HomeView requires a different answer. Reports published October 11, 2026 describe a possible display-equipped Apple home hub, but Apple has not supplied an official specification or availability page in the information available here. Treat its price, shipping date, radios, Matter support and replacement role as unconfirmed rather than delaying a working smart-home setup for it.

What a home hub does in Apple Home
A home hub is the always-on Apple device that coordinates your home when your iPhone or iPad is away. Apple describes hubs as providing remote access and allowing automations for smart accessories. A hub is also required when adding Matter accessories to Apple Home.
The hub needs to be inside the home, powered on and connected to the home network. Availability and some capabilities vary by country or region. A hub is not the same thing as an individual light, lock or sensor: it is the device that keeps those accessories reachable and runs scenes and automations when you are not actively using the Home app.
#1 Best Overall
- Premium, immersive, high-fidelity audio
Apple says HomePod and HomePod mini become home hubs automatically during setup. Apple TV becomes a hub after you add it to a room in the Home app. If you have several eligible devices, Apple Home can select one automatically, while the Home app lets you inspect the current hub and choose a preferred one.
HomePod mini, HomePod and Apple TV 4K compared
| Device | Primary job | Home-hub setup | Thread information in Apple documentation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HomePod mini | Compact Siri smart speaker | Becomes a hub automatically when set up | Apple lists HomePod mini as a Thread-enabled hub example | A small room, voice control and Matter/Thread accessories |
| HomePod (2nd generation) | Larger Siri smart speaker | Becomes a hub automatically when set up | Apple’s iPhone guide identifies it among Thread-capable hub examples | A speaker-led setup where you want a larger HomePod |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, Wi‑Fi + Ethernet) | Television streaming device | Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Room, then assign or create a room | Apple lists this exact configuration as a Thread-enabled hub example | Homes that need Apple TV streaming and a hub in the same device |
| HomeView | Reported display-equipped home hub | Not established by an official Apple specification in the available sources | Thread and Matter support are not confirmed | Only a conditional future option pending Apple’s official details |
The table separates documented roles from assumptions. Apple has not published a comparative speed, reliability or range statistic for these hubs, so there is no evidence-based performance winner.
When HomePod mini is the right choice
You want a hub and a Siri speaker
HomePod mini combines the always-on hub role with a compact speaker for Siri requests, music and household control. You can ask Siri to control accessories, run scenes or report the state of devices without picking up your phone. Because Apple says it automatically becomes a hub after setup, there is no separate hub configuration step.

You are building around Thread accessories
Apple’s support material names HomePod mini as a Thread-enabled hub example. That matters for Matter accessories that require a Thread border router rather than Wi‑Fi. Check the accessory’s packaging and requirements first: Matter is a device standard, while Thread is one possible network transport. A Matter product can still require a particular transport or additional bridge.
You need a discreet device in a smaller room
The mini’s compact speaker format makes it practical for a bedroom, office or kitchen where a television is not present. It can remain powered and connected in the home network while handling remote access and automations.
When HomePod (2nd generation) makes sense
HomePod (2nd generation) follows the same basic hub behavior: Apple says HomePod devices automatically become hubs when set up. Apple’s iPhone user guide also identifies HomePod (2nd generation) among examples relevant to Thread-based Matter setups.
Choose it when the speaker is the center of the room and you prefer the HomePod form factor over a television streamer. The available documentation does not establish a comparative hub-performance advantage over HomePod mini, so choose between them on speaker size, room placement and the accessory requirements you have verified.
When Apple TV 4K is the better hub
You already want Apple TV streaming
Apple TV 4K is a television streaming device that can also serve as the home hub. If your living room already needs Apple’s streaming interface, combining both roles avoids placing a separate speaker or hub beside the television.
You need the documented Thread configuration
For Thread-based Matter accessories, Apple specifically lists Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) with Wi‑Fi + Ethernet as a Thread-enabled hub example. Do not generalize that statement to every Apple TV model or to a Wi‑Fi-only configuration. Check the model generation and network configuration before purchasing for Thread devices.

- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
You prefer a wired network connection
The documented Thread example includes the Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration. Ethernet can also make the television-area hub placement predictable if your router or wired network is nearby, although the available sources do not provide a measured reliability comparison between wired and wireless operation.
Why you might use HomePod and Apple TV together
These devices are not mutually exclusive. Apple documents using HomePod with Apple TV 4K for home-theater audio, so Apple TV can handle television streaming while HomePod supplies the room’s audio and Siri control. A HomePod can also remain a convenient voice-control point when the television is off.
In a combined setup, keep each device on the home network and powered. The Home app may designate one hub as active while another remains available. The purpose of adding both is room coverage and entertainment convenience, not a documented promise of doubled hub performance.
Matter and Thread: check the exact requirement
Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to Apple Home. That requirement does not mean every hub supports every radio or accessory configuration. Thread accessories need a Thread border router, and Apple’s documentation identifies specific examples rather than making a blanket claim for every Apple device.
- HomePod mini: listed by Apple as a Thread-enabled hub example.
- Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, Wi‑Fi + Ethernet): listed by Apple as a Thread-enabled hub example.
- HomePod (2nd generation): identified in Apple’s iPhone guide among relevant Thread-capable hub examples.
- Other Apple TV or HomePod variants: verify the model in Apple’s current support documentation before buying for a Thread requirement.
- Third-party Thread border routers: Apple’s iPhone guide notes that a compatible third-party Thread border router can also be relevant.
Before buying an accessory, identify whether it uses Matter over Wi‑Fi, Matter over Thread or another bridge. Then match that requirement to the exact hub model and connection configuration. A generic “Matter compatible” label alone is not enough to select a hub.
How to set up HomePod as your hub
- Place HomePod or HomePod mini inside your home where it can remain powered and connected to the home network.
- Set it up in the Home app using the Apple Account and home you intend to use.
- Apple’s setup behavior makes the HomePod an available home hub automatically; no separate “make this a hub” switch is required.
- Open the Home app and confirm its status in Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges.
If you are adding Matter accessories, complete HomePod setup before scanning or commissioning the accessory. Confirm the accessory’s Thread requirement and the HomePod model if the product requires Thread.

