For most streaming households, buy the 64GB Wi‑Fi Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, model A2737). It has the same A15 Bionic processor, HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6 and 4K HDR capabilities as the larger model, so reliable home Wi‑Fi is the main requirement.
Choose the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet version (3rd generation, model A2843) if you need Gigabit Ethernet, Thread smart-home support or substantially more room for apps and games. The decision is about networking, smart-home radios and capacity—not better picture quality.

The two current Apple TV 4K configurations
Apple’s 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K is sold in two hardware configurations. Both use the A15 Bionic chip, output up to 4K at 60 frames per second, support Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and use HDMI 2.1. Their meaningful differences are storage, networking hardware and Thread support.

When the 64GB Wi‑Fi model is the right buy
Streaming-first households
The A2737 is the sensible choice when your Apple TV will mainly run streaming services, catch-up television, music and occasional casual games. Streaming video is delivered from the internet rather than stored permanently on the box, so the 64GB capacity is usually ample for that pattern of use.
Reliable wireless coverage
Because Apple does not list a built-in Ethernet port for A2737, it depends on Wi‑Fi 6. Place it where your home network provides a stable signal, especially if the television is in a room separated from the router by thick walls or several floors. A fast broadband plan cannot compensate for a weak wireless link between the router and the Apple TV.
What you still get
Choosing 64GB does not reduce the processor or video standards. A2737 uses A15 Bionic, HDMI 2.1, Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi‑Fi 6, with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support up to 4K60. If those are the features you care about, the less expensive configuration delivers the same core playback capability as A2843.

When 128GB and Ethernet are worth paying for
You need a cable connection
A2843 adds Gigabit Ethernet as well as Wi‑Fi 6. A wired connection can provide steadier throughput and lower variability than wireless, which is useful when the Apple TV is beside a router, network switch or Ethernet wall jack. It is also a practical choice in homes where Wi‑Fi congestion causes buffering or inconsistent downloads.

You use Thread smart-home accessories
Thread is listed on the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model and not on A2737’s Apple specifications. If the Apple TV will participate in a Thread-based smart-home setup, A2843 is the configuration that includes the required radio. Do not assume that buying the cheaper box and adding an Ethernet adapter will provide Thread; the network hardware is part of the model.
You install many apps or games
The 128GB capacity gives twice the listed storage of A2737. That headroom matters for households with a large collection of games, multiple high-storage apps or several people using the same device. It can also reduce the need to remove apps when the library grows, although the 128GB model does not make an individual app run faster.
Do you actually need 128GB?
Use this test before paying the premium:
- Choose 64GB if the device is primarily for on-demand video, live television, music and a small number of apps, and your Wi‑Fi is dependable.
- Choose 128GB if you expect a substantial game library, share the Apple TV among several users, want Thread accessories or prefer to avoid wireless networking.
- Do not choose 128GB solely for higher picture quality. Both 3rd-generation configurations use the same A15 Bionic platform and support the same stated 4K HDR formats.
Storage is fixed at purchase, so consider the household’s likely use over the device’s service life rather than only the apps installed on day one.
Is Apple TV Ethernet worth it?
Ethernet is most valuable when you can connect the Apple TV directly to your network and want predictable connectivity. It is less compelling when the router is far away, no cable run exists, and Wi‑Fi 6 already performs reliably at the television. Ethernet does not automatically improve the resolution or HDR format of a stream; it addresses the connection between the box and your local network.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Remember that A2737 has no Ethernet port listed by Apple. If wired networking is a requirement, select A2843 before ordering rather than planning to add a port later.
Apple TV 4K generations compared
| Generation and year | Model numbers | Storage options | Processor | Video and HDMI | Networking and Thread |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st generation (2017) | A1842 | 32GB or 64GB | Not stated in the supplied specifications | HDMI 2.0a | Gigabit Ethernet; 802.11ac Wi‑Fi; Thread not stated |
| 2nd generation (2021) | A2169 | 32GB or 64GB | Not stated in the supplied specifications | HDMI 2.1 | Gigabit Ethernet, Wi‑Fi 6 and Thread |
| 3rd generation (2022) | A2737 or A2843 | 64GB or 128GB | A15 Bionic | HDMI 2.1; Dolby Vision and HDR10+ up to 4K60 | Wi‑Fi 6; Gigabit Ethernet and Thread on A2843 |
Should you buy a used 1st-generation model?
The 2017 model may cost less, but it uses older HDMI 2.0a and 802.11ac Wi‑Fi. More importantly, TechRadar reported on 11 June 2026 that tvOS 27 supports the 2nd- and 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K but excludes the 1st generation. That makes A1842 a poor choice if continued operating-system support matters. Support after tvOS 27 has not been confirmed by Apple, so treat any longer-term promise as uncertain.
Is the 2nd generation still viable?
The 2021 A2169 remains supported by tvOS 27 and includes Gigabit Ethernet, Wi‑Fi 6 and Thread. It can be a good used-market option when priced meaningfully below a 3rd-generation unit. The 3rd generation adds the A15 Bionic platform and changes the storage lineup to 64GB Wi‑Fi or 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet, so compare condition, warranty and price rather than assuming every newer listing has the same configuration.

