Which ergonomic keyboard settings should you change first?

Change height and reach first, then adjust tilt to keep your wrists neutral. Set the chair and work surface so your shoulders can relax, your elbows stay close to your sides, and the keyboard is roughly at elbow height. Center it directly in front of you and close enough that you do not lean forward. Only after those adjustments should you fine-tune the keyboard’s tilt. If the desk cannot accommodate that position, use an adjustable tray; consider a compact or split keyboard only when the basic setup still does not fit your body or tasks.

What “ergonomic” should feel like

The useful target is a neutral working posture rather than a particular product, angle or keyboard layout. OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance states: “Your wrists should be straight and in-line with your forearms.” Your shoulders should remain relaxed, elbows should stay near your body, and your forearms should be approximately parallel with the floor. The keyboard should not force you to reach, lean or bend your wrists upward or sideways.

There is no universal keyboard angle or universally best design. The right setting is the one that lets you maintain that alignment comfortably while you type, use shortcuts and move to the mouse. OSHA and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) both emphasize fitting the workstation to the user, not fitting every user to one preset. See OSHA’s keyboard guidance and CCOHS’s page, revised September 17, 2026, on keyboard selection and use.

Change settings in this order

  1. Fit the chair and work surface. Start with your sitting height and the desk or keyboard surface so the keyboard can sit near elbow height without lifting your shoulders.
  2. Set distance and centering. Put the keyboard directly in front of you and close enough that your elbows remain near your sides.
  3. Adjust tilt for straight wrists. Raise or lower the front or back only as needed to keep your wrists aligned with your forearms.
  4. Reconsider the keyboard design. If the first three steps still require reaching or awkward hand positions, test a shorter, split or tented layout.
  5. Add palm support only if it helps. Use a rest as part of the complete setup, never as a substitute for correcting height, distance or tilt.

1. Set height and overall posture

Match the keyboard to your elbows

Adjust the chair and work surface together. With your shoulders relaxed and your upper arms hanging near your sides, position the keyboard so your elbows are about the same height as it. This avoids lifting the shoulders or reaching downward for the keys. Keep your forearms approximately parallel with the floor rather than forcing them sharply upward or downward.

If the desk is fixed and too high, lowering the chair alone may leave your knees or feet in an unsuitable position while the keyboard remains elevated. In that situation, an adjustable keyboard tray is the practical intervention. OSHA recommends a tray that changes in height and tilt and leaves clearance for your legs and feet. The tray should support the keyboard at the position your body requires; it should not simply create another fixed surface at a different height.

Check the whole workstation, not just the keyboard

A keyboard cannot correct every mismatch between a desk, chair and monitor. Before changing key layout or buying accessories, sit in your normal working position and observe whether your shoulders creep upward, your elbows drift away from your body or you lean toward the desk. Correct the furniture relationship first, then reassess the keyboard.

2. Set distance and centering

Center the keyboard on your body

Place the keyboard directly in front of you rather than offset toward the mouse or a monitor. Your main typing area should line up with your torso so neither arm has to angle across your body for ordinary keys. Bring the keyboard close enough that your elbows remain near your sides and you do not have to reach with your shoulders or lean forward.

Distance and height interact. A keyboard that is at the right elevation but too far away still encourages forward lean; one that is close but too high can make you raise your shoulders. Make the adjustment while sitting in your usual chair, not while standing or reaching from the edge of the seat.

Use the mouse as a spacing test

After centering the keyboard, place the mouse beside it in the position you use most. If the keyboard’s footprint pushes the mouse far away, you may compensate by abducting your arm or twisting your torso. A shorter keyboard can create room for a closer mouse position by removing rarely used sections, but only choose one if its key arrangement still supports your work.

3. Adjust tilt only for neutral wrists

Find your individual neutral position

Use the keyboard’s feet or tray tilt to keep the backs of your hands in line with your forearms. OSHA advises raising or lowering the keyboard as needed for neutral wrists and warns against using the feet when they increase wrist bend. CCOHS likewise notes that some users may need to elevate the back, while others may need to elevate the front. Neither organization specifies one correct angle for everyone.

Type normally for several minutes after each small change. Look for a straight line from forearm through wrist to the back of the hand. If the wrist bends upward, reduce the elevation that causes that bend; if it bends downward or your fingers reach awkwardly, try the opposite adjustment. Do not select a dramatic negative or positive angle simply because it is marketed as ergonomic.

Do not use tilt to compensate for a high desk

A steep tilt can make a too-high keyboard feel temporarily closer, but it may increase wrist extension or require more finger force. Return to the height and distance steps if you cannot obtain a neutral line with a modest tilt. The goal is alignment, not a particular visual slope.

4. Decide whether a different keyboard shape is warranted

Alternative designs are options to try when the basic workstation adjustments do not fit your body or tasks. OSHA says such designs may help maintain neutral wrist postures, but available evidence does not conclusively establish that they prevent discomfort or injury. Choose based on observed fit and usable key action rather than a promise of protection.

