Which Controller Settings Help With Precise Parrying? A For Honor Deadzone Guide

The controller setting with the clearest documented connection to precise parrying is For Honor’s right-stick guard-mode switch deadzone. Lowering it makes directional guard changes register more readily, but setting it too low can make the intended direction less accurate. Tune it gradually, then verify each change in Training Arena or Trials. This affects how your input is recognized; it does not enlarge the game’s parry window.

Because the question does not name a game, the specific setting below is a For Honor example. Other games may use a face button, a trigger, a different stick behavior, or no relevant deadzone control at all.

What a controller setting can—and cannot—change

A deadzone is the amount of stick movement the game ignores before registering an input. For a directional guard system, that threshold determines how quickly a guard switch is recognized after you move the stick. Lowering the threshold can help when your guard direction feels late to register. It cannot make an attack’s animation slower, move the parry input window, or turn an unsuccessful reaction into a guaranteed parry.

That distinction matters. A player can lose a parry because the wrong direction was selected, because the stick movement was not recognized soon enough, or because the button or stick was pressed outside the attack’s timing window. A guard deadzone addresses only the first part of that chain: recognition of the directional input.

The For Honor setting that directly affects guard input

Right-stick guard-mode switch deadzone

Ubisoft made the right-stick guard-mode switch deadzone configurable in For Honor version 1.07. In developer comments attached to the patch notes published May 11, 2017, Ubisoft identified 10 as the default value and explained the trade-off:

“The default value is 10, decreasing it will make the guard switch more sensitive. Choosing too low values could potentially result in less accuracy when selecting a guard direction.”

The patch-note figure is a setting reference, not a performance statistic. Ubisoft did not publish a success-rate increase, reaction-time improvement, or universally optimal number. The useful interpretation is practical: a lower value recognizes smaller or earlier stick movements, while an excessively low value can make it easier to select an unintended direction.

What lowering the value does

  • Guard-direction changes can register with less stick travel.
  • A directional input that previously felt delayed may be recognized sooner.
  • Accidental or imprecise movement becomes more consequential as sensitivity rises.

What lowering the value does not do

  • It does not widen the parry timing window.
  • It does not make every parry occur earlier.
  • It does not compensate for an incorrect attack read or a mistimed input.
  • It does not guarantee better results at a particular numeric setting.

How to tune the deadzone without losing directional accuracy

Menu names can change between platforms or later updates, so use the current Controls or Advanced Controls screen and look for the right-stick guard-mode switch deadzone. Do not assume that a number shown in a controller profile is the same control as the in-game guard setting.

  1. Record the starting point. Begin at the default value of 10 if that is what your game shows. If your profile already uses another value, write it down so you can reverse the change.
  2. Lower the setting in a small step. Change only the guard-mode switch deadzone, leaving other controls untouched. A small change makes it easier to identify whether the new behavior helps or introduces errors.
  3. Test a known attack pattern. Use one repeatable opponent move rather than a full match. Check whether the guard direction appears when you expect it and whether the game selects the direction you intended.
  4. Check both speed and accuracy. A setting is useful only if the guard registers promptly and points in the correct direction. Faster registration with frequent wrong-direction selections is not an improvement.
  5. Repeat one step at a time. If the input still feels late and your direction remains reliable, lower the value another small increment and test again.
  6. Raise it when errors appear. If the guard flips to a neighboring direction, changes before you intend it, or becomes difficult to aim, restore the previous value or increase it slightly.
  7. Confirm in a real match. After practice, play several normal encounters. Keep the lowest value that remains dependable under movement, camera changes, and pressure—not merely the lowest number available.

This procedure is an application of Ubisoft’s stated sensitivity-versus-accuracy trade-off. It is not evidence that a particular increment or final value has been experimentally proven best.

Use the game’s practice tools to verify the change

Training Arena

For Honor’s Training Arena lets you recreate a situation and practice against a bot or a selected move. Ubisoft’s documentation says the arena can display visual feedback for parry and counter-guardbreak timing windows. That makes it useful for separating two problems:

  • If the guard direction is wrong or fails to appear, investigate the deadzone and stick control.
  • If the direction is correct but the timing indicator shows a miss, the deadzone is not the issue; work on reading the attack and pressing within the displayed window.

Repeat one attack at a time. Change the deadzone only after you can describe what happened on the previous attempt. Otherwise, a different bot move, camera angle, or late reaction can make the setting appear responsible for an unrelated miss.

Trials

Trials provide retryable contextual scenarios, timing feedback for opponent moves, and real-time scoring. Use a scenario that stresses the guard direction you are trying to improve. Restart often enough to compare attempts under similar conditions, and watch whether a lower deadzone improves recognition without increasing wrong-direction selections.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

Neither Training Arena nor Trials proves that a particular setting raises everyone’s parry rate. They are verification tools: they show what the game recognized and help you isolate input recognition from timing.

