Which Bambu Lab A2L Settings Should You Change Before Printing?

For a first or routine print, change very little. Complete the A2L’s guided initialization calibration, then verify that Bambu Studio names the printer, nozzle, build plate and filament you actually have installed. Keep the supplied process profile, allow the heatbed preconditioning and automatic bed leveling to finish, and start with a simple model. The settings that matter before printing are hardware and material matches; speed, temperature and flow should remain at their profile values until a specific print problem gives you a reason to investigate.

The short pre-print answer

The A2L is designed to establish its baseline through the startup calibration routine and Bambu Studio’s ready-to-use profiles. Before pressing Print, perform these checks in order:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Finish initialization calibration. Do not interrupt the guided startup sequence.
  2. Select the correct printer in Bambu Studio. Make sure the project is configured for an A2L, not another printer in your account or machine list.
  3. Match the nozzle selection to the installed nozzle. The A2L supports 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm nozzles.
  4. Match the build-plate profile to the plate on the bed. The listed plate families are Textured PEI, Engineering and Cool Plate SuperTack.
  5. Match the filament profile to the loaded spool. The A2L specification lists PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA; carbon-fiber PLA and PETG require a hardened-steel nozzle.
  6. Keep the stock process profile for the first attempt. Do not change speed, flow or temperature merely because a setting is available.
  7. Let thermal preparation and leveling complete. The documented A2L behavior holds the heatbed at its target before automatic bed leveling.

These checks prevent the most avoidable failures. They do not guarantee a successful print, because model geometry, filament condition, adhesion and other factors still affect the result.

Complete the A2L’s initialization calibration

What to do during first setup

Use the printer’s guided startup flow and allow its initialization calibration to run to completion. The official first-print guide places preparation and initialization calibration before the heatbed check and model launch. Keep the machine available for the full routine rather than starting a job while calibration is pending.

Calibration establishes the printer’s starting reference for the automated checks it performs later. Treat it as a prerequisite, not an optional quality tweak. If the printer asks you to repeat or resume initialization, complete that request before troubleshooting slicer settings.

Check the heatbed before loading a job

Confirm that the intended plate is installed and seated as the printer expects. A plate that is physically different from the one selected in the slicer can affect the first layer even when the model and filament are correct. The A2L specification lists a maximum heatbed temperature of 80°C; that is a hardware limit, not a universal temperature you should enter for every material.

Match Bambu Studio to the hardware on the printer

The most important “settings changes” are selections that must agree with reality. Compare the project configuration with the printer before slicing.

Nozzle diameter

Choose the diameter installed in the toolhead, not the diameter you intend to install later. The A2L supports four diameters: 0.2 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm. A mismatch can produce incorrect extrusion assumptions, unexpected wall dimensions or a job that is sliced for hardware you do not have.

If you change nozzles between prints, update the printer or project selection before slicing the next model. Do not rely on memory or on the diameter printed on a spare part; verify the part currently fitted to the machine.

Build-plate type

Select the profile corresponding to the installed surface: Textured PEI, Engineering or Cool Plate SuperTack. “The plate that came with the printer” is not a sufficient selection because the A2L supports multiple plate families. The physical surface and the software choice need to agree for the first layer.

Filament source and material

Check both where the filament is loaded and what it is made from. The guide’s setup flow accommodates filament supplied through AMS Lite or an external spool. In Bambu Studio, select the material profile that matches that loaded filament rather than a similar-looking color or a previously used spool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listed suitable materials are PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA. PLA-CF and PETG-CF are a special case: the manufacturer specifies a hardened-steel nozzle for those carbon-fiber-filled materials. Confirm the nozzle requirement before slicing; changing a software profile cannot make an unsuitable nozzle safe for abrasive filament.

Why the supplied process profile should be your baseline

Bambu Lab describes its Bambu Studio profiles as ready-to-use combinations for its printer and filament combinations. For a first print, that profile is more useful than a collection of speculative “optimized” values because it gives you a known starting point tied to the selected hardware and material.

Setting category Before the first print When to investigate it
Speed Leave the supplied value unchanged After identifying a quality, strength or time problem that the stock profile cannot meet
Flow or extrusion Leave the supplied value unchanged Only after checking nozzle, filament profile and mechanical causes of under- or over-extrusion
Temperature Use the selected material profile When the filament manufacturer’s requirements or a repeatable symptom justify a controlled change
Layer and wall process values Use the supplied process preset When the model’s strength, surface or detail requirement calls for a deliberate profile change

There is no documented universal A2L temperature, speed or flow override that every user should enter before printing. Changing several advanced values at once removes the baseline that helps you diagnose a problem. If a later print shows a symptom, change one relevant variable at a time and record what changed.