Option When it may help What to verify Limitation
Short or compact keyboard Overreaching or a mouse that sits too far away because of a large footprint Elbows stay near the body, the mouse can remain close, and required keys are easy to access Removing or relocating keys may slow work or create new reaching patterns
Split keyboard Each hand needs a different position or a straight board makes the forearms angle inward Both halves can be placed so wrists and forearms stay straight; the separation remains comfortable during ordinary typing It requires adaptation and is not established as an injury-prevention treatment
Tented design A user wants a more neutral arm or wrist orientation than a flat board provides Shoulders remain relaxed and the raised center does not make the wrists bend or increase key force A tent angle that is too high can create a new strain or reduce control
Standard full-size keyboard The existing layout already permits close elbows, a nearby mouse and straight wrists Number pad and other sections do not force the mouse or keyboard away from the body Its width may be unsuitable for a small desk or short reach

CCOHS lists compact, split and tented approaches as designs to consider for individual fit. There is no single best keyboard for every user, so test the position you can maintain during your actual typing, not just at a showroom or for a few seconds.

5. Use a palm rest correctly, if at all

A palm rest is optional. OSHA’s wrist and palm support guidance says your hands should move freely above the support while typing. When you pause and rest, the pad should contact the heel of the palm rather than pinning the wrist. A support that immobilizes the wrist or makes you bend over its edge is working against the intended posture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Position the rest so it does not push the keyboard farther away or raise it above the height your elbows require. If adding a pad means your shoulders lift, your wrists bend or your reach increases, remove it and correct the workstation instead. The support is a comfort aid within a coordinated setup, not a replacement for chair, desk, distance or tilt adjustments.

A practical adjustment procedure

  1. Clear the surface. Remove objects that prevent the keyboard from sitting directly in front of you and leave enough room for your normal mouse position.
  2. Set your chair. Sit in the posture you use for real work. Relax your shoulders and let your elbows hang near your sides.
  3. Place the keyboard. Set it near elbow height, centered on your torso and close enough that you do not lean forward.
  4. Check forearms and wrists. Aim for forearms approximately parallel with the floor and wrists straight in line with them.
  5. Change tilt in small increments. Use the keyboard feet or tray only to preserve that alignment. If a foot creates more wrist bend, fold it away.
  6. Test ordinary tasks. Type a representative passage, use your normal shortcuts and move the mouse. Watch for shoulder elevation, elbow flare, reaching or sideways wrist bends.
  7. Resolve the remaining mismatch. If the desk is still too high, use an adjustable tray. If the board remains too wide or hand positions remain awkward, test a compact, split or tented design.
  8. Add support last. Try a palm rest only if your hands can still move freely above it and your neutral posture is unchanged.

How to compare two keyboards

When deciding between layouts, evaluate them in the same workstation position and compare the following four criteria:

  • Wrist alignment: Can both wrists stay straight rather than bent upward or sideways during normal typing?
  • Shoulder and elbow position: Do your shoulders remain relaxed and elbows stay near your body?
  • Footprint: Does the keyboard leave enough room to keep the mouse close without reaching?
  • Key action: Can you press the keys comfortably without excessive force or accidental repeats?

These criteria reflect the positioning and selection considerations in OSHA and CCOHS guidance. A design that improves one criterion but worsens another is not automatically an improvement; adjust the complete setup and judge the posture you can sustain.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Your shoulders are raised

The keyboard or work surface is probably too high, or the chair is too low relative to it. Revisit the height relationship before changing the keyboard angle. If the desk cannot move, an adjustable tray can lower the keyboard while preserving leg and foot clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You lean toward the screen while typing

Bring the keyboard closer and center it. A distant keyboard makes you reach even when its height is correct. Recheck that the mouse and frequently used keys remain within a comfortable reach.

Your wrists bend upward when the feet are extended

Fold the feet down and reassess. OSHA specifically cautions against using them when they increase wrist bend. If the wrist is still not neutral, change the tray or surface height rather than forcing a steeper tilt.

Your mouse is too far away

Move the keyboard and mouse together first. If the keyboard is physically too wide to allow a close mouse position, a compact layout may solve the footprint problem, provided its key arrangement suits your work.

A palm rest feels like a hard ledge

Stop using it during active typing or reposition it so only the palm heel contacts it during pauses. Your hands should move freely above the support; the pad should not pin the wrist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A split or tented board feels unfamiliar

Give yourself time to learn the layout while checking posture. Familiarity alone is not proof of fit, and novelty alone is not a reason to reject it. Keep the configuration only if it lets you maintain relaxed shoulders, close elbows and straight wrists during real tasks.

What to remember

Start with the furniture relationship and keyboard reach, then tune tilt for wrist alignment. Use a tray when a fixed desk prevents a suitable height. Treat compact, split and tented keyboards as individual-fit choices rather than guaranteed protection, and add a palm rest only when it allows free hand movement. The setup is successful when your posture remains neutral during the work you actually do.
