What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The right Chromebook is the one that supports Google Play, runs the specific Android apps you need, and will keep doing so throughout its support life. There is no universal winner: Play Store support is model-specific, app availability is app-specific, and Chromebook Plus is a hardware baseline rather than a guarantee that every Android app will install or work correctly.
Before buying, verify the exact model in ChromeOS settings, check each must-have app on that device, compare memory, storage, processor and input hardware with the app’s needs, and inspect the model’s automatic-update policy. This process is more reliable than choosing by brand, screen size or a Chromebook Plus badge alone.

Start with the exact Chromebook model, not the product family
Google says you can download Android apps from the Play Store app and use them on a Chromebook, but only supported devices expose that capability. Two Chromebooks with similar names can have different processors, firmware and support policies, so compare the complete model number and configuration listed by the seller.

- Open Settings in ChromeOS.
- Select Apps.
- Look for Manage Google Play preferences.
- Open that option and confirm that Google Play is enabled.
Google’s support instructions say that if Manage Google Play preferences is missing, that Chromebook does not work with Android apps. Check this on the actual unit when possible, or require a return option when buying online. The current Google instructions are at Google Chromebook Help.

A work or school administrator can disable Play Store access even on a technically compatible model. If the Chromebook will be managed by an organisation, ask its administrator whether Android app installation is allowed before you purchase or enrol it.
Check the apps you actually depend on
Device compatibility and app compatibility are separate checks. Google warns that some Android apps do not work on some Chromebooks. Availability can depend on screen size, Android version and location, and an app that works today can change its Chromebook support after an update. Google’s explanation is in App compatibility with Android and Chromebooks.
Build a must-have app list
Write down the apps that would make you return the Chromebook if they failed. Include productivity tools, school systems, creative software, games, banking or authentication apps, and any peripheral-control utility. Separate “must run” apps from conveniences; this prevents a single optional app from distorting the whole purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest availability before paying
On a Chromebook with Play Store access, search for each app and inspect its installation page. A listing may be unavailable, marked incompatible or offered with a different feature set. If you cannot test the target unit, ask the developer whether the current ChromeOS and Chromebook form factor are supported. Keep screenshots or written confirmation for critical business or school software, since compatibility can change.
Expect phone-to-Chromebook differences
Android apps may present a tablet or resizable layout rather than a phone interface. Some functions assume touch gestures, sensors, phone calling or a particular Android version that a Chromebook does not provide. Other apps accept mouse clicks even without a touchscreen. Treat a successful installation as the beginning of testing, not proof that every workflow is equivalent to using a phone.

What Chromebook Plus tells you—and what it does not
Chromebook Plus is useful as a minimum hardware filter. Google’s current eligibility guidance requires a qualifying processor, at least 8 GB of RAM, at least 128 GB of storage, a 1080p-or-better webcam with Temporal Noise Reduction, and a Full HD IPS-or-better display. The requirements and the list of eligible devices are maintained on Google’s Chromebook Plus OS update eligibility page.
Those specifications provide more headroom for multitasking than entry-level configurations, but the badge is not an Android compatibility certificate. An eligible Chromebook Plus model can still lack a particular app, be restricted by an administrator or behave differently from an Android phone. Confirm Play Store access and your app list separately.
Use the Plus criteria as a comparison baseline
| Feature | Chromebook Plus eligibility guidance | How it affects Android apps |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | A qualifying CPU; Google’s page identifies eligible devices rather than giving one universal consumer performance score. | More capable processors generally leave more resources for several apps, browser tabs and background services, but the app developer’s requirements remain decisive. |
| Memory | 8 GB or more RAM | Useful for switching between Android apps and Chrome tabs without closing processes. It does not make an incompatible app compatible. |
| Storage | 128 GB or more | Leaves room for apps, downloaded media and ChromeOS updates. Android app data can consume considerably more space than the initial download. |
| Webcam | 1080p or better with Temporal Noise Reduction | Relevant to video calls and camera-based apps, not a requirement for Play Store installation. |
| Display | Full HD IPS or better | Provides a more comfortable canvas for tablet-style interfaces; resolution alone does not ensure that an app supports the screen. |
Google’s page names the models that meet the Plus definition. Because that list and retail configurations can change, use the exact model identifier on the page rather than assuming every device in a product line qualifies.
Match memory, storage and processor to your workload
RAM: separate a deployment minimum from a buying target
Google’s Chrome Enterprise guidance recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage for managed Android app deployments. That is deployment guidance, not a universal consumer performance threshold or a promise that every app will run well. Read it as a floor for tightly controlled, light workloads—not as a reason to choose a 4 GB consumer Chromebook for demanding apps. The guidance is at Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help.
For a personal Chromebook running several Android apps alongside Chrome, 8 GB of RAM is the more practical baseline and is also part of Chromebook Plus eligibility. Choose more only when the exact model offers it and your workload justifies it; additional memory cannot fix missing APIs, unsupported screen layouts or an app blocked by policy.

Storage: account for the whole device
Android packages, offline files, games, photos and cached media all share Chromebook storage with ChromeOS. The advertised capacity is not the free space after system files and recovery partitions. A 128 GB configuration gives substantially more room for multiple apps than a 32 GB model, especially if you download maps, video or large game assets. Cloud storage can reduce local pressure but cannot replace space for apps that require local data.

