Which Android Tablet Settings Should You Change First? A Practical Setup Order

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the settings that protect the tablet and your account: install available security and system updates, set a dependable screen lock, confirm a lost-device finder, review sensitive app permissions, and decide what notifications may appear on the lock screen. Then consider optional diagnostics, advertising, and personalization controls. The exact labels differ by Android version, manufacturer, model, work profile, and region, so use the Settings search field whenever a path does not match your screen.

Why there is no single Android tablet checklist

Android tablets do not all expose the same menus. Google’s Pixel Tablet documentation places the relevant controls in Settings > Security & privacy, while Google’s general Android guide notes that some devices combine security and privacy and others separate them. Samsung Galaxy tablets have a manufacturer-specific Security and privacy area, and Samsung warns that not every listed feature is available on every device. Android version, model, region, work profile, and whether the tablet is Wi‑Fi-only or cellular can all change the labels.

Use the order below as a risk-based baseline rather than a demand to change every switch. If you cannot find a menu, open Settings and search for the control name—for example, “security update,” “screen lock,” “device finder,” “permissions,” or “lock screen notifications.”

Change these settings first

1. Install updates and check security status

Updates close known security problems and can change which controls are available. Open the tablet’s security or update area and install any available Android security update and Google Play system update. These are separate update mechanisms in Google’s Pixel Tablet guidance, and Samsung documents separate update paths as well. Availability and timing depend on the device, software version, carrier, and region; an update shown on one tablet may not yet be offered on another.

Lenovo Idea Tab - College Tablet - 11″ 2.5K IPS Touchscreen Display - 90Hz - MediaTek Dimensity 6300-8 GB Memory - 256 GB Storage - Integrated Arm Mali-G57 MC2 - Tab Pen and Folio Case
  • POWER YOUR STUDY, FUEL YOUR PLAY – Discover smarter learning with the Lenovo Idea Tab. Stay campus-ready with all-day battery life, AI-powered apps to enhance your work, and sharp graphics for tv marathons with friends.
  • SMOOTH, POWERFUL, IMMERSIVE – The MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor is more powerful than ever, with the AI-enhanced multitasking you need to stay ahead.
  • CIRCLE IT, SEARCH IT – Use your Lenovo Tab Pen or fingertip to circle items for instant search results or to translate other languages without switching apps. Circle to Search with Google ensures answers are only a circle away.
  • SHARP VIEW, CLEAR SOUND – Experience sharp visuals and immersive sound for study sessions and streaming breaks. With 72% NTSC and quad Dolby Atmos-tuned speakers you can enjoy your study breaks with vivid videos and crystal-clear sound.
  • LEVEL UP YOUR STUDY – Write, organize, sketch, and calculate with four learning apps built to match your flow. Lenovo AI Note, Squid, Nebo, and MyScript Calculator help you stay clear, focused, and ready for every study session.

After updating, review the built-in security status and app scanning. On devices that provide it, Google Play Protect checks installed apps for potentially harmful behavior. Treat the status screen as a check of the tablet’s current protection state, not as proof that every app is risk-free. Google’s Pixel Tablet instructions and Samsung’s security documentation describe these controls here: Pixel Tablet security and privacy settings and Galaxy Security and privacy settings.

  • Install the Android security update if one is offered.
  • Install the Google Play system update if it is listed separately.
  • Open the security status or app-scanning control and resolve any warning you understand.
  • Restart if the tablet requests it, then revisit the update screen to confirm the installed version.

2. Set a screen lock you can use reliably

Choose a PIN, password, pattern, or supported biometric unlock under the device-unlock section. Samsung describes a lock as a way to restrict entry and protect data; biometric unlock may still require a standard PIN, password, or pattern as a fallback. The strongest option is not useful if the owner forgets it or cannot enter it consistently, so choose a credential that fits the tablet’s actual users and environment.

Check the lock settings for an automatic-lock delay and whether the tablet requires the credential after a restart. Labels vary, so search Settings for “screen lock” or “device unlock” if the documented path is different. Do not leave the tablet with only a swipe or no lock when it contains work files, saved accounts, private messages, or payment information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Make sure lost-device recovery is configured

Confirm that a device-finder service is enabled and associated with the account used on the tablet. Google documents a Find My Device control for Pixel Tablet; Google’s Android help may refer to the broader Find Hub experience depending on the software version. Samsung documents lost-device protection through its manufacturer service. Names and availability differ, so verify the option shown on your own tablet rather than assuming that one service exists on every model.

  1. Open Settings and search for “Find My Device,” “Find Hub,” “device finder,” or “lost device.”
  2. Open the result and check that the service is on and connected to the intended account.
  3. Review any location or offline-finding options that the tablet offers and decide whether their privacy trade-off is acceptable.
  4. From another device, sign in to the corresponding account’s device-finding page when practical, so you know which tablet name appears and whether it can be located, secured, or erased.

Google’s tablet-specific instructions are at support.google.com/googlepixeltablet/answer/13555549?hl=en-CA; Samsung’s feature names and availability are described at samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002544/.

