For a cleaner Android home screen, remove shortcuts you rarely use, delete pages that no longer serve a purpose, group related apps only when folders make them easier to find, and keep widgets that save a real step. Then tune the icon grid and app-suggestion behavior to match how you actually open apps. These changes make everyday access faster by reducing search and tapping, not by increasing the phone’s processing speed; the available documentation does not establish a measurable performance gain from decluttering.
Android menus vary by phone, Android version, and launcher. The Pixel paths below are documented examples, while the general principles work on most launchers. Removing an icon from the home screen does not uninstall the app.

What “faster” means on a launcher
A launcher controls the home screen, app list, widgets, folders, and many of the gestures used to reach them. A well-organized layout shortens the time between unlocking and opening the thing you want: your most-used apps are visible, related apps have predictable locations, and useful information appears without opening another app.

That is different from making Android render faster or freeing a meaningful amount of storage. The sources for these settings do not report a benchmark or guaranteed reduction in CPU, memory, or battery use. Treat “faster” here as faster to recognize, tap, and launch.

Make a quick inventory before changing anything
Spend a minute identifying what deserves a permanent place. Look at the first page and ask three questions:
- Which apps do you open most days?
- Which shortcuts or widgets save a step that you genuinely repeat?
- Which items are duplicates, forgotten, or easier to reach from the app drawer?
Keep a rarely used app installed if you still need it; move its shortcut rather than deleting the app. Android’s general instructions cover apps, shortcuts, widgets, folders, and home-screen pages, with some steps limited to Android 14 and later: Google Android Help: Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens.
1. Curate the first home-screen page
Start with the page you see after unlocking. Remove duplicate shortcuts, games you open once a month, and apps that are already easy to reach from the app list. On most launchers, press and hold an icon, then choose Remove or its equivalent. Choose Uninstall only when you intend to delete the app from the device.
Recommended Free Tools
Remove versus uninstall
- Remove: takes the shortcut off the home screen while leaving the installed app available in the app drawer or list.
- Uninstall: removes the application itself, along with its local data according to the app and Android’s uninstall behavior.
If you are unsure, use Remove. You can always add the app shortcut again from the app drawer, while reinstalling may require a download, sign-in, or restored data.
Choose a small, stable set of favorites
Place the apps you open repeatedly where your thumb naturally lands. A fixed group is easier to build muscle memory for than a constantly changing collection. Keep names and positions predictable; a clean page is not useful if you must scan every icon to identify it.
2. Remove empty pages and use folders deliberately
Extra pages create more swipes and make it harder to remember where an app lives. Move the apps, shortcuts, widgets, and groups off a page that no longer has a purpose. Android Help says the page disappears once those items have been moved away.

When a folder helps
Create a folder by dragging one app onto another, then add related apps if your launcher supports that gesture. Good folder candidates share a clear task, such as travel, finance, or media. A folder is counterproductive when it becomes a miscellaneous drawer containing dozens of unrelated icons; opening it and hunting through the contents takes longer than using the app list.

- Page one: your daily apps, one or two high-value widgets, and no “maybe someday” shortcuts.
- Page two: optional folders for less frequent categories or a calendar and task view.
- Additional pages: keep only pages with a distinct purpose, such as work, travel, or a temporary project.
On launchers that show a page overview, long-press an empty area and swipe through the page thumbnails. Remove or move a page only after checking that its widgets and folders have been relocated.
3. Adjust the icon grid and layout
Grid density is a trade-off, not a universal speed setting. A denser grid fits more shortcuts and reduces the number of pages; a more open grid makes icons easier to distinguish and tap, especially on a smaller display or for anyone who benefits from larger targets.
| Layout choice | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Denser grid or smaller icons | You want more frequently used apps visible on one page. | Icons and labels can be harder to identify or tap accurately. |
| More open grid or larger icons | You prioritize recognition, readability, or comfortable touch targets. | Fewer items fit, so you may need folders or another page. |
| Launcher default | You want predictable spacing and no extra tuning. | It may not match your preferred balance of density and clarity. |
Pixel path for changing layout
On a Pixel phone, press and hold an empty area of the home screen, choose Wallpaper & style, swipe to the home-screen view, select Layout, choose an icon-size option, and tap Apply. This documented path is specific to Pixel’s launcher; another manufacturer may call the control Home screen layout, Grid, Icon size, or something similar. Pixel’s controls are described in Google Pixel Help: Add apps, shortcuts & widgets to your Home screens.
Check labels before hiding them
Some launchers offer label or icon-display controls, but label settings are not universal. Removing text can look cleaner while making unfamiliar icons harder to identify. If you test a label-free arrangement, keep it only if you can reliably recognize the icons without trial taps.
4. Decide whether app suggestions help you
Suggestion systems can place recently or frequently used apps, and sometimes apps associated with routines, where the launcher predicts you will need them. That can reduce searching when your habits change. The downside is a less stable layout: an icon may move or appear when you did not deliberately choose it.

