Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: GrapheneOS does not make one universal list of blocked apps. Compatibility is decided app by app. Many applications work normally, including many that use Google Play services, when sandboxed Google Play is installed in the same user or work profile. Others lose a feature such as background notifications, or refuse to run because the developer’s integrity and anti-tampering checks reject the operating system.
GrapheneOS ships without Google apps and services, but it can install official Google Play releases as ordinary sandboxed applications. That design gives you control over which profiles receive Play services, while leaving the final compatibility decision to each app developer.

What “doesn’t work” means on GrapheneOS
Compatibility failures fall into three different groups, and the remedy depends on which group you are seeing:
| Observed behavior | Typical cause | What you can control |
|---|---|---|
| The app says Google Play services are missing or closes during setup. | Play services are not installed, are in a different profile, or cannot reach the network. | Install sandboxed Google Play in the app’s profile, check permissions and connectivity, then retry. |
| The app opens, but a feature such as background notifications is absent. | The developer implemented that feature only through Google Play services. | Provide Play services in the same profile and review battery settings; the app may still have a permanent limitation. |
| The app reports a rooted, uncertified or untrusted device. | An app-side integrity or anti-tampering policy rejects GrapheneOS. | Verify the configuration and report the exact warning. You cannot reliably repair a policy that intentionally blocks the operating system. |
| Android Auto will not install, connect or forward notifications. | It was installed from the wrong source, lacks its dedicated permissions, or does not have sandboxed Play. | Follow the GrapheneOS installation and permission path described below. |
| A previously working app fails immediately after an update. | A change in the app, GrapheneOS, Play components or device configuration. | Record versions and timing, then check current GrapheneOS release notes before changing settings. |
There is no published percentage of apps that work or fail, and no exhaustive, permanently current compatibility catalogue. An app report is meaningful only with its version, device, profile and GrapheneOS build.

How GrapheneOS handles Google Play
Google Play is optional on GrapheneOS. The operating system does not bundle Google Play services, the Play Store or other Google applications. Instead, the GrapheneOS App Store can install the official Play components into a user or work profile. They run as normal sandboxed apps rather than receiving the privileged integration they have on many stock Android installations.
This profile boundary is the most important detail in troubleshooting. An app in your personal profile cannot use Play services installed only in a work profile, and the reverse is also true. Installing Play in one profile does not make it globally available to every profile.
What sandboxing changes
- You choose which profile receives Google Play and which apps can access it.
- Applications that depend on Play services must be placed in the same profile as the Play installation.
- Some functions may need explicit network, notification, nearby-device or battery-related permissions.
- An app can still reject GrapheneOS even when Play services is correctly installed; sandboxing does not turn off the developer’s integrity checks.
Portable apps that use standard Android interfaces rather than a hard Play-services dependency generally retain their normal operation, including notifications. An app that implemented background delivery only through Play services may show notifications while open but not when running in the background.
App categories most likely to have problems
Apps with a hard Google Play services dependency
The clearest failure is a message such as “Google Play services are missing.” First determine whether that means the component is genuinely absent or merely invisible because it is in another profile. Install Google Play services and the Play Store from the GrapheneOS App Store in the profile where the affected app lives. Then verify that both the app and Play components are allowed to use the network.
Some apps check for Play services only at launch; others call it when you sign in, request a location, register a device or enable a particular feature. An app can therefore appear healthy until you reach one of those screens. A successful launch is not proof that every feature is available.
Apps with background notification limitations
GrapheneOS’s FAQ explains that apps which are not fully portable across Android implementations often omit standard background-notification support and implement it only through Google Play services. In practical terms, a message may arrive instantly while the app is open, yet remain delayed until you open it when Play services is absent or unavailable.

For a Play-dependent app, confirm the component is in the same profile, has network access and is not being unnecessarily restricted by battery optimization. The official GrapheneOS usage guidance includes a battery-optimization exception for Play services where background delivery requires it. This is not a general GrapheneOS notification defect: apps that use portable notification mechanisms can work without Play services, while others have made a narrower engineering choice.