Let heatbed preconditioning and automatic leveling finish

What the A2L feature does

Bambu Studio release notes describe a model-specific behavior: the A2L holds the heatbed at its target temperature before automatic bed leveling “to help ensure a consistent first layer.” The bed edges may take longer to reach a stable temperature than the center, so starting leveling early defeats the purpose of the sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the printer begins this preparation, wait for the full heatbed hold and leveling cycle. Do not cancel it because the displayed temperature appears close to the target. The process is intended to let the surface settle before the measurements used for the first layer.

Firmware and software qualification

The release notes identify firmware 01.01.01.00 or later as the minimum for the described A2L preconditioning feature. This threshold applies to that documented behavior, not to every A2L function forever; later firmware or Bambu Studio versions can change requirements and prompts. Check the versions installed on your printer and computer and follow the update or compatibility message shown by the software.

If your installation does not offer the described hold-before-leveling behavior, do not invent a manual substitute or assume that another printer’s procedure applies. Verify the firmware and Bambu Studio version first, then use the current on-screen workflow.

A practical first-print sequence

  1. Prepare the machine. Install the desired nozzle and build plate, make sure the bed is ready for the material, and load one known filament through AMS Lite or the external spool position.
  2. Run initialization. Follow the A2L startup prompts and wait for initialization calibration to finish.
  3. Open the project in Bambu Studio. Select the A2L printer profile and confirm that it is the target machine.
  4. Verify the nozzle. Compare the selected 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 mm option with the nozzle physically installed.
  5. Verify the plate. Select Textured PEI, Engineering or Cool Plate SuperTack according to the plate on the bed.
  6. Verify the filament. Choose the profile for the material actually loaded. For PLA-CF or PETG-CF, confirm that a hardened-steel nozzle is installed.
  7. Keep the process preset. Do not change speed, flow, temperature or other advanced values without a specific reason.
  8. Choose a simple model. Use a straightforward test object and one material or color while validating the setup.
  9. Slice and review the job. Look for a last-minute mismatch in printer, plate, nozzle or filament before sending it.
  10. Start the print and wait. Allow heatbed preconditioning and automatic bed leveling to complete; observe the first layer rather than interrupting the routine.

What to change when a print has a specific problem

The first layer looks wrong

Start by checking the selected plate, the plate actually installed, the nozzle selection and whether initialization and automatic leveling completed. Also confirm that the heatbed preconditioning cycle was allowed to finish. These checks address setup mismatches without altering a process value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extrusion appears inconsistent

Verify that the selected filament profile matches the loaded spool and that the selected nozzle diameter matches the installed nozzle. If the material is PLA-CF or PETG-CF, check the hardened-steel requirement. Only after those checks should you investigate a flow or temperature change, and then change one variable at a time.

The job is unexpectedly slow or detailed

Confirm that the project did not switch to a different nozzle profile. A 0.2 mm nozzle and a 0.8 mm nozzle serve different detail and throughput goals, so the selected diameter should reflect the hardware and the intended result. Do not compensate by changing speed before correcting a profile mismatch.

The printer pauses during preparation

A pause while the bed reaches a stable target can be part of the A2L’s documented preconditioning sequence, especially near the bed edge. Check the firmware and Bambu Studio versions if the sequence behaves differently from the prompts or release-note description. Do not skip leveling to save time on a first print.

Settings that are not universal A2L requirements

The A2L’s 80°C maximum heatbed temperature is a specification, not a command to set the bed to 80°C. Likewise, the existence of four supported nozzle diameters does not mean you should select the largest or smallest one before every job. Material profiles, plate profiles and process presets are conditional on the physical setup and the model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also no evidence that a custom speed, flow or temperature setting is required for a normal first print. A reliable workflow is to preserve the supplied profile, observe the result, identify a repeatable symptom and then make a targeted adjustment supported by that symptom and the material’s requirements.

Final pre-print checklist

  • Initialization calibration completed without interruption.
  • A2L is selected as the printer in Bambu Studio.
  • Selected nozzle is the installed 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 mm nozzle.
  • Selected plate matches the installed Textured PEI, Engineering or Cool Plate SuperTack surface.
  • Selected filament matches the spool loaded from AMS Lite or the external spool position.
  • PLA-CF or PETG-CF is used only with a hardened-steel nozzle.
  • Supplied process profile remains unchanged for the baseline print.
  • Firmware and Bambu Studio meet the requirements shown by the software; firmware 01.01.01.00 or later is identified for the documented A2L preconditioning feature.
  • Heatbed preconditioning and automatic bed leveling are allowed to finish.
  • The first test uses a simple model and one material or color.

In practice, the best A2L “tuning” before printing is accurate selection, not aggressive optimization. Once the machine, plate, nozzle and filament agree with Bambu Studio, the stock profile and the printer’s calibration routines provide the appropriate baseline for evaluating the first layer and deciding whether any later change is warranted.
