The quickest gains usually come from reducing how far you reach and how many screens you cross: put repeat controls in Quick Settings, choose the navigation style you can use reliably, enable one-handed mode when the top of the display is hard to reach, and schedule notification Modes for recurring quiet periods. The exact labels and availability depend on your Android version, phone maker and installed apps, so use Settings search when a menu does not match these instructions.
What “faster” means in this guide
Android does not publish a universal number of seconds, taps or percentage saved by these settings. The practical benefit is fewer repeated detours: a control you can reach from any screen, a gesture or button arrangement that fits your hand, or a notification rule that runs on a schedule instead of being configured each time.

Think of speed as reduced friction rather than a benchmark. A setting is worth changing when you use its action often, the current route interrupts another task, or the action is difficult to perform one-handed. A rarely used control may not deserve a Quick Settings tile, while a meeting or sleep routine can justify a Mode that runs automatically.

Start with Quick Settings for controls you repeat
Quick Settings is the fastest general-purpose access point because it can expose controls while another app is open. Google describes it as a way to find and change settings from any screen. The panel is also customizable, so you do not have to accept the default tile order.

Customize the panel
- Swipe down from the top of the display.
- Swipe down again to open the full Quick Settings panel.
- Tap Edit. Depending on the phone, this may appear as a pencil icon or an edit command.
- Add tiles you use regularly, remove tiles that add clutter, and drag tiles into an order that matches how often you reach for them.
- Close the editor and test the arrangement from another app. A tile that is easy to find in the editor but buried in the expanded panel is not earning its space.
Google’s documented Quick Settings steps apply to Android 13 and later in some cases. Tile choices can also depend on the device and on apps that expose their own controls. If your panel has a different label or lacks an expected tile, search Settings for the feature name rather than assuming the function is unavailable.
Choose tiles by frequency, not by novelty
- Use a tile for an action you perform repeatedly during the day or need while another app remains open.
- Leave it out when the action is occasional and easy to reach through its normal settings page.
- Reorder periodically after your routines change; the best layout is personal and does not need to match a screenshot from another phone.
Pick the navigation style you can use accurately
Android offers gesture navigation and, on many devices, a three-button navigation option. Neither is universally faster. The useful choice is the one you can discover, perform consistently and use without accidental commands.
Gesture navigation
With gesture navigation, actions are performed by swiping rather than tapping a persistent button bar. Google’s navigation guidance includes swiping from a screen edge to go back. Gestures can leave more display area available and can feel direct once they are familiar, but edge swipes may be triggered accidentally in apps with controls near the edge.
Three-button navigation
Three-button navigation keeps visible controls for common navigation actions. It can be easier to discover and may be preferable if you often misfire an edge gesture or share the phone with someone who expects visible buttons. The trade-off is that the navigation bar occupies part of the display and requires a deliberate tap on a button.

How to decide
| Situation | Approach to try | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| You already use edge swipes comfortably | Gesture navigation | Whether back gestures work reliably in the apps you use most |
| You trigger back accidentally or cannot remember gestures | Three-button navigation | Whether visible buttons reduce mistakes and searching |
| You switch between styles | Keep the style that feels predictable for a full day | Comfort, accidental back actions and familiarity, rather than a claimed universal speed advantage |
Navigation labels and their location vary by manufacturer and Android release. Open the phone’s navigation settings and look for the gesture or button choice; if the path is different, use Settings search for “navigation.”
Enable one-handed mode when reach is the bottleneck
One-handed mode is designed for the moments when your thumb cannot comfortably reach the upper part of a large display. Google describes it as lowering the usable portion of the screen so the top area is easier to reach with one hand. It changes reachability, not the performance of the phone.
Turn it on
- Open Settings.
- Use the Settings search field and enter One-handed mode.
- Open the matching result and enable Use One-handed mode.
- Read the on-screen instructions for the activation gesture or button on your device, then test it in an app where the top controls are normally difficult to reach.
Google notes that the steps are Android-version dependent and that the feature is supported only on some phones. Instructions include Android 12-and-up limitations, so an older or customized build may show a different switch or no feature at all.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Make one-handed mode easier to invoke
Where the device supports it, add One-handed mode to Quick Settings. That places the reachability control beside other frequently used toggles instead of requiring a trip through Settings. Keep the tile only if you switch modes often; otherwise the extra tile can make the panel harder to scan.