How to set up Apple TV as your hub
- Connect Apple TV to power and your home network, then sign in with the Apple Account associated with your Apple Home.
- On Apple TV, open Settings.
- Select AirPlay and Apple Home.
- Choose Room.
- Select an existing room or choose the option to create one, then assign Apple TV to it.
- Open the Home app on your iPhone and go to Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges to confirm that Apple TV is available as a hub.
For Thread accessories, verify that the Apple TV is the third-generation Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model named in Apple’s support documentation. The setup path alone does not establish Thread support for another model.
Choose or inspect the active hub
In the Home app, open Home Settings and select Home Hubs & Bridges. This view shows the available hubs and identifies the active one. Apple provides an Automatic Selection setting; leaving it enabled lets Home choose, while turning it off allows you to select a preferred hub.
A preferred hub is useful when you deliberately want a particular model or room to coordinate the home. It does not change the requirement that the device stay powered, at home and connected to the network. If the chosen device is offline, remote access and automations can be affected until another available hub takes over or you correct the connection.

Troubleshoot an unreachable hub
Check power and network first
- Confirm the HomePod or Apple TV is powered on.
- Confirm it is still connected to the home network and has not been moved outside the home.
- For Apple TV, verify that it remains assigned to a room in AirPlay and Apple Home settings.
- Reopen Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges and check whether another hub is active.
Update and restart
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating and restarting the hub. Apply available software updates, restart the affected HomePod or Apple TV, then check the Home app again.

Apple also advises checking iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication for the Apple Account when home-hub functions are not working as expected. These account settings can affect remote access and accessory management even when the device appears connected locally.
Recheck accessory compatibility
If only a Thread-based Matter accessory fails, revisit the accessory’s transport requirement and the hub model. A functioning home hub does not prove that it includes the Thread capability required by that particular accessory.
What is HomeView, and should you wait?
As of the information available for this article, HomeView is a reported, not officially specified, Apple product. MacRumors reported on October 11, 2026, citing Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, that a display-equipped Apple home hub called HomeView was expected to be unveiled October 13, with shipping reportedly later. A separate October 11 MacRumors report summarized leak claims involving a touch-enabled display, an A18 chip, Siri AI and tabletop and wall-mounted forms.
Those details are attributed leak claims and secondary reporting. No official Apple HomeView announcement or product specification page was available in the cited material. Therefore, the following points remain unconfirmed:
- Final product name and whether it launched.
- Price, countries of sale and shipping date.
- Whether it includes a Thread radio or supports Matter directly.
- Whether it can become an Apple Home hub in the same way as HomePod or Apple TV.
- Whether Apple intends it to replace, supplement or simply resemble existing hubs.
If you need a hub now, choose from Apple’s documented HomePod and Apple TV options rather than buying on the assumption that HomeView will replace them. If you are willing to wait, check Apple’s official product and support pages after the reported October 13 event and verify the exact model’s Matter and Thread capabilities before placing an order. Do not rely on a leak-derived shipping date or specification.
A practical decision guide
Choose HomePod mini when
- You want Siri and a speaker in the same compact device.
- Your accessories need a Thread-enabled hub and HomePod mini matches the requirement.
- You do not need a television streaming device in the installation room.
Choose HomePod (2nd generation) when
- A larger HomePod speaker is the central purpose of the purchase.
- You want automatic hub setup through HomePod.
- Your verified accessory list is compatible with the model’s documented Thread role, where required.
Choose Apple TV 4K when
- You already want Apple TV streaming for the television.
- You can use the third-generation Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration named by Apple for Thread support.
- You prefer the hub to live near the television and network equipment.
Use HomePod and Apple TV together when
- You want Apple TV streaming and HomePod home-theater audio.
- You want Siri access from a speaker while the television is off.
- You have more than one room where an always-on Apple device is useful.
Wait for HomeView only when
- You accept that the product, specifications and availability are not confirmed in the available official documentation.
- You do not need a functioning hub immediately.
- You are prepared to verify Apple’s final announcement, regional availability and accessory standards before buying.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Apple’s documentation establishes the basic hub behavior, setup paths, remote-access and automation role, Matter requirement, and named Thread-capable examples. It does not establish a measured ranking for speed, reliability, range, adoption or value among the devices. The HomeView reports do not establish final specifications or a confirmed replacement for HomePod or Apple TV.
That makes the choice straightforward: match the hub to the job you already need, then verify the precise model against your accessories. HomePod mini is the simplest speaker-first choice; Apple TV 4K is the sensible television-first choice; and HomeView remains a watch-and-verify proposition until Apple publishes definitive information.
