No single Android switch guarantees that every Gemini automation will keep running in the background. Reliability depends on the feature involved: screen automation inside another app, a Gemini scheduled action, notification handling, a quick device control, or a Google Home routine. Each uses a different permission or owner setting.
Identify the failing feature first, then apply its specific control. Only after those permissions are correct should you inspect Android’s battery and background-use policy. Choosing Unrestricted instead of Restricted can reduce some idle limits, but it consumes more battery and still cannot guarantee execution.

Start with the automation type
“Gemini automation” describes several unrelated mechanisms. The setting that fixes one may have no effect on another. Use this map before changing battery options:

Account, language, device and feature availability can also limit what Gemini supports. A correctly configured phone cannot run an unsupported starter, action or integration.

Gemini screen automation: allow the target app
Screen automation is the feature in which Gemini can read and interact with another app’s visible screen. Its permission is controlled inside the Gemini mobile app, not by a universal Android “automation” switch.
Set the per-app permission
- Open the Gemini mobile app.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Screen automation.
- Select the app Gemini needs to control.
- Set that app to Always allow if you do not want Gemini to ask each time.
The permission applies to the specific target app. Allowing one app does not authorize screen interaction with every other app. Review the list again if the automation moves to a different service.
What “Always allow” does—and does not do
“Always allow” removes the repeated confirmation for that app and lets Gemini read and interact with its screen when the feature is invoked. It is not a promise that Android will leave a task running indefinitely after the display is off, the phone is idle, or the operating system has reclaimed resources. Screen automation still depends on the target app being available and on Gemini supporting the requested interaction.
Notification replies and device controls use Google-app permissions
Notification reading or replies
For Gemini or the Android digital-assistant capabilities hosted by the Google app to read and respond to notifications, grant notification access to the Google app. The exact Android menu wording varies by version and manufacturer, so use the Settings search field for “notification access” if you cannot find it. Confirm that the Google app is enabled in the list, then retry the notification action.

This permission is distinct from screen-automation permission. Giving Gemini access to a messaging app’s screen does not automatically give the Google app permission to read that app’s notifications.
Quick device-setting actions
Some quick controls—such as device settings invoked through the assistant—require the Google app to be selected as the default digital assistant app. In Android Settings, search for “default digital assistant” or “digital assistant app,” select the Google app, and then test the command again. This selection is separate from notification access and from Gemini’s own Scheduled actions list.
Keep Gemini scheduled actions enabled
A scheduled action is managed at the Gemini feature level. In Gemini, open the profile menu and choose Scheduled actions. From that list you can:
- Pause an action temporarily.
- Resume a paused action.
- Edit its timing or details.
- Delete an action you no longer need.
Check this list before changing Android battery settings. A paused, edited or deleted action will not run regardless of whether the Google app is unrestricted. Scheduled actions are therefore a separate troubleshooting branch, not a synonym for battery optimization.

If the action is enabled but fails only after the phone has been sitting unused, continue to the Android background-use checks below. Do not infer from a missed schedule that every Gemini action needs unrestricted battery access; first verify that the scheduled feature itself is active and supported on your account and device.
Google Home and Assistant routines have support and safety limits
Gemini can start some Google Home or Assistant routines by voice or typed command when Google Home is connected. Gemini does not support every routine starter or action, however. A routine can fail because its trigger or one of its actions is outside the supported set, even when Android permissions are correct.
Check the routine itself
- Confirm Google Home is connected to the account and devices used by the routine.
- Verify that Gemini supports the selected starter and each action.
- Check whether Digital Wellbeing Downtime, content filters or Do Not Disturb are suppressing the trigger or output.
- Run a simple supported test routine to separate an unsupported action from a background-execution problem.
Google Assistant Help states: “Routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases.” Do not design a routine whose failure to start or stop could cause injury, damage or a security incident. A smart-home endpoint may be unavailable even when the phone is configured correctly.

When a supported automation works while the phone is active but stalls after it becomes idle, inspect the battery or background-use setting for the app actually responsible for the work. Depending on the Android release and manufacturer, the control may appear under a path similar to Settings → Apps → [app] → Battery, Battery usage or App battery management. Labels and choices are not universal.

