For the best practical balance, leave Location Accuracy on, keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning enabled when you need dependable indoor or urban positioning, and give each app only the precision it needs. Use precise location for navigation and other tasks that require an exact position; use approximate location for apps that only need your general area. Review background access, and turn on Battery Saver when runtime matters more than immediate background updates.
Android does not publish a universal battery percentage for any one location switch. The effect depends on your phone, software build, signal conditions and which apps request location, so treat battery changes as a device-specific trade-off rather than a guaranteed saving.

The settings that matter most
Android location is controlled at several different levels. Location Accuracy determines which signal sources the system may combine. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning add nearby-radio observations. An app’s precise or approximate permission determines how much detail that particular app receives. Background permission controls whether it can continue requesting updates when you are not actively using it. Battery Saver changes broader phone behavior, including background activity and some connections.
Those controls are complementary, not interchangeable. Turning off Location Accuracy does not automatically revoke an app’s permission, and selecting approximate location for an app does not disable the phone’s ability to calculate a precise fix for another app.

How Location Accuracy improves a fix
On devices with Google Play services, Android’s Location Accuracy service can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular network towers and sensor data such as the accelerometer, barometer and gyroscope. Google says this helps the phone estimate location more quickly and accurately, especially indoors or near large buildings where satellite signals are obscured. The available radios and sensors differ by device. See Google’s explanation of Android location settings.
With Location Accuracy disabled, the phone may still use GPS and sensors, but the service no longer contributes its wireless-signal inputs. Google warns that this can affect the accuracy or availability of features such as mapping and finding a lost device. Disabling the switch therefore should not be treated as a dependable battery optimization: Google’s guidance does not provide a controlled battery comparison or a percentage saving for this change.
When to leave it enabled
- Turn-by-turn navigation, ride pickup or delivery tracking where the route must update promptly.
- Indoor positioning, underground entrances, dense city streets or areas surrounded by tall buildings.
- Finding a misplaced phone, where a location estimate may be needed even when GPS reception is poor.
When disabling it might be reasonable
If you rarely use location and prefer to remove the wireless-signal component, you can test Location Accuracy off. Expect a possible reduction in speed, precision or availability, and judge the result on your own phone rather than assuming a fixed battery gain.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Choose Location Services.
- Tap Location Accuracy.
- Switch Improve Location Accuracy on or off.
Android 11 and older
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location.
- Open Advanced.
- Tap Location Accuracy and change the setting.
Phone makers can rename or move these menus. If you do not see the path above, use the Settings search box for Location Accuracy or Location Services. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning: useful in signal-poor places
Scanning is a separate control from Location Accuracy. When enabled, the phone can look for nearby Wi-Fi access points and Bluetooth devices and make those observations available to location services. Nearby signals are often useful where GPS is weak, such as inside buildings or among high-rises.
Android 12 and newer
- Open Settings > Location > Location Services.
- Tap Wi-Fi scanning or Bluetooth scanning.
- Enable or disable the relevant switch.
Android 11 and older
- Open Settings > Location.
- Tap Wi-Fi scanning or Bluetooth scanning.
- Change the switch for the radio you want to control.
Google describes what these scans do but does not quantify their battery cost or the saving from turning them off. Keep them enabled when location quality matters in places with usable nearby signals. If you mostly keep location unused and are trying to extend runtime, you can disable one scan at a time and observe your own phone; present that as a personal experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
Choose precise or approximate location per app
On Android 12 and later, the system-wide accuracy service and an app’s permission answer different questions. Location Accuracy controls the inputs Android can use to estimate a position. The app permission controls whether that app receives a precise position or only an approximate one. Google’s permission guidance is available at Manage location permissions for apps.
Use precise location for task-critical apps
Choose precise location for turn-by-turn navigation, emergency or safety tools that need your position, and any app whose function depends on an exact destination or route. Precise permission does not force the app to use GPS continuously; it allows the app to request the detail it needs.