Pixel suggestion controls
Pixel’s Home settings include controls for suggestions in the app list and on the home screen. Long-press an empty area, open Home settings, and look for the suggestion options. Turn them on if predicted apps are useful; turn them off if you prefer a fixed set of favorites. Google documents these controls, including the distinction between app-list and home-screen suggestions, in its Pixel help page.
Fixed favorites versus dynamic suggestions
| Preference | Choose this when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed favorites | You value consistent positions and deliberate control. | You maintain the row yourself; on Pixel, Google says manual additions require turning off suggestions. |
| Dynamic suggestions | Your daily apps vary by time, place, or routine. | The launcher surfaces likely apps, but the arrangement is less predictable. |
Try one mode for several days rather than switching every few minutes. The right choice is the one that reduces the number of searches you personally perform.
5. Keep only widgets that earn their space
A widget belongs on the home screen when its glanceable information or direct action saves you from opening an app. Examples include a next-calendar-event view, a weather snapshot you check repeatedly, or a playback control you use throughout the day. A widget that you never read is visual noise and a large obstacle to placing useful shortcuts.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Resize before removing
Press and hold a widget. If resize handles appear, drag them to show the amount of information you need while preserving room for essential apps. Android Developers explains that widget resizing changes how much content can be displayed and how the widget fits the layout; Android Help notes that resizing exists only when both the widget and launcher support it. See Android Developers: App widgets overview.
Make the smallest useful version your default. A calendar widget that shows one upcoming event may be enough; expanding it to a full agenda is justified only if you actually use that information from the home screen. If no handles appear, the widget is not resizable in that launcher, so move it, replace it with a smaller variant, or remove it.
Watch for duplicate information
Do not keep two widgets that display the same weather, calendar, battery, or news information. Choose the one with the clearest update behavior and the action you use most. Combining several large widgets can push frequently used apps onto another page, defeating the goal of quick access.

6. Find your launcher’s own settings
Menu names and gestures differ among manufacturer launchers and third-party launchers. The most reliable starting point is to press and hold an empty part of the home screen and look for Home settings, Launcher settings, or a gear icon. Common controls include grid size, icon appearance, suggestions, notification dots, gestures, and default-home-app selection, but any particular launcher may omit some of them.
Android uses one default launcher at a time. Microsoft’s documentation, for example, describes a separate Launcher Settings area and device-specific behavior in Using Microsoft Launcher on Android. This illustrates why a menu path from one launcher cannot be assumed to exist on another.
Confirm the default launcher before troubleshooting
- Open Android Settings and search for Default home app, or open the Apps section and find the default-app controls.
- Check which launcher is selected.
- Open that launcher’s home screen, long-press an empty area, and change settings there.
- If a setting is missing, check the launcher’s own help documentation rather than repeatedly changing unrelated Android settings.
Switching launchers can change widget support, gesture behavior, icon placement, and backup or restore behavior. Record your existing layout or take screenshots before switching so you can return to it.
7. A settings sequence that minimizes backtracking
Apply changes in this order so later choices reflect the space you have actually created:
- Remove unused shortcuts: use Remove, not Uninstall, unless you intend to delete the app.
- Clear obsolete pages: move their contents, then remove the empty pages.
- Create only useful folders: group apps that you can name and recognize quickly.
- Choose the grid: test one denser and one more open arrangement, then keep the one that makes targets easiest for you to identify and tap.
- Set suggestions: select fixed favorites or dynamic suggestions according to whether consistency or prediction saves you more time.
- Resize widgets: keep the smallest form that provides the information or action you need.
- Test normal tasks: open your five most-used apps, check your calendar, and perform any gesture you rely on. Undo a change that adds searching or mis-taps.
8. Troubleshooting common problems
An app disappeared
Check the app drawer or list first. If it is there, only the home-screen shortcut was removed; press and hold the app in the drawer and drag it back to a home page if needed. If it is absent, check Android’s installed-app list before assuming the launcher caused the issue.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The page will not disappear
Look for a remaining widget, shortcut, folder, or group. Android removes a page only after its contents have been moved away. Some launchers keep a special feed or fixed page that cannot be deleted; treat that as a launcher limitation.
Best Value
The layout option is missing
Your launcher may not expose grid or icon-size controls, or the option may be under a different name. Confirm the selected default launcher, update it through the normal system channel if an update is offered, and search its settings for terms such as Grid, Layout, or Home screen.
Suggestions keep replacing favorites
Open Home settings and disable home-screen suggestions, not merely app-list suggestions, if your launcher separates the two. On Pixel, manually adding favorite apps requires suggestions to be turned off according to Google’s documented behavior.
A widget will not resize
Resize handles appear only for widgets that support resizing in the current launcher. Try the widget’s alternate size from the widget picker; otherwise choose a smaller widget or remove it.

New apps often add shortcuts or prompts, and habits change. Once a month, remove shortcuts you have not used, review every widget, and check whether a second page still has a clear purpose. When installing an app for a temporary task, avoid placing it on page one unless you expect to use it repeatedly. This maintenance preserves the predictable layout that makes access feel fast.
Use the comparison below when deciding what to change next:
| Goal | Setting to adjust | Best signal that it worked |
|---|---|---|
| Less visual clutter | Remove shortcuts, pages, and unused widgets. | You can identify the important apps without scanning multiple pages. |
| Fewer swipes | Use a suitable grid and purposeful folders. | Daily apps fit on the first page without tiny, confusing icons. |
| More predictable access | Turn off home-screen suggestions and maintain fixed favorites. | Frequently used apps remain in known positions. |
| Better at-a-glance information | Keep and resize only high-value widgets. | You get the needed answer or action without opening another app. |
| Compatibility with your phone | Use the controls exposed by the selected launcher. | Gestures, widgets, and default-home behavior remain reliable after changes. |
