Which Browser Uses Less RAM? What Recent Tests Actually Show

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal lowest-RAM browser. Memory use changes with your operating system, browser version, open pages, extensions, profile, and what each page is doing. In a September 2026 20-tab test on one Apple Mac, Sigma had the lowest median footprint, closely followed by Brave and Firefox. In a separate 50-site, page-by-page macOS test, Brave reported the lowest average process memory. Those workloads and metrics are different, so neither result is a definitive ranking for every computer.

What the latest tests found

20 tabs kept open: Sigma led one Mac test

Sigma Browser reported testing the same 20 websites in six browsers on an Apple M3 Mac with 16 GB of unified memory running macOS Tahoe 26.6.2. The browsers used clean profiles without extensions or signed-in accounts. Each run started with a full restart, the test was repeated five times, and the median was reported. Memory means macOS physical footprint summed across all browser-related processes, not just the main window process. The test used each browser’s latest stable release available on September 11, 2026.

Browser Median memory in the 20-tab test
Sigma 6.50 GB
Brave 6.76 GB
Firefox 7.00 GB
Opera 7.08 GB
Chrome 8.25 GB
Safari 8.30 GB

The sites covered search, news, social, video, maps, design, productivity and streaming. YouTube and Twitch were open but paused; pages were not scrolled or otherwise interacted with. Sigma’s 6.50 GB median was about 1.75 GB below Chrome’s 8.25 GB in this particular setup.

One page at a time: Brave reported the lowest average RSS

Brave’s Machine Learning Research Team published a separate evaluation on September 2, 2026. A Mac Mini with an Apple M2 chip, 8 GB of unified memory and macOS 26.5.1 loaded the landing pages of the 50 most popular sites according to Brave Search statistics. Experiments ran ten times with randomized browser order, fresh isolated profiles and a 60-second stabilization period; each page stayed open for 30 seconds.

  • STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth

The metric was resident set size (RSS) aggregated across browser processes. Brave reported approximately 1,200 MB average RSS, compared with approximately 1,750 MB for Chrome, 1,620 MB for Edge and 1,650 MB for Firefox. Its summary described this as 28% less average memory than the competing browsers in that test.

This is evidence about a page-loading workload, not a 50-tab session. It should not be merged with Sigma’s physical-footprint figures to create a single leaderboard.

Which result applies to your browsing?

If you keep many tabs open

The Sigma design is closer to a multi-tab question because all 20 sites remained open together. It still represents one Mac, one set of pages and a clean profile. Signed-in web apps, extensions, active media, scrolling and longer idle periods can change the result substantially.

If you mainly open pages, use them and close them

Brave’s page-by-page evaluation is the closer match. Its lower average RSS may be useful when repeatedly loading sites, but it does not prove that Brave will use the least memory after dozens of active tabs accumulate.

If you use Windows or Linux

The cited comparisons do not establish a current winner for Windows or Linux. Process behavior, graphics memory handling, browser builds and operating-system accounting differ by platform, so Mac results should not be presented as cross-platform facts.

Why browser RAM rankings change

Websites are not equivalent workloads

A static article, video player, map, collaboration app and ad-heavy social feed have very different memory demands. Playback, background scripts, open canvases and live connections can dominate the browser’s footprint. A benchmark that pauses video and does not scroll measures a quieter state than an active work session.

Modern browsers use many processes

Tabs are only part of the total. Renderers, GPU processes, network services, extensions and other helpers also consume memory. A reading that captures only the main browser process can miss a large share of the total. Chromium’s about:memory Private figure is intended to aggregate memory used by Chromium processes; the Sigma test likewise summed browser-related processes.

Physical footprint and RSS are different metrics

macOS physical footprint and resident set size are not interchangeable measurements. They account for memory in different ways, so 6.50 GB in one test cannot be directly compared with 1,200 MB in the other as if they were the same unit and method.

Background system pressure matters more than a headline number

The practical question is whether the browser forces other applications to compress or swap memory. Chromium notes that system-wide commit charge can also reflect unrelated background services. A browser with a slightly larger measured footprint may feel faster if it avoids excessive tab reloads, while a smaller baseline may not help when an active web app is the real consumer.

How to make a fair browser-memory comparison

  1. Use the same computer and operating system. Do not compare a Windows reading with a Mac reading.
  2. Use clearly identified browser builds. Record the version and test date.
  3. Choose a fixed, realistic page set. Include the sites and web apps you actually use.
  4. Keep activity consistent. Match scrolling, playback, uploads, calls and other background behavior.
  5. Match profiles and extensions. Compare clean profiles with clean profiles, or your normal profiles with your normal profiles.
  6. Count all browser processes. Include renderer, GPU and helper processes rather than relying on one process in a task manager.
  7. Run repeated trials. Restart where appropriate and report a median or distribution instead of one convenient reading.
  8. Name the metric. State whether the result is physical footprint, RSS or another measure.

Built-in controls that reduce idle-tab memory

Chrome Memory Saver

Chrome’s Memory Saver frees memory from tabs you are not currently using so active sites and other demanding applications have more resources. An inactive tab reloads when you return to it. Google’s December 8, 2022 launch announcement claimed the feature could use “up to 40% and 10GB less memory” in maximum cases; that is a launch claim, not a guaranteed or independently measured saving for every current installation.

Microsoft Edge sleeping and discarded tabs

Edge sleeping tabs pause page activity and release some memory while preserving a quick return to the page. A discarded tab releases the page content completely, but it must reload when selected. Audio playback, screen capture and some other active behaviors can prevent a tab from sleeping.

Edge Energy Saver and performance detector

Energy Saver reduces resource use by changing background and some foreground activity, although Microsoft warns that visible slowdowns can occur. The performance detector identifies background tabs using high memory or CPU and offers controls to sleep or close them.

HP 14 inch Laptop Computer, 2027 Edition, Intel N150 CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 1TB Cloud Storage, Windows 11 with Microsoft 365
  • Designed for mobility with a slim 0.71-inch profile and lightweight 3.24 lb chassis, making it easy to carry between home, office

These settings alter tab state. A comparison must record whether they are enabled and whether tabs have slept or been discarded; otherwise, the measured difference may reflect configuration rather than the browser’s baseline.

What older “Firefox uses less memory” claims mean

Mozilla has previously said Firefox uses less memory than Chrome and explained that it limits the number of content processes. That is a years-old, Mozilla-authored product explanation, not current independent comparative evidence. It should not override newer tests that disclose their hardware, versions, workloads and measurement methods.

Practical choice by situation

  • For a Mac user keeping around 20 varied tabs open: Sigma was lowest in the cited 20-tab test, with Brave and Firefox close behind.
  • For repeated page loading on macOS: Brave reported the lowest average RSS in its 50-site evaluation.
  • For an existing Chrome or Edge setup: Memory Saver, sleeping tabs and discarded-tab controls may reduce idle-tab pressure without changing browsers.
  • For a different platform, extensions or active media: Run a comparison using your own workload; the cited tests do not establish a universal answer.

Bottom line

Ask “which browser used less RAM under this exact workload?” rather than “which browser always uses the least?” Sigma currently has the strongest result for the supplied 20-tab Mac scenario, while Brave has the strongest result in its separate page-load test. The most useful choice is the browser that keeps your actual pages responsive while its inactive-tab controls prevent background tabs from squeezing the rest of your system.