Choose the least restrictive suitable mode
- Restricted: Android may curtail or prevent background jobs, alarms and network activity. This is the least suitable choice when an automation must react while the phone is idle.
- Optimized: Android applies its normal power policy. It is the reasonable starting point when occasional delay is acceptable.
- Unrestricted: Android allows more background execution than the other choices. Select it for the responsible app when background reliability matters more than battery life and the feature is otherwise supported.
“Unrestricted” relaxes some limits; it does not create a guarantee. Android can still defer work because of device state, app state, standby bucket, connectivity, a manufacturer policy or a service-specific limit. It may also increase battery use. Apply the setting to the app doing the work—often the Google app, Gemini, Google Home or the target app—not automatically to every app on the phone.
Why idle phones behave differently
Android’s Doze mode can restrict network and CPU activity and defer jobs, synchronization and standard alarms while the device is idle. Maintenance windows later allow some deferred work. App Standby can also defer background network activity for an app that has not been used recently. A user can configure battery-optimization exemptions, but Android documents only partial exemptions: other execution limits can remain.
On AOSP builds, Android’s restricted state prevents an app from running jobs, triggering alarms or using the network except while it is foregrounded. Manufacturers can impose different policies, so a menu choice that works on one phone may be named differently or behave differently on another.
Understand Android’s execution limits
Android Developers describes background limits as dependent on device state, app state and standby bucket. One current resource-limit example gives 10 minutes in a rolling 24-hour period (Android Developers, 2026) for scheduled jobs of an app in the rare standby bucket. That figure is a conditional Android resource example, not a Gemini quota, not a promise that Gemini receives ten minutes, and not a guaranteed execution duration. Android says such values can change in later releases.
This is why removing battery optimization cannot turn a conversational assistant into an always-running service. The operating system balances power, memory, network access and app priority. A foreground interaction may succeed immediately while the same work is deferred after the phone enters an idle state.
A reliable troubleshooting sequence
Follow these steps in order so that a battery change does not hide a feature or permission problem.
- Name the exact behavior. Decide whether it is screen interaction in another app, a scheduled action, notification handling, a quick device command or a Home/Assistant routine.
- Confirm support. Check that the target starter, action, app integration and account or device configuration are supported. For screen automation, open Gemini’s Screen automation list and verify the specific app.
- Fix the feature permission. Set the target app to Always allow for screen automation. For notification work, grant notification access to the Google app. For certain device controls, select the Google app as the default digital assistant.
- Check Gemini’s schedule state. Open the profile menu, choose Scheduled actions and make sure the action is enabled rather than paused, edited incorrectly or deleted.
- Inspect routine restrictions. For Google Home or Assistant routines, check supported starters and actions, Digital Wellbeing Downtime, filters and Do Not Disturb.
- Test while active, then idle. Run the same supported action with the phone unlocked, then repeat after the screen has been off. This distinguishes a feature or permission failure from an idle-policy delay.
- Review background use for the responsible app. If the failure appears only during idle time, avoid Restricted. Choose Unrestricted when the extra battery cost is acceptable, or leave Optimized when occasional deferral is preferable.
- Recheck after updates. Android and Gemini updates can change feature support, resource limits and settings labels. Revisit the relevant permission after a major update instead of assuming the old configuration still applies.
Common mistaken fixes
Granting screen access for the wrong app
Screen automation permissions are per app. Authorizing a shopping app, for example, does not authorize a banking or messaging app. Select the exact target that Gemini must operate.

An unrestricted Google app still cannot read notifications without notification access. Battery policy affects execution time; it does not substitute for a permission.
Treating a scheduled action as a routine
Scheduled actions are managed in Gemini’s profile menu. Home and Assistant routines have their own supported starters, actions and digital-wellbeing conditions. Troubleshoot the system that owns the action.
Assuming “Unrestricted” means guaranteed
Unrestricted is a request for more generous background treatment, not an exemption from every Android or manufacturer limit. Do not use it as evidence that a safety-sensitive action will always execute.
What reliable background operation really means
For Gemini, reliability means matching the right feature permission, keeping the action supported and enabled, and avoiding an unnecessarily restrictive battery state. It does not mean that Android will run arbitrary screen interactions, routines or scheduled jobs indefinitely while the phone is idle. Device state, standby policy, manufacturer behavior and service support remain part of the outcome.
