Use a Google TV kids profile when your device offers it. It lets you choose which apps appear, set movie and TV rating limits, schedule a daily viewing allowance, set bedtime, and require adult credentials to leave the profile. If your television uses the older Android TV interface, a PIN-protected restricted profile can limit access to selected apps, but it does not provide the same documented time schedules or rating controls.
These controls are not a complete filter for everything a child may see. Google TV’s ratings apply to Google recommendations and Family Library content, not recommendations or searches supplied inside third-party apps. Configure parental controls in each streaming app as well, and remember that menus and profile availability vary by device and region.

Which profile should you use?
Android TV is often used as a broad name for televisions and streaming devices that may actually present either Google TV menus or the older Android TV interface. The profile type determines which controls you get.

If the home screen shows a profile picture or initial and offers Add a kid, use the Google TV instructions below. If your settings contain Personal → Security & Restrictions → Create restricted profile, use the Android TV procedure. A manufacturer may rename or relocate these entries.

Set up a Google TV kids profile
Create the profile
- From the Google TV home screen, open your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Add account, then Add a kid.
- Select an existing child in your family group, or follow the on-screen steps to add one.
- Choose the apps that should appear on the child’s home screen and complete the parental-control prompts.
A child can use a kids profile without having an email address and password of their own. Google notes that kids profiles are not available on every device or in every region; if Add a kid is absent, use the profile and security options your device provides rather than assuming the account is misconfigured. Allow or hide apps later
To change the app list after setup, open All settings → Accounts & Profiles, select the child’s profile, and choose Manage apps. Authenticate as the adult account, then allow or hide apps. Hiding an app removes it from the child’s home screen; it does not change the app’s own account, subscription, or parental-control settings.
Set movie and TV ratings
From the same child-profile area, open Content restrictions and set the movie and television ratings appropriate for the child. These limits govern Google TV recommendations, including popular-title recommendations, and content shared through Family Library. They are not a universal rating filter for every application installed on the television.

Schedule a daily limit and bedtime
Open the child’s profile and select Screen time settings. Google TV provides two separate scheduling tools:

- Daily limit: Set a limit for each day. The control moves in 15-minute increments and allows up to 8 hours.
- Bedtime: Set the times when the child profile should stop being available for each day. Bedtime entries use 30-minute increments.
The daily allowance and bedtime are configurable limits for that Google TV kids profile. They are not evidence that Google TV is measuring the child’s total screen use on phones, tablets, computers, or another television.
Add one-time bonus time
If you decide to extend viewing temporarily, an adult can choose bonus time from the time-out screen. Bonus time is added in 15-minute increments, up to 8 hours. It changes the current session’s allowance; it does not permanently alter the recurring daily schedule.
Require an adult to leave the profile
To stop a child from switching to an unrestricted adult area, open Accounts & Profiles → the child’s profile → Kids lock. Verify the adult account and enable the lock. Exiting the kids profile then requires the adult PIN or password, depending on the account’s security method.

Third-party recommendations and searches
Google states that its movie and TV restrictions do not apply to recommendations or search results supplied directly by apps. A title blocked from Google TV’s own recommendations may still appear when a child searches inside an installed streaming app, or when that app generates its own home-screen recommendations.

Open the parental-control or child-profile settings in every app the child can use. The available controls, rating systems, PIN requirements, and profile behavior are set by each app provider, so do not assume that a Google TV rating choice automatically carries over.
Family Link has a different role
Family Link can help parents monitor app activity and block or unblock apps, but Google says the Google TV daily limit and downtime controls must be set on the television itself, not through Family Link. If an app has both mobile and TV versions, block both versions to prevent access on Google TV. Not every Family Link parental-control feature is available for a Google TV kids profile.
Use Family Link for account and app-management tasks, and use the kids profile’s Screen time settings for the television’s daily schedule. Treat them as complementary controls rather than two places that edit one shared timer.

Set up an Android TV restricted profile
On a supported Android TV device, the restricted profile is the older, app-focused alternative to a Google TV kids profile. It is useful when you need a PIN and a short list of permitted apps, but its documented controls do not include Google TV’s daily limit, bedtime scheduler, or movie-and-TV rating screen.

- Open Settings.
- Go to Personal → Security & Restrictions.
- Select Create restricted profile.
- Set a PIN when prompted.
- Choose the apps that the restricted profile is allowed to use.
After creation, enter the restricted profile from the Android TV home screen. To change its permissions, open the profile’s Allowed apps list and edit the selection. To return to the unrestricted area, use the profile’s exit command and enter the PIN if requested. Google’s instructions are in Android TV’s restricted-profile help.
Restricted-profile limitations
- The profile cannot access or make purchases in the Play Store.
- It cannot use third-party apps that do not use Google sign-in.
- App selection is the primary control; the Android TV documentation does not describe a daily viewing timer or bedtime schedule for this profile.
If the PIN is forgotten, Google says that exiting the restricted profile requires a factory data reset. That reset erases saved information such as installed apps and channels, so record the PIN securely and treat reset as a last resort.

Choose a Google TV kids profile when time matters
Select this route if you need a recurring schedule, a bedtime cutoff, or a one-time bonus allowance. It is also the better fit when you want Google TV’s own recommendations and Family Library content filtered by movie and TV ratings. Confirm first that your device and region support kids profiles.

Use the Android TV restricted profile when your device does not offer kids profiles or when a PIN-protected list of permitted apps meets your needs. Check compatibility before relying on it: apps without Google sign-in will not work there, and the Play Store is unavailable.
Use app controls in either case
Neither profile replaces controls inside third-party apps. A child may encounter app-generated recommendations or search results even when Google TV’s own rating restrictions are set. For each permitted app, look for a child profile, content-rating menu, viewing PIN, autoplay switch, and search restriction, then test the account while signed in as the child.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The kids-profile option is missing
Kids profiles may be unavailable for a particular model, software configuration, or region. Check whether the device uses Google TV or the older Android TV interface, then look for the restricted-profile path. Because Google does not publish one universal menu path for every manufacturer and model, follow the labels shown on your television and consult its manufacturer documentation if the security menu is absent.
A blocked title still appears
Determine where it appears. If it is a Google TV recommendation or Family Library item, review the child’s Content restrictions. If it appears inside an app’s search results or recommendation row, configure that app’s own parental controls; Google TV’s rating filter does not govern those results.
The child can switch to an adult profile
Enable Kids lock in the child’s profile and verify the adult credentials. Without that lock, selecting another profile may not require an adult check.
The viewing timer does not affect another device
Google TV’s daily limit and bedtime apply to the kids profile on that television. They do not establish a cross-device total. Use Family Link for the separate app-activity and blocking functions it supports, and configure schedules on each Google TV device that needs them.
An app disappears in a restricted profile
Check whether it relies on a sign-in method other than Google sign-in. Android TV restricted profiles cannot use third-party apps that do not use Google sign-in, even if the app is installed on the main profile. Also verify that the app was selected in Allowed apps.
Parent setup checklist
- Identify whether the device presents Google TV or Android TV menus.
- Create a Google TV kids profile when available, or create an Android TV restricted profile on supported devices.
- Allow only the apps the child needs.
- Set Google TV movie and TV ratings under Content restrictions.
- Set a per-day limit and bedtime under Screen time settings when using Google TV.
- Enable Kids lock so leaving the child profile requires adult credentials.
- Open every permitted app and configure its own child, rating, search, autoplay, or PIN controls.
- Test recommendations, search, profile switching, and the time-out behavior from the child’s view.
- Store the restricted-profile PIN or adult credentials securely; a forgotten restricted-profile PIN can lead to a factory reset.
