On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Choose the browser, file manager, or other app that will open the APK, then turn on Allow from this source. Install the APK only if you trust its publisher, and switch the permission off again when you are finished. Other Android phones may use different menu names, so search Settings for “Install unknown apps” if this path is missing.
What “unknown sources” means on Android
An APK is an Android application package. When you obtain one outside the normal Google Play installation flow, Android treats the app that hands the APK to the installer as an unknown source. The permission is not a universal switch that lets every app install software. It is granted to one source app at a time.

For example, if you download an APK in a browser, the browser needs permission. If you open an APK from a file manager, the file manager needs permission instead. Granting access to one app does not automatically authorize every browser, messaging app, cloud-storage client, or file utility on the phone.
Android’s wording can look different across manufacturers and software versions. Google’s general instructions may not work exactly on a customized Android interface. The setting to look for is usually named Install unknown apps, Unknown app installs, or similar; the individual control is commonly labeled Allow from this source.

Pixel instructions: enable installation for one source app
These are the documented steps for Pixel phones. Keep the APK’s source app in mind before changing anything: select the app that will actually open or pass the file to Android’s package installer.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose Special app access. You may need to scroll or use the Apps settings search.
- Tap Install unknown apps.
- Select the source app, such as your browser or file manager.
- Turn on Allow from this source.
- Return to the APK and open it again. Android’s installer should now offer the normal installation prompt, subject to any other security or verification checks.
Some Pixel installation prompts include a Settings button. Tapping it can take you directly to the relevant permission page. Confirm that the app named on that page is the one that supplied the APK; do not enable access for an unrelated app simply because it appears in the list.
Which app should receive the permission?
Use the narrowest possible grant. Select the browser only when the browser downloaded and opened the APK. Select a file manager when you are launching the package from local storage. If an app sends you to another installer or file-handling app, identify the app that Android names as the source and authorize that app rather than enabling several candidates “just in case.”
This per-app design limits the number of programs that can initiate an APK installation. It also explains why an APK may still fail after you enabled the setting for a different app: Android checks the source app associated with the current install attempt.

How to turn the permission off again
Return to Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps, open the source app’s entry, and switch Allow from this source off. Revoking access does not uninstall apps that are already installed; it prevents that source app from starting future unknown-source installations until you authorize it again.
If you regularly install packages for development or testing, leave the permission disabled between sessions and enable it only for the specific source app and installation you intend to perform. This reduces the time during which a downloaded file could trigger an unwanted install.
If your phone is not a Pixel
There is no single menu path that applies to every Android manufacturer, carrier configuration, or software release. A customized interface can move the control under Apps, Security, Privacy, or another special-access section.

Once you locate the page, the logic is the same: choose the individual app that is opening the APK, enable its source permission, complete the installation if the file and developer pass the phone’s other checks, and then return to the same page to revoke access.
“Allow from this source” is not “Allow restricted settings”
Android has another app-specific control called Allow restricted settings. Google documents it separately for sensitive capabilities, with some instructions applying to Android 13 and later. It is not another name for unknown-source installation permission.
Only enable restricted settings when Android specifically presents that control for a trusted app and you understand the capability being requested. Turning it on will not substitute for Allow from this source when the installer is blocked because the source app lacks APK-install permission. Conversely, enabling the source permission does not automatically grant restricted settings.

When troubleshooting, record which control Android is asking for. A prompt that names restricted settings requires a different decision from a prompt that says the source app is not allowed to install unknown apps.

Why enabling the source permission may still not install the app
Unknown-source permission is only one gate. Android can apply additional security controls, including developer verification in some regions and circumstances.
Google’s developer-verification rollout
Google reports that developer verification began in September 2026 for apps downloaded from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Google lists an eventual worldwide rollout for 2027. The countries, participating stores, device requirements, and timing are regional details that can change.
If Android blocks an app because its developer is unverified, switching on Allow from this source may not resolve the block. Google describes a separate advanced-settings process that includes security checkpoints and a protective waiting period. Follow the on-screen instructions only after confirming that the app and publisher are legitimate; the extra flow is intentionally more demanding than the ordinary source-permission toggle.
This produces two independent questions:
- Source permission: Is the app that opened the APK allowed to initiate an unknown-source install?
- Developer verification: Does Android accept the developer under the verification rules that apply to this device, region, and distribution channel?
Passing the first question does not guarantee that the second will pass.

A safe procedure for sideloading an APK
Google recommends using Google Play and warns that downloading from unknown sources can put the device and personal information at risk. Possible consequences include device damage, data loss, and harm to personal information. Treat the permission as an exception for a specific, trusted package rather than a permanent convenience setting.
- Verify the publisher. Check the organization’s official website and confirm that the download is genuinely associated with that organization. If you are unsure about an app you were told to download, Google advises going to the company or organization’s official website.
- Confirm the distribution channel. Prefer Google Play or another app store you trust. Be cautious of links supplied through unsolicited messages, pop-up advertisements, or unknown websites.
- Identify the source app. Decide whether the browser, file manager, or another app will open the APK.
- Grant only that app access. Use the Pixel path or your manufacturer’s equivalent and enable Allow from this source for the selected app only.
- Review the installer prompt. Stop if the package name, publisher, requested permissions, or installation context does not match what you expected.
- Revoke the permission. After the installation, return to the source app’s entry and turn the control off unless you have a continuing, understood need for it.
Troubleshooting checklist
The “Install unknown apps” page is missing
- Search Settings for the exact phrase Install unknown apps.
- Try a search for unknown apps or special app access.
- Check the phone maker’s support documentation for the model and Android version.
- On a managed work or school phone, an administrator may control installation policies; contact the administrator instead of attempting to bypass them.
The toggle is on, but Android still says the source is not allowed
- Reopen the settings page and confirm that the toggle is enabled for the app currently opening the APK, not a different browser or file manager.
- Close and reopen the APK from that same source app.
- If the prompt names Allow restricted settings, treat it as a separate control and enable it only for a trusted app when Android specifically requests it.
- Check whether the message refers to an unverified developer. In regions covered by Google’s verification rollout, the advanced verification flow may be required.
The APK installs but the app will not run
The source permission controls whether the package can be handed to Android’s installer; it does not guarantee that the app is compatible, trustworthy, correctly signed, or permitted to run on your device. Recheck the publisher and package source, remove the app if its behavior is unexpected, and keep the source permission disabled.
What app publishers should know about Google Play
For apps distributed through Google Play, Google’s policy restricts the REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES permission to apps whose core function involves sending or receiving packages and enabling a user-initiated installation. Google says that permission cannot be used for self-updates or unauthorized installation.
This is a distribution-policy rule for app developers, not a user-facing replacement for the Settings path. A compliant Play app still cannot silently install another package, and a user still controls whether a source app may initiate an unknown-source installation.

The practical rule
Enable unknown-source installation for the one app that is handing Android the APK, not for every app on the phone. Verify the publisher through an official source, prefer a trusted store, pay attention to any developer-verification warning, and revoke the permission when the task is complete.
