For a first tour of the Game Boy Color library, start with The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, then choose by mood: Pokémon or Dragon Warrior III for role-playing, Wario for inventive platforming, Tetris DX for quick puzzles, or Metal Gear Solid for stealth. These ten picks are an editorial selection, not a claim that every game earned a perfect review score or that there is one definitive top ten.
What makes these Game Boy Color games stand out?
The appeal of the library is its range. A small handheld could host an expansive role-playing game, a puzzle game suited to short sessions, or an adventure built around exploration and revisiting familiar places. This list brings together those different strengths rather than treating one genre or review ranking as the measure of quality.

Nintendo Life’s all-library ranking is one useful editorial reference, but rankings are opinions, not a universal consensus. Its first-party list is reader-ranked and may change. The selections below are best understood as ten distinctive games worth considering, with the kind of play each offers made explicit.
Ten classic Game Boy Color games to try
1. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
This color-enhanced edition builds on a Game Boy adventure rather than replacing it with a wholly different game. Its unusual setting and exploration give it a strong identity, while an additional color dungeon provides a new challenge. Nintendo Life places it first in its all-library list, and Nintendo currently includes it in its Australian Switch Classics catalog.

- New and high quality.
- Compatible for both US/EU/JAP versions console.
- RPG games can be saved by the battery inside, but Action games have no saving function.
- 108 in 1
- GBC games can't play on the GB game console
2. Pokémon Gold and Silver
Gold and Silver are two versions of a major handheld role-playing adventure. They occupy one place here because the games are a paired release: choose between versions rather than expecting two entirely unrelated recommendations. Nintendo Life ranks the pair second in its all-library guide. They suit players looking for a longer RPG built around Pokémon and a journey through its world.
3. Wario Land II
Wario Land II takes a different approach from the familiar run-and-jump platformer. Its distinctive design makes it a good choice if you want a Nintendo platform game that does not simply repeat the usual Mario-style formula. It is a strong fit for players who value mechanical variety as much as straightforward speed.
4. Wario Land 3
This platform-puzzle adventure is organized around stages and paths that can be revisited. Progress depends on working through the world and returning to places with new possibilities, making it a better fit for curious explorers than for players seeking a strictly linear run. Nintendo lists it in its Australian Switch Classics catalog.

5. Shantae
Shantae is a late Game Boy Color platform adventure developed by WayForward and published by Capcom, according to Nintendo Life’s guide. It broadens the list beyond Nintendo’s own series and is worth considering if you want a colorful action-adventure rather than an RPG or puzzle game.
6. Metal Gear Solid
The Game Boy Color entry is a handheld stealth game with a different perspective from the console series. Treat it as its own portable take on stealth, not as the PlayStation game in miniature; the available evidence does not establish a reason to label it mainline canon. It is the pick for players who want careful movement and stealth-oriented play on the system.
7. Tetris DX
Tetris DX keeps the recognizable block-stacking puzzle formula and adds color, extra modes, and a save feature, as described by the cited coverage. Its immediate play makes it an easy choice for brief sessions, while the modes give players more than one way to approach the familiar puzzle. It is also on Nintendo’s Australian Switch Classics list.
Rank #3
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
8. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
Oracle of Seasons is another Zelda adventure to consider if you want a second fantasy option alongside Link’s Awakening DX. Nintendo currently lists it in the Australian Switch Classics catalog. Choose it for an adventure-led experience rather than the short-session puzzle play of Tetris DX or the character-building focus of an RPG.

9. Pokémon Trading Card Game
This is the list’s card-battle alternative to Pokémon’s creature-collecting role-playing games. Rather than choosing it as another version of Gold or Silver, pick it when you want battles built around cards. Nintendo Life includes it in its guide, and Nintendo lists it in the Australian Switch Classics catalog.
10. Dragon Warrior III
Dragon Warrior III is the more ambitious traditional RPG choice in this selection. GameSpot’s coverage discusses additions in the Game Boy Color version and how it relates to earlier versions. It belongs here for players who want a substantial role-playing adventure, not because the handheld edition should be mistaken for an entirely unrelated game.
Rank #4
- New and high quality.
- Compatible for both US/EU/JAP versions console.
- RPG games can be saved by the battery inside, but Action games have no saving function.
- 30 in 1
- GBC games can't play on the GB game console

How to play them now
Check the current Switch catalog in your region
Nintendo’s Australian Game Boy Classics page lists selected Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles available through its Switch application and says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. The listed games include Link’s Awakening DX, Tetris DX, Wario Land 3, Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons, and Pokémon Trading Card Game. It does not include every game in this article. Catalogs can vary by region and change, so check Nintendo’s page for your country before subscribing or expecting a particular title.
Check cartridge compatibility before buying
The Game Boy Color library includes both dual-compatible cartridges and titles intended for Game Boy Color. Confirm the specific game’s cartridge and hardware compatibility before buying or using original hardware; the console family name alone is not enough to establish compatibility for an individual cartridge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to check when collecting original cartridges
Original cartridges are a secondhand collecting option, but their condition and authenticity depend on the individual listing. Before buying, review the seller’s reputation and ask for clear cartridge photos. Check the region and condition, and look for signs that the cartridge is authentic. No particular listing or current price is established here, so compare current offers yourself rather than relying on a fixed price expectation.