Processor: use the developer’s requirement first
Look for a processor family and architecture accepted by the app developer. Some apps are built or optimised for particular instruction sets, graphics capabilities or Android versions. A faster CPU may improve loading and multitasking, but it does not override an app’s device filter. When a developer publishes Chromebook requirements, those requirements outrank a generic “faster processor” comparison.
Choose the form factor for how the apps work
Touchscreen and stylus
Touch is valuable for drawing, handwriting, games and interfaces designed around swipes or long presses. A stylus can matter for annotation or pressure-sensitive work, but only if the Chromebook and app support the required pen features. Google’s enterprise guidance notes that app needs vary and that some apps may prefer touchscreens or styluses. Do not pay for touch merely because an app exists in the Play Store; confirm that touch improves your specific workflow.
Convertible versus clamshell
A 2-in-1 hinge lets you rotate the display for tablet-style use and can make portrait-oriented apps easier to operate. It also adds weight, moving parts and cost. A conventional clamshell is often preferable when you primarily type, use a mouse and keep the display fixed. Check whether the app rotates correctly and whether its controls remain usable in tablet mode before choosing a convertible for that reason alone.
Screen size and orientation
Screen size can affect app availability and usability. Some listings restrict installation on unusually small or large displays, and an interface designed for a phone may leave large empty areas on a laptop panel. Verify the layout at the intended resolution and test portrait rotation if the app depends on it. Full HD is a sensible baseline for a general Android-app Chromebook, while higher resolutions can increase scaling demands and battery use.

Check the update lifecycle before buying an older Chromebook
Support policy is part of Android compatibility. On eligible Chromebooks released before 2021, opting into extended updates removes Android apps and Google Play Store access. Google documents this trade-off in Extended updates support.
If you decline extended updates
Declining the opt-in preserves Android apps and Play Store access for now, but automatic ChromeOS updates stop. Over time, security fixes, ChromeOS features and app-developer support may end. This is a deliberate trade: retain Android support today while accepting a declining maintenance position.
If you accept extended updates
On affected pre-2021 models, the extended-update path removes the Play Store and Android apps. Do not select it on a device bought specifically for Android software unless you have confirmed that losing those apps is acceptable.
What to verify in a listing
- The exact model and board name, not only the marketing series.
- The automatic-update end date shown by Google or in ChromeOS settings.
- Whether the model is eligible for extended updates and what features that choice removes.
- Whether the seller’s “new” or refurbished stock has already passed important support milestones.
A buying procedure that prevents expensive mistakes
- List your non-negotiable apps. Record the required functions, not just app names—for example, offline editing, pen input, camera access or a specific sign-in method.
- Shortlist exact configurations. Capture model number, processor, RAM, storage, display resolution, touchscreen and stylus support.
- Verify Play Store support. On the unit, follow Settings > Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. If the option is absent, stop considering that model for Android apps.
- Check every must-have app. Search the Play Store on the target Chromebook, or obtain current compatibility information from the developer.
- Compare hardware with the workload. Treat 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage as a useful Chromebook Plus baseline, then adjust for large games, creative apps, offline media and multitasking.
- Choose input hardware intentionally. Add touchscreen, stylus or convertible mode only when your apps benefit from them.
- Confirm support policy. Check automatic-update status and avoid opting into an extended-update path that removes Android support.
- Test during the return window. Install the critical apps, sign in, test peripherals and exercise the exact workflows you need before the return deadline.
Decision guide for common buyers
| Your priority | What to seek | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Several productivity apps and many browser tabs | Chromebook Plus-class hardware, with at least 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. | Each productivity app’s listing, account support and offline behaviour. |
| Drawing, handwriting or tablet games | Touchscreen, compatible stylus and a convertible design if tablet mode helps. | Pen features, rotation, touch controls and the app’s screen-size restrictions. |
| Large games or offline media | More local storage than the minimum and a processor/GPU accepted by the developer. | Download size, graphics requirements, controller support and sustained performance expectations. |
| School or company deployment | A model approved by the administrator, with predictable management and support. | Whether policy permits Play Store access; Google’s 4 GB/32 GB managed-deployment guidance is not a consumer guarantee. |
| Lowest-cost refurbished purchase | A model with remaining automatic updates and confirmed Play Store support. | Exact update date and the consequences of any extended-update prompt. |
Troubleshooting Android apps on a Chromebook
The Play Store option is missing
Recheck the exact model and ChromeOS version. If Manage Google Play preferences is not present, Google does not support Android apps on that Chromebook. On a managed device, contact the administrator; a policy may be hiding or disabling Play Store access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The app cannot be installed
Check the app’s Google Play compatibility message, location settings and Android-version requirements. A different screen size or device configuration can trigger a developer restriction. Do not assume that sideloading or a newer Chromebook will solve a deliberate compatibility block.

The app installs but behaves incorrectly
Test with the latest ChromeOS and app updates, then check keyboard, mouse, touch, camera, microphone and rotation permissions. Compare the Chromebook workflow with the developer’s documented Chromebook requirements. If a phone-only feature is essential, a Chromebook may not be the right platform even though installation succeeds.
Apps disappear after an update decision
Review whether an eligible pre-2021 Chromebook was enrolled in extended updates. Google states that this choice removes Android apps and Play Store access. Reversing the decision may require following Google’s recovery instructions and can involve a device reset, so back up local files before changing update channels or policies.
The practical verdict
Buy the exact Chromebook that passes all six gates: Play Store support, availability of your must-have apps, adequate RAM and storage, suitable processor, appropriate touch or convertible hardware, and a support lifecycle that preserves Android access. Chromebook Plus is a sensible starting point because its published baseline includes 8 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, a Full HD IPS-or-better display and a higher-quality webcam, but it remains a specification category—not a promise that every Android app will work.
If a seller cannot provide the exact model identifier or let you verify Play Store access, choose another listing. Compatibility evidence for your own apps is more valuable than a generic ranking, a low price or a familiar product name.
