Which Android phone specs matter for controlling a humanoid robot?

The best Android phone for humanoid-robot control is not defined by a flagship processor or a high-megapixel camera. It is the handset that the robot’s teleoperation software supports, can run the required tracking framework (such as WebXR or ARCore), maintains a stable connection, and gives the operator reliable calibration and stop controls. Check the robot project’s device list and test the complete workflow before buying a phone.

The controlling software determines the phone you need

Humanoid robots do not share one Android control standard. A phone can be a pose sensor, a browser-based control panel, a video viewer, or only one component in a larger teleoperation rig. The software architecture therefore comes before the handset specification.

For example, LeRobot’s phone documentation describes an Android workflow in which a WebXR page streams the phone’s pose and operator inputs. A separate implementation, ArTeleop, uses ARCore visual-inertial tracking. Those are different requirements: a phone suitable for one path is not automatically suitable for the other.

Ask the project maintainer for the exact supported-device and browser list. If the application depends on ARCore, verify the specific model in Google’s ARCore-supported-device information or the project’s own instructions. If it uses WebXR, verify the browser, Android release and permission flow used by that project. Android platform compatibility alone does not certify that an individual robot application will work correctly.

Specification priorities at a glance

Phone characteristic Why it matters What is established
Application and handset compatibility The app may require a particular browser, Android release, sensor combination or AR framework. Must be checked against the robot project; no universal model list is provided.
ARCore support, when required ARCore supplies camera-and-inertial pose tracking for some teleoperation apps. Required by the ARCore-based example; unrelated to a generic camera megapixel rating.
WebXR support, when required A browser can stream pose and control inputs without a native Android app. Used by the documented LeRobot phone path; exact browser compatibility is project-specific.
Stable network connection Commands and feedback have to arrive consistently; jitter can feel worse than a slightly higher but stable delay. TidyBot++ reports an expected average of around 7 ms RTT on 5 GHz Wi-Fi in its described setup, with possible spikes in crowded environments.
Motion sensors and camera access Tracking software estimates phone orientation and movement from these sensors. The reviewed projects do not state a universal sensor, camera-resolution or megapixel threshold.
USB-C data capability It can allow a wired Ethernet fallback if Wi-Fi is congested. Recommended as a situational fallback in the TidyBot++ setup; not a universal requirement.
Battery, display and processor They affect operating time and usability, but only matter after software compatibility is satisfied. No minimum capacity, screen specification, RAM or processor tier is established by the sources.

Two documented Android control paths

WebXR pose streaming

In the LeRobot workflow, the phone opens a WebXR page that reads the handset’s pose and inputs and sends them to the robot-control system. The important checks are whether the phone’s browser exposes the required WebXR features, whether motion permissions are granted, and whether the project’s page recognizes the device. A faster CPU or more camera pixels cannot compensate for a browser that does not provide the required API.

WebXR also makes the network path part of the user experience. The phone is sending control data while the robot side may return status or camera imagery. Test the page on the same access point and in the same room where the robot will operate, rather than assuming that a successful laboratory connection will remain stable in a crowded venue.

ARCore visual-inertial tracking

ArTeleop uses ARCore to combine camera observations with inertial measurements and estimate the phone’s pose. For this approach, ARCore support is a hard compatibility gate. A device can have an excellent camera and still be unusable if its model is not supported by ARCore or if the required sensors are unavailable to the application.

ARCore’s role is pose estimation, not image quality for photography. The reviewed documentation does not show that moving from one camera resolution to a higher one improves robot-control accuracy. Prioritize a supported tracking stack, permission reliability and a repeatable calibration procedure over megapixel counts.

Network behavior is a practical control specification

Teleoperation commands are time-sensitive. A connection that occasionally pauses or reorders packets can make a robot feel unpredictable even when its average latency looks good. Measure the connection with the robot powered on, the intended access point in use and other equipment operating as it will during a session.

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

What the 7 ms figure means

The TidyBot++ usage guide describes an expected average round-trip time of around 7 ms between the phone and a mini PC over 5 GHz Wi-Fi in that project’s setup. It also warns that congestion can produce large latency spikes. Treat 7 ms as a project-specific expectation, not a universal Android requirement or a target that every robot must meet.

