Which Android Permissions Should You Review to Prevent Screen-Sharing Scams?

Start with Accessibility access, requests to enable restricted settings, and any active MediaProjection session shown by Android’s system controls. Accessibility access can let an app read what is on your screen and interact with other apps. Restricted-settings prompts can unlock sensitive capabilities. MediaProjection is the mechanism used for screen capture, casting, and sharing, and Android gives you system controls to stop an active session. Review these settings whenever an unexpected caller, text, or app installation directs you to change a device setting.

The three checks that matter most

There is no single, universal Android menu called “screen-sharing permissions.” The relevant controls are split between special app access, installation safeguards, and a live system session. Menu names and locations vary by phone maker, Android version, and interface build, so use the Settings search field when a path below does not match your phone.

Setting or control Why it matters What to review Platform notes
Accessibility access An enabled accessibility service may read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf. Every enabled downloaded service; whether you recognize the app, expect its function, trust its developer, and understand its disclosure. It is a sensitive special setting, not a normal runtime permission with one fixed path.
Restricted settings Allowing a restricted setting can grant an app access to sensitive information or capabilities. Any installation prompt that asks you to enable a setting, especially when the request comes from an unfamiliar app or a caller. Google’s guidance includes steps that apply on Android 13 and later.
MediaProjection session This is Android’s user-approved mechanism for screen capture, sharing, casting, and recording. Quick Settings and the status bar for an active projection; stop anything you did not knowingly start. Android requires consent for each session. Android 15 QPR1 adds a prominent status-bar stop chip.
Google Play Protect It can warn about potentially harmful apps and may block installation of some unverified apps using sensitive permissions. Whether Play Protect is enabled and what warning it displays for the app. It is an additional layer, not proof that an app is safe or a substitute for reviewing access.

1. Audit Accessibility access first

Accessibility access deserves the highest priority because it can expose information displayed by other apps and permit interaction with those apps. Google describes the capability plainly: “With access to accessibility settings, the app can read content on your screen and interact with apps on your behalf.” That power is necessary for legitimate assistive technologies, automation tools, and some specialized utilities, so the presence of the permission alone does not establish that an app is malicious.

How to find enabled services

  1. Open Settings and search for Accessibility.
  2. Open the Accessibility section, then look for a page named Downloaded apps, Installed services, Accessibility services, or similar wording.
  3. Review each service shown as On or Allowed. Open its details to see the app name and the capability description.
  4. Turn off access for an app you do not recognize, no longer need, or cannot connect to a legitimate purpose. Confirm the warning Android displays.

There is no universal manufacturer-independent navigation sequence. A Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, Xiaomi, or other device may place the same control under a different subheading. Settings search is safer than following an assumed path from another phone.

How to judge a legitimate service

  • Purpose: The service should be necessary for the app’s stated core function. A screen reader, switch-access tool, or other disability-support feature has a different justification from an unrelated utility that suddenly requests the same access.
  • Identity: Check the developer name, app listing, and support information. An app-store listing is not, by itself, proof of safety.
  • Explanation: The app should explain what it reads or controls and why, before you enable the service. Vague language, urgency, or instructions from an unsolicited caller are warning signs.
  • Control: You should be able to disable the service without being pressured, locked out of your phone, or told to keep it enabled indefinitely.

Do not blindly disable a service that someone relies on for disability access. Instead, verify the app’s identity and function, and remove only access that is unrecognized or unnecessary.

2. Treat restricted-settings requests as a stop signal

Android may restrict certain settings for newly installed apps. An app can then ask you to enable a restricted setting before it works. Google warns that enabling restricted settings can give an app access to sensitive information and recommends doing so only when you trust the developer. Some of Google’s instructions apply specifically to Android 13 and later.

