Which Asian Games Medalists Qualify for South Korea’s Military-Service Exemption?

South Korean athletes who win Asian Games gold can qualify for military-service status as arts and sports personnel. In a team event, the athlete must have actually participated. Silver or bronze at the Asian Games is not enough. The benefit is not an automatic discharge: athletes apply, receive a recommendation from the culture minister, and must be assigned by the Military Manpower Administration.

What Asian Games result qualifies?

Article 68-11 of South Korea’s Enforcement Decree of the Military Service Act lists first place at the Asian Games as a qualifying sports achievement. That means gold qualifies; silver and bronze alone do not. The decree’s listed results also include placing third or higher at the Olympic Games, so the medal threshold differs between the two competitions. Read Article 68-11 of the Enforcement Decree.

Government legal guidance likewise identifies first place at the Asian Games as the qualifying result. It describes the eligible pool as people subject to active-duty enlistment or a supplemental-service call-up who are recommended by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. How does the rule apply to team events?

Winning gold as a team is not, by itself, sufficient for every athlete associated with that team. The decree’s team-event clause requires that the person actually participated in the competition. The legal text sets the threshold; news reports of individual cases illustrate how it has been applied, but do not replace that rule.

Golf at the 2026 Asian Games

The Associated Press reported that South Korean golfer Tom Kim (Kim Joo-hyung) won men’s singles gold at the 2026 Asian Games and received the benefit. South Korea did not win the golf team event, and the report said teammate S.H. Kim did not receive the benefit through that team result. Associated Press report, October 3, 2026.

League of Legends at the 2022 Asian Games

The Associated Press reported that members of South Korea’s League of Legends team received the benefit after winning gold at the 2022 Asian Games. Lee Sang-hyeok, known as Faker, had played in earlier games but missed the final and was included. This reported example is consistent with the decree’s requirement of actual participation; the rule does not say an athlete must appear in the final specifically. Associated Press report on the esports team.

Is the exemption automatic?

No. “Exemption” is common shorthand, but the formal mechanism is assignment as arts and sports personnel, an alternative service classification. A qualifying result establishes eligibility to seek that classification; it does not mean a medal automatically extinguishes every military-service obligation.

  1. Apply: The athlete submits an application to the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism with evidence of the qualifying result, such as documentation confirming the competition outcome.
  2. Receive a recommendation: The decree directs the minister to notify the Commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration of the recommended list within 14 days after receiving the application.
  3. Be assigned: The Military Manpower Administration assigns arts and sports personnel to service in designated fields.

The decree version effective October 2, 2026, was amended by Presidential Decree No. 36728 on September 29, 2026. The government’s legal guidance cited here was current as of September 15, 2026.

How long is ordinary military service?

The Associated Press described service for most able-bodied South Korean men as “about 18 months” in its October 2026 report. That is an approximate contextual figure, not a universal duration and not the service period for arts and sports personnel. The cited sources do not establish a single service-duration figure that applies to every person in this classification.
