Start with Settings > Video and Audio. Leave Apple TV 4K on a format supported by your television, then open Match Content and enable Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate when your display handles format switching. Keep Audio Format on Auto unless your receiver or television needs a specific fallback. These choices preserve compatible movies and shows more faithfully without forcing one resolution, color mode, or audio conversion on every setup.
After those first checks, adjust accessibility and calibration tools only for a specific need. If 4K or HDR is missing, troubleshoot the entire HDMI path—TV input, enhanced HDMI mode, receiver or switch, and cables—before buying anything.

The best first-time setup sequence
Apple TV selects video and audio formats based on what it detects from the connected equipment. The right settings therefore depend on your Apple TV generation, television, receiver, HDMI path, region and content. Use this order so you change the high-impact options first and leave specialized controls alone unless they solve a problem.

Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate
What Match Dynamic Range does
With Match Dynamic Range enabled, Apple TV attempts to output compatible content in the dynamic range in which it was mastered instead of converting everything to the range selected for the Apple TV interface. This can preserve the intended difference between standard dynamic range and HDR material when the display supports both.
Open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content, then switch on Match Dynamic Range. This is a content-fidelity choice, not a guarantee that every title will become HDR; the source, app and display still have to support the format.
What Match Frame Rate does
Match Frame Rate lets compatible movies and shows use their original frame rate. Streaming and downloaded video can be mastered at multiple rates, so matching avoids making Apple TV convert every title to one output rate. Enable it in the same Match Content menu when your display handles the transitions.
Apple warns that the screen may briefly go black or flicker while it changes format. That transition is expected; it is not, by itself, evidence of a fault. If a title repeatedly loses its picture, turn the option off temporarily and test the HDMI chain.
Test an unverified format first
Apple TV may list a format it cannot verify with the connected display. Use the on-screen test before accepting it. If the picture disappears and does not return, wait for the test to time out or use the remote recovery procedure shown on screen, then select a known-supported format. Do not choose an unverified mode simply because its resolution or HDR label looks better.

Apple’s explanation of both matching controls and their display-switching behavior is in Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate on Apple TV.
Choose a compatible video format, HDMI output and chroma mode
There is no universally correct forced resolution. Select a format that your television or projector documents as supported, and let Apple TV use the best available option for that connection. The choices shown can change with the Apple TV model, display identification, selected format and aspect ratio.
Recommended Free Tools
| Control | Recommended starting point | When to change it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | A format listed as supported by the display | Change only when the TV manual specifies another supported 4K, HDR or refresh-rate combination | Forcing an unsupported mode can produce a blank or unstable picture |
| HDMI Output | The mode your display and cable path support | Use a different output only to match the TV’s documented signal range | Options vary by Apple TV generation and connected equipment |
| Chroma | 4:2:0 for broad compatibility | Try 4:4:4 when small text or fine edges need extra clarity and every link supports it | 4:4:4 requires a high-speed HDMI cable; the visible improvement depends on the display and content |
| Color format | YCbCr for most televisions | Use RGB only when the TV’s input range is configured to match | Apple states that “YCbCr is preferred for most TVs” |
YCbCr versus RGB
Apple identifies YCbCr as preferred for most TVs. RGB High and RGB Low must correspond to the television’s own black-level or range setting; a mismatch can make blacks look gray or crush shadow detail. Apple also specifies a high-speed HDMI cable for RGB modes. Change the TV’s range control only when its manual uses matching terminology, because manufacturers label the same concept differently.
Chroma and cable bandwidth
Chroma 4:2:0 works with most televisions and HDMI cables. Chroma 4:4:4 carries more color detail and can help with fine text, but it needs a high-speed HDMI cable and a compatible signal path. A receiver, switch or splitter between Apple TV and the TV must support the same mode; otherwise the higher-detail selection can fail or be rejected.

