That path uses the Sony ECM-W5 system and a compatible Sony camera with the required digital-audio support in its Multi Interface Shoe. DJI Mic 3 can create 32-bit-float files, but those files are recorded inside its transmitters; DJI documents the receiver-to-camera feed as 48 kHz/24-bit.
What “32-bit-float input” means in this question
There are two different things commonly described as “32-bit float” in wireless microphone specifications:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Camera-file recording: the wireless receiver sends a digital 32-bit-float signal into the camera, and the camera stores that audio inside the video file.
- Transmitter backup recording: each transmitter records a separate 32-bit-float audio file, while the receiver sends a different format to the camera.
Only the first arrangement gives you a 32-bit-float soundtrack that is already synchronized with the video. The second can still protect an interview or event from a bad camera feed, but it creates a separate audio file that must be copied, synchronized and edited later.

It gives the recorder more numerical headroom when levels are adjusted in post-production. Distortion introduced before conversion, such as an overloaded microphone capsule or transmitter input, cannot be repaired simply by having a 32-bit-float file.

The documented wireless camera path: Sony ECM-W5
Sony’s 14 October 2026 announcement says the ECM-W5 sends audio through the camera’s Multi Interface Shoe. In Sony’s description, “32bit float audio travels digitally and directly to a compatible camera and records with video in a single file.” That is the clearest documented example of a wireless microphone system placing 32-bit-float audio in the camera’s own recording.
What the ECM-W5 system includes
- ECM-W5T: the transmitter worn or positioned near the speaker.
- ECM-W5R: the receiver that mounts on the camera.
- Multi Interface Shoe connection: the digital link between receiver and camera; this is not the same as a 3.5 mm analog cable.
The system is intended for workflows such as interviews, panels, events and livestream production where keeping audio inside the camera file can remove a synchronization step. Sony states a transmission distance of up to 500 m line of sight, transmitter memory of up to 64 GB, and storage of up to 90 hours at 32-bit float/48 kHz. These are manufacturer specifications; they are not independent range or endurance measurements, and an obstructed or radio-congested location can produce different results.
Camera compatibility is conditional
The receiver does not make every Sony camera a 32-bit-float recorder. The body must have a Multi Interface Shoe that supports the required digital-audio interface. Sony’s announcement does not expose the complete, body-by-body compatibility list in its accessible text. Before buying, use Sony’s compatibility page and verify the exact camera model, rather than assuming that every camera with an MI Shoe supports this feature.

How to confirm that a camera will capture the wireless 32-bit-float signal
- Identify the exact camera body. Record the full model designation, including regional or generation differences.
- Check Sony’s ECM-W5 compatibility listing. Look specifically for digital audio through the Multi Interface Shoe, not merely physical shoe compatibility.
- Confirm the required recording format. The listing or camera documentation must identify 32-bit-float audio support for the ECM-W5 path. A camera that accepts digital audio but records only 24-bit files does not meet the requirement.
- Mount the ECM-W5R on the MI Shoe. The documented direct path uses the shoe’s digital connection; do not substitute a 3.5 mm cable and expect the same format.
- Run a test recording before a paid shoot. Inspect the resulting camera file in software that reports audio bit depth and sample rate. Confirm that the audio is present in the video file and is not only on the transmitter.
Exact menu names can vary by camera model. The available announcement does not provide a universal menu path, so use the body’s manual for the final audio-setting and file-verification steps.
DJI Mic 3: 32-bit float in the transmitter, not the camera feed
DJI describes Mic 3 with “Dual-File 32-bit Float Internal Recording.” In practical terms, a transmitter can preserve a 32-bit-float backup file while the receiver supplies audio to the camera. DJI separately specifies that lossless audio sent from the transmitter to the receiver is 48 kHz/24-bit.
Therefore, a conventional camera connection from the Mic 3 receiver produces a 24-bit camera soundtrack according to DJI’s documentation. The transmitter’s 32-bit-float file remains useful as a safety recording, but it does not turn the camera’s own audio track into 32-bit float.

