Then decide whether you need Google Apps (GApps) or MicroG. These are separate choices: security and device-maintenance checks apply to nearly everyone, while Google services depend on the apps and notifications you use.
Menu names differ between Android versions, LineageOS releases and device builds. Android 13 and later may combine controls under Security & privacy; Android 12 and earlier may show separate Security and Privacy sections.

1. Secure the lock screen before doing anything else
A custom ROM installation does not automatically give you a safe lock-screen configuration. Set a primary credential that protects the device if it is lost or taken.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose a primary unlock method
- Open the security area in Settings. Depending on the release, this is Settings > Security & privacy or separate Security and Privacy pages.
- Open the device-unlock or screen-lock control and choose a PIN or password. A long alphanumeric password offers the strongest protection; a sufficiently long PIN is usually a better convenience/security compromise than a short code.
- Add fingerprint or face unlock only if your device supports it and you accept the trade-off. Biometrics are convenience methods, not a replacement for the primary credential, which Android will periodically require again.
Do not remove the primary credential simply because biometric unlock is available. You need the PIN or password after a reboot and for some sensitive operations.

Control what appears while the phone is locked
Review lock-screen notification settings in the same security or notification area. Hide message previews, one-time codes and other private content if another person could see the display. You can normally choose between showing all notification content, hiding sensitive content, or showing no notifications on the lock screen. The exact labels vary by Android version and build.
This setting is independent of app permissions: an app can have legitimate notification access while its previews are still too revealing for your situation.
2. Audit app permissions and LineageOS privacy controls
Permissions should match an app’s actual job. A navigation app may need location while in use; a calculator normally does not need the microphone, contacts or nearby-device access.
Review high-impact permissions by category
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy and find Permission manager. On older releases, use Settings > Privacy > Permission manager.
- Open each category that matters to you: Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos and videos or Files, and Nearby devices.
- Inspect the apps listed as allowed. Change an access level to “only while in use,” “ask every time,” or “not allowed” when that matches the app’s purpose and your usage.
- Recheck apps you installed immediately after the ROM. A clean installation is a good time to remove permissions carried over from an old setup or granted during rushed onboarding.
Do not revoke a permission blindly if doing so breaks a function you need. Instead, test the app after each change and restore only the permission that the feature requires.
Check the Trust and security screens
LineageOS builds include Trust/security and privacy information, although the name and placement can differ. Open the Trust page from the security settings, or use Settings search for “Trust.” Use it to inspect the device’s security state and available privacy controls rather than assuming that every option shown in an online guide exists on your build.

There is no universal need to disable core protections or enable Developer options after installation. Change Developer options only for a specific task you understand; a generic “post-install tweaks” list is not a security requirement.
3. Check updates, then separate OS updates from firmware
Run the built-in updater soon after the first successful boot. Shipping LineageOS builds are required to support upgrades through the native LineageOS Updater and the recovery documented for that device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Find and run LineageOS Updater
- Open Settings and select the LineageOS Updater entry. If you do not see it, use Settings search for “Updater” or “LineageOS.”
- Check for a build and read its version and security-patch information before downloading.
- Install only an update offered for your exact device and current build. Keep the phone charged and follow any reboot prompt from the updater.
If no update is offered, that does not by itself prove the installation is broken. Availability depends on the device, release channel and build status. Read the device page and release information before attempting a manual package.
Know which security date you are looking at
| Layer | What it covers | What LineageOS can update | What you must verify separately |
|---|---|---|---|
| AOSP security patch level | Android’s open-source framework and platform fixes. | Delivered through a LineageOS build when included in that release. | That your installed build has a current date for your device and release. |
| Vendor security patch level | Proprietary components supplied by the phone manufacturer or chipset vendor. | May be included only when the device’s required proprietary components are available. | The vendor patch date shown in Android’s security information and the device guide. |
| Firmware | Device-specific bootloader, modem, vendor and other low-level components. | Not necessarily replaced by a LineageOS system update. | The exact firmware prerequisite in the official installation page for your model and variant. |
A current LineageOS build therefore does not automatically mean every proprietary firmware component is current. Follow the installation guide for the exact model instead of applying firmware from a similar-looking phone.
4. Read the installation page for the exact device
Generic instructions cannot account for model-specific firmware, bootloader, modem or vendor requirements. LineageOS’s official device pages can also document hardware deviations and quirks.