4. Review app permissions and recent access

Go through permissions for location, camera, microphone, contacts, files, and other sensitive categories. Android’s Privacy dashboard can show recent permission use on devices that provide it. For each app, ask whether the requested access matches what the app does. Revoke access that has no clear purpose, or select a narrower option such as Only while using the app, Ask every time, or approximate location when those choices are offered and suitable.

  1. Open Settings and search for “Privacy dashboard” or “Permission manager.”
  2. Choose a sensitive category, such as Location, Camera, or Microphone, to see which apps used it.
  3. Open an app that does not need continuous access and change its permission to a less-privileged choice or Don’t allow.
  4. Repeat for the other sensitive categories; an app can have different permissions in each one.

Permission names and controls vary by Android release. Google’s general explanation of security and privacy menus is available at Google Android Help, and Android’s plain-language overview is at Android privacy settings and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Decide what appears on the lock screen

Notifications can reveal message text, names, one-time codes, calendar details, or other private information to anyone near the tablet. In lock-screen notification settings, choose whether notifications appear at all and whether their contents are shown. A practical choice for a shared or portable tablet is to allow notification icons while hiding sensitive details until the tablet is unlocked; the exact choices depend on the Android version and manufacturer.

This setting is independent of app permissions: an app may be allowed to send notifications while the lock screen hides their contents. Review both controls when you want privacy without disabling useful alerts.

6. Review optional diagnostics, advertising, and personalization

After the protective settings above, inspect controls for usage and diagnostics, advertising, and personalization. These options describe data sharing or how experiences are tailored; the official guidance does not establish that every reader should disable them. Read each description, then decide whether the benefit is worth the data-sharing or personalization trade-off for your use.

  • Usage and diagnostics: may share information about how the tablet and its software work.
  • Advertising controls: may limit or reset ad-related personalization without stopping every advertisement.
  • Personalization: may use activity or account information to tailor suggestions and experiences.

Record what you chose if several people use the tablet, because a later account change or reset can make the settings appear different.

If you are setting up a Samsung tablet from scratch

Samsung’s setup sequence adds a few decisions before you reach the full settings review. Read the terms and privacy policy, choose whether to send diagnostic data, connect to Wi‑Fi, create a screen lock, and select light or dark mode. Cellular models can present eSIM or mobile-network steps that do not appear on Wi‑Fi-only tablets.

  1. Connect to a trusted Wi‑Fi network, or complete the cellular setup shown for your model.
  2. Review the terms and privacy policy instead of accepting unfamiliar options blindly.
  3. Choose the diagnostic-data setting that matches your preference.
  4. Create the screen lock before restoring or adding sensitive accounts.
  5. Finish setup, install available updates, then revisit Security and privacy to configure the device finder, permissions, and lock-screen notifications.

Samsung’s current setup instructions are at Set up your Samsung tablet. The sequence and labels can change with the model and software version.

Settings you should personalize later, not blindly change first

Display, battery, and accessibility

Brightness, screen timeout, refresh-rate choices, battery-saving behavior, text size, magnification, color correction, and other accessibility controls depend heavily on the screen, battery capacity, eyesight, mobility, and work habits of the owner. The official guidance does not establish one universal “best” value for these settings. Change them after the security baseline is complete, using the value that makes the tablet comfortable and usable for the person holding it.

Dark mode

Dark or light mode is a preference rather than a security requirement. Samsung includes the choice during setup, but it does not replace the update, lock, finder, permission, or notification checks above.

Work profiles and managed tablets

A work profile or organization-managed tablet can hide, rename, or enforce settings. If a control is unavailable, look for an administrator notice before troubleshooting the tablet as though it were a personal device. Do not remove a management profile simply to expose a setting; that can disconnect work accounts or violate organizational policy.

Troubleshoot a missing or different setting

  • Search Settings: enter the feature name rather than following a phone-specific path word for word.
  • Check the Android version and model: update screens and privacy labels are version-dependent.
  • Look for separate sections: security, privacy, biometrics, notifications, and accounts may be separate menus.
  • Check account state: a device finder may not appear until an account is added and its required service is enabled.
  • Consider region and connectivity: cellular, eSIM, carrier, and regional software can alter setup and availability.
  • Expect unavailable features: Samsung explicitly notes that not all listed security features work on every Galaxy device.

When a menu path in an online guide does not match your tablet, the control name in Settings search is usually more reliable than the menu hierarchy shown for another model.

A compact first-session checklist

Use this sequence whenever you receive a new or reset Android tablet:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect to Wi‑Fi or complete the model’s cellular setup.
  2. Install available Android security and Google Play system updates.
  3. Review the security status and app scanning result.
  4. Create a PIN, password, pattern, and supported biometric unlock combination that you can reliably use.
  5. Enable and verify the available lost-device finder for the correct account.
  6. Review recent permission use and restrict unnecessary location, camera, microphone, contacts, and file access.
  7. Choose how much notification content is visible while the tablet is locked.
  8. Read optional diagnostics, advertising, and personalization controls and choose deliberately.
  9. Only then tune display, battery, accessibility, and appearance preferences to the owner’s needs.

This order puts account access, device recovery, and sensitive-data exposure ahead of cosmetic preferences while leaving room for the genuine differences between Android tablets.
