There is not enough comparable, current evidence here to name a verified shortlist of ASX shares that are both high quality and reasonably priced. CAR Group (ASX:CAR) offers a useful case study: its FY25 results showed strong cash conversion, while a dated October 2026 valuation snapshot still needs to be tested against normalized earnings, future growth and downside risks. The sound approach is to assess business quality separately from share price, then compare candidates using the same evidence and assumptions.

What does “quality at a reasonable price” mean?

Quality describes the business; reasonable price describes what an investor pays for its future cash flows. A strong brand or a low valuation multiple alone settles neither question. A durable company can be overpriced, while an apparently cheap share can reflect weakening earnings, debt or competitive pressure.

For an ASX screening process, judge both dimensions independently. Assess whether the business can sustain attractive economics, then ask whether the current price leaves an adequate margin for uncertainty. The conclusion depends on estimates of future performance, so it is a framework for analysis—not a guaranteed buy list or personal financial advice.

Business quality

Look for durable customer demand and a defensible competitive position; earnings that translate into cash; a balance sheet able to withstand a downturn; and capable governance and execution. Brand recognition can be relevant, but it is not a substitute for evidence on these factors.

Price and valuation

Use more than one valuation lens, such as price-to-earnings, enterprise value to EBITDA and price-to-free-cash-flow. Compare the current price with normalized earnings and cash flow rather than assuming the latest year is a permanent run rate. Make growth, margin and discount-rate assumptions explicit: a valuation that looks attractive only under optimistic assumptions may not be reasonable.

What CAR Group reported for FY25

CAR Group’s issuer release of 11 August 2025 covers the year ended 30 June 2025. The company reported both pro forma and statutory-style reported measures; they should not be conflated. Its pro forma figures exclude the Australian Tyres business from both periods.

FY25 measure CAR Group reported result Basis and context
Pro forma revenue A$1,144 million, up 12% Growth on a constant-currency basis; Australian Tyres excluded from both periods.
Pro forma EBITDA A$641 million, up 12% Growth on a constant-currency basis; pro forma EBITDA margin was 56%.
Reported revenue A$1,184 million, up 8% Growth in Australian dollars.
Reported EBITDA A$620 million, up 9% Company-reported measure.
Reported NPAT A$275 million, up 10% Company-reported measure.
EBITDA conversion to operating cash flow 98% FY25 company-reported conversion.
Final dividend 41.5 cents per share 40% franked; up 8% on the prior corresponding period.

CAR said carsales maintained Australian market leadership and grew across key segments. That is the company’s description of its performance, not an independent assessment of future competitive strength. The FY25 cash-conversion figure is a useful quality indicator, but one year cannot establish that conversion will persist through different trading conditions.

What later FY26 coverage says—and what it does not prove

A 2026 Morningstar article reports that CAR Group’s FY26 pro forma EBITDA increased 12% in constant currency to A$700 million, with revenue growth of 12% and flat margins. It also reports company guidance for slightly accelerating revenue growth in FY27 and EBITDA growth at an unchanged pace compared with FY26. These are secondary-source summaries; verify them against CAR Group’s FY26 primary results before relying on them.

Morningstar describes network effects and cost advantages in the Australian marketplace as strengths, and identifies Instant Offer and Carsales Select as possible ways to participate in more of the car-retailing value chain. Those are analyst assessments, not assured growth drivers. Adoption, customer response and execution determine whether newer products or potential take-rate expansion add durable earnings.

What CAR’s October 2026 valuation snapshot can tell you

StockAnalysis displayed CAR Group at A$22.80 at the close on 9 October 2026. Its page, last checked on 11 October 2026, showed the following ratios and attributed financial data to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Valuation measure Displayed value What to test
Trailing P/E 27.54 Whether historical earnings represent a sustainable base.
Forward P/E 19.56 The earnings forecast and assumptions behind it.
EV/EBITDA 16.93 Debt and cash adjustments as well as the durability of EBITDA.
Price/free cash flow 15.28 How free cash flow is defined and whether cash generation is repeatable.