Confirm the model and variant
- Compare the model identifier in Settings > About phone with the identifier in the LineageOS device page.
- Do not assume two phones with the same retail name, or two regional variants, use interchangeable files.
- Read the page’s installation notes and “quirks” section before changing firmware or repeating the installation.
Installation pages for devices such as sunfish and 10.or G illustrate why the guide matters: firmware prerequisites and procedures are device-specific. Those examples do not establish requirements for your phone.
Test hardware that matters to daily use
After setup, place a call, test mobile data, capture a photo, unlock with the fingerprint reader, try NFC if you use it, and check important sensors. The project has device-support requirements, but its support charter also allows documented hardware deviations. A feature that worked in the manufacturer’s software should be verified rather than assumed.
5. Decide deliberately between GApps, MicroG and no Google service layer
Google-service configuration is optional and depends on your apps, notification needs and data preferences. It is not a universal privacy or compatibility answer.
| Choice | When it fits | Important setup condition | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| GApps | You rely on Google apps, Google service APIs or apps that expect the standard Google notification infrastructure. | Install at the point specified by the device guide, normally before the first system boot after flashing. | It adds Google services and their associated account and data flows to the phone. |
| MicroG | You want an alternative service layer for applications that can work with it. | Enable GCM in MicroG if you need push notifications. | Do not assume feature parity with GApps; individual apps can behave differently. |
| No service layer | Your app set does not require Google APIs or push infrastructure. | No additional package is required. | Apps that depend on Google services or push messaging may not work as expected. |
Why installation timing matters
LineageOS performs critical initialization on the first boot. Its FAQ states that if you did not install GApps before that boot, adding them later requires a factory reset and a sideload before booting the system again. Treat this as a setup decision, not a casual afterthought, and follow the exact package and timing instructions for your device.
Set realistic expectations for notifications and apps
LineageOS says push notifications require GApps or MicroG; MicroG users must enable GCM. Even with one of those layers installed, no project setting can guarantee that every banking, payment, DRM or other Google-dependent app will run. Some apps use Play Integrity-related signals to exclude devices, and LineageOS does not alter those validation responses.

6. Avoid risky “finishing touches”
Do not relock the bootloader as a routine step
Relocking can sound like an obvious security improvement, but LineageOS warns that few devices support relocking well. On an unsupported or incorrectly relocked device, the phone may become unusable. Only consider it when the official instructions for your exact model explicitly support the procedure and explain the recovery path.
Do not apply a generic debloat script
Removing system components can break the operating system. Uninstall or disable an app only after identifying whether it is a user-installed app or a system component required by your build. If you want a lean setup, start with ordinary user apps and permissions instead of deleting packages from a guide written for another device.
Do not treat every compatibility failure as a settings problem
An app refusing to install or authenticate may be responding to device-integrity checks rather than a switch you can safely change. Check the app developer’s supported-device policy and the LineageOS FAQ before weakening security or flashing unofficial modifications.
7. A practical first-day sequence
Use this order to avoid redoing work:
- Confirm the exact model identifier and read its official installation notes.
- Set a PIN or password, then configure biometric unlock if wanted.
- Hide sensitive lock-screen notification content.
- Review location, camera, microphone, contacts, files/photos and nearby-device permissions.
- Open Trust/security and privacy information and note any warnings.
- Run LineageOS Updater and record the Android, LineageOS and security-patch versions.
- Check whether the device page requires particular stock firmware or other proprietary components.
- Test calling, cellular data, camera, fingerprint, NFC and other hardware you depend on.
- Choose GApps, MicroG or no service layer before installing your full app set.
- Install your apps gradually and revisit permissions after each group.
8. Troubleshoot the common post-install problems
Push notifications do not arrive
First identify the service path. Without GApps or MicroG, apps that depend on Google push infrastructure may not notify you. With MicroG, verify that GCM is enabled. If the app still fails, its own service requirements may not be supported by your setup.
The updater shows an error or no suitable build
Confirm that the device page matches the model and variant, then check its installation and upgrade notes. Do not flash a package intended for a similar device. If the native updater is not present on a supported build, use the device documentation to determine whether the installation is complete before attempting manual recovery.
Best Value
A camera, fingerprint reader or radio feature is unreliable
Compare the symptom with the device page’s documented quirks and firmware prerequisites. Recheck the relevant firmware rather than assuming a privacy setting caused the failure. Test the function after any approved firmware or system update.
An app rejects the phone
Check whether the app relies on Play Integrity or another device-validation signal. LineageOS cannot promise compatibility for apps that exclude modified or uncertified environments, and changing random security settings is unlikely to provide a supported fix.
You already booted without GApps
Do not simply sideload GApps over the running installation. The LineageOS FAQ requires a factory reset and sideload before booting again when GApps were omitted from the pre-first-boot sequence. Back up anything you need before following the device-specific procedure.

What to change—and what to leave alone
The reliable post-install changes are the ones that reduce exposure or confirm the device is maintained: a strong lock screen, restrained lock-screen notifications, least-privilege permissions, a review of Trust/security status, an updater check, and verification of device-specific firmware and hardware. Google-service packages are an intentional compatibility choice, not a mandatory tweak. Bootloader relocking, system-app removal and indiscriminate Developer-option changes should stay off your checklist unless the exact device documentation gives a supported reason.
