, not a current manufacturer page.
- Burning software: The 98938 and 43886 bundle Nero software for Windows only, according to Verbatim. Do not assume bundled software is available for every operating system.
- Movie software: The 98938 and 71094 pages say movie playback software is not included. Laptop Mag also says separate software is needed for Blu-ray playback on the 43888. Check software compatibility and licensing separately from the drive.
What this list can—and cannot—establish
Laptop Mag’s cited recommendations were published on 28 November 2025, and the Verbatim manufacturer pages document product specifications rather than comparative performance. The evidence here does not support calling nine models the best external CD/DVD drives to buy in 2026, nor does it substantiate hands-on testing. Treat editorial awards as dated recommendations, not guarantees of current stock or compatibility; manufacturer specifications are useful for checking supported formats and features.
