Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is the best all-around starting point in this ranking: it pairs a memorable lead with a vivid historical setting and naval exploration. For the strongest stealth-and-parkour experience, choose Assassin’s Creed Unity; for a vast role-playing adventure, choose Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
“Every game” needs a boundary. This is a subjective ranking of the 14 mainline original releases, from the first Assassin’s Creed through Assassin’s Creed Shadows. It excludes spin-offs, mobile and VR releases, the 2.5D Chronicles trilogy, standalone expansions, remasters and remakes. That scope matches Metacritic’s March 18, 2025 ranking of 14 original mainline titles, which also excluded spin-offs and remasters; its critic-score order is a useful comparison, not a verdict on what players will enjoy most. The order below weighs stealth and parkour, story and protagonist, historical world, combat and mission variety, exploration, pacing and technical friction. It is editorial judgment, not a score-based consensus. The series ranges from focused stealth-action adventures to large RPG-style worlds; Ubisoft’s series guide describes Origins as a major redesign, with an eagle companion, freer climbing and a more open combat system. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
Edward Kenway’s story and the Caribbean setting make this the series’ strongest overall package. Ship combat and exploration give it a distinctive rhythm, while its land-based stealth and missions keep it recognizably Assassin’s Creed. The naval focus will not suit everyone, but it gives the world a strong identity rather than simply making it larger.

Assassin’s Creed II
Ezio’s rise in Renaissance Italy remains one of the franchise’s most effective character arcs. The cities, conspiracies and assassination missions establish a compelling template for the series’ historical adventures. Its age shows in movement and combat, but the focused story gives it a pace that later, larger entries often leave behind.
-
Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
Continuing Ezio’s story in Rome, Brotherhood builds on the strengths of Assassin’s Creed II with a more cohesive city and the ability to recruit fellow Assassins. It is an especially strong choice for players who want urban stealth and a tight central campaign, though it has less of the novelty of its predecessor.
-
Assassin’s Creed Origins
Ancient Egypt gives Origins a striking setting, and Bayek is a compelling guide through a story about the beginnings of the Assassin Brotherhood. Its shift toward gear, levels and open combat revitalized the series, but also made stealth less central than in the earlier games. Ubisoft’s guide highlights the eagle companion, climbing changes and more open combat as part of that redesign.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Ezio’s final chapter brings his story together with Altaïr’s legacy, giving long-time players a satisfying sense of closure. Constantinople is a lively setting and the campaign is more concentrated than the later RPG entries. Its added systems do not all land equally well, but its emotional payoff lifts it above a merely competent sequel.

-
Assassin’s Creed Unity
For parkour through a dense historical city, Unity is one of the series’ most appealing entries. Revolutionary Paris rewards rooftop movement and offers elaborate interiors, while its assassination missions encourage planning. The story is less memorable than its setting, and technical friction at launch damaged its reputation; the experience can vary by platform and current state, so check recent platform-specific information before buying.
-
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Set in Japan, Shadows offers two protagonists and a contrast between stealth-oriented play and direct combat. That split makes it a useful modern entry for players who want both approaches, and its setting is a major draw. Its place here reflects the strengths of that design rather than a claim that it surpasses the series’ most focused stories.
-
Assassin’s Creed III
The American Revolution gives Connor’s story a broad historical canvas, and the frontier adds variety to the city environments. Its central conflict has weight, but the protagonist and slower opening can make the campaign harder to settle into. It is a worthwhile pick for players drawn to the period and its political upheaval.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Odyssey is the series’ most expansive myth-inflected RPG adventure here, with ancient Greece offering abundant exploration and a choice of protagonists. Its scale and combat can be absorbing, especially for players who enjoy building a character and tackling side activities. The trade-off is a long campaign and a looser connection to the older stealth-first formula.

SaleAssassin's Creed: The Rebel Collection - Nintendo Switch- Includes both Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, plus all single-player DLC.
- Become the most feared pirate in the Caribbean in Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag. Take part in an award-winning naval experience and explore a massive open world.
- Become the ultimate assassin hunter in Assassin’s Creed Rogue, and play as a Templar for the first time in franchise history.
- Additional bonus content: Black Beard: The Lost Journal (pp. 1– 55) and Assassin’s Creed: Awakening Volumes 1 & 2.
- Experience enhanced features like handheld mode, HD Rumble, a touch screen interface, and motion control aiming.
-
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
Victorian London is a strong playground for Jacob and Evie Frye, whose contrasting personalities give the campaign variety. Traversal tools make it easy to move around the city, though they reduce some of the challenge and satisfaction of mastering parkour. The result is enjoyable and brisk, but less distinctive than the strongest entries.
-
Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Mirage returns to a more compact city and emphasizes stealth, investigations and assassinations over RPG-scale exploration. That focus makes it a natural choice for players who miss the older structure. Its tighter scope is also a limit: it offers less character development and world-spanning variety than the top-ranked games.
-
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Viking-era England provides a large world, settlement building and lengthy adventures with Eivor. The scale can be appealing if you want dozens of hours of quests and exploration, but it can also dilute the main story. Metacritic’s 2025 ranking specifically noted fatigue with three very long RPG-oriented games arriving in a short period; that concern weighs against Valhalla here.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Playing as a former Assassin who joins the Templars gives Rogue a welcome perspective shift, and its North Atlantic setting supports a solid naval adventure. It reuses much of the preceding games’ structure, however, so its most interesting idea does not always translate into a fully distinct experience.

-
Assassin’s Creed
The original game established Altaïr, the Third Crusade setting and the target-investigation-to-assassination loop that shaped the series. That structure still has a clear appeal, but repeated mission patterns and limited variety make it the least inviting entry for many new players. Its historical importance is not the same as its current playability.
Which Assassin’s Creed should you play first?
- Best all-around choice: Black Flag, for a strong lead, a memorable setting and varied naval exploration.
- Best for stealth and parkour: Unity for dense-city movement, or Mirage for a more focused stealth campaign.
- Best story arc: Start with Assassin’s Creed II, then continue through Brotherhood and Revelations to follow Ezio’s story.
- Best for a large RPG world: Odyssey for Greek exploration, or Origins for a more compact transition into the RPG format.
- Best for a recent setting and two play styles: Shadows, with its contrast between stealth and direct combat.
Why Assassin’s Creed rankings differ
The games are not all trying to do the same thing. Early entries put more emphasis on stealth, parkour and targeted assassinations; the later RPG-style games expand character progression, combat and exploration. A player who values tight missions may rank Mirage or Brotherhood above a larger adventure, while someone who wants a sprawling world may prefer Odyssey or Valhalla.
Critic-score rankings answer a different question from this list. Metacritic’s March 2025 article orders 14 mainline originals by Metascore, using the platform with the most critic reviews for each game. A broader GamesRadar+ editorial list ranks 24 entries, including spin-offs, and weighs factors such as setting, features and protagonists. Neither order is a universal measure of which game a particular player should choose. GamesRadar+’s broader editorial ranking

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a remake, not a new mainline original, so it is outside the ranked list above. TechRadar’s 2026 guide identifies it as the series’ most recent release and gives July 9, 2026 as its release date, describing it as a return to Edward Kenway and Caribbean naval combat. Older rankings that predate that release will not include it; platform and edition details should be checked for the specific version you intend to play. TechRadar’s current series guide