Choose the least congested band and access point available, keep the phone within dependable range, and avoid judging responsiveness from average latency alone. A short test that happens to run while the channel is quiet can miss the spikes that occur when several users, cameras or access points share the venue.

When to use wired Ethernet

The same guide recommends a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter when wireless congestion degrades the connection. This option requires a handset with a compatible USB-C data connection, an adapter recognized by Android, and a network layout that places the phone on the robot-control LAN. It is a fallback for that setup, not a mandatory accessory for every Android teleoperation system.

Before relying on a wired adapter, confirm that the robot software permits the phone to use Ethernet rather than requiring Wi-Fi discovery, and check whether the adapter, cable and phone can be secured without restricting the operator’s movement.

Video latency is separate from command latency

ArTeleop’s repository describes optional WebRTC video from a gripper camera. It reports typical video latency of 150–300 ms on a clean LAN and states that this is not suitable for precision peg-in-hole closed-loop teleoperation. That figure applies to the project’s video downlink, not to every Android phone, robot command channel or wireless network.

When a system feels slow, determine whether the delay is in pose commands, video capture, video encoding, network transport or display. A phone can send pose data promptly while showing an image that is several frames old. Conversely, a low-latency video feed cannot fix delayed or unstable movement commands.

Motion sensors and cameras: what to check

Sensor availability

Android’s platform requirements include baseline sensor guidance in the Android 15 Compatibility Definition. Those platform statements describe device compatibility expectations; they do not certify that a particular teleoperation app’s tracking and calibration will work. The app’s own requirements take precedence.

Look for the project’s stated use of an accelerometer, gyroscope, camera or other sensor, then run its calibration flow on the exact handset. Do not infer suitability from a manufacturer’s broad “motion sensor” label. Sensor fusion behavior, permission handling and coordinate conventions can differ between models and software builds.

Camera resolution and optics

The reviewed material establishes no universal minimum camera resolution, frame rate or lens specification. ARCore uses camera imagery as one input to visual-inertial tracking, but the sources do not establish a control benefit from a particular megapixel count. A supported camera pipeline with stable exposure and reliable permission access is more relevant than a headline resolution.

If the application uses a gripper-camera downlink, that camera is usually on the robot, not the phone. The handset’s display and network path then affect how the operator sees that feed, while robot-side camera placement and encoding affect what information is available.

Processor, RAM, display and battery

No reviewed source specifies a universal CPU, GPU, RAM, screen-resolution or battery-capacity minimum for humanoid teleoperation. A phone still needs enough resources to keep the control page or app responsive while tracking and displaying feedback, but buying the highest tier solely for robot control is not supported by the available evidence.

For a long session, practical considerations include a battery that can cover the planned operating period, a display readable at the operating distance, thermal behavior that does not trigger severe throttling, and a case or mount that leaves sensors unobstructed. These are usability checks rather than published robot-control thresholds.

Calibrate the phone and preserve a positive stop

Coordinate-frame mistakes can make a correctly functioning robot feel wrong. Follow the application’s instructions exactly, and test with the robot in a safe, unloaded state before enabling motion.

  1. Open the project’s specified app or browser page. Grant only the motion, camera and network permissions that the software requires, and confirm that the page identifies the handset.
  2. Match the phone orientation to the robot. In LeRobot’s documented procedure, hold the phone screen-up with its top edge pointing in the same direction as the robot gripper. TidyBot++ likewise emphasizes orientation alignment. The exact physical pose may differ in another project, so use that project’s coordinate-frame instructions.
  3. Run calibration without moving the reference frame. Keep the phone in the instructed starting pose while the software establishes its initial orientation. If the robot drifts or moves in an unexpected axis, stop and repeat calibration rather than compensating by leaning the phone.
  4. Enable motion deliberately. LeRobot uses a press-and-hold Move control: movement is enabled while the control is held and stops when it is released. TidyBot++ also describes releasing the control to disable movement.
  5. Test small motions first. Use slow, limited movements with clearance around the robot. Confirm that releasing the control immediately removes the motion command before attempting a larger task.
  6. Recalibrate after changing the mount or operator stance. A different phone case, grip, orientation or browser session can alter the reference frame or sensor behavior.

