Which Audio Settings Should You Change on a Sony BRAVIA Theatre System for Movies and TV?

Start with the sound mode or sound field that fits the program, then change only the control that solves a specific problem. Use a supported voice-enhancement feature when dialogue is difficult to understand. Change A/V Sync only when sound and picture are out of alignment. Sony does not provide one universally best recipe: menu names, available effects and automatic behavior vary by BRAVIA TV, BRAVIA Theatre model, country, software, and connected source.

Start with the right sound mode or sound field

The sound mode is the best first adjustment because it changes how the system processes the entire soundtrack. Select the mode or sound field intended for the type of program you are watching, then listen for a few minutes before changing other controls. A movie, a live broadcast and a dialogue-heavy television program can be mixed differently, so a setting that sounds pleasing for one may make another seem unnatural.

There is no Sony setting that is objectively best for every film and television show. The useful choice is the one that preserves the content’s intended balance for your room and listening position. If your system offers several modes, compare them at the same volume with a familiar scene containing both speech and effects. Pick the mode that gives you clear voices without making music, ambience or effects harsh.

When automatic mode switching does not work

A compatible BRAVIA TV and audio system may still fail to change the audio device’s mode automatically, even when BRAVIA Sync is compatible and Sound Mode Sync is enabled. In that case, select the mode manually from the audio system’s device menu or the TV’s Sync Menu.

  • EXPAND YOUR SURROUND SOUND: Expand the cinematic experience with optional wireless subwoofer (SW3/SA-SW5) and rear speakers (RS3R/RS5).

Before treating the failure as a sound-quality problem, check three connections and settings:

  • Confirm that the TV and Theatre system are compatible with the relevant BRAVIA Sync functions.
  • Make sure BRAVIA Sync or Control for HDMI is enabled on the TV and audio system.
  • Check that Sound Mode Sync is turned on, then try manual mode selection if automatic switching still fails.

Automatic switching is a convenience, not a requirement for correct audio. Manual selection is the practical fallback when the TV, soundbar and source do not exchange mode information reliably.

Improve dialogue only when voices are hard to understand

If music and effects sound fine but speech is buried, look for a voice-focused feature rather than immediately raising the overall volume. Sony calls one such feature Voice Zoom. It is available only with selected BRAVIA TV and Theatre combinations, so its absence does not indicate a fault.

Check compatibility before looking for Voice Zoom

Sony’s compatibility information lists Voice Zoom support for particular TV generations and Theatre systems. The listed Theatre products include BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, Bar 6, Bar 5, Theatre Trio, Theatre Quad and Theatre System 6 for the relevant feature. That list does not mean every pairing of those products supports Voice Zoom; the exact TV model, Theatre model, region and software still matter.

  • EXPAND YOUR SURROUND SOUND: Expand the cinematic experience with optional wireless subwoofer (SW3/SA-SW5) and rear speakers (RS3R/RS5).

Use the Help Guide for your exact TV and audio system to confirm the feature. If Voice Zoom is supported, increase it gradually while listening to speech. Too much voice emphasis can make dialogue sound detached from the rest of the mix or make background sound less natural. If the control is not present, do not assume that another similarly named setting has the same function.

When a voice feature is unavailable

Keep the selected sound mode, speaker placement and listening level consistent while diagnosing dialogue. A missing Voice Zoom control cannot be fixed by changing A/V Sync, because sync changes timing rather than speech balance. Also avoid repeatedly switching processing effects while deciding whether voices are clearer; change one setting, replay the same scene and compare.

Use A/V Sync only for a timing problem

A/V Sync is the setting to change when the sound leads or trails the picture. It is not a dialogue-enhancement control and should not be adjusted simply because voices are quiet. Start with Auto when it is available. If the mismatch remains, test Off and On as separate alternatives and keep the option that makes speech and lip movement line up.

What Auto means on supported systems

For the current BRAVIA Theatre products in Sony’s compatibility guidance, the TV adjusts audio and video timing when A/V Sync is set to Auto. The supported list includes:

BRAVIA Theatre System 6 TV adjusts audio and video timing when A/V Sync is Auto
BRAVIA Theatre Quad TV adjusts audio and video timing when A/V Sync is Auto

For other audio systems, Sony describes Auto as applying a fixed adjustment equivalent to On rather than the same TV-controlled timing behavior. That distinction is why an Auto setting can behave differently on two systems that use the same TV.