What to do when an app asks for the setting

  1. Pause the installation or setup. Do not follow a caller’s instructions while they remain on the line, and do not assume the prompt is routine.
  2. Identify the app independently. Open its store listing from a trusted route, check the developer, and compare the requested capability with the app’s advertised function.
  3. Ask whether the access is genuinely required. A request that is unrelated to the app’s core job is a reason to refuse it.
  4. Decline when the developer is unfamiliar or the explanation is unclear. You can uninstall the app if it will not operate without an access level you do not accept.

Unsolicited contact is an important part of the decision. If someone unexpectedly calls or messages and directs you to install an app or change a setting, stop and verify the organization through a known official website, a trusted app-store listing, or a phone number you obtained independently. Do not use a link or callback number supplied in the suspicious message as your only verification.

3. Check for an active MediaProjection session

MediaProjection is Android’s mechanism for capturing or sharing screen content. It is not a permanent toggle that an app can silently acquire: Android asks the user for consent before granting an app a MediaProjection token for a session. A scammer can, however, pressure a user into approving the system prompt and then keep the session running while the user is distracted.

Stop sharing from Quick Settings

  1. Swipe down to open Quick Settings. You may need to swipe down twice to see the full panel.
  2. Look for an indicator describing screen sharing, casting, recording, or projection. The exact label depends on the phone and Android build.
  3. Open the indicator and choose the system command to Stop, Disconnect, or otherwise end the session.
  4. Recheck the panel after stopping. If an app immediately asks to start sharing again, decline and investigate that app.

Android Developers documentation states that the operating system displays active MediaProjection tokens in Quick Settings and lets users withdraw a token at any time. This control is separate from the Accessibility list: an app can have no accessibility service enabled and still have a live, user-approved projection session.

Use the Android 15 QPR1 status-bar chip

On Android 15 QPR1 and later, an ongoing projection shows a prominent status-bar chip. Tap the chip to stop sharing, casting, or recording. This gives you a direct way to interrupt a session without searching through an app’s settings. Projection also stops automatically when the screen locks on these releases, according to Android’s developer documentation; do not rely on that behavior instead of stopping a session you did not authorize.

4. Share an app window instead of the whole display when possible

Android 14 (API level 34) introduced a user choice between sharing one app window and sharing the entire display. Choose the single-app option when it is sufficient for the task. App-window sharing excludes system UI elements such as the status bar, navigation bar, and notifications from the shared output, reducing accidental exposure outside the selected app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

App-only sharing is a limit on the capture area, not a guarantee that no sensitive information will be exposed. Anything visible inside the selected app can still be shared, including account details, messages, documents, or one-time codes. Some manufacturers or older builds may not expose the choice, so confirm what Android shows on your device before approving the session.

5. Use Play Protect as a supporting check

Google Play Protect checks installed apps, warns about potentially harmful software, and may prevent installation of an unverified app that requests sensitive permissions commonly targeted in financial fraud. If you are concerned about an app, open the Play Store’s Play Protect area and run or review its scan status according to the controls shown on your phone.

A clean result is not a safety certificate. Play Protect can miss a new, repackaged, or socially engineered scam, and it cannot tell whether you personally intended to grant an otherwise legitimate capability. Continue to review Accessibility access, restricted-setting prompts, and active projection indicators.

Permissions that do not, by themselves, prove screen sharing

Camera, microphone, contacts, and similar runtime permissions can be sensitive, but the official Android guidance for this issue does not establish a universal rule that any one of them grants remote viewing of your display. Do not treat every permission as equivalent to screen capture, and do not assume that revoking unrelated permissions will end an active projection.

A practical review after an unexpected call or message

  1. End the conversation. A legitimate bank, government office, or support team should not require you to keep an unsolicited caller on the line while you grant powerful access.
  2. Do not install the directed app. If it is already installed, avoid opening it until you have checked its identity.
  3. Search Settings for Accessibility. Record which downloaded services are enabled, and disable unfamiliar or unnecessary services.
  4. Review the app’s special-access requests. If Android displays a restricted-settings warning, decline unless you independently trust the developer and the function clearly requires it.
  5. Inspect Quick Settings and the status bar. Stop any screen-sharing, casting, or recording session you did not knowingly start.
  6. Check Play Protect. Follow any warning or uninstall recommendation, but do not treat a no-warning result as clearance.
  7. Verify the organization independently. Use an official site or a trusted app-store route, not contact details supplied by the suspicious person.
  8. Change credentials from a clean device if necessary. If you entered passwords, payment details, or one-time codes while an untrusted app had access, contact the affected service through its official channel and follow its account-security procedure.