A positive stop action is a safety feature, not merely a user-interface detail. Keep the release gesture easy to perform, and know the robot-side emergency-stop procedure as well; a phone control button should not be the only protection against an unsafe movement.

Confirm the phone is not being asked to replace the whole robot system

A phone-control mode may still depend on substantial equipment elsewhere. The WeGo-Robotics humanoid teleoperation device guide lists an XR device, router, user computer and robot cameras among the components used by its system. A phone is therefore not automatically a substitute for robot-side compute, sensing, cameras, a router or an XR interface.

Before buying a handset, draw the complete data path:

  • Operator device: phone, browser or native app, motion sensors and display.
  • Network: access point, local LAN, internet requirement, discovery method and optional wired segment.
  • User computer: any workstation needed to run the teleoperation software, visualization or bridge process.
  • Robot side: onboard computer, actuators, safety controller and cameras.
  • Feedback path: telemetry, robot video and any separate XR or controller input.

The 2023 survey Teleoperation of Humanoid Robots: A Survey describes a diverse field rather than a single phone architecture. That diversity is why a phone purchase should follow confirmation of the robot’s supported control mode.

A buyer’s decision process

  1. Name the exact robot software. Record its Android version range, browser or native-app requirement, ARCore or WebXR dependency, and supported handset list.
  2. Check tracking compatibility. For ARCore projects, verify the model’s ARCore support. For WebXR projects, verify the specified browser and motion-permission behavior.
  3. Verify physical sensors. Compare the project’s sensor requirements with the handset specification, then complete calibration on the real device.
  4. Test the intended network. Measure responsiveness and stability at the robot’s operating location. Look for jitter and dropouts, not only a single average ping.
  5. Plan a fallback. Determine whether the project supports USB-C Ethernet, another access point or a different control device if wireless conditions deteriorate.
  6. Check feedback needs. If video is required, test its latency and frame stability separately from command latency. Confirm whether the phone is expected to display robot-camera video or whether another screen is part of the system.
  7. Validate safety controls. Confirm the enable gesture, release-to-stop behavior, robot emergency stop and recovery procedure before normal operation.

Troubleshoot by symptom before replacing the phone

The app cannot start tracking

  • Confirm that the handset is on the project’s supported-device list.
  • For ARCore software, verify ARCore support and install or update the required services if the project instructs you to do so.
  • Check camera and motion permissions, then repeat the exact calibration pose.
  • Remove cases, mounts or screen protectors that obstruct cameras or sensors.

The robot responds late or in bursts

  • Test the access point for congestion and compare the result at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz only when the project supports both.
  • Move closer to the access point and reduce competing traffic.
  • Determine whether the delay is in commands or video; the two paths can have different latency.
  • If the documented setup supports it, test a USB-C Ethernet adapter as a wired fallback.

Movement is rotated or goes in the wrong direction

  • Stop using the motion control and return the robot to a safe state.
  • Repeat the orientation alignment with the phone’s top edge and screen direction specified by the software.
  • Recalibrate after changing hand position, mounting angle or browser session.
  • Do not “learn” an offset by holding the phone at an incorrect angle; that can make later movements less predictable.

Video is too delayed for a precise task

  • Measure the camera downlink independently from pose-command latency.
  • Reduce competing LAN traffic and check the robot camera’s encoding settings if the project exposes them.
  • Respect the project’s stated operating limits: ArTeleop’s 150–300 ms clean-LAN video figure is explicitly unsuitable for precision peg-in-hole closed-loop work.

What is not established as a universal requirement

The available documentation does not provide a comparative ranking of Android phone models, a minimum RAM or processor tier, a universal battery capacity, a camera megapixel threshold, or a handset benchmark that predicts humanoid-control performance. It also does not show that a newer flagship will outperform a less expensive supported phone when both run the same tracking stack on the same network.

Use those unknowns as a reason to verify, not to guess. The defensible purchase sequence is software compatibility first, tracking support second, network testing third, and comfort and endurance after the control loop works reliably. If the robot project cannot state which Android devices and browsers it supports, ask for that information or test a loaner handset before committing to hardware.
