Start with Room Acoustics in the StreamMagic app, not the Equaliser. Enter the room length in the direction the speakers face and the distance from the speakers to the wall directly behind them, then listen to familiar music and make small adjustments. Cambridge Audio says this establishes a better foundation before personal tonal changes. If the L/R X sounds bass-heavy, treat speaker placement and the room as part of the diagnosis. Use Equaliser, DynamEQ, surface compensation and subwoofer controls only for the specific problem each is designed to address.
Before changing anything: make sure the L/R X is connected
The L/R X is a network player as well as an active stereo speaker system. Its source selection and audio-customisation controls are accessed through the StreamMagic app, and the user manual says a network connection is required for the system to function. If the speakers are offline, settings may be unavailable or changes may not apply.

Complete the network setup for your local Wi-Fi or wired network first, following Cambridge Audio’s L/R M and L/R X network setup guide. Keep the phone running StreamMagic on the same local network while configuring the speakers. Once the app can see the L/R X and play a source, use the sequence below.

1. Set up Room Acoustics first
Room Acoustics is the first adjustment because it addresses the room rather than imposing a taste-based tonal curve. Cambridge Audio’s official FAQ says, “Yes , we recommend setting up Room Acoustics first. It corrects how your room affects the sound, giving you a better foundation before making any personal adjustments with the Equaliser.” The FAQ was published June 22, 2026 and revised September 29, 2026. You can read it at Cambridge Audio’s Room Acoustics explanation.

Enter the two measurements accurately
- Open the StreamMagic app and select the L/R X.
- Open Audio Settings → Room Acoustics.
- Enter the room length measured in the direction the speakers face.
- Enter the distance between the speakers and the wall directly behind them.
- Apply the settings, play a familiar track, and listen from your normal seat.
- Fine-tune only after you have heard the correction with your usual music.
Use consistent measuring points. The room-length value is not simply the longest dimension if the speakers face across the shorter dimension; it is the distance in the direction of speaker radiation. The rear-wall distance is the spacing behind the speakers, not the distance to a side wall or to the listening position.
Why placement still matters
Room correction cannot remove every effect of a physical setup. Cambridge Audio identifies walls, corners, furniture and the listening position as contributors to a bass-heavy presentation. After applying Room Acoustics, move the speakers in small increments—particularly a little farther from the rear wall—and listen again after each change. Keep the speakers symmetrical relative to the room where possible, and change one variable at a time so you can identify what helped.
The manufacturer’s support answer to “My L/R X speakers sound quite bass-heavy out of the box—is that normal?” recommends this combination of correction and placement experimentation. It does not establish a universal amount of rear-wall clearance, so do not treat any particular distance as a required target. See the dated FAQ at Cambridge Audio’s bass-heavy L/R X support page.

2. Use the Equaliser for a deliberate tonal preference
After Room Acoustics and placement are settled, use the Equaliser when you want a specific tonal balance rather than a room correction. The L/R X manual documents seven adjustable frequency bands and built-in presets. The controls are available in StreamMagic under the audio settings for the speakers. The current manual is the Cambridge Audio EU L/R X user manual, published June 15, 2026, with a revision reported September 3, 2026.
- Choose a built-in preset when you want a quick, reversible starting point.
- Use the seven bands for small, intentional changes to familiar material.
- Make one modest change at a time, then compare at the same volume.
- Keep a note of settings that work so you can return to them after experimenting.
There is no manufacturer-supplied “best” EQ curve for every room, speaker position or listener. Avoid copying a universal bass or treble recipe from another setup. If a broad EQ boost seems necessary to compensate for a problem that changes when you move the speakers, return to Room Acoustics and placement instead.
3. Try DynamEQ when low-volume listening loses impact
DynamEQ addresses a different problem from the Equaliser. At lower listening levels, people often perceive less bass and treble than they do at a louder reference level. DynamEQ compensates for that change in perceived balance, and the L/R X manual allows its intensity to be adjusted.

Enable it when music becomes noticeably thin or loses weight as you turn the volume down for evening or background listening. Increase intensity gradually and stop when voices, cymbals and bass sound natural at your normal quiet level. If the system sounds exaggerated at ordinary volume, reduce the intensity or turn DynamEQ off; it is a listening-level compensation, not a replacement for Room Acoustics or a permanent master EQ.

