For most new players, unlock Gunsmith Level 1 first. It broadens your weapon-crafting options and is the most consistently useful early specialist upgrade. Choose Medical Lab first instead if healing supplies are limiting your raids, Utility if mobility and access tools define your routes, or Explosives if grenades are central to your loadout. There is no official, universally optimal order: your best first unlock depends on what you use, what materials you can gather, and whether you need Workshop recipes or in-raid crafting.
What the free Workbench already makes
ARC Raiders does not begin with an empty crafting system. The free Workbench covers a practical starter set, including basic weapons, several ammunition types, bandages, shield rechargers and a light impact grenade. That means your first specialist upgrade should solve a specific limitation rather than duplicate items you can already produce.

- Weapons: basic starter firearms are available without a specialist station.
- Ammunition: the Workbench supports several ammo types, so an early Gunsmith upgrade is about expanding choice and access rather than making every round from scratch.
- Sustain: bandages and shield rechargers provide baseline healing and protection.
- Explosives: a light impact grenade is available before the Explosives Station.
Station upgrades expand the catalog, but a station level alone does not guarantee every recipe. Some items also require a blueprint.

Default recommendation: Gunsmith Level 1
Gunsmith Level 1 is the strongest general-purpose first specialist upgrade because weapons affect every engagement and because it gives you more ways to turn recovered materials into a usable loadout. This is a practical recommendation, not a developer-ranked progression path or a measured “best value” result.

One current Workshop reference lists the upgrade at 20 Metal Parts and 30 Rubber Parts. Other guides report different component counts, so treat that figure as a reference rather than a permanent price. Open the live Gunsmith menu before farming materials or committing them; patch changes and platform versions can make third-party tables stale.
Choose Medical Lab first when sustain is your bottleneck
The Medical Lab deserves priority when you regularly leave raids because you ran out of healing, not because you lost a weapon fight. More medical-crafting access can let you convert scavenged materials into longer raid endurance and reduce the pressure to extract early. If your squad already carries sufficient healing but lacks firepower, Gunsmith remains the better first investment.
The exact current Medical Lab recipe list and level costs are not consistently published in the available references. Use the station panel in Speranza to confirm the prerequisite and the individual recipes you will actually use.

Choose Utility for mobility and access
Utility is a better first path for players whose routes depend on traversal, shortcuts or reaching elevated loot. The current Workshop reference places Zipline at Utility Level 2, so a first-level investment may be part of a longer mobility plan rather than an immediate Zipline unlock. October 2026 coverage of Nomadic Crafting also lists Zipline and Grappling Hook as field-crafting outputs, giving mobility-focused players another progression route to consider.
Choose Explosives for grenade-centered play
Explosives makes sense when you deliberately build around area damage, clearing groups or forcing enemies out of cover. It is not the universal starter choice because the Workbench already supplies a light impact grenade. The reference catalog lists Wolfpack among Level 3 crafts, which indicates a later specialization investment rather than a reason for every new player to rush the station.

Use this five-question test before spending materials
- What problem ends your raids? If it is weapon variety, favor Gunsmith. If it is running out of healing, favor Medical Lab. If it is blocked routes, favor Utility. If it is difficulty controlling groups, favor Explosives.
- How often will you use the output? A recipe is valuable when it appears in most of your loadouts, not merely because it is powerful on paper.
- What does the station and material investment delay? Compare the upgrade with the next item you would otherwise craft. Common materials may be more useful in a Refiner or for ammunition than in a speculative station level.
- Is the recipe actually available? Check whether the station level is sufficient or whether you also need a blueprint.
- Where does the unlock work? Workshop recipes are prepared in Speranza; Nomadic Crafting is designed for production during a raid. They solve different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
No reliable published value-per-material calculation establishes one universal winner. The sensible approach is to match the station to your play pattern and verify the live requirement in-game.

Blueprints: why a station level may not be enough
Blueprints are learned and consumed in Speranza. The community ARC Raiders Wiki describes the process as selecting “Learn and Consume” for the blueprint. It lists scavenging, trials, quests and projects as acquisition routes. Because that is a community-maintained reference rather than official documentation, use it as a guide and confirm the current wording in your own blueprint interface.

