Which Dolby Atmos Settings Should You Change on Your TV and Soundbar?

For Dolby Atmos to reach a soundbar, the connection, TV audio output, source-device settings, and content all need to support the same audio path. Connect the TV’s labeled ARC or eARC HDMI port to the soundbar’s matching port, enable the TV’s external audio/ARC setting if required, and use a supported passthrough or bitstream mode rather than forcing stereo PCM. Prefer eARC when both devices support it. Then play a title known to offer Atmos and check the soundbar’s display or indicator.

Menu names differ by manufacturer and model; there is no single correct TV setting path for every system.

Which Dolby Atmos settings should you change on your TV and soundbar?

Start with the signal path, then adjust the settings that affect it. Dolby’s setup guidance recommends a single HDMI connection from the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the corresponding soundbar port. Choose the TV’s external HDMI audio system or soundbar as the output, enable ARC/eARC if the device requires it, and select a supported Auto, passthrough, or bitstream option when available. The exact labels and behavior depend on the TV and soundbar capabilities (Dolby’s HDMI connection guidance; Dolby Professional Support).

  • TV audio output: Choose the external audio system/soundbar and an output mode that passes a supported Atmos format.
  • ARC/eARC: Enable the port connection. Use eARC when both devices support it, particularly for Dolby MAT sources.
  • External player: Set HDMI audio output to bitstream when available. For Blu-ray, disable secondary-audio mixing if it interferes with the primary Atmos soundtrack.
  • Soundbar: Use its HDMI ARC/eARC input for TV audio, or connect an external source to the soundbar’s HDMI input when that route meets your video and audio needs.

Do not assume PCM is always wrong: output options and conversion behavior vary by device. The key is to avoid a setting that downmixes the source to stereo or otherwise prevents the soundbar from receiving an Atmos-capable signal.

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Why the connection type matters

ARC and eARC do not carry every audio format in the same circumstances. Dolby’s professional guidance says a Dolby MAT source routed through a TV requires supported TV transcoding or eARC passthrough; ARC alone is not sufficient for Dolby MAT passthrough. Where eARC is unavailable, TVs commonly send Dolby Digital Plus over ARC instead, subject to the particular devices’ support (Dolby Professional Support).

Connection route When it fits What to check
TV ARC/eARC to soundbar TV apps and devices plugged into the TV Both devices support the required format over that interface. Dolby MAT passthrough requires supported eARC or TV transcoding.
Source to soundbar, soundbar to TV An external streamer, disc player, or console when the soundbar has HDMI input and output Confirm the soundbar supports the source’s audio and passes the TV’s required video formats.
Optical or another non-HDMI link Only when the specific devices support the format and connection Do not assume it carries Atmos; check the TV and soundbar manuals. Dolby’s setup guidance centers HDMI for this connection.

When choosing between the TV and soundbar routes, account for where the source is connected, the Atmos transport format it outputs, the available HDMI ports, and video passthrough needs. Dolby advises checking compatibility with the device manufacturers (Dolby connection guidance).

Set up an external player or Blu-ray source

Streaming box, console, or other HDMI source

If the device connects to the TV, the TV must be able to pass its Atmos format to the soundbar. For a Dolby MAT source, ARC by itself will not provide Dolby MAT passthrough; use supported eARC passthrough, supported TV transcoding, or a compatible direct-to-soundbar connection. The direct route is useful only if the soundbar accepts that source and passes the required video format to the TV (Dolby Professional Support).

Blu-ray player

Use HDMI audio bitstream output if the player offers it. If the player mixes secondary audio—such as commentary or menu sounds—with the primary soundtrack, that mix can prevent Atmos decoding. Turn secondary-audio mixing off when necessary to preserve the primary Atmos track. Dolby’s Sound Bar Setup Guide also specifies HDMI bitstream output for a Blu-ray player.

Confirm the title and service actually provide Atmos

A compatible TV or soundbar does not guarantee Atmos playback. The selected title, streaming service, subscription tier, playback device, and device settings all matter. Check that the specific program or movie carries an Atmos label and meets the service’s device and subscription requirements; Dolby’s home-entertainment FAQs outline these compatibility checks.

Verify what the soundbar is decoding

Start known Atmos content and look for an Atmos label on the soundbar’s display or an Atmos indicator light. That is a more useful check than relying only on a TV setting being enabled: Dolby says the indicator can show that the soundbar is receiving and decoding Atmos (Dolby Sound Bar Setup Guide).

Troubleshoot when Atmos does not appear

  1. Check the content: Confirm that the exact title, service, subscription, and playback device support Atmos.
  2. Check the HDMI ports: Connect the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s matching port, or use a compatible source-to-soundbar route.
  3. Check TV output: Select the external audio system, enable ARC/eARC if needed, and choose a supported Auto, passthrough, or bitstream mode. Do not force stereo PCM when the goal is Atmos passthrough.
  4. Check the source: Set an external player to bitstream where appropriate. On Blu-ray, disable secondary-audio mixing if it is combining audio with the main track.
  5. Match the format to the link: If the source uses Dolby MAT and the TV-to-soundbar connection is ARC, use supported eARC passthrough, TV transcoding, or a compatible direct-to-soundbar route.
  6. Check the cable and specifications: Verify that the existing HDMI cable and both devices support the connection you are using before replacing anything. Follow the manufacturers’ cable and port guidance.

If the soundbar still does not show Atmos, consult the manuals for the exact TV, soundbar, and source model: available formats, settings, and menu labels vary, and the devices must support the chosen route.
