The compatible Apple Pencil depends on which iPad mini you own: iPad mini (A17 Pro) works with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C); iPad mini (6th generation) works with Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C); iPad mini (5th generation) works with Apple Pencil (1st generation).
Check the iPad’s model name before ordering. Apple Pencil generations are not interchangeable across these iPad mini models.

Apple’s compatibility list does not show the first-generation Pencil working with either the sixth-generation or A17 Pro mini. It also does not list the second-generation Pencil or Apple Pencil Pro for the fifth-generation mini. Treat those omissions as incompatibilities rather than assuming that a newer Pencil will work with an older iPad.

How to identify your iPad mini model
You do not need to identify the tablet by its size, case, color or port. Apple provides a model label in iPadOS.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Read the value beside Model Name.
Match that complete name to the compatibility table. “iPad mini (A17 Pro),” “iPad mini (6th generation)” and “iPad mini (5th generation)” are different entries, even though all three are called iPad mini in everyday conversation. If a retailer listing uses only “iPad mini,” pause and verify the generation before purchasing.
iPad mini (A17 Pro): choose between Apple Pencil Pro and USB-C
The A17 Pro mini has two compatible options. Both are suitable for precise writing, sketching and document markup, but they are not feature-equivalent.

| Minimum iPadOS requirement | iPadOS 17.5 or later | iPadOS 17.1.1 or later |
When Apple Pencil Pro is the better choice
Choose Apple Pencil Pro if your work depends on pressure-sensitive marks or if you want controls that can be triggered from the Pencil itself. Pressure sensitivity can change the result of a stroke according to how firmly you press, which matters for illustration and other applications that use pressure-aware tools.
Pro also adds double-tap tool switching, squeeze controls, barrel roll, haptic feedback and Find My support. Its magnetic attachment handles pairing and charging, so it is the more convenient choice when you want the Pencil to remain ready on the side of the iPad rather than be connected to a cable.

Apple lists iPadOS 17.5 or later as the requirement for Apple Pencil Pro. If the A17 Pro mini is running an earlier release, update iPadOS before treating a pairing problem as a hardware failure.
When Apple Pencil (USB-C) is enough
Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the simpler compatible option for handwriting, ordinary sketching and marking up documents. It supports precision, low latency and tilt sensitivity, so it still provides the core pen experience for those tasks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt does not support pressure sensitivity. It also lacks the Pro controls listed above. Do not buy the USB-C model expecting pressure-sensitive drawing or describe it as pressure-sensitive in an app or product listing.
The USB-C Pencil pairs and charges via a USB-C cable. Its magnetic attachment to the iPad mini is for storage, not wireless charging. Apple lists iPadOS 17.1.1 or later as the system requirement. That makes the USB-C model a practical choice when cable charging is acceptable and the extra Pro controls are not needed.
iPad mini (6th generation): Apple Pencil 2 or USB-C
The sixth-generation mini supports Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (USB-C). It does not support Apple Pencil Pro, and Apple does not list the first-generation Pencil for this model.

Choose Apple Pencil (2nd generation) for the fuller feature set
For the sixth-generation mini, the second-generation Pencil is the higher-feature option in Apple’s compatibility list. It is the appropriate choice when you specifically want that generation’s supported wireless experience and Pencil controls. Confirm the iPadOS version and follow the pairing instructions shown by the iPad when you attach the Pencil.
Choose Apple Pencil (USB-C) for core writing and markup
The USB-C Pencil is also compatible with the sixth-generation mini. It delivers precision, low latency and tilt sensitivity, but it has no pressure sensitivity. It pairs and charges using a USB-C cable, while its magnetic connection is only for storage.
The USB-C model is the only Pencil in the compatibility table that fits both the A17 Pro mini and the sixth-generation mini. That broad fit can be useful if a household has either of those two generations, but it still does not make the USB-C Pencil compatible with the fifth-generation mini.
iPad mini (5th generation): Apple Pencil (1st generation) only
The fifth-generation mini has one listed compatible model: Apple Pencil (1st generation). Neither Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (2nd generation) nor Apple Pencil (USB-C) appears as compatible for this iPad.
That means the fifth-generation mini should be treated as a separate compatibility case. A newer Pencil is not a safe substitute simply because it has a similar name or supports newer iPad models. Verify that a listing explicitly identifies the first-generation Pencil before ordering for this mini.

