Start with Settings > Battery > Battery usage to find what is actually consuming charge, then change only the settings that match the cause. Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled, reduce screen brightness and timeout, restrict unusually active background apps, and use Battery Saver when you need to stretch a low charge. Android menus differ by phone maker and version, so the Pixel paths below are Pixel-specific examples rather than universal instructions.
1. Find the real source of the drain first
Battery-saving changes work best when they target a measured cause. A phone that loses charge because the display is on for hours needs a different adjustment from one whose apps keep running in the background. Android’s Battery usage page shows how recently used power was divided among apps and system functions.

Pixel: review battery use by app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Review the apps and system entries with the largest shares of use. The period shown can vary with your Android version.
- Tap an app to inspect its battery details and the Allow background usage control.
Look for a pattern rather than reacting to one unfamiliar entry. A navigation app can legitimately use power during a long trip, for example, while a rarely used app with substantial background activity deserves closer attention. System entries may account for a large share after intensive display, cellular, camera, or location use, and some system controls cannot be changed from this screen.
Android’s labels and controls differ across manufacturers, regional editions, and software versions. If your phone does not use the Pixel wording, open its Battery section and look for an equivalent Battery usage, App battery usage, or per-app battery page in the manufacturer’s current support instructions.

2. Leave Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled
On supported Pixel phones, Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization turned on. Adaptive Battery uses your recent behavior to decide which apps should receive more or fewer background resources. App optimization applies Android’s power-management rules to individual apps instead of allowing every app to run freely at all times.
Why the phone may need time to learn
After setting up a new Pixel or completing a factory reset, Adaptive Battery may take a few weeks to learn your routine and fully optimize behavior. A short period of changing battery percentages immediately after setup does not prove that the feature is failing. Let the phone settle before making broad manual restrictions.
The trade-off of adaptive management
Power management can reduce an app’s performance or delay some notifications and background work. That is an intentional trade-off: less activity when you are not using the app can mean fewer timely updates. Keep optimization on unless a particular app’s behavior gives you a specific reason to adjust it, and then change that app rather than disabling the system-wide approach.

3. Restrict only apps with excessive background use
When Battery usage identifies an app that consumes substantial power while you are not actively using it, inspect that app’s background setting. On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, select the app, and review Allow background usage. Google generally recommends the Optimized setting for ordinary use.
Choosing between optimized and restricted behavior
| Setting approach | Use it when | Possible cost |
|---|---|---|
| Optimized | The app is used normally and does not show unusual background drain | Android decides when to limit background activity |
| Restricted | An app shows unusually high background use and does not need to work continuously | Notifications, syncing, location updates, or other background work may be delayed; the app may not work as usual |
Restriction is not a universal “better” setting. Messaging, email, calendar, security, wearable, transport, and smart-home apps may need background access to deliver alerts or maintain a connection. If you restrict one, test the functions you depend on for a day or two. If alerts arrive late or synchronization stops, return the app to Optimized.

Some apps expose fewer controls than others, and certain system components cannot be modified. Do not force a setting that Android does not offer; use the usage data to identify another controllable cause instead.
4. Reduce the display’s demand
The screen is often a major consumer when the phone is awake for long periods. Android’s general battery guidance is to lower brightness and make the screen turn off sooner. These changes do not have a guaranteed percentage saving: the result depends on display technology, brightness level, refresh behavior, ambient light, and how you use the phone.
Lower brightness
Open quick settings and move the brightness slider down to the lowest level that remains comfortable, or use the display controls in Settings. Automatic brightness can be useful when lighting changes, but manually reducing a consistently high level avoids spending power on a brighter screen than you need.
Shorten screen timeout
Set a shorter screen timeout in your phone’s Display settings. A shorter timeout prevents the display from remaining lit after you put the phone down. Choose a duration that does not interrupt reading or other tasks; an excessively short value can make normal use frustrating and lead you to keep the screen awake manually.
Consider Dark theme
Google lists Dark theme as another display-related option. Its effect depends on the panel and the colors an app uses, so treat it as a preference that may also reduce demand rather than as a fixed battery guarantee. It can be especially practical at night because it reduces glare.