4. Add surface compensation only for a bright or dull room
Surface compensation is optional. The manual describes it as a way to help when the room sounds too bright or too dull, which can happen with different combinations of hard reflective surfaces, soft furnishings and room geometry. Treat it as a targeted finishing adjustment after the room dimensions and speaker position are correct.
Use a consistent set of recordings with vocals, acoustic instruments and percussion. If the entire presentation has an unpleasant edge or sounds overly muted across several tracks, make a small surface-compensation change and listen again. Do not use it to chase a single recording’s mastering choice.

5. Configure subwoofer controls only when a subwoofer is connected
Subwoofer settings do not affect a system being used without a subwoofer. With subwoofer output disabled, the main speakers play the full frequency range. When output is enabled, StreamMagic exposes controls for subwoofer level, phase and the high-pass filter (cutoff) applied to the main speakers.
| Control | Documented function or range |
|---|---|
| Subwoofer level | -10 dB to +10 dB |
| Main-speaker high-pass cutoff | 20 Hz to 250 Hz |
| Phase | Normal or inverted phase operation for integration |
These ranges are published in Cambridge Audio’s 2026 L/R X manual; they are control limits, not universal recommendations. Start with a modest subwoofer level. Adjust the high-pass cutoff only as needed to blend the subwoofer with the L/R X rather than making the bass louder everywhere.

Fixing thin or hollow bass
If bass becomes thin, hollow or partly cancels at the listening position, try phase inversion and compare it with the original setting. Keep the option that produces the more even, solid bass on several tracks. Because room modes vary sharply with position, make the comparison from the normal listening seat and avoid judging from a single corner of the room.

A practical adjustment order
- Verify the network: confirm the L/R X appears in StreamMagic and can play audio.
- Measure the room: record room length in the speaker-facing direction and rear-wall distance.
- Apply Room Acoustics: enter both values under Audio Settings → Room Acoustics.
- Check placement: if bass remains heavy, move the speakers slightly, especially away from the rear wall, and listen after every change.
- Choose a tonal tool: use Equaliser for personal frequency balance, DynamEQ for low-volume balance, or surface compensation for a generally bright or dull room.
- Integrate a subwoofer: only if one is connected; adjust level, cutoff and phase in small steps.
- Recheck at normal volume: a setting that helps quiet listening or one recording may be excessive at your regular level.
Common mistakes and how to recover
Changing every control at once
Multiple simultaneous changes make it impossible to tell whether the room correction, placement, EQ or DynamEQ caused the result. Return to the last known setting, then change one control or physical variable at a time.
Using EQ to cure a placement problem
If bass changes dramatically when the speakers move a small distance, the room is a major part of the problem. Revisit the Room Acoustics measurements and placement before adding a large low-frequency boost or cut.
Leaving DynamEQ on for every listening level
DynamEQ is intended to compensate for reduced perceived bass and treble at lower volume. If the system becomes too bass-forward or bright at your normal level, lower its intensity or disable it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdjusting subwoofer controls without a subwoofer
Subwoofer level, phase and high-pass settings matter only when subwoofer output is enabled and a subwoofer is connected. They cannot correct the bass response of the main speakers by themselves.
Assuming a documented range is a target
The manual’s -10 dB to +10 dB level range and 20 Hz to 250 Hz cutoff range describe what the controls permit. They do not specify one correct value for every room, subwoofer or listening position.
What each setting is for
| Setting | Use it when | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Room Acoustics | The room and speaker placement are shaping the tonal balance | Compensates for room effects using room length and rear-wall distance |
| Equaliser | You want a personal tonal balance | Seven frequency bands and built-in presets |
| DynamEQ | Low-volume listening sounds too thin | Adjustable compensation for reduced perceived bass and treble |
| Surface compensation | The room sounds broadly too bright or too dull | Optional compensation for room-surface character |
| Subwoofer controls | A subwoofer is connected | Sub level, phase and main-speaker high-pass cutoff |
The most reliable approach is therefore sequential: correct the room interaction, refine physical placement, then add only the processing that matches the remaining issue. Cambridge Audio’s official product information describes the L/R X as an active stereo streaming speaker system with an RCA subwoofer output; the configuration controls and their documented ranges come from the 2026 manual rather than from independent measurements. No independent listening test or laboratory statistic establishes a universal setting for every room.