A practical sync procedure

  1. Play a scene with a clear view of a speaker’s mouth and a sharp consonant or handclap.
  2. Open the TV or Theatre audio settings and locate A/V Sync. Start at Auto if the option is available.
  3. If the sound is still early or late, test Off and then On. Wait for the change to take effect before judging it.
  4. Keep the option that aligns the voice with the picture, and do not alter other processing controls at the same time.
  5. If the delay changes between built-in TV apps and an external player, troubleshoot each signal path separately; the source and the TV may be introducing different processing delays.

Output settings to check when sync persists

Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends setting eARC to Auto and trying pass-through, or prioritizing pass-through, for digital audio output. The exact labels and menu location depend on the BRAVIA model. Pass-through can reduce an extra processing step by sending the source audio to the Theatre system for decoding, but it can also change which formats or TV-processing features are available. Make one change at a time and retest the same scene.

If the mismatch continues, Sony recommends connecting a source device directly to the home-theater system or soundbar by HDMI when the Theatre system has an HDMI input. This bypasses the TV as an intermediate audio path and can identify whether the delay originates in the TV output chain.

Disable specific processing only as a sync troubleshooting step

Sony identifies certain sound-processing features that can contribute to timing problems on particular systems. These are not general recommendations for better movie sound. Disable them temporarily only when you are troubleshooting an audio-video mismatch, then re-enable them if they are not the cause.

After disabling the applicable processing setting, replay the same content and compare lip synchronization. If there is no improvement, restore the setting and continue with A/V Sync, eARC, pass-through or the HDMI connection checks. Do not generalize the DSEE troubleshooting step to a model that is not in the applicable group.

Configure the TV’s audio output around the Theatre system

The TV’s output mode can be as important as the Theatre system’s sound mode. When sync or format problems appear, review the TV’s digital audio output, eARC and pass-through controls together rather than changing a single option repeatedly.

  • eARC: Use Auto when following Sony’s sync troubleshooting guidance and when both devices support the feature.
  • Digital audio output: Test pass-through or a pass-through-priority option when Sony’s guidance points to output processing as the source of delay.
  • Connection route: If the Theatre system has an HDMI input, connect an external source directly to it when routing through the TV continues to produce delay.

These controls can alter the formats the TV decodes, forwards or hands to the audio system. Therefore, a change that fixes timing may also change the system’s processing path. Record the original setting before testing so you can return to it if the result is worse.

Separate movie adjustments from television troubleshooting

For movies

Choose the sound mode or field intended for the movie, then check whether the front, center or dialogue presentation is intelligible at a comfortable volume. If voices are clear, leave dialogue processing and A/V Sync alone. If voices are difficult to understand, verify Voice Zoom compatibility before searching for another effect. If lip movement and sound disagree, move to the A/V Sync procedure rather than changing the movie mode repeatedly.

For television programs and live content

Television sources can switch between studio speech, commercials, music and live broadcasts with different mixes. Select a suitable mode for the program and make a decision using the segment you watch most. A mode change cannot correct a source that is itself delayed; use A/V Sync when the timing error is visible. If only one external source is affected, compare its direct HDMI connection with the TV-routed connection.

Do not expect the same controls or effect names on every BRAVIA Theatre system. Sony states that supported settings vary with the model, country, TV configuration and connected device.

What to do when a setting is missing

  1. Identify the exact BRAVIA TV model, Theatre model, connected source and connection type.
  2. Open the model-specific Help Guide and search for the setting name, including alternate labels such as A/V Sync, Sound Mode Sync, eARC or Digital audio output.
  3. Check that the TV and Theatre software is current for your region.
  4. Confirm that the feature is supported for that exact TV-and-Theatre combination; compatibility for one generation does not establish compatibility for another.
  5. If the control is still absent, use the available sound mode and the basic sync/output controls rather than forcing an unsupported menu path.

A missing menu item can be normal regional or model variation. It is not evidence that the system is malfunctioning.

A concise adjustment checklist

  • Start with the program-appropriate sound mode or sound field.
  • Listen before changing additional processing.
  • Use Voice Zoom only after confirming exact-model compatibility and only when dialogue needs help.
  • Set A/V Sync to Auto first when supported; test Off and On only when sound and picture are misaligned.
  • For persistent delay, check eARC, pass-through and the source-to-Theatre HDMI route.
  • Temporarily disable DSEE Ultimate or DSEE only for the model-specific sync troubleshooting cases Sony lists.
  • Use the exact model’s Help Guide when a menu or effect is missing.

The most reliable setup is therefore selective: choose the mode that suits the program, apply dialogue enhancement only when the compatible feature solves a real speech problem, and reserve timing and output changes for demonstrable synchronization issues.
