Angelus appears in six active-story episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: “Surprise” (Season 2, Episode 13), “Innocence” (S2E14), “Passion” (S2E17), “Killed by Death” (S2E18), “Becoming, Part One” (S2E21) and “Becoming, Part Two” (S2E22). Angel loses his soul at the end of “Surprise”; “Innocence” is the first complete episode with Angelus as the antagonist, and “Becoming, Part Two” brings the season-two storyline to its conclusion.
The complete Angelus episode list
This list uses “feature Angelus” to mean an active appearance in the main, present-day Buffy the Vampire Slayer story. It does not attempt to count every later flashback, dream, archival image or retrospective reference in Buffy or the spin-off Angel. The episode-guide evidence identifies six season-two episodes in the active Angelus run.

| “Surprise” | Season 2, Episode 13 | January 19, 1998 | Transformation at the end | Turning point: Angel loses his soul |
| “Innocence” | Season 2, Episode 14 | January 20, 1998 | First full Angelus episode | Buffy recognizes the new threat |
| “Passion” | Season 2, Episode 17 | February 24, 1998 | Angelus is the Big Bad | Psychological campaign against Buffy and the Scoobies |
| “Killed by Death” | Season 2, Episode 18 | March 3, 1998 | Brief appearance | Places Angelus inside the continuing storyline while another threat dominates |
| “Becoming, Part One” | Season 2, Episode 21 | May 12, 1998 | Angelus is the Big Bad | Buffy commits to stopping Angel; Willow finds a possible restoration spell |
| “Becoming, Part Two” | Season 2, Episode 22 | May 19, 1998 | Angelus remains the Big Bad | Acathla crisis and the season-two finale |
The six episodes are spread across the latter part of a 22-episode second season. Episodes 13 and 14 establish the change, episodes 17 and 18 show the continuing threat, and episodes 21 and 22 deliver the finale. The gap between “Innocence” and “Passion” does not mean the storyline has ended; it marks the point at which the season’s wider plots continue while Angelus remains part of the central conflict.

When does Angel become Angelus?
The change begins in “Surprise.” Angel and Buffy’s intimate encounter threatens Angel’s soul, and the episode ends with Angel losing it. That ending is the transformation point rather than a full episode-length Angelus storyline: viewers see the decisive break at the close of the episode, then follow the consequences immediately afterward.

“Innocence”, which aired the next day, is therefore the first full Angelus episode. The episode guide describes the intimate moment as transforming Angel back into Angelus, and Buffy realizes that she must destroy him. For a viewer asking where Angelus first functions as the season’s antagonist, “Innocence” is the clearest starting answer; for a viewer asking when the transformation happens, the answer is the end of “Surprise.”
Episode-by-episode viewing guide
“Surprise” — Season 2, Episode 13
“Surprise” is the necessary setup episode. Its importance is concentrated at the end, when Angel’s loss of soul changes the meaning of the relationship and launches the Angelus arc. Because the transformation occurs in the closing moments, the episode has a different kind of Angelus presence from the episodes that follow: it is a turning-point appearance, not yet a sustained antagonist performance.
Watch this episode if you want the cause of the change rather than only its aftermath. Stopping at “Innocence” would show Angelus fully established, but it would omit the event that explains how the change occurred.
“Innocence” — Season 2, Episode 14
“Innocence” is the first episode in which Angelus is fully present as the opposing force. The episode guide identifies the transformation and Buffy’s realization that she must destroy him, making this the point where the personal crisis becomes an explicit mission.

For a short Angelus-focused watch, this is the earliest episode that can stand on its own as a full Angelus installment. It still works best immediately after “Surprise,” because the previous episode supplies the transformation that “Innocence” develops.
“Passion” — Season 2, Episode 17
“Passion” is explicitly identified as an Angelus Big Bad episode. By this stage, the storyline is not simply about identifying what happened to Angel; it is about the campaign of psychological torment directed at Buffy and the Scoobies. The episode represents an escalation in the arc’s function: Angelus is now driving the season’s conflict through deliberate pressure on the group.
Its position as Episode 17 matters for viewing order. The Angelus story continues through the season even though not every intervening episode is listed as an active Angelus appearance. If you are assembling a focused watch list, move from “Innocence” to “Passion” rather than assuming that only consecutive episodes count.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Killed by Death” — Season 2, Episode 18
“Killed by Death” contains a brief Angelus appearance during its hospital storyline. The episode’s principal threat is Der Kindestod, so Angelus is not the main danger in the way he is in “Passion” or the two-part finale. His appearance nevertheless places the episode inside the continuing season-two arc.

This distinction is useful when deciding how much of the episode to prioritize. Include it in a complete Angelus chronology, because it is an active appearance; do not treat it as another full Big Bad episode, because the episode’s principal threat is elsewhere.
“Becoming, Part One” — Season 2, Episode 21
“Becoming, Part One” returns Angelus to an explicitly central role. He is listed as the Big Bad while Buffy decides that she must stop Angel, and Willow discovers a possible spell that could restore Angel’s soul. The episode therefore combines the immediate objective—stopping Angelus—with a possible route to reversing the condition.
As the first half of the season-two finale, it is not a standalone endpoint. Its decisions and discoveries lead directly into “Becoming, Part Two,” so viewers should watch the pair together.

Complete season-two chronology
For the full progression, watch all of Season 2 in order. The season has 22 episodes, and the Angelus-centered run occupies Episodes 13–22, with active appearances specifically identified in Episodes 13, 14, 17, 18, 21 and 22. This approach preserves the surrounding story rather than treating Angelus as an isolated villain plot.
Focused Angelus watch
If you want only the episodes listed for active Angelus appearances, use this order: “Surprise,” “Innocence,” “Passion,” “Killed by Death,” “Becoming, Part One” and “Becoming, Part Two.” This sequence preserves the transformation, the first full antagonist episode, the psychological escalation, the brief continuation during a different threat, and the finale.

The shortest route that still shows the origin and resolution is “Surprise,” followed by “Innocence,” then “Becoming, Part One” and “Becoming, Part Two.” This omits the middle-stage development represented by “Passion” and the brief appearance in “Killed by Death,” so it is a compressed route rather than a complete Angelus chronology.

What counts as an Angelus appearance?
The six episodes do not all use Angelus in the same way. “Surprise” contains the transformation at the end. “Innocence” gives the character a full episode as antagonist. “Passion” and both “Becoming” episodes explicitly identify Angelus as the Big Bad. “Killed by Death” includes only a brief appearance while Der Kindestod is the principal threat.
That range explains why different episode lists can appear to disagree. A list limited to episodes in which Angelus is the main villain may emphasize “Innocence,” “Passion” and the two “Becoming” episodes. A chronology of active appearances also includes “Surprise” and “Killed by Death,” because both contain Angelus-related material in the ongoing story.
Does the Angelus arc require all of Season 2?
No. You can follow the active-appearance list without watching every episode, but the complete second season provides the intended chronology around the transformation and finale. The focused list is best for viewers who want Angelus-specific episodes; the full-season order is better for viewers who want the surrounding Buffy and Scooby-team storyline in sequence.

Scope and later references
This guide deliberately limits itself to active Angelus appearances in the main Buffy the Vampire Slayer narrative. It does not claim to enumerate every flashback, dream, archival image or retrospective mention in Buffy or Angel. Those forms of appearance require a separate, comprehensive inventory; the episode information used here establishes the season-two active arc rather than a complete franchise-wide count.