5. Use Battery Saver when you need a temporary extension
Battery Saver is a situational mode for a low charge or a long period away from a charger. On standard Android, the general path is Settings > Battery > Battery Saver, although the name, location, and available controls vary by phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBattery Saver can limit or turn off background activity. Depending on the device, this may delay network connections, notifications, app updates, or other features. A navigation session, real-time chat, file upload, or wearable connection may behave differently while the mode is active.
How to use it without surprises
- Turn it on before the battery reaches a critically low level if you know you will be away from power.
- Check which features your phone says it will limit before relying on the device for time-sensitive work.
- Turn it off when you need normal synchronization, immediate notifications, or unrestricted performance.
- If your phone offers an automatic trigger, choose a level that matches your routine rather than enabling it so early that ordinary use is constantly constrained.
Battery Saver is not a substitute for finding a misbehaving app. If one app is responsible for persistent drain, diagnose that app through Battery usage instead of leaving the whole phone in a restricted mode.
6. Reduce high-power connectivity and location use
Google identifies hotspot and tethering, prolonged GPS use, streaming, and calls while moving as activities that can increase consumption. Mobile data may require more power than Wi-Fi in some situations, so use a reliable Wi-Fi connection when practical. The relevant action is to stop a connection only when you no longer need it.
Hotspot and tethering
Turn off your hotspot when other devices are finished using it. A hotspot keeps the phone’s radio active and may also cause extra traffic and heat. If another device still depends on the connection, stopping it will interrupt that device’s internet access.

Location and GPS
End navigation or other continuous location sessions when you arrive. Turning off Location globally can save power in some circumstances, but it also prevents apps and features that depend on location from working correctly. Prefer per-app permissions or closing an active session when that is sufficient.
Streaming and moving calls
Long video streams, voice or video calls while travelling between cell sites, and weak-signal conditions can all increase radio activity. Downloading content over Wi-Fi before a trip, when the service supports it, avoids keeping a mobile connection busy for the entire journey.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Treat heat as a battery warning
Google’s Android guidance states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Heat can come from direct sunlight, a hot car, intensive gaming, charging while working hard, navigation, streaming, or a struggling cellular connection.
Move the phone to a cooler place, remove an insulating case temporarily if safe to do so, and stop demanding tasks until its temperature falls. Do not put the phone in a freezer or use another extreme cooling method; condensation and thermal shock can cause damage. Repeated heat-related drain can also damage the battery itself, so treat unusual warmth as a reason to reduce load rather than merely accepting faster percentage loss.

Pixel phones can use more power for a short time after a software update while the new software is downloaded, installed, and optimized. A temporary increase in drain during that process can be normal. If unusual drain continues for more than a few days, follow the support guidance for your exact device and Android version rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Best Value
Record which app or system entry is high in Battery usage before contacting support. That information gives the manufacturer a useful starting point and helps distinguish update activity from an app that has become stuck in the background.
9. A practical order for changing settings
Use this sequence to avoid creating new problems while chasing a vague battery complaint:
- Measure: open Battery usage and note the largest app and system consumers.
- Preserve adaptive controls: confirm Adaptive Battery and app optimization remain enabled where your phone supports them.
- Address the obvious load: lower brightness, shorten timeout, end navigation, stop a hotspot, or close a long stream when those activities match the usage pattern.
- Target one app: change an unusually active app from unrestricted behavior to Optimized or Restricted, then test notifications and synchronization.
- Use Battery Saver selectively: enable it for a low-charge situation, and review its limitations before relying on time-sensitive features.
- Check temperature and timing: determine whether heat or a recent update explains the change.
- Recheck: return to Battery usage after normal use so you can see whether the targeted source declined or another activity is now dominant.
Changing one category at a time makes the result understandable. If you disable location, restrict several apps, and enable Battery Saver simultaneously, you may extend runtime but lose notifications or features without knowing which change caused the side effect.

There is no single Android menu layout. Pixel documentation provides the most detailed paths for Battery usage and Adaptive Battery, while other manufacturers may rename the same controls, place them under Device care or Power management, or add their own battery modes. Android version, phone model, and carrier software can also affect which options appear.
- If you cannot find Battery usage, search Settings for “battery usage” or open the phone maker’s Battery or Device care section.
- If an app has no background toggle, use its in-app sync controls, notification settings, or the broader battery page supplied by the manufacturer.
- If a restriction breaks alerts, restore the previous setting before troubleshooting the app itself.
- If drain is severe despite normal temperatures and no high-usage app, use the manufacturer’s device-specific support process; a generic Android path may not expose the cause.
The most reliable approach is selective: diagnose first, keep Android’s adaptive controls on, reduce display and connectivity demand that you can identify, and reserve broad restrictions for situations where their usability cost is acceptable.