A practical comparison of deadzone choices

Priority What to watch Adjustment approach Trade-off
Earlier recognition The guard changes as soon as the intended stick movement begins. Lower the guard-mode switch deadzone gradually from the default. Greater sensitivity can make unintended movements register.
Directional precision The selected guard matches the direction you meant to choose. Keep the value higher if neighboring directions are triggered. A higher value may require more deliberate stick travel.
Consistency under pressure The same movement behaves reliably during a live fight. Validate the practice setting in several real encounters. A setting that feels fast in a stationary drill may be harder to control while moving.

There is no source-backed universal best number. Compare settings by the three outcomes above—registration speed, intended-direction accuracy, and unintended switches—rather than by how low the number looks.

Other controller adjustments: useful for comfort, not a larger parry window

Remapping and saved profiles

A controller with remappable buttons or saved input profiles can let you place guard, attack, or dodge controls where your hand reaches them more naturally. Sony’s documentation for the DualSense Edge describes custom profiles, button assignments, stick-sensitivity curves, stick-deadzone controls, and trigger-input ranges. Those features are ergonomic options. The available documentation does not show that buying or using this controller changes For Honor’s parry window, improves reaction time, or is required to use the game’s guard deadzone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use a hardware profile, change one layer at a time. A controller-level stick deadzone and an in-game guard deadzone can both affect when movement is recognized, and games do not all handle those layers in the same way. Keep a record of the profile so you can return to a known baseline if the stick begins to feel vague or over-sensitive.

Stick curves and controller-level deadzones

Sony defines a stick deadzone as the range of tilt before an input is recognized. A sensitivity curve changes how output increases as the stick moves. These controls can alter the feel of a directional input, but they are not documented as changing the game’s attack timing. Avoid stacking an aggressive hardware curve with a very low in-game guard deadzone until you have tested direction accuracy; the combination may make small physical movements too easy to misdirect.

Trigger ranges

Trigger-range settings control the press depth at which an input begins and reaches maximum output. They may help with comfort for games that use analog triggers, but the cited For Honor evidence concerns the right-stick guard switch, not trigger travel. Do not treat a shorter trigger range as a parry advantage unless the specific game documents that relationship.

Vibration and supported peripherals

Ubisoft’s current support material says supported peripherals can be customized through Advanced Controls and that vibration can be turned off from Controls. Disabling vibration may reduce distraction or unwanted hand movement for some players, but it is a preference and accessibility choice, not evidence of a wider or faster parry window.

Troubleshooting common deadzone problems

The guard switches before you intend it

Raise the guard-mode switch deadzone slightly and test again. Also check for thumb pressure, stick drift, or a hardware profile applying its own sensitivity curve. A lower value is not useful if neutral-stick noise repeatedly selects a direction.

The correct direction does not register

First confirm that the stick is moving far enough and that no controller-level deadzone is suppressing the input. If the physical movement is clear but the game still feels slow, reduce the in-game guard deadzone by a small step and retest the same Training Arena move.

The wrong direction is selected

Increase the value until the intended direction becomes repeatable. Then examine whether you are moving diagonally or resting the thumb on the stick edge. The setting controls sensitivity; it cannot determine which direction you meant.

Parries still miss after the guard appears correctly

Leave the deadzone unchanged and focus on timing. Training Arena’s visual timing feedback can show whether the input arrived outside the parry window. A correctly selected guard with a late parry is evidence of a timing problem, not proof that the deadzone needs to be lower.

The setting is missing

Check the current Controls or Advanced Controls menus and the game’s current patch notes. Ubisoft’s documented guard-deadzone change is tied to For Honor v1.07, published May 11, 2017; menu labels or availability can differ in later versions and on different platforms. If the game you are playing is not For Honor, it may simply not offer an equivalent control.

What the available evidence does not establish

  • No published percentage shows how much lowering the deadzone improves parry success.
  • No named population study establishes a reaction-time gain from a particular controller.
  • No universal numeric setting applies across players, controllers, platforms, or games.
  • No display, connection-latency, or frame-time recommendation is established by the deadzone documentation.

Those limits are why the safest recommendation is an incremental personal calibration: start from a known value, test one repeatable move, prioritize correct direction selection, and stop lowering the setting when errors increase.

A decision checklist

  • Playing For Honor? Look for the right-stick guard-mode switch deadzone.
  • Need earlier recognition? Lower it gradually from the default of 10.
  • Seeing wrong-direction guards? Raise it until selection is reliable.
  • Unsure whether timing or input is at fault? Use Training Arena feedback on one repeatable attack.
  • Considering new hardware? Buy or configure a controller for remapping and comfort, not an assumed parry-window increase.
  • Playing another game? Confirm that its own controls use a comparable guard-direction deadzone before applying this advice.

Bottom line

For For Honor, the documented controller adjustment is the right-stick guard-mode switch deadzone. Lowering it can make guard changes more sensitive, while values that are too low can reduce directional accuracy. Tune it in small steps, verify each change in Training Arena or Trials, and treat any controller remapping, stick curve, trigger-range, or vibration option as comfort customization—not as a way to expand the parry window.