- Return to Speranza with the blueprint in your inventory.
- Open the blueprint or crafting interface and select Learn and Consume.
- Check the destination station and required station level after learning it.
- Confirm the live material cost in the station menu before spending components.
Learning a blueprint consumes it. Do not assume that finding a second copy will be necessary or that a blueprint automatically bypasses a station-level requirement.
Should you build the Refiner before pushing Gunsmith?
For players thinking beyond the first unlock, the Refiner can improve the station economy. A September progression guide recommends building the Refiner to convert common materials into components needed for later upgrades, then returning to Gunsmith progression. Another June guide proposes a different sequence. The disagreement reflects different assumptions about loot routes and play style, not a proven contradiction in the game.

Choose Refiner first when you repeatedly possess raw materials but lack the processed components required by station upgrades. Skip that detour when you already have the components for your chosen Gunsmith or Medical Lab level and can use the specialist recipes immediately.
Refiner recipes can change. A guide summarizing Embark Help Center and patch-note material specifically notes a recipe-level change in Patch Notes 1.2.0. Check the current Refiner panel rather than treating an old conversion table as permanent.

October 2026 progression changes: Research Bench and Nomadic Crafting
Research Bench and directed research
GamesRadar reported that the Frozen Trail update was adding Outposts and a Research Bench on October 8, 2026. The report describes research points as a way to choose some unlock targets instead of relying only on random blueprint discovery, attributing that explanation to executive producer Aleksander Grøndal.
The available reporting does not establish a complete authoritative list of costs, eligible targets or restrictions. If the Research Bench is present in your build, inspect its target list and point cost before changing your station plan. It may reduce the value of waiting for a particular random blueprint, but it does not automatically replace station-level requirements.
Nomadic Crafting during a raid
PC Gamer’s October 8, 2026 guide describes Nomadic Crafting as an expansion of earlier In-Round Crafting and Traveling Tinkerer Survival unlocks. It lists these field-crafting outputs:
- Shotgun Ammo
- Light Ammo
- Medium Ammo
- Heavy Ammo
- Grappling Hook
- Zipline
- Shrapnel Grenade
This matters when deciding between a Workshop station and a Survival investment. If your priority is producing ammunition or traversal tools after deployment, a Workshop upgrade may not be the fastest route. Because this is recent guide coverage rather than a full official patch reference, open the current Survival skill tooltip to verify availability and prerequisites.

Balanced solo player
- Use the free Workbench for starter weapons, available ammunition, bandages, shield rechargers and the light impact grenade.
- Unlock Gunsmith Level 1 after confirming its live cost.
- Build the Refiner next if processed components, rather than raw materials, are delaying upgrades.
- Return to Gunsmith or pivot to Medical Lab when your actual raid failures identify the need.
Healing-focused squad
- Keep using the Workbench for baseline supplies.
- Prioritize Medical Lab if healing shortages are causing failed extractions.
- Take Gunsmith after sustain is stable, unless your squad lacks a dependable weapon option.
Mobility-focused scavenger
- Check whether your current Survival skills can unlock Grappling Hook or Zipline through Nomadic Crafting.
- Invest in Utility when Workshop access better fits your planned routes.
- Remember that Zipline is listed at Utility Level 2 in the current reference, so budget for the additional level.
Explosives specialist
- Use the starter light impact grenade while collecting the components for a specialist path.
- Choose Explosives early only if grenades consistently determine your engagements.
- Treat Wolfpack as a later Level 3 objective, not an immediate first-station payoff.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Following an old cost table: station and Refiner recipes can change. Verify the live menu immediately before committing materials.
- Confusing a blueprint with an unlock: learning a blueprint does not necessarily remove a station-level prerequisite.
- Ignoring the free Workbench: spending scarce components on a duplicate starter capability delays the upgrade that solves your real bottleneck.
- Mixing Workshop and field progression: Nomadic Crafting and Survival skills address in-raid production; station upgrades address preparation in Speranza.
- Treating a guide’s route as official: published sequences differ, and official pages do not provide a complete permanent station-cost table. Use guides for rationale, then confirm the game’s current menus.
Bottom line for your first unlock
Start with Gunsmith Level 1 if you want the safest broadly useful choice. Move Medical Lab ahead of it when sustain is the reason raids fail; choose Utility when mobility is your defining advantage; choose Explosives only when grenade play is central. Before spending anything, compare the station cost, blueprint requirement, station level and whether a Survival/Nomadic Crafting unlock would solve the same problem more directly. The live ARC Raiders menus are the final authority, especially after the Frozen Trail, Research Bench and Nomadic Crafting changes in October 2026.