When it helps most
- Reading or replying while holding the phone in one hand.
- Reaching top-edge controls on a tall display.
- Using the phone while the other hand is occupied.
If the screen suddenly appears reduced after testing, use the same device-specific gesture or tile to return to the normal layout. The exact exit action is shown in the phone’s one-handed-mode instructions.
Automate recurring quiet periods with Modes
Do Not Disturb, Bedtime and other Notification Modes remove repeated notification-management steps. Instead of silencing the phone manually before every meeting or night’s sleep, configure a schedule or set of filters once and let the Mode apply them when its conditions are met.
Set up a Mode
- Open Settings.
- Open Modes. If that label is not present, search Settings for “Do Not Disturb,” “Bedtime” or “Modes.”
- Choose the Mode that matches the routine.
- Set its filters, such as which notifications are allowed, and add a schedule or other available trigger for the routine.
- Save the configuration and test it once so you know which alerts remain permitted.
Google says configured Modes can also be accessed from Quick Settings, allowing an occasional manual override without reopening the full Settings app. Some of Google’s Mode instructions require Android 14 or later. Menu names, available filters and scheduling choices can differ by device.
Use the right level of automation
- Recurring meeting: use a schedule or other available routine trigger, then allow only the alerts you genuinely need.
- Sleep: use Bedtime or Do Not Disturb with a regular schedule and verify that important contacts or alarms are handled as intended.
- Driving or another occasional activity: use the Mode manually from Quick Settings if a recurring schedule would be too broad.
Review a Mode whenever your work hours, sleep pattern or notification priorities change. A rule that is too restrictive can hide an alert you expected, while one that allows everything removes the point of configuring it.

Add accessibility shortcuts only for features you actually toggle
Accessibility shortcuts can make a specific accessibility feature easier to switch on and off. Supported services may also appear as Quick Settings tiles, but the available features and shortcut methods vary widely by phone and Android version.
Find the available shortcuts
- Open Settings.
- Search for or open Accessibility.
- Select the feature you use and inspect its shortcut options.
- Choose a shortcut method offered by your device, then test it and confirm how to dismiss or reverse the feature.
Do not add every available shortcut automatically. A shortcut earns a place when it replaces a route you repeat, such as enabling a display or interaction aid for a particular task. Too many shortcuts can create accidental activations and make it harder to remember which control does what.

Changing every setting at once makes it difficult to tell which choice helped. Use this sequence to build a layout around your own habits.
- List repeated interruptions. Note the controls you open several times a day, the navigation actions you perform most, and the routines that require the same notification changes.
- Promote only the highest-frequency controls. Add those controls to Quick Settings and order them by use, not by the manufacturer’s default.
- Resolve reach problems. Try one-handed mode if the upper screen is the obstacle; do not change navigation style merely because a screenshot recommends it.
- Choose navigation deliberately. Compare gestures and three buttons for comfort, accidental back gestures and discoverability during normal use.
- Automate predictable quiet times. Configure a Mode for meetings, sleep or another recurring period, then confirm its filters.
- Add one accessibility shortcut if needed. Keep the shortcut for a feature you can name and reverse confidently.
- Recheck after updates or a phone change. Android releases and manufacturer interfaces can move menus, rename controls or add and remove tiles.
Troubleshoot when a setting is missing or different
The Quick Settings tile is not available
Open the panel’s Edit view and check the unused-tile area. Some tiles come from installed apps, so they may not exist until the related app or service is present. If the feature still does not appear, search Settings for its name and check the Android-version requirement.
Best Value
The instructions mention Android 13 or Android 14
Treat the version note as a real limitation, not a typo. Google’s Quick Settings guidance includes Android 13-and-later steps, while some Do Not Disturb and Modes guidance applies to Android 14 and later. An older phone may offer a similar control under another menu or may not support that particular workflow.
One-handed mode cannot be found
Search Settings for the exact phrase “One-handed mode.” If there is no result, the phone may not support the feature or the manufacturer may use a different name. Check the phone’s Android version and device-specific help before adding a substitute shortcut.
A Mode behaves differently from the instructions
Check the Mode’s filters and schedule, then verify which notifications are allowed. Manufacturer interfaces can expose different options even on the same Android release. Use the Quick Settings control for a manual test and return to Settings to adjust the rule.

Quick reference: which setting fits which friction?
| Friction you notice | Setting to try | Access or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatedly opening the same control from different apps | Quick Settings tile | Edit the panel; some documented steps require Android 13 or later |
| Back or navigation actions feel awkward | Gesture or three-button navigation | Availability and labels vary by device |
| Top-screen controls are hard to reach with one hand | One-handed mode | Search Settings for “One-handed mode”; support varies, with Android 12-and-up limitations noted by Google |
| Silencing notifications before the same routine | Do Not Disturb, Bedtime or another Mode | Set up under Settings > Modes; some instructions require Android 14 or later |
| Frequently enabling an accessibility feature | Accessibility shortcut or tile | Find options under Settings > Accessibility; supported features vary |
How to keep the setup useful
Review your Quick Settings order when a control stops being frequent, and remove tiles that create visual noise. Revisit schedules when your routine changes, especially after a job, class or sleep-pattern change. If an update changes a label, rely on Settings search for the feature name instead of following an old menu path. Finally, judge each change by whether it makes your own repeated action easier to discover and perform; Android’s official help pages do not establish a single speed score that applies to every phone or user.