Banking, authentication and other integrity-sensitive apps
Banking apps are a particularly problematic compatibility class because each provider chooses its own anti-tampering and integrity rules. One banking app may work with any GrapheneOS configuration; another may require sandboxed Play; a third may reject the device even after Play is correctly configured.
GrapheneOS is not Google-certified. An app that relies on certification-based checks, Play Integrity responses or a proprietary device-attestation policy can therefore display a rooted, modified, uncertified or otherwise untrusted-device warning. The warning does not necessarily mean the phone is rooted, and reinstalling the app cannot change a policy that explicitly excludes the operating system.
Do not try to defeat an app’s security checks. GrapheneOS documents that it does not attempt to bypass fragile checks that may break as developers improve them. Treat a clean configuration and an integrity rejection as separate facts: you can fix the former, but only the app developer can change the latter.
Android Auto
Android Auto has a specific supported setup on GrapheneOS. It is not installed through the Play Store or another app source. Use the GrapheneOS App Store, then configure it through the dedicated Sandboxed Google Play settings screen. The detailed procedure appears in its own section below because installation source and permissions determine most failures.
A step-by-step compatibility check
Work through these steps in order. Changing several variables at once makes it impossible to tell whether the failure was configuration, an app policy or an update regression.

- Capture the exact symptom. Write down the app or service name, version, the full error text and what happens immediately before failure. “Does not work” is not enough to distinguish a missing dependency from an integrity rejection.
- Record the platform. Note the phone model, GrapheneOS release or build and the date the problem began. If the issue followed an update, record both the old and current app or operating-system versions when available.
- Check the profile. Open the profile that contains the affected app. Confirm that Google Play services and, when needed, the Play Store are installed in that same profile. A Play installation in another user or work profile cannot satisfy the app.
- Use the supported installation source. Install Play components with the GrapheneOS App Store. For Android Auto, this source is required. For other apps, avoid drawing conclusions from a modified or repackaged build when the official release is available.
- Confirm network access. Play services and the affected app may both need network access for sign-in, licensing, device registration, push delivery or integrity queries. A blocked connection can look identical to a missing service.
- Review app permissions. Check the permissions relevant to the feature that fails, such as notifications, nearby devices, location or phone access. Grant only what the feature requires, and note any permission that the app refuses to request.
- Check battery handling for background work. If notifications or synchronization fail only when the app is closed, review battery optimization for the app and Play services. Apply the official guidance for an exception when the service requires persistent background delivery.
- Retry the failing action. Test the exact sign-in, notification, connection or payment flow again. Record whether the behavior changed and whether the failure is limited to one feature.
- Reinstall only after the profile and Play setup is correct. Community troubleshooting sometimes recommends reinstalling an app that was installed before Play services was configured. This can refresh dependency detection, but it is not a substitute for placing both components in the same profile.
- Check release notes before rolling back or resetting. Compare the current GrapheneOS release notes with the app’s current version. Compatibility fixes and regressions can be introduced on either side, so timing matters.
Fixing a “Google Play services are missing” message
Verify the profile boundary
Open the app and Play components from the same user or work profile. If you use multiple profiles, switch deliberately rather than assuming the launcher icon identifies the profile you intended. Installing Play services in your personal profile does not help an app installed in a work profile.
Install the official components
In the relevant profile, use the GrapheneOS App Store to install sandboxed Google Play and the Play Store. Launch the components once, allow any requested setup permissions and make sure they can reach the network. Then launch the affected app again.
Separate dependency failure from app policy
If the app still reports a missing service, check whether it gives a more specific error after network access is enabled. A generic message can conceal a failed integrity request or an app that expects privileged Play integration unavailable to a sandboxed installation. At that point, capture the exact wording and app version instead of repeatedly reinstalling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen notifications arrive only while the app is open
First identify whether the app depends on Play services for background delivery. If it does, verify same-profile placement, network permission and battery treatment for both the app and Play services. Test with the screen locked and the app closed so that you are measuring background behavior rather than foreground callbacks.
If portable apps deliver notifications normally while a particular app does not, that contrast points to the app’s implementation rather than a system-wide GrapheneOS failure. Some developers have implemented only the Play-services notification path. No system setting can add a notification transport that the app never implemented.
Also distinguish delayed delivery from blocked delivery. A message that appears after opening the app may indicate that the app polls its server only in the foreground. Note the delay, network state and whether other apps notify normally; those details help support staff identify the implementation limitation.

