There is no Bose-published numeric preset that is universally best for dialogue, music, or movies. Start in the Bose app’s Audio controls, use SpeechClarity only as strongly as needed for voices, keep bass and treble changes small, and adjust surround and height to suit the recording and room. Run CustomTune and verify the TV’s HDMI audio format before chasing equalization.
The controls that matter
The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar gives you several independent ways to alter what you hear. Bose documents where the controls are, but its product and launch materials do not specify a universal value for any content type. The useful approach is to identify the problem, change one control, and listen again.

Bose describes the app as providing equalization, surround and height controls in addition to the tone controls. The exact on-screen layout can change with app and firmware updates, but the product control icon remains the fallback when Audio is not immediately visible. Bose’s Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar product page and FAQs and its May 5, 2026 Lifestyle Collection announcement document these functions without prescribing numeric presets.

Open the settings in the Bose app
- Open the Bose app while the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar is connected and powered on.
- Tap Audio.
- If Audio is not shown, tap the product-control icon. When more than one Bose product is listed, select the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar first.
- Under Soundbar, use the plus and minus controls for bass and treble.
- Use the available SpeechClarity, equalization, surround and height controls for the listening change you are trying to make.
- If a bass module is paired, open Bass Module for its separate output level rather than assuming the Soundbar bass slider controls it.
Make one adjustment at a time and listen to a familiar passage for several seconds. Changing bass, treble, SpeechClarity and spatial effects together makes it impossible to identify which setting helped or caused a new problem.

Check the signal path and room before equalizing
Use the correct HDMI connection
For a television source, connect the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port. Bose recommends eARC when available because it provides the soundbar with the broadest format support. Bose notes that ordinary ARC does not carry lossless formats and that the Dolby formats available over ARC vary by television and model. If a streaming app or disc player sounds unexpectedly flat, inspect the TV and source-device audio-format menus before raising effects or bass.
The soundbar can play Dolby Atmos without additional speakers. Optional compatible Lifestyle Ultra Speakers can add a fuller wraparound presentation, but they are not required for Atmos playback or for any of the app adjustments described here.
Give the soundbar a clear position
Place it centred beneath the TV on a flat, stable, level surface. Bose says it works best near the front edge of a cabinet or mantle; do not put it inside a shelf that blocks its top or sides. If you wall-mount it with the Bose Soundbar Wall Bracket, leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the soundbar and the TV. Bose does not recommend mounting it above the TV. Obstructions and an off-centre position can alter spatial balance, so moving the bar may solve a problem that an EQ slider cannot.

Best starting approach for dialogue and speech
1. Use SpeechClarity sparingly
SpeechClarity is the soundbar’s adjustable dialogue-enhancement feature. Start at its lowest audible increase, play a scene with overlapping voices, and raise it one step at a time until words are easy to follow. Stop when the dialogue is clear but still sounds integrated with the programme. Bose does not publish a universal level, a numeric target or a movie-specific SpeechClarity preset; the setting is therefore a listening-based adjustment, not an official recommendation.

2. Keep tone changes modest
If voices remain masked, try a small bass reduction before making a large treble boost. Excess low-frequency energy can compete with speech, while excessive treble can make consonants brittle or fatiguing. Return either slider toward its neutral position if the change makes voices sound processed. These are general listening principles, not a measured performance claim about this particular soundbar.
3. Confirm the programme’s audio format
When dialogue is still poor, check the TV or connected player’s digital-audio setting. Bose support advises selecting Dolby Digital 5.1 when that option is available and supported. A mismatched or needlessly restricted format can change channel handling before the sound reaches SpeechClarity or the tone controls.
4. Run CustomTune after physical changes
If the bar is correctly connected but voices vary dramatically by seat or sound hollow, run CustomTune. The process measures the room using the microphone in an iOS or Android phone while the soundbar plays test sounds. Follow the prompts in the Bose app from the normal listening position. Bose specifically recommends CustomTune when sound quality is poor because room reflections change how the system is heard.

Settings approach for music
Start close to neutral
Begin with bass and treble near their neutral positions and use a familiar recording. Raise or lower one slider by a small increment, listen through a complete phrase, then decide whether to keep it. Recordings differ in mastering, instrumentation and level, so a setting that flatters a quiet acoustic track may overload a dense electronic mix.