How to evaluate remote-support and accessibility tools

Legitimate remote-support software and assistive technologies may need powerful access. Evaluate the request using the same questions rather than assuming that a familiar category is automatically safe.

Question What a satisfactory answer looks like Warning sign
Does the core function need screen access? The capability directly enables the advertised support or accessibility function. The app is unrelated to support or accessibility but asks for broad screen control.
Who developed it? You can identify the developer and verify it through an independent, trusted channel. The developer identity is opaque, impersonates an organization, or exists only in the caller’s instructions.
Is consent specific? The app explains what will be read or controlled, when it occurs, and how to stop it. You are told to approve every prompt quickly or keep access enabled “for security.”
Can the shared area be limited? Android offers an app-window choice and that scope is enough for the task. The person insists on whole-display sharing without explaining why.
Can you stop immediately? Quick Settings or the Android 15 QPR1 status-bar chip clearly exposes a stop control. The app hides the session, blocks Settings, or tells you not to use system stop controls.

Why Google Play policy is relevant—but not a safety guarantee

Google Play policy requires sensitive permissions to be necessary for core functionality, requested in context, and limited to user-consented purposes. Its Accessibility API rules prohibit bypassing Android’s platform security and privacy controls or manipulating the interface deceptively. Apps that are not accessibility tools must meet applicable disclosure and consent requirements, and developers are expected to use narrower APIs when those are sufficient.

Those requirements help explain why an unexpected Accessibility request deserves scrutiny, but policy compliance does not prove that a particular installed app is safe. Your decision still depends on the app’s identity, purpose, explanation, and the active controls visible on your phone.

Troubleshooting when the controls are hard to find

The Accessibility menu is missing

Use Settings search for “Accessibility,” “installed services,” or “downloaded apps.” If the phone is managed by an employer, school, or family administrator, an administrator may control some settings. Check the device’s Android version and manufacturer interface before assuming the service is absent.

You cannot find a projection indicator

Open the complete Quick Settings panel rather than the compact row, and look for terms such as casting, recording, sharing, or projection. On Android 15 QPR1 and later, check the status bar for the projection chip. If you still cannot identify the session, lock the screen, unlock it, and inspect the system indicators again; do not approve a new capture prompt while troubleshooting.

An app keeps requesting access after you decline

Repeated prompts are not a reason to surrender the setting. Close the app, uninstall it if appropriate, and run Play Protect. Recheck Accessibility services and active projection after removal. If the app was installed at someone else’s direction, verify the supposed organization independently before reinstalling anything.

A compact checklist for regular reviews

  • Search Settings for Accessibility and know every enabled downloaded service.
  • Disable services that are unrecognized, unnecessary, or inconsistent with the app’s stated purpose.
  • Decline unexplained restricted-settings requests, particularly from newly installed apps.
  • Check Quick Settings for active casting, recording, or screen projection.
  • On Android 15 QPR1 or later, use the status-bar chip to stop projection immediately.
  • On Android 14 or later, select one app window instead of the whole display when that is sufficient.
  • Keep Play Protect available as a warning layer, but do not rely on it alone.
  • Verify unexpected callers, texts, and app instructions through an official channel you found independently.

What to remember

Reviewing Android’s screen-sharing risk is not about hunting for one magic permission. Start with Accessibility access, treat restricted-setting prompts as sensitive, and inspect the system UI for a live MediaProjection session. Use app-only sharing when available, stop sessions with Android’s controls, and judge every request against the app’s purpose and developer identity. These checks address the ways a scammer is most likely to obtain or use screen access without confusing unrelated permissions with screen capture.