The Mic Series Camera Adapter does not change the bit depth
DJI also documents a Mic Series Camera Adapter that connects the receiver directly to Sony cameras through an MI hot shoe and supports 48 kHz/24-bit digital audio recording. The adapter can simplify mounting, power and cable management. It does not convert that camera feed to 32-bit float.

| System | Where 32-bit float is recorded | Documented camera feed | Camera connection | Workflow consequence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony ECM-W5 | Inside the compatible camera file | 32-bit float, through the documented compatible path | Digital Multi Interface Shoe | Video and 32-bit-float audio are stored together |
| DJI Mic 3 | Inside the transmitter’s internal backup file | 48 kHz/24-bit from receiver to camera | Receiver output or DJI camera adapter | 32-bit-float backup must be synchronized separately if used |
Why a 3.5 mm receiver connection is not enough
A 3.5 mm input is normally an analog connection. The receiver converts its wireless signal to an analog voltage, and the camera’s own analog-to-digital converter determines the format stored in the video file. Unless the camera and the complete interface explicitly document 32-bit-float recording, a 3.5 mm connection is not evidence that the camera file is 32-bit float.
- A receiver may advertise 32-bit-float internal recording while still outputting 24-bit or analog audio to a camera.
- A camera may have an MI Shoe but lack the digital-audio implementation required by the receiver.
- A cable can carry an audio signal without carrying the format advertised for a transmitter’s local file.
When comparing systems, ask two separate questions: “What format does the transmitter save?” and “What format does the camera write?” The second answer determines whether the video file itself contains 32-bit-float audio.
Adjacent wired option: Sony XLR-A4
Sony’s XLR-A4 is relevant if your priority is 32-bit-float recording in the camera but you do not require a wireless microphone. Sony documents 96 kHz/32-bit-float recording for compatible Alpha cameras when the camera has an MI Shoe that supports the digital audio interface.

The XLR-A4 is an XLR adapter, not a wireless receiver. It belongs in a wired-input setup: connect microphones to the adapter’s XLR inputs, mount the adapter on the compatible camera, and verify the body on Sony’s compatibility page. It should not be counted as another wireless system that sends 32-bit float from a transmitter.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECM-W5 | Yes | Camera file, when the body is compatible | 32-bit float/48 kHz | Wireless interviews, panels, events and livestreams |
| DJI Mic 3 | Yes | Transmitter backup file | Internal 32-bit float; camera feed 48 kHz/24-bit | Wireless capture with a separate safety recording |
| XLR-A4 | No | Camera file on compatible Alpha bodies | 96 kHz/32-bit float | Wired microphones and XLR production workflows |
Choose the setup by the file you need at the end of the shoot
Choose ECM-W5 when one camera file is the priority
The ECM-W5 path is the appropriate choice when you want the camera to contain the 32-bit-float soundtrack and you are working with a body confirmed on Sony’s compatibility list. This can reduce post-production handling because the audio is recorded with the video rather than being recovered from a transmitter card.
Choose DJI Mic 3 when a transmitter backup is acceptable
Mic 3 makes sense when you value a local 32-bit-float safety file and can work with a 48 kHz/24-bit camera feed. Plan for a two-file workflow: retain the camera recording for picture and reference audio, then synchronize the transmitter recording only when its quality or level is needed.
Choose XLR-A4 for wired microphones
The XLR-A4 is the relevant option when wireless transmission is unnecessary and you need documented 32-bit-float capture from compatible Sony Alpha cameras through an XLR adapter.
Practical test and troubleshooting checklist
The camera records no audio
- Confirm the receiver is seated fully on the MI Shoe.
- Verify that the camera model appears on Sony’s ECM-W5 compatibility listing.
- Check whether the body requires a specific digital-audio setting or operating condition in its manual.
- Repeat the test with a short recording before changing other production equipment.
The camera file contains audio, but it is 24-bit
That result indicates that the camera or connection is operating in a 24-bit path. Recheck body compatibility and the connection type. If the system is DJI Mic 3, 48 kHz/24-bit is the documented receiver-to-camera format, so the 32-bit-float file must be taken from the transmitter instead.

You can find a 32-bit-float file, but it is separate from the video
This is expected for transmitter-internal recording. Keep the transmitter file and camera file together, mark the start of the take with a clap or spoken cue, and synchronize them in the editor. The Sony ECM-W5’s documented compatible path is the exception because the 32-bit-float audio is written into the camera file.
The wireless range is shorter than the advertised figure
Sony’s “up to 500 m line of sight” figure is a product specification under line-of-sight conditions. People, walls, vehicles, local radio traffic and antenna orientation can reduce usable range. Treat the number as an upper specification, not a guaranteed distance for every venue.
Bottom line for buyers in October 2026
If “32-bit float input” means 32-bit-float audio inside the camera’s video file, the documented wireless answer is Sony’s ECM-W5 used with a Sony camera that supports its digital Multi Interface Shoe audio interface. The exact compatible body list must be checked before purchase, and the system was announced for November 2026 availability.
DJI Mic 3 is not equivalent for this specific requirement: its transmitters record 32-bit float internally, while DJI documents a 48 kHz/24-bit receiver feed to the camera. Sony’s XLR-A4 can provide 32-bit-float camera recording in a compatible wired setup, but it is an XLR adapter rather than a wireless microphone system.