Control the size of the presentation
Surround and height can make music seem larger, but not every recording is intended to sound enveloping. If a stereo track develops an exaggerated centre hole, diffuse vocals or distracting movement, lower surround or height rather than compensating with treble. If the presentation feels too narrow for a live recording, increase one spatial control modestly and compare it with the original setting.
Use the room as part of the decision
Strong reflections from a bare wall, glass cabinet or corner can make bass linger and treble glare. Correct placement and CustomTune should come before large tonal changes. When a bass module is installed, adjust its dedicated level separately so you do not accidentally remove mid-bass from the soundbar while trying to control deep bass.
Settings approach for movies
Preserve the source format
Use the TV’s eARC connection when possible and allow the television or player to pass through the format it supports. Bose says ARC’s lossless limitations and Dolby-format compatibility depend on the TV and model. A movie soundtrack that arrives in a restricted format cannot be restored by increasing surround or height.

Use surround and height to increase the sense of space, then evaluate a dialogue-heavy scene rather than judging only an action sequence. If voices become difficult to follow, apply SpeechClarity only until they return to the mix. Avoid assuming that the highest spatial setting is best: room reflections, seating distance and the soundtrack itself all affect the result.

Understand Atmos and optional speakers
The Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar supports Dolby Atmos playback by itself. Bose says optional Lifestyle Ultra Speakers provide a fuller wraparound experience. Additional speakers change the system’s physical coverage; they do not create a required setting or a universal number for SpeechClarity, bass, surround or height.
Run CustomTune correctly
- Place the soundbar where it will normally be used and remove temporary obstructions from its top and sides.
- Use a compatible iOS or Android phone with its microphone unobstructed.
- Open the Bose app, select the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar and start CustomTune when prompted.
- Hold or place the phone as the app instructs while the soundbar plays its calibration sounds.
- Wait for the app to finish before judging dialogue, bass or spatial effects.
Bose describes the phone microphone as the reference and the soundbar as the test-signal source. The product FAQ says the process works with most iOS and Android mobile devices, not necessarily every handset. If the calibration fails, move away from loud competing sounds, keep the microphone clear and repeat the app’s prompts.

Use the same short passage at the same listening volume. Change only one control, switch back to the previous value, and decide which version better meets the relevant criterion.

Keep separate notes for different sources if you regularly switch between television speakers, a streaming box, game console and disc player. Their output formats and mastering can differ, so one compromise setting may not suit all of them.

Troubleshooting settings that appear ineffective
The Audio control is missing
Tap the product-control icon, select the soundbar if multiple Bose products are registered, and then open Audio. If the app still does not show the controls, confirm that it has connected to the soundbar rather than only displaying an offline product.
A change produces no audible difference
Play a source that is actually routed through the soundbar, verify the TV’s HDMI connection, and check whether you changed Soundbar bass or the separate Bass Module level. Some programme material contains little deep bass or height information, so use a familiar passage with content in the range you are testing.
The sound is boomy after adding a bass module
Lower the Bass Module output first, then reassess the Soundbar bass control. Also check whether the module or soundbar is placed in a corner or against a vibrating cabinet. Rerun CustomTune after moving either unit.
The sound is harsh after improving clarity
Undo the latest treble or SpeechClarity increase, listen again, and keep the control that solved the original problem at the smallest effective value. Raising several high-frequency controls at once is more likely to expose sibilance than to improve every programme.
Optional hardware and what it changes
The Bose Soundbar Wall Bracket is an installation accessory, not a sound mode. A Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer adds independently adjustable low-frequency output, while a compatible pair of Lifestyle Ultra Speakers can expand wraparound coverage. None is necessary to access the app’s dialogue, tone, equalization, surround or height controls, and Bose does not publish a single setting that assumes any of these additions.
For the most consistent result, establish the HDMI path and placement, run CustomTune, then adjust SpeechClarity for speech, bass and treble in small increments, and finally set surround and height for the programme you are watching or hearing. Treat those values as room- and source-dependent listening choices rather than fixed Bose presets.