- WHY APPLE PENCIL - With pixel-perfect precision, tilt sensitivity, and low latency, Apple Pencil (USB-C) makes note-taking, signing documents, and drawing easy at an affordable price. It pairs and charges via USB-C and can magnetically attach to your iPad.
- COMPATIBILITY - Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with iPad Pro 13-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generation); iPad Pro 11-inch (M4 and M5); iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation); iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3, M4); iPad Air 11-inch (M2 and M3); iPad Air (4th and 5th generation); iPad (A16), iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad mini (6th generation); and iPad (10th generation).
- EASY AND NATURAL - Write, sketch, and draw with pixel-perfect precision. Apple Pencil (USB-C) does it all with low latency and tilt sensitivity. Apple Pencil pairs and charges via USB-C and features a flat edge that attaches magnetically.
- TRANSFORMS IPAD INTO A CANVAS - Draw, sketch, color, take notes, and mark up documents. Use built-in apps like Notes and Freeform, or choose from over a million more apps available on the App Store. And for pros, use Apple Pencil hover on iPad Pro and iPad Air to preview your mark before you make it.
- WHAT'S IN THE BOX - Apple Pencil (USB-C)
What “compatible” means in practice
Compatibility is more than whether the Pencil’s tip can touch the display. The iPad must recognize the Pencil, complete pairing and support its charging method and features. Apple’s generation-specific list is therefore more reliable than matching by appearance or assuming that every magnetic Pencil works with every mini.
- Model compatibility: The iPad mini generation must be one of the models listed for that Pencil.
- Software compatibility: The iPad must meet the stated iPadOS requirement for the Pencil, where one is specified.
- Feature compatibility: A Pencil can work for writing while lacking features such as pressure sensitivity or Pro controls.
- Charging compatibility: USB-C Pencil charging requires a USB-C cable; magnetic storage does not mean magnetic charging.
How to choose by the way you use your mini
For handwriting, reading notes and document markup
On an A17 Pro or sixth-generation mini, either compatible option can cover the core tasks of writing, sketching and markup. The USB-C model is appropriate if precision, low latency and tilt sensitivity are sufficient and you are comfortable pairing and charging with a cable.
On a fifth-generation mini, select Apple Pencil (1st generation), because it is the only model Apple lists for that generation.
For pressure-sensitive drawing
On the A17 Pro mini, choose Apple Pencil Pro. The USB-C model does not have pressure sensitivity. On the sixth-generation mini, the compatibility information supplied here lists Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and USB-C, but does not establish the same Pro feature set for either model; do not assume that a feature from Apple Pencil Pro carries over to an older mini.

Choose Apple Pencil Pro on the A17 Pro mini if magnetic pairing and charging, double-tap, squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback or Find My are important. The USB-C model uses a cable for pairing and charging and provides magnetic storage only.
For the fewest cross-device compatibility concerns
Apple Pencil (USB-C) is the broadest single fit in this table because it works with both the A17 Pro mini and the sixth-generation mini. It is not a replacement for the first-generation Pencil on the fifth-generation mini, and its lack of pressure sensitivity remains a decisive limitation for pressure-based workflows.
Quick Recap
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying by “iPad mini” alone: Check Settings > General > About > Model Name first.
- Assuming the newest Pencil works on every mini: Apple lists Pro only for the A17 Pro mini.
- Confusing magnetic storage with charging: USB-C Pencil charges through a USB-C cable.
- Expecting pressure sensitivity from USB-C: Apple’s comparison lists that feature as absent.
- Ignoring iPadOS requirements: Apple Pencil Pro requires iPadOS 17.5 or later; Apple Pencil (USB-C) requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later.
- Using a fifth-generation mini as a proxy for newer models: Its listed Pencil is the first-generation model only.
Troubleshooting a Pencil that will not pair
- Return to Settings > General > About > Model Name and verify the exact mini generation.
- Compare that model with the compatibility table rather than relying on the Pencil’s generation number alone.
- Check that the iPadOS version meets the requirement for the Pencil you selected. Pro requires 17.5 or later; USB-C requires 17.1.1 or later.
- If you are using Apple Pencil (USB-C), connect it with a USB-C cable for pairing and charging. Attaching it magnetically only stores it.
- If the model and software are correct but the Pencil still is not recognized, restart the iPad, reconnect the Pencil using its specified pairing method and check again. A Pencil that is not listed for the iPad mini generation will not become compatible through charging or restarting.
Quick pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the exact Model Name from the About screen.
- For A17 Pro, choose Pro for pressure sensitivity and Pro controls, or USB-C for core writing, sketching and markup.
- For sixth generation, choose Apple Pencil (2nd generation) or USB-C.
- For fifth generation, choose Apple Pencil (1st generation).
- Confirm the required iPadOS version before opening the package.
- If selecting USB-C, plan to pair and charge with a USB-C cable; magnetic attachment is storage only.