Use approximate location for general context
Approximate location is suitable for weather, local news, shopping availability, social discovery and similar features that need a region rather than a doorstep. Google describes the approximate area as about 3 square kilometres. The app can still know the general area while being denied a pinpoint coordinate.
Change an app’s permission
- Open Settings and go to Location.
- Open the list of apps with location access (the label may be App permissions or similar).
- Select an app.
- Choose the least-privileged option that supports its purpose, then select precise or approximate location when that option is shown.
Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android release. If an app stops performing a location-dependent task after you select approximate access, restore precise access only for that app instead of changing the system-wide accuracy setting.
Check background location separately
An app that can access location in the background may request updates while its screen is closed. Review every app that asks for continuous access and remove background permission when updates outside active use are unnecessary. Keep background access for services that genuinely need unattended updates, such as an active navigation session or a safety feature; for occasional lookups, limit access to use while the app is open when your Android version offers that choice.
This review often provides a more targeted privacy and battery adjustment than disabling Location Accuracy for the entire phone, because it changes which apps can make requests rather than removing useful signal sources for all apps.

What Battery Saver changes
Battery Saver is a broad power-management mode, not a location-accuracy switch. Google says it limits or turns off background activity, and that some features, network connections and app behavior may be delayed. Location updates requested while an app is inactive can therefore arrive later when Battery Saver is on. Google’s battery guidance also warns that prolonged GPS use can consume substantial power; see Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.
Use Battery Saver when runtime is the priority
Enable it before a long day away from a charger, during travel or when the battery is already low. Keep it off when you need timely background tracking, immediate synchronization or uninterrupted navigation and the phone has sufficient charge.
Do not use it as a precision guarantee
Battery Saver may reduce how often an app runs, but it does not create a more accurate location estimate. If navigation becomes sluggish, check whether Battery Saver is delaying the app before changing Location Accuracy or scanning.
Compare the controls before changing them

Recommended setups for common situations
Everyday balance
- Keep Improve Location Accuracy on.
- Leave Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning on if you regularly use location indoors or in cities.
- Give navigation and safety apps precise access.
- Give general-purpose apps approximate access where possible.
- Restrict background access for apps that do not need continuous updates.
- Leave Battery Saver off during normal navigation and enable it when preserving charge becomes more important.
Navigation through difficult signal conditions
- Keep Location Accuracy and the scans enabled before starting the route.
- Confirm the navigation app has precise permission.
- Avoid Battery Saver if delayed updates would make the route unusable.
Privacy- and runtime-focused use
- Use approximate permission for apps that only need a broad area.
- Remove background access from apps that do not provide an essential unattended feature.
- If location is rarely needed, test Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning off separately and monitor whether any location task you actually use suffers.
- Use Battery Saver when you accept delayed background behavior.
How to test battery impact on your own phone
Because there is no official setting-by-setting battery percentage, test one change at a time. First record your normal screen-on time, network conditions and the apps that request location. Then change only one control, use the phone in a similar routine for a comparable period, and inspect the battery-use screen. Repeat with the original setting restored before testing the next control.
Record two outcomes, not just the battery level: how long the phone lasted and whether the location tasks you care about remained reliable. A setting that saves a small amount of charge but causes missed updates may be a poor trade for navigation, tracking or safety. Conversely, a scan that makes no visible difference on your phone can remain enabled if it improves indoor fixes.
Troubleshoot accuracy without disabling everything
The position is wrong indoors
Check that Location Accuracy is enabled, then verify Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning. These are the conditions in which nearby wireless signals and sensors can supplement obstructed GPS.
An app shows only a broad area
Open that app’s location permission and select precise location if the task requires an exact position. Changing the system-wide Location Accuracy switch will not override an app that has been granted approximate access.

Check Battery Saver and the app’s background permission. Either can limit when the app runs, even though the phone is capable of calculating a location.
Turning off Location Accuracy did not solve battery drain
Look for apps with frequent background requests and for prolonged GPS sessions. Google’s guidance does not promise a predictable saving from disabling Location Accuracy, so investigate the requesting apps and usage pattern instead of repeatedly toggling the system switch.
What is and is not established about battery savings
Google’s Android help documents explain the function of these controls but do not publish a controlled comparison showing how many minutes or what percentage each toggle saves. Battery behavior varies with handset hardware, Android build, radio availability, indoor or outdoor conditions and app request frequency. Any claim that a particular switch saves a fixed amount should therefore be treated as unsupported unless it comes from a test performed under clearly stated conditions on the same device.
Bottom line
For most people, the right starting point is Location Accuracy on, scanning on where nearby signals help, precise permission only for apps that need an exact position, and background access limited to genuine continuous-use cases. Turn on Battery Saver when extending runtime outweighs prompt background updates. This combination preserves the inputs that make location dependable while narrowing unnecessary app access, without promising a battery percentage that Android’s published guidance does not provide.
