BOOX describes these as a trade-off: display quality ranks Regal above HD above Speed, while refresh speed ranks Speed above HD above Regal. Those are qualitative recommendations from BOOX, not laboratory speed measurements. Your available controls can also differ by device, color or monochrome screen, and app.
The short answer: match the mode to motion and image quality
Refresh mode controls how an E Ink display redraws its pixels. A mode that redraws more aggressively feels more responsive during scrolling, but it may sacrifice some image quality. A quality-oriented mode gives pages and illustrations a cleaner appearance, but page transitions and moving content can feel slower.

| Mode | BOOX’s qualitative position | Best starting use | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regal | Highest display quality; slowest of the three | General reading, comics, manga, and image-rich documents when ghosting or image quality is the priority | Less responsive for rapid scrolling and other moving content |
| HD | Middle display quality and middle refresh speed; described as the system default for books and static content | Novels, articles, PDFs, and other mostly static pages | Not as clean as Regal for demanding images and not as quick as Speed for heavy scrolling |
| Speed | Fastest refresh; lowest display-quality position in BOOX’s comparison | Websites, social media, scrolling-heavy apps, and video | Some reduction in visual quality compared with HD or Regal |
Think of HD as the practical everyday setting, then move toward Regal or Speed when a specific problem appears. If pages leave visible remnants of earlier content, try Regal or perform a manual full refresh. If a page, feed, or video feels sluggish, try Speed.

What each BOOX mode actually prioritizes
Regal: cleaner reading and reduced ghosting
Regal is BOOX’s quality-first option. BOOX describes it as suitable for general reading and as a way to reduce ghosting while preserving good visual quality. Ghosting is the visible remnant of earlier content that remains after a page or image changes; it is a normal characteristic of E Ink rather than proof that the panel is defective.

Regal is especially sensible when a document contains illustrations, shaded diagrams, manga panels, or comic artwork. BOOX specifically cites color illustrations in manga and comics, along with image-rich documents, as situations where Regal can help. Choose it when a clean page matters more than the fastest transition between pages.
HD: the balanced, static-content choice
HD is the sensible first setting for a device used mainly for books and other static pages. BOOX calls it the system default for books and static content and places it between Regal and Speed for both quality and responsiveness.
For novels, news articles, study notes, and ordinary PDF pages, HD normally provides a good balance: text remains crisp without committing to Regal’s slower behavior. It is also a useful baseline for comparing the other modes on your own device. If you notice distracting remnants, move to Regal; if you need faster movement, move to Speed.
Speed: responsiveness for moving screens
Speed gives up some display quality to redraw more quickly. BOOX explicitly recommends it for browsing websites, social media, and apps that require frequent scrolling. It is also BOOX’s stated choice for watching videos on its general refresh-mode page.
Speed is not a promise of smooth video on every BOOX model. E Ink panels, device processors, operating-system versions, and individual apps all affect playback. Treat Speed as the appropriate starting mode for dynamic content, then judge whether the result is usable on your specific device.
Choosing a mode for the way you read
Mostly text: start with HD
Set HD first if your sessions consist mainly of novels, web articles with little animation, or static documents. It is the mode BOOX positions as the default for books and provides a middle ground between visual cleanliness and page-transition speed.
Switch to Regal if you are particularly sensitive to remnants from prior pages or if the page includes enough shading and artwork that HD looks untidy. Switch to Speed only when the reading app itself involves frequent movement, such as a continuously scrolling feed.
Comics, manga, and illustrated documents: try Regal
Image-heavy pages expose ghosting and uneven gradients more readily than plain text. Regal is the appropriate first experiment for comics, manga, illustrated textbooks, and documents with photographs or diagrams. In NeoReader and in supported third-party apps, HD and Regal may also expose Image Smoothing. BOOX says this option improves image gradients and reduces mottling; availability depends on the app and model.

- Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
- Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.
Image Smoothing is separate from the basic choice of Regal, HD, or Speed. If the control is not shown in your app, use the modes that the app does provide rather than assuming the feature is missing from the hardware.
Long PDFs and mixed pages: decide what dominates
A PDF that is mostly selectable text behaves like a static book, so HD is a reasonable default. A PDF filled with full-page scans, color charts, or illustrations may benefit from Regal. If you are rapidly panning around a large page, Speed can make navigation feel more immediate, at the cost of a less polished image.
Choosing a mode for browsing and social apps
Use Speed when the main action is moving the screen: scrolling a website, flicking through a social feed, navigating menus, or switching quickly between app views. BOOX names web browsing, social media, and scrolling-heavy applications as Speed use cases because these tasks demand frequent redraws.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen you stop scrolling and read a static article, HD can look cleaner. Some BOOX software exposes refresh controls per app, while other models provide a broader system control. If the mode appears to change when you move between NeoReader, a system app, and a third-party app, that is expected behavior under BOOX’s model- and app-dependent design.
Choosing a mode for video
For video, begin with Speed. It is the mode BOOX specifically names for watching videos. Speed gives the display the best chance of keeping up with changing frames, but the result depends on the particular BOOX model, the video application, resolution, and the amount of motion in the clip.
Do not treat a poor video result as evidence that another general refresh mode will make the panel behave like a conventional LCD. If playback is acceptable but the surrounding controls look rough, you can test HD for menus or static captions, then return to Speed when the moving picture starts. The useful decision is whether responsiveness or a cleaner still image matters at that moment.
Why your controls may not match another BOOX device
BOOX says refresh settings differ slightly between monochrome and color devices and can change according to whether you are using NeoReader, a system application, or a third-party app. The EinkWise interface can also vary by model. As a result, one reader may see all three modes while another sees a different arrangement of controls or additional app-level options.

How to deal with ghosting
Understand what is normal
Ghosting is a faint remnant of a previous screen state. BOOX’s E Ink explanation describes it as a normal aspect of the technology. A small amount can appear even when the device is operating correctly, especially after many interactions without a complete redraw.
Trigger a manual Full Refresh
When remnants accumulate, use a manual Full Refresh if your model provides it. BOOX documents several possible access points:
- the Control Center;
- the Navigation Ball;
- bottom-gesture controls; or
- the Navigation Bar.
The exact Navigation Ball controls vary by device, so follow the labels and buttons shown on your model rather than relying on a path from a different BOOX product. A full refresh redraws the screen completely and is the direct remedy when ordinary mode changes have not cleared the remnants.
Adjust automatic full-refresh frequency
BOOX says the frequency of full refreshes can be configured in Display Settings on supported devices. Allowing more interactions between full refreshes can let more ghosting accumulate; refreshing more often can keep the screen cleaner. If you dislike how often the display performs a full refresh, inspect Display Settings for the frequency control and choose the level that fits your tolerance for ghosting and interruptions.
Color-device and third-party-app troubleshooting
For color E Ink tablets showing ghosting in third-party apps, BOOX’s troubleshooting guidance recommends enabling a Full Refresh control and using Speed refresh mode. This is vendor guidance for that situation, not a guarantee that Speed eliminates ghosting in every app. If the problem remains, perform a manual Full Refresh and check whether the app offers its own refresh or image-smoothing controls.
Do not confuse tablet refresh modes with BOOX Mira presets
BOOX Mira is monitor software, not the general refresh-mode menu on a BOOX reading tablet. Its presets use different names and are designed around computer-monitor tasks:
| Mira preset | BOOX’s stated purpose |
|---|---|
| Speed | Daily computer use and browsing |
| Text | Typing |
| Image | Viewing images |
| Video | Dynamic playback such as videos and online courses |
Mira’s separate Video preset should not be presented as a fourth general refresh mode for BOOX e-readers or tablets. When discussing a reading device, the relevant three-way choice is Regal, HD, or Speed; when discussing the Mira app, use its own presets.

A practical decision process
- Identify the dominant activity. Static text points to HD, image-rich reading points to Regal, and scrolling or video points to Speed.
- Check the visual problem. If the screen looks clean but movement is slow, try Speed. If movement is adequate but remnants or gradients are distracting, try Regal or enable Image Smoothing where available.
- Test inside the problem app. BOOX settings can differ between NeoReader, system apps, and third-party apps, so make the change where the issue occurs.
- Use a Full Refresh when remnants persist. Find the control in Control Center, Navigation Ball, bottom gestures, or Navigation Bar, depending on the model.
- Fine-tune automatic refresh behavior. If your device exposes the option, adjust full-refresh frequency under Display Settings.
What BOOX’s ranking does—and does not—tell you
BOOX publishes an ordinal comparison rather than measured timing figures: Display Quality: Regal > HD > Speed and Refresh Speed: Speed > HD > Regal. No named study, quantified performance statistic, or laboratory speed measurement accompanies that guidance. The symbols communicate relative priorities within BOOX’s own explanation, not a claim that one mode is a fixed number of milliseconds faster or that every model will look identical.
That is why the best setting is contextual. HD is the useful default for ordinary reading, Regal is the quality-and-ghosting choice, and Speed is the responsiveness choice. Model, screen type, app, and your tolerance for visual artifacts determine the final preference.