When a banking app says the device is rooted or uncertified
Perform the safe checks
- Confirm you are using the official app release and that it is installed in the intended profile.
- Install sandboxed Google Play in that profile if the bank requires Play services.
- Ensure Play services and the app have network access.
- Look for a Play Integrity or certification notice in the operating-system settings and record its wording.
- Check whether the rejection began after an app or GrapheneOS update.
Know when configuration is not the cause
Some banks intentionally reject alternate operating systems, uncertified environments or attestation results they do not recognize. GrapheneOS does not promise to bypass those decisions, and repeatedly changing settings can create new variables without improving security. Contact the bank through its supported channel and ask whether its current release supports GrapheneOS; do not submit credentials to unofficial modified builds.

Install it from the required source
- Open the GrapheneOS App Store in the profile where you want to use Android Auto.
- Install Android Auto from that store. The official GrapheneOS guide says the Play Store and other app sources are not the supported installation path for Android Auto.
- Ensure sandboxed Google Play is installed and working in the same profile.
- Open Settings > Apps > Sandboxed Google Play and use the Android Auto configuration screen.
Grant connection permissions
Enable the baseline permissions for your connection mode. Wired use generally needs less access, but some vehicles still require wireless permissions even when a cable is connected. If a wired connection fails, check the wireless-related permission described by the dedicated settings screen rather than assuming the cable is defective.
Forward notifications and show compatible apps
Notification forwarding requires Android Auto notification access. Enable that access in the relevant settings when you want messages or other alerts forwarded to the car. Apps appear in the car interface only when they were installed from the Play Store and support Android Auto; an arbitrary app installed from another source will not necessarily be offered as a car application.
Isolate the connection failure
Test the phone with the vehicle stationary, then record whether the failure occurs during installation, pairing, projection or notification forwarding. Those are separate stages with separate permissions. Include the vehicle connection mode, profile, Android Auto version and GrapheneOS build in any support request.
Diagnosing a failure that began after an update
Do not assume an update proves a GrapheneOS regression. The app may have added a new integrity check, changed its Play-services requirement or introduced a bug; GrapheneOS may have changed a compatibility behavior; or a permission or profile may have changed during installation.

What to include in a useful support report
Support staff can investigate a reproducible, versioned report. Include:
- App or service name, exact version and installation source.
- Phone model and GrapheneOS release or build.
- User or work profile in which the app runs.
- Whether sandboxed Google Play and the Play Store are installed in that same profile.
- Whether the app and Play services have network access.
- Exact error text, screen, action and expected result.
- Relevant notification access, nearby-device, location and battery settings.
- Any Play Integrity, certification, rooted-device or anti-tampering warning.
- When the problem started and whether it followed an app, Play component or GrapheneOS update.
- Every troubleshooting step already attempted, including a reinstall and any app-specific compatibility option.
These details mirror the information GrapheneOS support requests in compatibility discussions. They also prevent a helper from suggesting a same-profile check that you have already completed.

A practical decision tree
| If you see | Do first | Likely boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Missing Play services | Install sandboxed Play in the app’s profile and verify network access. | Usually user configuration; sometimes an unsupported dependency. |
| Foreground notifications only | Check Play availability, battery handling and whether other apps notify in the background. | Often the app’s notification implementation. |
| Rooted or uncertified warning | Verify official installation and record any integrity notice; do not bypass checks. | Usually an app-side security policy. |
| Android Auto failure | Install from the GrapheneOS App Store and configure Settings > Apps > Sandboxed Google Play. | Installation source, profile or connection permissions. |
| Failure after an update | Compare app and GrapheneOS versions and read current release notes. | Could be an app change, OS change or altered configuration. |
What you can and cannot conclude
A working setup for one app does not certify every app, and a rejection by one banking or authentication app does not mean GrapheneOS is broadly incompatible. The operating system supplies a sandboxed path for official Google Play components, but each developer decides which APIs, certification signals and anti-tampering rules are mandatory.
Use the configuration checks to eliminate problems you control. Once same-profile placement, installation source, network access, permissions and versions are documented, an integrity rejection or missing feature may simply reflect the app’s support policy. Recheck GrapheneOS release notes and the app’s current behavior whenever either side updates, because compatibility is version-specific rather than permanent.