Performance and picture features
The 3rd-generation models share the features that affect playback quality. A15 Bionic supplies the processing platform, HDMI 2.1 connects the box to a compatible television or receiver, and Apple lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support up to 4K60. Your television, receiver, HDMI cable and streaming service must also support the desired format; buying the 128GB version alone cannot add HDR capability to older equipment.

Price and the real purchase cost
What Hi‑Fi reported in June 2026 listed prices of $199/£199/AU$299 for 64GB and $249/£249/AU$399 for 128GB Ethernet. These are listed prices reported for those markets at that time; retailer discounts, stock and regional pricing can change.
| Configuration | Reported June 2026 list price | Included in the box | Budget separately |
|---|---|---|---|
| 64GB Wi‑Fi (A2737) | $199 / £199 / AU$299 | Apple TV 4K, Siri Remote (3rd generation), power lead | HDMI cable; price not stated |
| 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet (A2843) | $249 / £249 / AU$399 | Apple TV 4K, Siri Remote (3rd generation), power lead | HDMI cable; price not stated |
The difference in listed price is $50, £50 or AU$100 in the cited markets. Check the price in the country where you will buy, and verify that a listing identifies the 3rd-generation model and the correct storage/network configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to choose the right model step by step
- Check your network. If the television location has dependable Wi‑Fi 6 coverage, A2737 remains an option. If you have an Ethernet jack or persistent wireless congestion, favor A2843.
- List your smart-home requirements. If you plan to use Thread accessories, select A2843 because Apple lists Thread on that model.
- Estimate storage use. Streaming-focused use points to 64GB; a large game or app collection points to 128GB.
- Confirm the model identifier. Look for A2737 for 64GB Wi‑Fi or A2843 for 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet. Do not rely only on a seller’s title.
- Check television and receiver inputs. Make sure the display chain accepts HDMI and the HDR formats you intend to use.
- Add the cable to the basket. Apple supplies a power lead but sells the HDMI cable separately.
- Compare support and condition. Prefer 2nd- or 3rd-generation hardware if operating-system support through tvOS 27 matters, and treat support beyond that release as unconfirmed.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Assuming every Apple TV 4K has Ethernet
Only A2843 in the 3rd-generation lineup lists Gigabit Ethernet. Fix this by checking the model number and specification before paying.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Paying for 128GB expecting better video
The storage upgrade does not change the A15 Bionic, HDMI 2.1 or listed Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support. Buy it for capacity, Ethernet or Thread.
Forgetting the HDMI cable
The box includes a power lead and Siri Remote, but Apple says the HDMI cable is sold separately. Obtain a suitable cable before installation so the television can be connected immediately.
Buying the 2017 model for a small saving
A1842 uses older HDMI 2.0a and is excluded from tvOS 27 according to the 11 June 2026 report. The lower initial price may not compensate for a shorter current software-support horizon.
Confusing Wi‑Fi availability with internet speed
A fast broadband subscription cannot correct a weak wireless path inside the home. Test the network at the television location; if reliability remains poor and cabling is available, A2843’s Ethernet port is the direct remedy.
Bottom line
Buy the 64GB Wi‑Fi Apple TV 4K (A2737) for ordinary streaming on a reliable wireless network. Spend more on the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model (A2843) when you need wired networking, Thread smart-home support or room for a larger app and game library. The 2nd-generation A2169 can still make sense used because it is supported by tvOS 27, while the 2017 A1842 should be avoided if current software support is important.