These are volatile third-party figures, not an independent fair-value conclusion. Vendors can calculate ratios differently, and the snapshot does not establish that CAR is undervalued. A multiple that has fallen from an earlier level can still be too high if expected earnings are overstated or competitive economics weaken. Conversely, a higher multiple may be supportable if cash flows prove durable—but that must be demonstrated rather than assumed.

How to screen ASX shares on consistent evidence

Apply the same six checks to each candidate, using results and valuation inputs from comparable dates. The process helps separate a genuinely resilient business from a superficially attractive multiple.

1. Business durability and competitive position

Identify why customers stay, what alternatives they have and whether the company’s advantage can persist. For CAR, Morningstar’s view of marketplace network effects and cost advantages is a hypothesis to examine alongside company disclosures and competitive developments—not proof that the advantage is permanent.

2. Earnings and cash-flow quality

Compare reported earnings with operating cash flow over multiple periods. Investigate large gaps, one-off items and the cash needed to maintain or grow the business. CAR’s 98% FY25 EBITDA-to-operating-cash-flow conversion is positive evidence for that year, but it does not answer whether future cash conversion will match it.

3. Balance-sheet resilience

Review debt, cash, refinancing needs and the company’s ability to meet obligations if growth slows. The valuation snapshot above does not supply a balance-sheet analysis, so it cannot resolve this part of CAR’s investment case.

4. Governance and execution

Assess capital allocation, management delivery against guidance, incentives and material execution risks. In CAR’s case, expansion through newer products may create opportunity, but the adoption and execution uncertainty identified by Morningstar belongs in the risk assessment.

5. Valuation against normalized earnings and free cash flow

Check whether the earnings base is representative, reconcile different valuation measures and examine the forecasts driving forward ratios. A sound comparison should use consistent definitions and dates across companies; otherwise apparent differences can be artifacts of timing or calculation.

6. Sensitivity to growth and discount rates

Test how estimated value changes if growth is slower, margins are lower or the discount rate is higher. For CAR, stress-test weaker adoption of newer products as well as slower growth and lower margins. If the investment case works only when every assumption goes right, the price may offer little protection against error.

Are there other ASX candidates to investigate?

Morningstar’s 2026 market commentary names Endeavour Group, Spark New Zealand and Sonic Healthcare among selected Australian shares it views as undervalued and moat-rated. That makes them leads for further checking, not a verified, comparable shortlist. The information available here does not establish their current results, balance sheets or valuation assumptions well enough to rank or recommend them.

Before treating any name as a candidate, verify its latest issuer results, guidance and balance-sheet position, then apply the same dated valuation and downside tests used for CAR. The ASX results archive lists FY26 full-year and half-year materials as well as FY25 company materials; use issuer and exchange documents to confirm current figures. Since no source URLs are provided here, this article does not link to those materials.

How to reach a reasoned conclusion on CAR

  1. Confirm the financial base: compare CAR Group’s primary FY26 release with the FY25 issuer figures, keeping pro forma and reported measures distinct.
  2. Reconcile the price snapshot: check the market price and valuation ratios on the date of your analysis, and understand each vendor’s calculation and forecast basis.
  3. Normalize cash flows: assess whether earnings and free cash flow can be sustained, rather than extrapolating one reporting period.
  4. Model downside cases: lower growth and margins, account for slower adoption of newer offerings, and vary the discount rate.
  5. Compare alternatives consistently: run the same checks for other ASX companies before deciding whether CAR or any alternative offers the stronger prospective return for its risks.

On the evidence presented, CAR has some encouraging business and cash-conversion indicators, but a dated set of multiples and secondary FY26 coverage cannot establish that the share is fairly valued today. Nor does the available information support a rigorous ASX-wide list of shares meeting both quality and price criteria. The appropriate next step is verification and consistent, assumption-led comparison—not treating a screen, a moat label or a single ratio as a verdict.