Set Audio Format for compatibility, not maximum numbers
Why Auto is the right default
Leave Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format on Auto for most systems. Apple TV detects the best format the connected equipment supports, decodes it and sends uncompressed audio. This allows a compatible television, soundbar or receiver to receive multichannel sound without you hard-coding a conversion that could remove capabilities.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 helps
Select Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 only when the equipment cannot accept Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM and needs a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal. This is a compatibility fallback, not a quality upgrade. If the receiver supports newer formats, conversion can prevent it from receiving them.
When Stereo Only is appropriate
Choose Stereo Only for a genuinely two-channel setup, such as a television or amplifier that cannot decode multichannel audio. With a surround receiver or soundbar, Stereo Only needlessly discards surround channels.
Dialogue and loudness controls
Enhance makes dialogue more prominent with minimal impact on the original mix. Enhance More makes speech very prominent but can alter the balance of music and effects. Use these controls for a speech-intelligibility problem, not as a universal sound-quality setting.
Reduce Loud Sounds, audio-language selection and navigation clicks are household preferences or accessibility choices. Their availability depends on the connected equipment and the content. Apple documents these controls in its audio settings guide.

Use calibration and accessibility tools only for a defined problem
Color Balance
Settings > Video and Audio > Calibration > Color Balance uses a compatible iPhone to adjust color output. Follow the on-screen instructions and hold the phone where Apple TV requests. It is useful when the television’s color is visibly inaccurate, but it is not required for a correctly calibrated display and does not replace the TV’s own picture modes.
Zoom and Overscan
Use Zoom when on-screen elements are too small. Use Overscan when the television crops the edges of the Apple TV interface or stretches the image. Correct the TV’s aspect-ratio or “just scan” setting first when possible; adding overscan can hide picture information.
Color Bars
Color Bars provide a reference image for adjusting the television’s brightness, contrast, color and tint controls. Make one change at a time and return to the TV’s normal picture mode afterward. This tool is for calibration, not a setting that improves every display automatically.
Wireless Audio Sync
Run Wireless Audio Sync when voices do not line up with the picture because wired and wireless speakers have different delays. It measures the timing with an iPhone and applies a correction. If only one app is out of sync, check that app and the television before changing the system-wide value.
Apple’s calibration instructions, including device and feature limitations, are in its calibration guide.

Fix missing or unstable 4K and HDR
When Apple TV does not offer 4K or HDR, treat the connection as a chain rather than assuming the box is defective. Some televisions enable HDR only on particular HDMI inputs, and many require an “enhanced,” “deep color” or similar HDMI mode in the TV menu.
- Confirm the TV input. Consult the TV manual and move Apple TV to an HDMI port that supports the desired 4K and HDR combination. Enable the manufacturer’s enhanced HDMI or HDR setting if required.
- Check the selected Apple TV format. In Settings > Video and Audio, choose a format the TV explicitly lists. Use the on-screen test before accepting an unverified option.
- Run Check HDMI Connection. This diagnostic is in the Video and Audio settings and can identify a link that cannot sustain the selected signal.
- Inspect every cable and intermediary. The HDMI cable from Apple TV to a receiver, and the receiver-to-TV cable, must support the same 4K/HDR requirements. A switch or splitter can be the limiting device.
- Bypass intermediate equipment. Connect Apple TV directly to the TV. If 4K or HDR returns, the receiver, switch or splitter needs a compatible input, firmware or configuration.
- Replace a cable only after isolating the fault. For HDR-capable 4K setups, Apple calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and lists the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as one tested example. This does not mean every working installation needs a new cable.
Apple’s troubleshooting steps are in If your Apple TV 4K isn’t displaying 4K or HDR, while its connection requirements are covered in the Apple TV 4K setup guide.
Account for Apple TV generation, region and display limits
An absent menu item is not automatically a software failure. Apple says available features and content vary by country and region, and options depend on the Apple TV model, connected display and selected format or aspect ratio.

A practical decision guide
| Your priority | Change first | Leave alone unless needed |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve the way films were mastered | Enable Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate | RGB and chroma experiments |
| Get a stable picture | Select a verified TV format; run Check HDMI Connection | Unverified formats and forced output modes |
| Use surround sound | Keep Audio Format on Auto | Convert to Dolby Digital 5.1 or Stereo Only |
| Make speech easier to hear | Try Enhance, then Enhance More if necessary | Changing video output or color controls |
| Correct cropped or inaccurate pictures | Use TV aspect-ratio controls, then Overscan or Color Balance as appropriate | Changing audio format |
| Resolve lip-sync problems | Run Wireless Audio Sync | Changing frame-rate matching without evidence of a video timing issue |
The short version is to match content, keep the signal within the display’s documented capabilities and let Auto handle audio. Every other control should answer a specific compatibility, accessibility or calibration need.
