There is no single electric mower that is best for every lawn. The 2026 editorial picks below point to different needs: an all-around residential mower, a value option, a push mower, and choices for specific battery-tool platforms. The five-model specifications and prices come from The Gadgeteer’s May 2026 comparison; Popular Mechanics’ September 18, 2026 recommendations offer a separate use-case cross-check. These are attributed editorial picks, not results from one shared head-to-head test.
Five electric mowers to consider in 2026
The table reflects configurations and listing prices reported by The Gadgeteer in May 2026. Prices are historical snapshots, not current quotes; verify stock, included batteries and charger, and regional availability before buying. Runtime figures are manufacturer or listing claims reported by the outlet, not independently comparable test results.

Popular Mechanics’ September 2026 list names the EGO Power+ 56V 21-inch Select Cut XP as best overall, the Ryobi 40V HP 21-inch as best value, the Greenworks 80V 22-inch self-propelled as best gas-mower replacement, the Greenworks 40V 16-inch for yards under 0.15 acres, and the Echo 56V 21-inch push mower for thick grass. Those are distinct recommendations by use case; they do not verify every configuration in The Gadgeteer’s five-model comparison.
How to choose for your yard
Estimate the grass you actually mow
Use the mowable lawn area, not the full property size: a house, driveway, paths, beds, and other non-grass areas reduce the work. Runtime and acreage depend on grass height and density, terrain, mowing pace, and mower configuration, so treat published maximums as estimates rather than guarantees. Honda’s guidance for specified residential models estimates about 30 minutes and roughly ¼ acre from an 8Ah battery, or about 45 minutes and 0.37 acres from a 12Ah battery. Those figures apply to the models Honda cites, not to all battery mowers. See Honda’s lawn mower guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- [16" LAWN MOWER] - This 40V lawn mower cuts up to 1/3 acre with fully charged 4.0Ah battery (varies based on grass condition and operator technique)
- [ULTRA LIGHTWEIGHT] - 35% lighter than steel deck mowers
- [SINGLE LEVER HEIGHT ADJUST] - 5 position height adjustment
- [2-IN-1 SYSTEM] - Mulch and rear bagging

Compare the full battery kit, not voltage alone
Check how many batteries are included, their amp-hour capacity, whether a charger is in the box, and whether the mower has a second battery bay. A battery you already own may make a platform-compatible mower more attractive, but verify compatibility by exact model and battery family. Voltage by itself does not establish runtime or cutting performance.
Balance deck width with maneuverability
A wider deck can reduce the number of passes, while a narrower mower may be easier to steer around obstacles and store. Popular Mechanics says many electric walk-behind mowers use 20–22-inch decks, while models it describes span 14–30 inches. Choose for the shape of the lawn and storage space as well as area.

- ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: No gas or batteries needed to power the mower
- CUSTOMIZE YOUR CUT: Effortlessly change the height of your cut with 5 cutting positions varying between 1.4-inches and 3-inches

Check drive and grass-disposal features
Push mowers require you to supply the forward motion; self-propelled models assist with it, which can matter on slopes or over a larger area. Confirm that the exact model supports the way you mow—mulching, bagging, or side discharge—and check bag capacity and cutting-height adjustment if those matter to you. Features vary between models, even within one manufacturer’s range.

Before choosing, confirm whether that exact mower supports vertical or folded storage, review the mower and battery warranty terms, and identify local service options. Do not assume that a feature or warranty on one model applies across a brand’s full lineup.
Rank #3

- TOUCH DRIVE SELF-PROPELLED TECHNOLOGY: The EGO 800 Series lawn mower is a self propelled electric lawn mower. Use the pressure of your palm to engage the self-propel system, and control the variable speed with a dial positioned at your fingertips.
- SELECT CUT MULTI-BLADE CUTTING SYSTEM: Customize your cut with interchangeable lower blades; the battery powered mower includes mulching, high-lift bagging, and extended runtime lower blades, plus an upper blade.
- MOW AT YOUR PACE: The EGO self propelled lawn mower lets you adjust your speed between 0.9 and 3.1 miles per hour.
Which pick fits which buyer?
- Want a broad residential all-around candidate? Start with the EGO LM2156SP’s 21-inch deck and self-propelled drive, then compare its battery kit and price with alternatives available locally.
- Want a lower listed entry price or already own compatible tools? The Ryobi RY40HPLM07K is the value-oriented option in the May comparison. Its reported runtime varies with load, so match it to your lawn conditions rather than assuming a fixed acreage.
- Prefer a push mower? The Greenworks Pro 80V LM2138 is the push model among the five listed. If thick grass is the main concern, Popular Mechanics separately recommends an Echo 56V 21-inch push mower for that use case.
- Already own batteries in a particular tool ecosystem? Consider the Milwaukee or DeWalt candidates only after checking exact battery compatibility, kit contents, and current price. The DeWalt price reported in May is sufficiently unusual to verify directly before treating it as a realistic offer.
What “top-rated” means here
The recommendations come from two publishers using different editorial lists and categories. They are not a universal rating or a single standardized test ranking. The five configurations and May prices are attributed to The Gadgeteer; the use-case awards are from Popular Mechanics. Use them as a shortlist, then check the manufacturer’s exact model details and a current local listing before purchase.
